Can you try and revive this "Simplevote" script?

  • When I was looking at old scripts, I found this one, and I thought this would make voting and commenting in afds so much easier and probably we can work this and make something similar for other discussions too?
  • Have a look at it and if possible bring life to that script. it would hell useful. QueerEcofeminist "cite! even if you fight"!!! [they/them/their] 16:35, 3 August 2019 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – August 2019

News and updates for administrators from the past month (July 2019).

  Guideline and policy news

  Arbitration

  Miscellaneous

  • Following a research project on masking IP addresses, the Foundation is starting a new project to improve the privacy of IP editors. The result of this project may significantly change administrative and counter-vandalism workflows. The project is in the very early stages of discussions and there is no concrete plan yet. Admins and the broader community are encouraged to leave feedback on the talk page.
  • The new page reviewer right is bundled with the admin tool set. Many admins regularly help out at Special:NewPagesFeed, but they may not be aware of improvements, changes, and new tools for the Curation system. Stay up to date by subscribing here to the NPP newsletter that appears every two months, and/or putting the reviewers' talk page on your watchlist.

Since the introduction of temporary user rights, it is becoming more usual to accord the New Page Reviewer right on a probationary period of 3 to 6 months in the first instance. This avoids rights removal for inactivity at a later stage and enables a review of their work before according the right on a permanent basis.

DYK for Herrera v. Wyoming

On 6 August 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Herrera v. Wyoming, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that in a 2019 court case, the US Supreme Court ruled that Wyoming's statehood did not void the Crow Tribe's right to hunt on unoccupied lands? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Herrera v. Wyoming. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Herrera v. Wyoming), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Bots Newsletter, August 2019

Bots Newsletter, August 2019

Greetings!

Here is the 7th issue of the Bots Newsletter, a lot happened since last year's newsletter! You can subscribe/unsubscribe from future newsletters by adding/removing your name from this list.

Highlights for this newsletter include:

ARBCOM
  • Nothing of note happened. Just like we like it.
BAG

BAG members are expected to be active on Wikipedia to have their finger on the pulse of the community. After two years without any bot-related activity (such as posting on bot-related pages, posting on a bot's talk page, or operating a bot), BAG members will be retired from BAG following a one-week notice. Retired members can re-apply for BAG membership as normal if they wish to rejoin the BAG.

We thank former members for their service and wish Madman a happy retirement. We note that Madman and BU Rob13 were not inactive and could resume their BAG positions if they so wished, should their retirements happens to be temporary.

BOTDICT

Two new entries feature in the bots dictionary

BOTPOL
  • Activity requirements: BAG members now have an activity requirement. The requirements are very light, one only needs to be involved in a bot-related area at some point within the last two years. For purpose of meeting these requirements, discussing a bot-related matter anywhere on Wikipedia counts, as does operating a bot (RFC).
  • Copyvio flag: Bot accounts may be additionally marked by a bureaucrat upon BAG request as being in the "copyviobot" user group on Wikipedia. This flag allows using the API to add metadata to edits for use in the New pages feed (discussion). There is currently 1 bot using this functionality.
  • Mass creation: The restriction on mass-creation (semi-automated or automated) was extended from articles, to all content-pages. There are subtleties, but content here broadly means whatever a reader could land on when browsing the mainspace in normal circumstances (e.g. Mainspace, Books, most Categories, Portals, ...). There is also a warning that WP:MEATBOT still applies in other areas (e.g. Redirects, Wikipedia namespace, Help, maintenance categories, ...) not explicitely covered by WP:MASSCREATION.
BOTREQs and BRFAs

As of writing, we have...

  • 20 active BOTREQs, please help if you can!
  • 14 open BRFAs and 1 BRFA in need of BAG attention (see live status).
  • In 2018, 96 bot task were approved. An AWB search shows approximately 29 were withdrawn/expired, and 6 were denied.
  • Since the start of 2019, 97 bot task were approved. Logs show 15 were withdrawn/expired, and 15 were denied.
  • 10 inactive bots have been deflagged (see discussion). 5 other bots have been deflagged per operator requests or similar (see discussion).
New things
Other discussions

These are some of the discussions that happened / are still happening since the last Bots Newsletter. Many are stale, but some are still active.

