that vandal from Louisville

DannyS712, I appreciate your zeal, but reverting that editor a dozen times is not helpful at all--it just means that admins have to revdelete more content, and the edit history gets more clogged up with those edits, and they get what they want. Just warn and report, please. Thank you. Drmies (talk) 22:25, 18 November 2020 (UTC)

@Drmies: Sorry, I thought that it warranted reverting given how inappropriate the content was, and they were already reported to AIV - I'll refrain, but I'm sure other editors will revert instead (also for history getting clogged up, deletion and selective undeletion can hide that) DannyS712 (talk) 22:27, 18 November 2020 (UTC)
I have already revdeleted the content, but the entries, with the crossed out bit, are still there. I've been revdeleting this a-hole's vandalism for years now; the less we have to scrub the better. If AIV isn't responding, you can go through Recent changes to see if any admins are at work--that's what I usually do when I'm IP-slumming. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 22:30, 18 November 2020 (UTC)
@Drmies okay, now at Special:Contributions/71.66.32.150 DannyS712 (talk) 22:32, 18 November 2020 (UTC)
Thanks, and thank you L235. Kevin, they sort of alternate in that border area. Can you maybe place a note on the CU list to see if anyone has any ideas? Thanks, Drmies (talk) 22:40, 18 November 2020 (UTC)
@Drmies: Hey I just emailed you directly re CU action here. Best, KevinL (aka L235 · t · c) 22:50, 18 November 2020 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) See my test filter (1013 (hist · log)) for something I came up with to try and prevent this kind of situation. Throttle params will require lots of adjustment, but it might work. I'll agree with Danny also; if it's serious vandalism to a BLP (and not an obscure species of beetle, or a thick-skinned admin's talk page), the WP:READER comes first, and if the history gets clogged, it gets clogged. Account creator granted

After reviewing your request for the "accountcreator" permission, I have enabled the flag on your account. Keep in mind these things:

  • The account creator right removes the limit on the maximum number of new accounts that can be created in a 24-hour period.
  • The account creator right is not a status symbol. If it remains unused, it is likely to be removed. Abuse of the account creator right will result in its removal by an administrator.

If you no longer require the right, let me know, or ask any other administrator. Drop a note on my talk page if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of the account creator right. Happy editing! — JJMC89(T·C) 04:53, 20 November 2020 (UTC)

ArbCom 2020 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2020 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 7 December 2020. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2020 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 02:59, 24 November 2020 (UTC)

Selective undeletion script

Hi Danny – hope you're well. You wanted to me to poke you on-wiki about the possibility of a script for Wikipedia:Selective deletion. Best, KevinL (aka L235 · t · c) 23:07, 24 November 2020 (UTC)

Yes, thanks. Thinking about it more though, I'm not quite sure it'll work - I'll try to write something up when I get a chance DannyS712 (talk) 20:10, 29 November 2020 (UTC)
@L235 okay, not pretty, but m:User:DannyS712/SelectiveDeleter.js should do what you want - view the page history, select which revisions you want deleted, and click the button - no guarantees made though DannyS712 (talk) 05:45, 30 December 2020 (UTC)

Self-nominations are welcome. October Blitz: this ran from 18 to 24 October, and focused on articles tagged for copy-edit in July and August 2020, and all Requests. Of the 13 who signed up, 11 editors copy-edited at least one article. 21 articles were claimed for the blitz.

New Page Patrol December Newsletter

Hello DannyS712,

Year in review

It has been a productive year for New Page Patrol as we've roughly cut the size of the New Page Patrol queue in half this year. We have been fortunate to have a lot of great work done by Rosguill who was the reviewer of the most pages and redirects this past year. Thanks and credit go to JTtheOG and Onel5969 who join Rosguill in repeating in the top 10 from last year. Thanks to John B123, Hughesdarren, and Mccapra who all got the NPR permission this year and joined the top 10. Also new to the top ten is DannyS712 bot III, programmed by DannyS712 which has helped to dramatically reduce the number of redirects that have needed human patrolling by patrolling certain types of redirects (e.g. for differences in accents) and by also patrolling editors who are on on the redirect whitelist.

