Alphaman

edit

I noticed that you deleted the Alphaman article on July 12, 2007. I looked up what "prod" meant in this context. Am I correct in assuming that you proposed deletion of the article, then no one responded within 5 days, so you went ahead and deleted it?

The fact that it wasn't a long article, that if I'm correct in assuming that no one objected within 5 days, and the fact that it took me 8 months to realize it was deleted seems to confirm that it wasn't notable.

Still, I think it's notable in relation to the rouge-like games. And I'm asking now because today there was some information I remember was on the Wikipedia page and no where else.

I was going to ask if the page was truely deleted everywhere, but while I was looking I found the page archive on the Internet Archive http://web.archive.org (and found the information I was looking for). So now I'm more just asking if it was deleted simply because it was short and no one objected to its deletion.

Featured Article queue

edit

I'm not sure exactly what the issue is you're tackling at the TFA requests talk page, but if you can't watch the page constantly (to do . . . whatever it is you need to do), I can handle that for you. It'd be nice to have Surfer Rosa appear on the Main Page for its 20th anniversary, and you've been long overdue an appearance there (For comparison's sake, I've had two articles appear on the Main Page already. This was back when we could nominate any article, and I personally nominated neither. Odd that.). WesleyDodds (talk) 06:57, 4 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

There's my three official current projects (In Utero, Definitely Maybe, and Britpop), but I get distracted easily. As a result I've done a lot of work on Bauhaus (band). There's a few more Replacements articles I should send you. Remind me to if I don't e-mail them to you over the weekend. WesleyDodds (talk) 22:05, 7 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
I just listed my support for Surfer Rosa, by the way. If you have time, could you take a look at Vitalogy? I think we can list it for a Good Article nomination soon; it just needs some tweaking. WesleyDodds (talk) 11:12, 12 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Persian Gulf mediation

edit

For the third time, I would like to know if you are abandoning the Persian Gulf mediation. It seems to have foundered with the dispute unresolved, and at least two other editors are misconstruing the notes from the mediation. If you are unable or disinterested in remaining involved, please let me know, so we can resubmit to mediation. - Arcayne (cast a spell) 22:40, 9 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

I disagree, the current mediation shouldn't be abandoned. We were closer to a resolution than ever, before Arcayne all of sudden abandoned the discussions. However, a solution is still not out of reach. --Sia34 (talk) 22:49, 9 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Then you are far ore optimistic than I, as I haven't really seen any compromise from any of your edits in the article, discussion or mediation, as that is somewhat the intention of mediation. Also, might I trouble you to avoid stalking my edits? It's kinda creepy. - Arcayne (cast a spell) 22:58, 9 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
You haven't seen any compromise from me? I am the one who introduced a compromise version, which everyone was OK with BUT you. If you were willing to compromise and hadn't abandoned the discussions, there would be a solution by now, and I am not the only one who is saying that. It's still not too late, you can still show that you're willing to compromise by resuming the discussions on the mediation, rationalizing your objections and bringing counter-proposal until there is an agreement. And how am I "stalking your edits" exactly? I am simply leaving a message for the mediator. --Sia34 (talk) 23:27, 9 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
I'm happy to resume mediating the dispute. (Arcayne, I may have missed your messages on the mediation; if so, I'm sorry! I haven't been on here as much recently, but I should be back to normal editing levels now.) Do you we all agree to resume on the current mediation page? CloudNine (talk) 23:30, 9 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Accelerate

edit

I've only heard the singles, although I might get a cheap copy soon. "Supernatural Superserious" sounds better if it's on the radio surrounded by lesser tunes. "Hollow Man" sounds good when you get to the chorus, though (at least judging from the live performances on YouTube). WesleyDodds (talk) 23:14, 11 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

By the way, editing Accelerate (R.E.M. album)‎ has been consistently frustrating. You really have to go through pages of history and the archived talk page to get the full story, but suffice it to say it's taken a lot of work to try to shape the article into something decent while constantly running into problems. Funny thing is, I haven't even heard the album yet. WesleyDodds (talk) 06:02, 14 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