Script help

Hey Danny, could you tell me what code can prevent a script from loading on non-existent pages? I am not experienced at coding JS, so I am asking you. Thanks in advance. Masum Reza📞 21:07, 10 August 2019 (UTC)

@Masumrezarock100: is the problem that you want the script to load and it isn't, or that you don't want it to load but it is? DannyS712 (talk) 21:08, 10 August 2019 (UTC)
The second one. I don't want to load this script but it is. I want my MobileMoreLinks to load in pages that exists. For example, this page doesn't exist but this script loads here. Masum Reza📞 21:13, 10 August 2019 (UTC)
@Masumrezarock100: mw.config.get( 'wgArticleId' ); will return 0 if the page doesn't exist --DannyS712 (talk) 21:16, 10 August 2019 (UTC)
So something like this
 if ( mw.config.get( 'wgArticleId' ) && mw.config.get( 'wgArticleId' ) !== 0 ) {Code}
. Does this work for pages in other namespace too? Masum Reza📞 21:22, 10 August 2019 (UTC)
@Masumrezarock100: yes, it does --DannyS712 (talk) 21:27, 10 August 2019 (UTC)
Many thanks. Masum Reza📞 21:30, 10 August 2019 (UTC)

Global watchlist

So I was trying out the global watchlist. Would it be possible to add "filter" feature? Also I can't view the diffs of changes using this watchlist. It would be better if you make it more like local watchlist. Masum Reza📞 15:25, 11 August 2019 (UTC)

@Masumrezarock100: its still a work it progress. What filter do you want? --DannyS712 (talk) 21:37, 11 August 2019 (UTC)
I mean filters that already exists in the local watchlist. I am looking for likely bad faith filter though, because it's useful for counter-vandalism. Masum Reza📞 21:42, 11 August 2019 (UTC)
@Masumrezarock100: oh - that depends on ORES, and not all sites have those filters. I probably won't be able to add them, sorry --DannyS712 (talk) 21:46, 11 August 2019 (UTC)
I see. Also I noticed that I can only see a list of pages, I can't expand them to see which users have edited those pages. Masum Reza📞 21:50, 11 August 2019 (UTC)
@Masumrezarock100: Again, I'm still working on it - that's one of the features I'm looking to add --DannyS712 (talk) 21:51, 11 August 2019 (UTC)
Hmm. I see now. Another thing, you said on the documentation page that you want to make it available in other languages. Is it available on Translatewiki for translation? I know Bengali and I'd love to translate it if you want. Masum Reza📞 21:55, 11 August 2019 (UTC)
@Masumrezarock100: No, its not available there yet, but I'm working on figuring out how I can make it publicly translatable. I'll let you know when I have something --DannyS712 (talk) 21:59, 11 August 2019 (UTC)
@Masumrezarock100: Its now available at User:DannyS712/Global watchlist/Translate - if there isn't a column for the language you want to add just add one (I suggest using the visual editor - it makes it easier to key track of the rows) DannyS712 (talk) 02:09, 15 August 2019 (UTC)
Question: Do I need to translate texts under English column and/or Explanation column? Masum Reza📞 02:18, 15 August 2019 (UTC)
@Masumrezarock100: you translate the text under the English column. The explanation column explains where the message is used, in case the context helps. DannyS712 (talk) 02:19, 15 August 2019 (UTC)
Done I was having trouble translating Only non-bot edits. So I translated the Bengali text from Only edits made by humans (not bot). Another thing, I thought meta wiki is where people do translating. Is it acceptable for English Wikipedia? Masum Reza📞 04:52, 15 August 2019 (UTC)
@Masumrezarock100: generally, meta wiki is where this would take place, but it shouldn't matter where. I'll probably migrate it over at some point. Also, what is the language code for Bengali? DannyS712 (talk) 05:19, 15 August 2019 (UTC)
It's "bn". Masum Reza📞 05:21, 15 August 2019 (UTC)
@Masumrezarock100: its added - try it now DannyS712 (talk) 05:33, 15 August 2019 (UTC)
Not bad. All of the translated texts are showing properly. Another thing, it's about the loading icon. I think it's bigger than usual and not showing properly. The corners are blurry. It's like what happens if you zoom a low or mid quality JPEG file too much. It's not a svg file, I am presuming. Masum Reza📞 05:42, 15 August 2019 (UTC)
@Masumrezarock100: thats how it looks on commons... I'll look for a better one at somepoint DannyS712 (talk) 05:48, 15 August 2019 (UTC)
What's the gif page on Commons? I'll probably be able to find a better one. Masum Reza📞 05:52, 15 August 2019 (UTC)
@Masumrezarock100: File:Loading_2_transparent.gif. There are better ones, but it has to be public domain because there isn't anywhere to put attribution DannyS712 (talk) 05:54, 15 August 2019 (UTC)
I see. I found this. A list of svg and css loaders, may be you can create animation similar to these. IMO, gif are pretty useless when it is used in multiple screen sizes. Masum Reza📞 06:04, 15 August 2019 (UTC)
@Masumrezarock100: thanks. I look into changing it DannyS712 (talk) 06:05, 15 August 2019 (UTC)
@Masumrezarock100: now at m:User:DannyS712/Global watchlist/Translate - I copied over all of the translations you made. Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 06:45, 18 August 2019 (UTC)
Done translating the last message. I also added few french translations. Masum Reza📞 07:04, 18 August 2019 (UTC)