Reviewer of the Year

John B123 has been named reviewer of the year for 2020. John has held the permission for just over 6 months and in that time has helped cut into the queue by reviewing more than 18,000 articles. His talk page shows his efforts to communicate with users, upholding NPP's goal of nurturing new users and quality over quantity.

NPP Technical Achievement Award

As a special recognition and thank you DannyS712 has been awarded the first NPP Technical Achievement Award. His work programming the bot has helped us patrol redirects tremendously - more than 60,000 redirects this past year. This has been a large contribution to New Page Patrol and definitely is worthy of recognition.

DannyS712 bot doing something odd

Hi Danny the new list of orphans with incoming links (03:01, 13 December 2020) begins with Norway, with 73458 incoming links. I thought someone might have tagged it as an orphan by mistake, but if there’s an orphan tag on that page anywhere, I can’t find it. This is the first time the bot has produced a result that looks to me like a mistake. All the best Mccapra (talk) 05:31, 13 December 2020 (UTC)

@Mccapra one of my other scripts thought it was an orphan too, because there was an orphan tag transcluded on the page - fixed in Special:Diff/993925585 at Template:Largest cities of Norway DannyS712 (talk) 05:46, 13 December 2020 (UTC)
Ah ok many thanks. Mccapra (talk) 05:47, 13 December 2020 (UTC)

Message request.

Hi, I have a small list of userbox ideas that I was going to send out to people who make userboxes on request, and I saw your name on the list, but while I was checking you out, I noticed you also take requests to mass message people, so I was thinking maybe it would be easier if you could just send my small list to everyone who does userbox requests to see if anyone is interested in doing one of the boxes on my list? If someone would be interested in doing one of them all they have to do is contact me about what I would like it to say. Here is my list of ideas to choose from:

@Huggums537 sorry, I'm no longer working with userboxes and have removed myself from that list DannyS712 (talk) 16:29, 18 February 2021 (UTC)
Hi Danny, I was actually just asking if you would send the emails for me. Thanks. Huggums537 (talk) 17:50, 18 February 2021 (UTC)
@Huggums537 emails? If you mean a mass message, I suggest requesting it at Wikipedia talk:Mass message senders since it may be a bit before I can get to it. But, either way, I would need a mailing list to send it to, a subject line, and the content of the message to include DannyS712 (talk) 18:32, 18 February 2021 (UTC)
Ok, nevermind. I didn't realize it was emails. I got in trouble for that sort of thing before, so I'm really surprised to find out they are actually giving people the right to do it after they told me it was the wrong thing to do. I guess they have two sets of rules for people on Wikipedia: Rules for thee, and rules for me. Anyway, thanks for your help. Huggums537 (talk) 23:13, 18 February 2021 (UTC)
@Huggums537 its not emails - I brought up emails because I was confused by I was actually just asking if you would send the emails for me. It should probably be done onwiki - either posting on users talk pages, or using a mass message to do so if its warranted. DannyS712 (talk) 23:15, 18 February 2021 (UTC)
Ok, yeah I mis-spoke there. Pardon me for the confusion. What I meant to say is that I was actually just asking if you would send the talk messages for me. I have know idea why a slip of tongue/keyboard resulted in "email". Anyway, I was just looking at the mass messaging page, and it looks like it applies to talk pages as well as emails for things like newsletters and the like, or people "who are likely to want their attention drawn to the message" I think since the people have put themselves on a list to be contacted, this makes it so. Huggums537 (talk) 23:38, 18 February 2021 (UTC)
DannyS712, if you took your name off the list, you might also want to remove this userbox from your page. {Userbox creator} Huggums537 (talk) 16:02, 19 February 2021 (UTC)

Tagging pages for deletion

Hello, DannyS712,

You are such an experienced editor but I wanted to remind you that when you tag a page for deletion (CSD, PROD, AFD, etc.), could you please post a notice on the talk page of the page creator? I use Twinkle which does this automatically for me so I recommend it. If the page creator doesn't receive a notice, they don't know what happened to the pages they created since they have no access to their deleted contributions. Thank you so much for all of the work you do. Liz Read! Talk! 00:32, 19 February 2021 (UTC)