A recent post seems to pretty much seal the deal on adding the term. What do you think of The controversy over the name of the Arabian Gulf / Persian Gulf? - Arcayne (cast a spell) 04:31, 25 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

How does that post "seal the deal" about anything? I think you should re-examine it more closely, it's just a bunch of rants and original research added by a Pan-Arabist who needs to be reminded that Wikipedia is not a soapbox.--Sia34 (talk) 04:58, 25 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Sigh. Then Sia, I urge you to go to the page an discuss the matter there. Had you actually read all of my post, you would have seen that the point of the post was to have Cloudnine check it out for themself. And please, stop tossing around labels, Someone could easily salp you with the label, Pan-Iranist. He isn't soapboxing; he is presenting info. Maybe you could actually read it before dismissing it? - Arcayne (cast a spell) 05:04, 25 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
I did read it, it's propaganda, soap-boxing, and nothing more. "He is presenting info"? Whose info? His own original research? I don't see a single verfible source in that post. --Sia34 (talk) 05:10, 25 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

edit

A lot of other users have been less active (NSR77) or disappeared (Brandt Luke Zorn). I was pretty busy in April so my editing dropped off drastically as well. April was the first month in over a year with no alt-rock articles promoted to FA staus. However, we're trying to turn that around this month, and there's already some FAs and FLs for May (in particular, check out "Touch Me I'm Sick"). If you're interested in cleaning up some Pearl Jam articles and getting them to GA status, that would be great; User:-5- has done a lot of work on them, and we've already pushed Ten and Vitalogy to GA status. By the way, the last issue of Spin I bought (R.E.M. on the cover) has a Kim Deal interview, so let me know when you get the urge to work on that article again, and I'll help you out. Pixies songs

edit

Please explain why you reverted the redirects that I put in place for the following songs

As I explained in the edit summary, they all fail Wikipedia:Notability_(music)#Songs, and thus do not require articles. Regards Nouse4aname (talk) 15:03, 28 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

From the link above... "Most songs do not merit an article and should redirect to another relevant article" and "Songs that have been ranked on national or significant music charts, that have won significant awards or honors or that have been performed independently by several notable artists, bands or groups are probably notable". None of these songs charted, and there is no assertion of significance for any of them. Generally album-tracks are not notable enough to require a separate article, regardless of what information you can find. Such information should be incorporated into the album article, if anything. Nouse4aname (talk) 15:30, 28 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
But you have failed to assert any significance or notability for any of the songs. Nouse4aname (talk) 15:35, 28 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
OK, fair enough if you are confident of that, but I want to see three featured articles by Friday! Happy editing... Nouse4aname (talk) 15:39, 28 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Some Pixies discussion

edit

Hi,

I tried to make some corrections on the Pixies article that were overturned by you and I just wanted to go into some details to maybe hammer this out.

Kim Deal stated in numerous interviews that she was not responsible for the content/lyrics/any songwriting of any of the songs other than the two (unless you count Levitate Me, a multi-credit one that shifted later, three) songs in which she was credited for songwriting. In fact, she said they never talk/talked about the lyrics at all, and she had to learn them by listening to him (radio interview on TLM tour??) It therefore seems unlikely to me to think that a change in the songwriting and subject matter had anything to do with her. On the contrary, Charles (Black Francis) talked about in his Melody Maker tour diary about writing the new songs on tour and wondering what type of response they might get from their other fans. It's also worth noting that several other songs regarding aliens etcetera had been recorded before Bossanova (Manta Ray, Into the White etcetera).

That being said, Kim did express in interviews a frustration at being marginalized in other ways, like not having as many backup vocals to sing (most of the songs w/prominent vocals on BN and TLM were ones that were written/arranged before the recording of the album, i.e. Dig For Fire, Subbaculta)

I think that is a much clearer way of presenting the information.