Request for a new user script

Hi greetings, I am requesting you to create a new user script in Wikipedia which helps to merge articles easily. Please consider this request. I added my suggestion in WP:US/R. I think you can create this. It'll be a great help in merging articles. I hope this script should help to do all things listed in WP:MERGETEXT. My suggestions on the tool are...

  • A double window tool which can display both source page (say first) and destination page (say second) in editing mode. We can copy and paste the good content from first page to second page. This pages can determine by adding the names in tool before merging.
  • After this, tool should blank the page and redirect to second with appropriate edit summaries. Like this second page also should saved with edit summary.
  • Remove the merge templates from second page.
  • If first page has a talk page, reconcile it. Change the class in Wikiproject templates to Redirect.
  • Add merger templates such as {{merged-from}}, {{merged-to}} or {{copied}} in talk pages.
  • Automatically fix double redirects.

This is only some suggestions in my mind. You can change as your choice. It will be very beneficial to users who perform merging if this tool become available. I think there is no other scripts regarding this. Hope that you will consider this. Thank you.--PATH SLOPU 11:17, 15 August 2019 (UTC)

@Path slopu: I saw the request at US/R - its on my long-term to-do list, but I'm probably not going to get to it anytime soon, especially given how complex this would be. Sorry, but don't get your hopes up --DannyS712 (talk) 11:20, 15 August 2019 (UTC)

Should the protection length for this be shortened? Three years seems overkill considering the previous protections were of a much shorter length and there was, as far as I can tell, only one spate of protection back in June. I would normally have asked the protecting admin Materialscientist, but he doesn't appear to respond to talk page messages and apparently he has pings disabled, so I'm asking you as you were the other editor involved during that episode. I'm aware that the protection was due to some kind of farm, but isn't three years for one incident a bit too long? Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 02:29, 16 August 2019 (UTC)

@Narutolovehinata5: You should probably ask at WP:RPP. Masum Reza📞 03:14, 16 August 2019 (UTC)
I already have, I was just asking for Danny's opinion on the matter (also, I posted this comment before realizing that Danny isn't an admin). Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 03:16, 16 August 2019 (UTC)
@Narutolovehinata5: I've replied at WP:RPP - I agree that it is too long --DannyS712 (talk) 04:37, 16 August 2019 (UTC)

Database reports

I am very interested in this report Wikipedia:Database reports/Orphans with incoming links, can you configure it to just 1 link as per current orphan definition? Thanks! --Xaiver0510 (talk) 06:44, 16 August 2019 (UTC)

@Xaiver0510: I could, but not all links count for orphans, so I wanted to be on the safe side DannyS712 (talk) 06:45, 16 August 2019 (UTC)
@DannyS712: I understand the concern of using a list to feed into AWB and auto de-orphan by mistake. I am doing it manually, clicking article by article, visual check before de-orphaning it (or other actions as needed). I also understand if you have the concern that others beside me might do the above, you can put the results on a separate subpage or on my subpage. I probably need a one time run which is more than enough for my intended use.--Xaiver0510 (talk) 06:49, 16 August 2019 (UTC)
@Xaiver0510: I'll take a look at tweaking it DannyS712 (talk) 06:50, 16 August 2019 (UTC)