@Liz as I noted at User talk:DannyS712/Archive 8#Speedy deletions I have Twinkle set up to notify on deletion tags. I assume this is prompted by my G7 tags? I have notifications enabled for *all* CSD tags that Twinkle supports notifications for, which does not appear to include G7. If notifications should be sent for G7 tags too, this should be set up as an option in Twinkle first. DannyS712 (talk) 00:42, 19 February 2021 (UTC)

Script/bot request

Is it possible to develop a script/bot that replaces external diff links with internal ones? For example: replace [45]https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Steve_M&diff=next&oldid=1006941019&diffmode=source with Special:Diff/1006941019. @Smallbones my email doesn't currently work, so I can't see what you sent me. Is this urgent? DannyS712 (talk) 18:43, 25 February 2021 (UTC)
I found an email from you in my archives and tried sending it there - maybe it's a different address? There are several topics. The only "urgent" one is about publishing The Signpost Sunday (4pm eastern) but there are 2 other possibilities, so let's not say urgent. Smallbones(smalltalk) 19:44, 25 February 2021 (UTC)
@Smallbones the email I use(d) is dannys712.enwiki gmail.com which isn't working. For this Sunday, if you want me to run the publishing script to carry out the mass messages I can, just let me know. DannyS712 (talk) 19:50, 25 February 2021 (UTC)
Eddie871 will be doing the publishing this Sunday. Maybe over the long-run you could check in at the Newsroom talk page, say 10 days before publication, and see if you could fill in if he isn't available. Thanks. Smallbones(smalltalk) 01:45, 26 February 2021 (UTC)
@Smallbones I've created a new email, though for now its only enabled on meta - can you email me if its still relevant? m:Special:EmailUser/DannyS712 DannyS712 (talk) 12:53, 15 March 2021 (UTC)
Everything is cool for now. Perhaps today or tomorrow I'll send an email that way, just to see if it works! Smallbones(smalltalk) 14:59, 15 March 2021 (UTC)

Possible DiscussionCloser issue

Hi, DannyS712,

A recent close somehow dropped an end-div tag, and an end-italic markup token. DiscussionCloser 1.7.3 was used at this RM, but it's not clear if the script is involved in the problem or not. Prior details and links are given at User talk:Buidhe/Archive 14#Unbalanced div's in RM closure. User:Buidhe fixed part of the problem with the RM closure on the Talk page with this edit (supplying missing </div>), and I fixed the other half of the problem with this edit (supplying missing end-italic markup). Would you mind having a look to see what you can find? Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 03:53, 26 February 2021 (UTC)

@Mathglot I haven't changed anything with the script recently (though I'm slowly working on a rewrite) - were the templates changed? DannyS712 (talk) 06:34, 26 February 2021 (UTC)
I'm unfamiliar with the script or the templates; what templates are used with it? If it's a template problem, I can fix it. Mathglot (talk) 06:53, 26 February 2021 (UTC)
The {{RM top}} and {{RM bottom}} DannyS712 (talk) 16:35, 26 February 2021 (UTC)
Thanks. RM Bottom has two changes in the last ten days; will be able to look at it in 2-3 days. Mathglot (talk) 18:20, 26 February 2021 (UTC)

Foreign API

Hello, Danny. If it's possible, could you please to write me down a little example for using Foreign API? It's hard to find it in the script or extension code, because of a lot of variables. Something hardcoded. For example, how to read first 100 new watchlist edits in plwiki from here? Thank you very much in advance. IKhitron (talk) 11:22, 1 March 2021 (UTC)

  • When protecting a page with Twinkle, you can now add a note if doing so was in response to a request at WP:RfPP, and even link to the specific revision.
  • There have been a number of reported issues with Pending Changes. Most problems setting protection appear to have been resolved (phab:T273317) but other issues with autoaccepting edits persist (phab:T275322).

