IABot blocked on JAWiki

Hi there, this is a notification that I have blocked User:InternetArchiveBot on Japanese Wikipedia because Job ID 5930 was run with fewer than 10 seconds per one edit (e.g. 8 edits in 02:53, 29 May 2020 (UTC)). The job also had much more edits than what was agreed in the bot flag request. I can unblock it once the issues are resolved. ネイ (talk) 05:37, 29 May 2020 (UTC)

I was not editing jawiki specifically, but every wiki language that contains a set of Olympics related URLs and jawiki was on the list. I didn't expect the bot to run on a site that was disabled, it probably happened because of my admin bits, I was not aware the bot could do this. GreenC and ネイ, actually it's open to anyone to run. Job runs are generally not affected by the run pages because the job is invoked by the user and is usually believed that the user would have good reason to do so and is following local policy. Is it possible to remove the ability to run manual jobs in jawiki? Allowing these jobs basically means everyone has access to run the bot, instead of only cyberpower678 (and WMF). ネイ, I believe that to be an unnecessary escalation for something that appears to be one off. While I said there isn’t any solution at the moment, I never said I was unwilling to implement one. But I just get some inspiration last night, that might work, regarding the rate limits. It’s not an ideal solution, but the user submitted bot jobs queue would be disabled for any wiki requiring a rate limit. With no preventive (not a mere warning message) measures in place, I cannot come to the conclusion that it is one off (this time it is GreenC, next time it could be another user, or an LTA with an account in basicuser group). Also, you never said you are unwilling to implement one, but you also never said you will implement one until after the RFB is raised (when I asked whether manual jobs can be disabled in jawiki at 14:58, 29 May 2020 (UTC), you did not respond to that ask but mentioned something else). This aside, before I report back to the RFB, it would be great if you could confirm on the following.

1. Does IABot's main process (the automated process) have rate limits in place? If yes, then I can consider the rate limit issue resolved once the user submitted bot jobs queue is disabled for jawiki.
2. The operator names in ja:User:InternetArchiveBot and en:User:InternetArchiveBot are different (the former mentions cyberpower678, while the latter mentions cyberpower678 and kaldari). Which one is the accurate one? This question arises from a concern raised on the RFB, namely that ja:WP:ROLE currently does not allow any exceptions, including bot accounts. I have raised an RFC to allow approved bots with multiple managers as an exception, but would like to confirm whether this affects InternetArchiveBot.

ネイ, IABot does not have any rate limits. With that being said the main process is disabled on jawiki and I’m the only one that can enable it. Disabling the queue, would keep the bot from running entirely on jawiki. I’m not trying to avoid answering your questions. I’m perfectly willing to implement a solution, but it needs to work. The reason why I haven’t worked on rate limits though is jawiki is literally the only wiki that rate limits approved bots, and I’ve had to deal with more important issues spanning across multiple wikis. My logic was that as long as the bot is off, no problems will arise in jawiki. Admittedly, I neglected to consider that someone could fire off a job. I can go ahead and disable the queue to prevent further runs going forward. As for the maintainers. It used to be the case that Kaldari had the keys to the bot, but now I’m the only one with access.—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 13:23, 30 May 2020 (UTC)

Michael Romanov, this is not a bug. This is intentional behavior. Webarchive is not meant to be a standalone template. It should be appended to bare URL references. So IABot converts them to full citations. —CYBERPOWER (Chat) 18:13, 15 June 2020 (UTC)

The problem is that Template:Webarchive is not standing alone, it immediately follows the link embedded in another template, e.g.: [2]. I would suggest to change the behaviour of InternetArchiveBot in cases when a reference link is embedded in one template, while Template:Webarchive stands next to that template. With that being said, it might be worthwhile to maybe try to reduce the amount of content between the link and the template. If we look at citation templates, most of them require a detailed description through entering proper info in multiple fields of each template. I think InternetArchiveBot creates this problem every time it finds a citation template with embedded link, undermining the whole concept of using these templates in Wikipedia. Michael Romanov, I'm not sure I follow what you're saying. The example you provided has no citation template in it. IABot converted what it thought was a standalone Webarchive template into a full citation template. Should it have done that? No, but there is no cite template. Michael Romanov, I just noticed that you linked to me a second example. My bad again. I have looked at the second example, and as I can tell, this is not a bug. It doesn't look like that template supports any archive URL parameters, and so IABot cannot simply add them. Therefore, it, instead, attaches a webarchive template to the книга template. I would say that this happens every day. This is what I discovered this morning: [3], [4], [5], [6], [7]. In other words, every time the bot faces an article with template {{Книга}}, it deletes the adjacent Template:Webarchive and adds Template:Cite web, although this is obviously not necessary to do. IABot deactivated on nlwiki