Hi there

Hey, I tried making a user box by copy pasting some code off of your page, could you tell me if I did an alright job? If you cant I would still like to thank you for being a service to the site! Bgrus22 (talk) 06:55, 20 August 2019 (UTC)

@Bgrus22: sure - I can totally take a look. I assume this is about Special:Diff/911648232, right? Do you want it to be split into the `Bgrus22` and `Babel` sections, do you want 1 column with `Bgrus22` but that includes the current native english template? DannyS712 (talk) 06:59, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
@DannyS712: I’m more curious if there’s a way to separate the section “hello world” from the user box and possibly align it somehow. I did try combining the boxes originally, but that proved to be rather difficult for me... also if you don’t mind my asking since I saw that you’ve a knowledge of CS would you happen to know the average price for a custom reskin for a Wordpress website? Btw, thanks for getting back to me so soon! Bgrus22 (talk) 20 August 2019
@Bgrus22: I'll do my best. Where do you want it aligned? And sorry, I have no idea how much a reskin would be - I'm not familiar with Wordpress. Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 02:29, 21 August 2019 (UTC)
@DannyS712: I assume right align is the convention, but I dont want it pushing the hello world under it. Ideally I'd want them to be even if thats possible. Bgrus22 (talk) 04:54, 21 August 2019 (UTC)
@Bgrus22: Take a look at this - is that what you want? DannyS712 (talk) 04:59, 21 August 2019 (UTC)
@DannyS712: You know, I had so little content on my page that it looks empty left aligned and combined. I think I will put it back as 2 separate boxes that are right aligned, but than you for all the help!! Bgrus22 (talk) 05:06, 21 August 2019 (UTC)

State symbols redirects

Hi, last month you created several redirects requested at AFC/R; they concern various "state symbols" of Kashmir (all the redirects from here until the end of the page). The IP who requested them was a sock, an especially prolific one. You can see Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Zeshan Mahmood, but the cases in the archive are only the tip of the iceberg. They usually edit using IPs that geolocate to the area around Manchester and they're almost exclusively concerned with various national or provincial symbols of Pakistan and India. Their suggestions have on rare occasions been correct, but most of the time they have turned out to be made up. That person has been especially diligent in promoting these symbols on this wikipedia, on other language wikipedias, on various non-wikipedia wikis as well as on other sites with user-generated content (like quora, which is what they've cited when requesting the redirects). – Uanfala (talk) 12:45, 20 August 2019 (UTC)

@Uanfala: thanks for letting me know - I'll be more alert in the future. If you think they should be deleted (I'm not familiar with the case, and don't know the topic well) feel free to tag them per G7 and link to this discussion - I have no objections. Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 12:47, 20 August 2019 (UTC)

Bot Request

Hey DS, hoping I can request a task for User:DannyS712 bot: Wikipedia:WikiProject Climate change has recently been created as a "promostion" of Wikipedia:WikiProject Environment/Climate change task force. Would it be possible to run the bot on every talk page currently containing {{WikiProject Environment|climate change=yes}} and add {{WikiProject Climate change}} to each one, along with copying the class= , importance= and listas= parameters from the old tag to the new tag? If there is a better bot to do this, let me know. Thanks in advance. UnitedStatesian (talk) 16:57, 20 August 2019 (UTC)

@UnitedStatesian: do you want the old tag removed, the old tag left but the climate change=yes removed, or the old tag kept? DannyS712 (talk) 17:00, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
Just the climate change=yes parameter removed, please; I will then deprecate it from {{WikiProject Environment}}. UnitedStatesian (talk) 17:02, 20 August 2019 (UTC)

Two Quarrys

Can you help me create two Quarrys:

Thank you! Your help has been immensely helpful in the selection of featured content on Main Page. --- Coffeeandcrumbs 23:27, 28 August 2019 (UTC)