WikiCup 2021 March newsletter

Round 1 of the competition has finished; it was a high-scoring round with 21 contestants scoring more than 100 points. Everyone with a positive score moves on to Round 2, with 55 contestants qualifying. You will need to finish among the top thirty-two contestants in Round 2 if you are to qualify for Round 3. Our top scorers in Round 1 were:

  •   Epicgenius led the field with a featured article, nine good articles and an assortment of other submissions, specialising on buildings and locations in New York, for a total of 945 points.
  •   Bloom6132 was close behind with 896 points, largely gained from 71 "In the news" items, mostly recent deaths.
  •   ImaginesTigers, who has been editing Wikipedia for less than a year, was in third place with 711 points, much helped by bringing League of Legends to featured article status, exemplifying how bonus points can boost a contestant's score.
  •   Amakuru came next with 708 points, Kigali being another featured article that scored maximum bonus points.
  •   Ktin, new to the WikiCup, was in fifth place with 523 points, garnered from 15 DYKs and 34 "In the news" items.
  •   The Rambling Man scored 511 points, many from featured article candidate reviews and from football related DYKs.
  •   Gog the Mild, last year's runner-up, came next with 498 points, from a featured article and numerous featured article candidate reviews.
  •   Hog Farm, at 452, scored for a featured article, four good articles and a number of reviews.
  •   Le Panini, another newcomer to the WikiCup, scored 438 for a featured article and three good articles.
  •   Lee Vilenski, last year's champion, scored 332 points, from a featured article and various other sport-related topics.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. In Round 1, contestants achieved eight featured articles, three featured lists and one featured picture, as well as around two hundred DYKs and twenty-seven ITNs. They completed 97 good article reviews, nearly double the 52 good articles they claimed. Contestants also claimed for 135 featured article and featured list candidate reviews. There is no longer a requirement to mention your WikiCup participation when undertaking these reviews.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is a good article candidate, a featured process, or something else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Sturmvogel 66 (talk) and Cwmhiraeth (talk). Commons issue

Hi, Danny - would you be so kind as to take a look at the discussion I started here? It hasn't gotten any response, and those modifications are desperately needed. I'm of the mind that it will help reduce the workload for Otrs volunteers and improve the upload experience for people who are contributing images for our articles. It seems to me like a simple enough tweak to the generator script that wouldn't require much effort, or would it? I think it will save thousands of hours of repetitive responses by Otrs agents, upload delays and frustration by contributors if they know in advance what OTRS requires. Do you have any pull at all in that area, or can you direct me to someone who does? Atsme 💬 📧 15:25, 17 March 2021 (UTC)

Page mover/delete-redirect

Hello, I closed the RFC you started: Wikipedia:Page mover/delete-redirect as consensus for the change after reading your points at the bottom of the discussion. However closing clear consensus discussions is not advised and since it was a WP:NAC, it could be reverted, although I don't see any need in this case why that should happen. Terasail[✉] 14:11, 22 March 2021 (UTC)

@Terasail: Thanks, will write the code change DannyS712 (talk) 14:23, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
@Terasail: Hi. Although closing that RfC is not a problem, it should have been someone who could make the remaining appropriate changes. That is, inclusion of the new user-ability into the user-right page, and updating the {{Proposal}} on Wikipedia:Page mover/delete-redirect. And then there are few other things too. —usernamekiran (talk) 14:31, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
@Usernamekiran: Yeah, I have read all that before doing this, and most of that text refers to closing deletion discussions where only Admins can delete the page, however in this case I don't see that as applying since DannyS712 said they would write the code for this change (Bottom of the closed RFC) and the close was just to stop the rfc developing after the system change has been made since it isn't just a policy change. I went to eat so I didn't make a change to the template. (Which was just bad timng on my part) Terasail[✉] 14:42, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
@Terasail @Usernamekiran the actual code change cannot be done by anyone onwiki, but I've submitted a patch that should be deployed in a few hours, and will update the Wikipedia:Page mover page once it is deployed DannyS712 (talk) 15:24, 22 March 2021 (UTC)

Template:Samsung-mobile-stub

Hello, DannyS712,

Your bot edited this template and since it can't answer questions, I'm going to ask you. Some parts of this template states it is for Nokia stubs and other parts say Samsung. Is it one or the other? I had to remove a category field that caused an enormous red link category to appear. Thanks for any help you can offer to resolve this. Liz Read! Talk! 02:48, 8 April 2021 (UTC)

The bot was just fixing the template name, which was broken in Special:Diff/1016263342 by Special:Contributions/182.1.180.184 - that same edit changed it to partially say Nokia. I would just revert to everything being Samsung to align with the title DannyS712 (talk) 03:15, 8 April 2021 (UTC)

Why?