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:PixiesVelouriaVideo.png

edit

Thank you for uploading File:PixiesVelouriaVideo.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. GA Sweeps invitation

edit

Hello, I hope you are doing well. I am sending you this message since you are listed as a GA reviewer. I would like to invite you to consider helping with the GA sweeps process. Sweeps helps to ensure that the oldest GAs still meet the criteria, and improve the quality of GAs overall. Unfortunately, last month only two articles were reviewed. This is definitely a low point after our peak at the beginning of the process when 163 articles were reviewed in September 2007. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. All exempt and previously reviewed articles have already been removed from the list. Instead of reviewing by topic, you can consider picking and choosing whichever articles interest you.

We are always looking for new members to assist with the remaining articles, so if you are interested or know of anybody that can assist, please visit the GA sweeps page. In addition, for every member that reviews 100 articles or has a significant impact on the process, s/he will get an award when they reach that threshold. If only 14 editors achieve this feat starting now, we would be done with Sweeps! Of course, having more people reviewing less articles would be better for all involved, so please consider asking others to help out. Feel free to stop by and only review a few articles, something's better than nothing! Take a look at the list, and see what articles interest you. Let's work to complete Sweeps so that efforts can be fully focused on the backlog at GAN. If you have any questions about the process, reviewing, or need help with a particular article, please contact me or OhanaUnited and we'll be happy to help. --Happy editing! WP:Hornbook -- a new WP:Law task force for the J.D. curriculum

edit

Hi CloudNine,

I'm asking Wikipedians who are interested in United States legal articles to take a look at WP:Hornbook, the new "JD curriculum task force".

Our mission is to assimilate into Wikipedia all the insights of an American law school education, by reducing hornbooks to footnotes.

  • Over the course of a semester, each subpage will shift its focus to track the unfolding curriculum(s) for classes using that casebook around the country.
  • It will also feature an extensive, hyperlinked "index" or "outline" to that casebook, pointing to pages, headers, or {{anchors}} in Wikipedia (example).
  • Individual law schools can freely adapt our casebook outlines to the idiosyncratic curriculum devised by each individual professor.
  • I'm encouraging law students around the country to create local chapters of the club I'm starting at my own law school, "Student WP:Hornbook Editors". Using WP:Hornbook as our headquarters, we're hoping to create a study group so inclusive that nobody will dare not join.

What you can do now:

1. Add WP:Hornbook to your watchlist, {{User Hornbook}} to your userpage, and ~~~~ to Wikipedia:Hornbook/participants.
2. If you're a law student,
(You don't have to start the club, or even be involved in it; just help direct me to someone who might.)
3. Introduce yourself to me. Law editors on Wikipedia are a scarce commodity. Do knock on my talk page if there's an article you'd like help on.

WikiProject Economics census

Hello there. Sorry to bother you, but you are (titularly at least) a member of WP:WikiProject Economics, as defined by this category. If you don't know me, I'm a Wikipedia administrator, but an unqualified economist. I enjoy writing about economics, but I'm not very good at it, which is why I would like to support in any way I can the strong body of economists here on Wikipedia. I'm only bothering you because you are probably one of them. Together, I'd like us to establish the future direction of WikiProject Economics, but first, we need to know who we've got to help.

Whatever your area of expertise or level of qualification, if you're interested in helping with the WikiProject (even if only as part of a larger commitment to this wonderful online encyclopedia of ours), would you mind adding your signature to this page? It only takes a second. Thank you.

Doolittle is the second studio album from the American alternative rock band Pixies, released on 18 April 1989 on 4AD. The album's offbeat and dark subject material, featuring references to surrealism, Biblical violence, torture and death, contrasts with the clean production sound achieved by the then-newly-hired producer Gil Norton. Doolittle was the Pixies' first international release, with Elektra Records acting as the album's distributor in the United States and PolyGram in Canada. Two tracks were released as singles: "Here Comes Your Man" and "Monkey Gone to Heaven". Doolittle has continued to sell consistently well in the years since its release, and in 1995 was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. The album has been cited as inspirational by many alternative artists, while numerous music publications have ranked it as one of the most influential albums ever. (more...)