@Coffeeandcrumbs: See Quarry:query/36826 and Quarry:query/35744 DannyS712 (talk) 00:37, 29 August 2019 (UTC)
Is there a way to return page_title instead of page_id? Or is there an easy way (Special page or template) for translating page ID to links on en.wiki that I am not aware of? --- Coffeeandcrumbs 01:02, 29 August 2019 (UTC)
@Coffeeandcrumbs: Special:Redirect/page/$1 redirects the page id to the page DannyS712 (talk) 01:06, 29 August 2019 (UTC)
Perfect! Thank you!!! --- Coffeeandcrumbs 01:07, 29 August 2019 (UTC)

Going back to the first one you wrote for me, I noticed it does not catch articles that are linked through a redirect. Is there a way to fix that? Notice I have made a few changes since the original, so I would appreciate if you started from the September 2 Quarry. (Before I made this edit, the Quarry missed Liliʻuokalani.)

Thanks! Your work has contributed to a lot of nice articles being included on the Main Page already. For example, the very awesome article Guy Burgess, on the Main Page today, would never have been located without these Quarries. --- Coffeeandcrumbs 15:24, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

@Coffeeandcrumbs: sorry, but linking through redirects is going to take a couple more steps, and I don't have time today. I'll try to get to it soon DannyS712 (talk) 23:08, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

Help with preparing list for MMS

Hi - thank you for offering to help with explaining Wikipedia_talk:Mass_message_senders. I've prepared a list here, but I don't know how to get it into the correct format. I've tried using AutoWikiBrowser to do it - something I used to use a lot >10 years ago, but I can't figure out how to do it. Can you tell me how I can get this formatted correctly so I can submit it to WT:MMS? Thanks, Walkerma (talk) 02:42, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

@Walkerma: you want to post on these articles' talk pages? DannyS712 (talk) 02:51, 30 August 2019 (UTC)
Sorry, no - these are all WikiProject talk pages, so they would be prepended with Wikipedia_talk:Wikiproject_ and whatever formatting you need for that to make it a usable link.Walkerma (talk) 03:20, 30 August 2019 (UTC)
@Walkerma: I converted the list you made into a mass message list at Wikipedia talk:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/ListOfProjects, but not all of the links are valid DannyS712 (talk) 04:39, 30 August 2019 (UTC)
Thank you! I'd forgotten that some will be classed as task forces, not full projects, so they will be redlinked, but their parent WikiProjects will be listed correctly. I'll see if I can remove the dead links today, if I get some time. Thanks, Walkerma (talk) 12:38, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

Press release: WP:Archer used to break new Wikipedia record

This is the announcement that I hinted at before (see above). I made a new userscript, and for my birthday I made Wikipedia history (diff & entry). I'd love a blurb in the Scripts++ Newsletter! –MJLTalk 03:38, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

Just so you know, the numbers break down evenly like so:
2002-08-13 13:55:41 Jeronimo (talk · contribs) fixes a redirect
2019-08-13 13:55:20 I tag the redirect
That means there are exactly 17 years (the longest on record) and 21 seconds (it was my 21st birthday) in between the two edits. (edit conflict)MJLTalk 03:45, 31 August 2019 (UTC)
@MJL: Nice, I'll see what I can do. Unfortunately, I wasn't planning on writing a newsletter this month, but at the end of September I'll be sure to include it DannyS712 (talk) 03:39, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

Newsletter • August 2019

Welcome to the fifth and final issue of the Timeless newsletter!

Progress was made. True story.

I am happy to announce that after about a year, this delightful project in which absolutely nothing has gone according to plan is coming to a close. Or at least, the grant-funded portion is. Which means we will now be resuming our regular schedule of random whims-based development, you probably won't notice any difference whatsoever unless you use MonoBook, and there's a report.

What's new from the past two months:

A lot less than we'd hoped, frankly. We:

We also wound up with:

  • Patches resulting in RelatedArticles working in MonoBook, and FlaggedRevisions showing up in Minerva, unless someone actually managed to turn that off as well. (Blame T181242.) It's possible we went a little overboard with the whole 'let's close all the tasks!' sprint.
  • An unfortunate repeated discovery that themes (the Night/Winter variants I keep insisting will happen at some point) are still pretty far off on the horizon. Um.
  • Possibly a quite a few more bugs coming your way. This month, and especially the past week, have been a bit of a mess, development-wise. While hopefully none of the worse issues make it to production, please keep the reports coming for whatever you do find and we'll get it fixed as soon as we can. Y'all've been amazing about this, and it's really appreciated.