Why did you blank my entry here? Please restore it. DuncanHill (talk) 17:12, 14 April 2021 (UTC)

As you haven't responded I have restored the page to the state before you blanked my entry. DuncanHill (talk) 17:24, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
@DuncanHill: That was likely an edit conflict, I just added a single comment and didn't change anything (though why did mediawiki not warn me... bug?) Thanks DannyS712 (talk) 18:24, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
I looked my network monitor when using the 2017 editor, and it looks like it's keeping track of the basetimestamp, but not the baserevid. Maybe you clicked "edit" at the same second as Duncan saved. Suffusion of Yellow (talk) 18:47, 14 April 2021 (UTC)

Category:Market towns

For WP:CFD#HOWTO could you please tag Category:Market towns and all its sub categories for deletion. I was initially tempted to only list England's ones but the likes of Category:Ottoman market towns doesn't have other settlement categories so I'll just do all of them. Thanks. Crouch, Swale (talk) 17:51, 18 April 2021 (UTC)

@Crouch, Swale can you please tag the main category and start the CFD, so I know where to link to for the other ones? DannyS712 (talk) 18:47, 18 April 2021 (UTC)
@Crouch, Swale Also, do you want the sub categories to be recursive? I.e. do I tag Category:Market towns in Moldavia? What about Category:Chodová Planá? --DannyS712 (talk) 18:47, 18 April 2021 (UTC)
Done Category:Market towns at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2021 April 18#Category:Market towns
Only the set categories namely "Market towns in X" not topic categories like Category:Chodová Planá that are an instance of. Crouch, Swale (talk) 19:50, 18 April 2021 (UTC)
@Crouch, Swale:   Done, see reply on cfd DannyS712 (talk) 00:08, 19 April 2021 (UTC)
Thanks but as was noted the set categories of Category:Market towns in the United Kingdom haven't been tagged. Crouch, Swale (talk) 07:50, 19 April 2021 (UTC)

Help with CFD tagging?

I originally applied for help at Bot requests but a friendly reply agreed I'd be better off at CFD. However, the list of categories which would need to be requested is about 100 in number. That friendly reply suggested you had a bot which could help (with creating or formatting nominations?). I've got a poverty of experience at CFD and I want to avoid making a mess. Is this something your bot can help with? BusterD (talk) 22:30, 21 April 2021 (UTC)

WikiCup 2021 May newsletter

The second round of the 2021 WikiCup has now finished; it was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 61 points to advance to Round 3. There were some impressive efforts in the round, with the top eight contestants all scoring more than 400 points. A large number of the points came from the 12 featured articles and the 110 good articles achieved in total by contestants, as well as the 216 good article reviews they performed; the GAN backlog drive and the stay-at-home imperative during the COVID-19 pandemic may have been partially responsible for these impressive figures.

Our top scorers in Round 2 were:

  •   The Rambling Man, with 2963 points from three featured articles, 20 featured article reviews, 37 good articles, 73 good article reviews, as well as 22 DYKs.
  •   Epicgenius, with 1718 points from one featured article, 29 good articles, 16 DYKs and plenty of bonus points.
  •   Bloom6132, with 990 points from 13 DYKs and 64 "In the news" items, mostly recent deaths.
  •   Hog Farm, with 834 points from two featured articles, five good articles, 14 featured article reviews and 15 good article reviews.
  •   Gog the Mild, with 524 points from two featured articles and four featured article reviews.
  •   Lee Vilenski, with 501 points from one featured article, three good articles, six featured article reviews and 25 good article reviews.
  •   Sammi Brie, with 485 points from four good articles, eight good article reviews and 27 DYKs, on US radio and television stations.
  •   Ktin, with 436 points from four good articles, seven DYKs and 11 "In the news" items.

Please remember that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of Round 2 but before the start of Round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in Round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (except for at the end of each round, when you must claim them before the cut-off date/time). When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