MSU Interview

edit

Dear CloudNine,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chlopeck (talkcontribs) 14:03, 14 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

If the previous blurb needs tweaking, you might change it—following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. The blurb as it stands now is below:

Black Francis (born 1965) is an American singer, songwriter and guitarist. He is best known as the frontman of the influential alternative rock band Pixies. Following the band's breakup in 1993, he embarked on a solo career. After releasing two albums with 4AD, he left the label and formed a backing band, Frank Black and the Catholics. He reformed the Pixies in 2004 and continues to release solo records and tour as a solo artist. His vocal style has varied from a screaming, yowling delivery as lead vocalist of the Pixies to a more measured and melodical style in his solo career. His cryptic lyrics mostly explore unconventional subjects, such as surrealism, incest and biblical violence, along with science fiction and surf culture. His use of atypical meter signatures, loud–quiet dynamics and distinct preference for live-to-two-track recording in his career as a solo artist give him a distinct style within alternative rock. As frontman of the Pixies, his songs (such as "Where Is My Mind?" and "Debaser") received praise and citations from contemporaries, including Radiohead's Thom Yorke and Nirvana's Kurt Cobain. Cobain once said that "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was his attempt at trying to "rip off the Pixies". However, in his solo work and records with the Catholics, he received fewer popular and critical accolades. (more...)

Joey Santiago (born 1965) is a Filipino-American guitarist and composer. Active since 1986, Santiago is best known as the lead guitarist for the American alternative rock band Pixies. After the band's breakup in 1993, Santiago produced musical scores for film and television documentaries, and he formed The Martinis with his wife, Linda Mallari. He also contributed to albums by Charles Douglas and former Pixies fellow bandsman Frank Black. Santiago resumed his role as the Pixies' lead guitarist when they reunited in 2004. Santiago has described his guitar technique as "angular and bent," and he cites Les Paul, Chet Atkins, Joe Pass and Jimi Hendrix as major influences on his style. His guitar playing, as part of the Pixies' sound, was held in high regard by critics: MTV's Laurel Bowman commented that Santiago's "sonic plow was the key element in the Pixies' monstrous presence." You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/June 15, 2014. If it needs tweaking, or if it needs rewording to match improvements to the article between now and its main page appearance, please edit it, following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. The blurb as it stands now is below:

"Bam Thwok" is a download-only single by the American alternative rock band Pixies. The song was written and sung by bassist Kim Deal (pictured), and released exclusively through the iTunes Store on June 15, 2004. It was the band's first recording since the 1991 studio album Trompe le Monde; the Pixies broke up acromoniously in 1993 and reformed in 2004. Frontman Black Francis, the band's principal songwriter, said the recording session "was very relaxed, a nice way to break the ice". Originally composed for the movie Shrek 2, the song was not selected for the final soundtrack. The lyrics display a surrealistic and nonsensical nature typical of the band; Deal's inspiration was a discarded child's art book she found on a New York City street. She commented "This kid had written ... about a party that took place in another universe, about people and monsters that were partying together." The song is structured around a four-beat guitar melody which incorporates major chords throughout. It begins with full instrumentation, over which Santiago layers a short guitar solo. "Bam Thwok" debuted at number one on the first release of the UK Download Chart. (Full article...)

You (and your talk-page stalkers) may also be interested to hear that there have been some changes at the TFA requests page recently. Nominators no longer need to calculate how many "points" an article has, the instructions have been simplified, and there's a new nomination system using templates based on those used for DYK suggestions. Please consider nominating another article, or commenting on an existing nomination, and leaving some feedback on your experience. Thank you. UcuchaBot (talk) 23:01, 27 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Public Disturbance (U.S. band)

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Public Disturbance (U.S. band) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a band or musician, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Proposed deletion of Stagg Street Studios

edit

The article Stagg Street Studios has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non notable company. WP:BEFORE shows no reliable, substantial, secondary sources

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