And I guess that's that. I'm really bad at reporting, and this is a report. For the purposes of the grant, this was a requirement, but do you want me to keep trying to send these out?

Filter 123

As you can (now) see, that didn't turn out to be a common form of vandalism. Most of the hits were, at least, good faith attempts at ... something. IMO, it's not worth refining the filter to catch the occasional vandalism. It's easy enough to revert, anyway. Suffusion of Yellow (talk) 21:26, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

@Suffusion of Yellow: Thanks for checking though. Also, T212082 would ensure that, if it was enabled, it wouldn't cause too many issues... DannyS712 (talk) 21:28, 31 August 2019 (UTC)
There's also stuff like Special:AbuseLog/24666467 (moving another user's misplaced draft), and Special:AbuseLog/24570006 (I don't know, but it's not vandalism and tripped filter 5 anyway), etc. Of course we could try to make all sorts of exceptions, but with the vandalism so rare, I don't think it's worth it. WikiCup 2019 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished in a flurry of last minute activity, with 454 points being required to qualify for the final round. It was a hotly competitive round with two contestants with over 400 points being eliminated, and all but two of the finalists having achieved an FA during the round. Casliber, our 2016 winner, was the highest point-scorer, followed by Enwebb and Lee Vilenski, who are both new to the competition. In fourth place was SounderBruce, a finalist last year. But all those points are swept away as we start afresh for the final round.

Round 4 saw the achievement of 11 featured articles. In addition, Adam Cuerden scored with 18 FPs, Lee Vilenski led the GA score with 8 GAs while Kosack performed 15 GA reviews. There were around 40 DYKs, 40 GARs and 31 GAs overall during round 4. Even though contestants performed more GARs than they achieved GAs, there was still some frustration at the length of time taken to get articles reviewed.

As we start round 5, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (some people have fallen foul of this rule and the points have been removed).

If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Your draft article, Draft:List of Ophir Award winners

Hello, DannyS712. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "List of Ophir Award winners".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}}, {{db-draft}}, or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

The Irishman (2019 film) poster.jpg

I don't understand why the image has been nominated for speedy deletion? Could you please explain to me? Thanks. --Mazewaxie (talkcontribs) 19:55, 2 September 2019 (UTC)

@Mazewaxie: the local description page included a non-free use rationale template. But, the file is on commons, and is in the public domain, so it isi free to use. I removed the non-free use template, and since the local page was then blanked, asked that the description page on enwiki be deleted; the actual file won't be deleted DannyS712 (talk) 19:56, 2 September 2019 (UTC)
Oh, okay. I messed it up when uploading the poster, I meant to upload it directly on Wikipedia (like pretty much every poster is) but on the Commons help desk they told me that is fine even if it is on Commons. --Mazewaxie (talkcontribs) 20:04, 2 September 2019 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) -- @Mazewaxie: I think you should put {{SD|G1}} on the Commons file to request deletion. Then I can upload the file to Wikipedia for you. Right now the situation is precarious, copyright-wise, and I can get a better file uploaded that the current version. What you have now is a lower resolution than what is possible with fair use. --- Coffeeandcrumbs 22:43, 2 September 2019 (UTC)
Done. So you will upload it to Wikipedia? If that's the case, thank you so much. --Mazewaxie (talkcontribs) 09:58, 3 September 2019 (UTC)
@Coffeeandcrumbs: Is it ok now? --Mazewaxie (talkcontribs) 16:38, 4 September 2019 (UTC)
Mazewaxie, I have uploaded a higher resolution image that a bot will automatically reduce to the proper size soon. You are good to go! No further changes are necessary. --- Coffeeandcrumbs 17:00, 4 September 2019 (UTC)
@Coffeeandcrumbs: Thank you for you help. When the theatrical release poster will come out, could I simply replace the current one by "uploading a new version of this file" right? --Mazewaxie (talkcontribs) 09:30, 5 September 2019 (UTC)
Mazewaxie, yeah, no problem to replace on top existing poster. Make sure to update the Source link to the new URL where you got the file. You should always upload the highest resolution available and then add {{Non-free reduce}} to the very top of the file page. Letting the bot take care of the rest. Please come to my talk page if you ever need help. DannyS712, thank you for hosting us. --- Coffeeandcrumbs 09:54, 5 September 2019 (UTC)