Hello, the nlwiki community reported that IABot was malfunctioning. Way too many live links were marked as dead; the decision was taken to deactivate the bot on nlwiki. I did some investigating and discovered a possible cause: Spamhaus' CBL has blacklisted (what I presume to be) the IP address used by the bot, see here. Bdijkstra, I am however exploring methods of setting certain IABot jobs to appear as different IPs based on whatever region Wikipedia it's working on. This is in hopes of getting around some geo-restrictions. So on nlwiki, IABot will appear to third party sites as making requests from the Netherlands. Hello, InternetArchiveBot seems to have a lot of problems with this domain, which is used to cite post office information in articles. It thinks this is a dead link and provides a useless archive link, despite me telling the bot both that the link is live and the archive URL is not useful. I've just removed over 150 links for the Australian state of Victoria alone; Fleet Lists pointed out on my talk page that there are plenty more for New South Wales, let alone any other places. Can you stop the bot from adding these invalid links, and is my suggestion of Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Tasks the right one for removing them? Graham87 08:08, 26 June 2020 (UTC)

@Graham87:, do not suggest AWB for URL work. Suggest WP:URLREQ as URLs are deceptively easy to mess up with search/replace tools. BTW since I am here, I set the domain to "Whitelist" which should stop the bot from adding archives. If that is incorrect please undo. -- GreenC 12:15, 26 June 2020 (UTC)

Archiving_by_bot_InternetArchiveBot

Please see User_talk:Graham87#Archiving_by_bot_InternetArchiveBot This is causing quite a bit of trouble. I did not mention in there that there is a further problem. A couple of weeks ago I changed the link in Jerilderie so that the link there to [8] which goes direct so that the search is no longer required. I was planning to do that to all locations. But it was then pointed out to me that for some reason such links can not be archived and I should not use such links. There are many locations which already use that format - see [9] So I am not sure at the moment which way we should go to sort all this out. Fleet Lists (talk) 09:05, 26 June 2020 (UTC)

Please explain this edit. I have two issues with the edit.

1. The page in question, https://hpiers.obspm.fr/ is working.
2. In "External links" sections, we are generally interested in the latest version of a page, not an archived version. Bad replacement; cannot be reported

This URL is not dead, but was replaced on Wikispecies in this edit (which I have reverted). I attempted to use the tool for reporting such cases, but its response was "These URLs were not found in the DB and will be ignored". IAB on dewiki

Hi Cyber,
I haven't seen the IAB on my watchlist for quite a while, and my maintenance lists are getting shorter and shorter. Which is a good thing basically, but I see only one IAB edit since June 26 - is the bot not running continuously? I miss him, sort of! ;-)

Some issues caused by an InternetArchiveBot edit

Hi Cyberpower, in this InternetArchiveBot edit [12] your bot conducted a number of strange actions I would like to report. When you find the time, can you please investigate and fix the bot accordingly?

• At the bottom of the page under "External links" there is a text structure with embedded links which allows to browse a former website for historical & research purposes. The structure lists a number of websites combined with specific start and end dates for each of them, as these websites were either non-existant before or after the date or were usurped for something else. The bot not only removed some of the links so that only a rather non-sensical text fragment remained, but it also changed the dates of the archived snapshots to different dates. Such structures are used in various articles, and I have seen them being messed up by the bot for some while. I don't know what triggers the bot to touch these structures at all, given that they contain only archived links. Ideally it should just leave them alone.
• In two cases, the bot replaced a functioning archive-url link pointing to archive.org by links from archive.today. While it is nice that it expanded the archive.today links, I think it shouldn't have replaced the archive.org link in the first place.
• When the bot changes links it apparently also edits dates, even if they do not change. There's no need to do that if the date doesn't change, but if it does, the format used should be in compliance with the cs1-dates parameter of a "Use xxx dates" template, if given. In particular, the bot should adhere to the cs1-dates=y value. It is somewhat annoying (and against our editing guidelines) that the bot inserts long date formats, when all references consistently use the ymd format, and this is even indicated by cs1-dates=y.

I'm not sure. Maybe it was me when doing general changes with its messages and options. Even though I don't remember exactly when has been the last time I've dealt with it. (I'm saying that only because I know no one else from SqWiki would bother to deal with it and since I believe it wasn't you...) But you're sort of missing the point there. The messages in themselves are not the problem. They only serve as a representation of the bot's activity. The problem is the bot's activity which is stuck in a loop on pages like those mentioned above and keeps doing the same changes over and over again. Their article history is the same as looking at the messages on their talk pages because of the bot's activity. In some of the pages the bot has even been adding links forever in a loop like behavior trying to fix them.

And it must be said that besides all that, we sort of want the bot messages to raise awareness of its work in the background and consequently of the importance of good reference links. That's why we've given extra importance to the translation's accuracy of its messages, one of the other problems I've tried discussing with you in the past. (Maybe we could try to stop them in the future if they did become too much for us.) So having that in mind, turning off bot messages isn't really a desirable solution. Turning them of temporarily is totally normal though but as I said, the main problem is the bot's activity that keeps messing with certain articles, not its messages. - Klein Muçi (talk) 17:58, 24 July 2020 (UTC)