Prima divisio

Hello, I noticed that you reviewed the article Prima divisio that I translated from the Dutch Wikipedia. You are rquesting sources for the first and third paragraphs. I didn't realise that for general historical knowledge references were required. I will try to find a reference for the date of the exhibition in Vianden Castle. @Royalty & Nassau Expert: thanks --DannyS712 (talk) 17:28, 3 September 2019 (UTC)
I have added references to the article. I did not add references to the paragraphs under the first heading and the first paragraph under the third heading as those texts are either general historical knowledge or a summary from the sources mentioned under the heading Sources. I hope it is up to your expectations. Regards, --Royalty & Nassau Expert (talk) 19:03, 4 September 2019 (UTC)

Help on creating bot

Hi greetings, I am seeking your help on creating a bot in Wikipedia. I would like to use JWB for running the bot. I have already a bot account named Pathbot. I am using JWB for doing some repetitive tasks and I would like to do this jobs with bot for increasing the efficiency. Do I need any extra requirement other than bot flag to do tasks with JWB? Hope that you'll help. Thank you.--PATH SLOPU 14:51, 5 September 2019 (UTC)

GW Settings

Hey, I was trying to add ja.wikipedia to GW settings on meta:Special:BlankPage/GlobalWatchlistConfig. But for some reason, settings are not saving. I can't seem to change other settings (anonymous, register user) either. Maybe it's a bug. Masum Reza📞 19:19, 5 September 2019 (UTC)

@Masumrezarock100: what web browser are you using? Please try again, and after you hit save, if it doesn't work, open your javascript console, run GlobalWatchlist.debug.getState(); and paste the result here. See Wikipedia:Reporting JavaScript errors for a full explanation DannyS712 (talk) 23:19, 5 September 2019 (UTC)
I was using Chrome Dev 78.0.3895.0 for Android. I am a heavy mobile editor, and I rarely edit using PC. So I can't really paste the results. Not until I feel like it. :P Anyway, I ran a test from my Chrome Dev and now it is working! From what I can gather, it needs to have some sort of configuration code in global.js to make automatic edits. See this diff and the next diff for example. I think removing the configuration code from your global.js and then trying to add sites from the script menu, should reproduce this problem. Masum Reza📞 17:35, 6 September 2019 (UTC)
@Masumrezarock100: That wasn't the issue. Its because your import is `Global_watchlist` instead of `Global watchlist`, which the script looks for - at some point I'll introduce a regex to account for underscores DannyS712 (talk) 17:37, 6 September 2019 (UTC)
I see. Masum Reza📞 17:51, 6 September 2019 (UTC)
Maybe you can add mobile Minerva skin support? I just checked the source code of the Special:BlankPage/GlobalWatchlist subpage, and there shouldn't be any problems appending the script to DOM. Masum Reza📞 20:01, 7 September 2019 (UTC)
@Masumrezarock100: I've added support for minerva in the last few updates, but generally is doesn't run on mobile... DannyS712 (talk) 20:03, 7 September 2019 (UTC)
....it seems that globalJS doesn't run on mobile DannyS712 (talk) 20:05, 7 September 2019 (UTC)
Is that so? Then it should be accessible by importing in the minerva.js subpage. Let me check. About the globalJS thing, I noticed it too. Is there any other global js file for mobile? Or maybe we can create a phab task to add support for mobile website. Masum Reza📞 20:11, 7 September 2019 (UTC)
@Masumrezarock100: if you create a phab task, I would support it. Until then, no idea. But, testing from my browser in mobile view, it doesn't. You have to manually load the script, and then manually fix the api origin to reflect mobile DannyS712 (talk) 20:15, 7 September 2019 (UTC)
I am checking the script using my mobile browser, for some reason it's taking forever to load. Let me create a phab task, but what projects I should include? Masum Reza📞 20:21, 7 September 2019 (UTC)
@Masumrezarock100: `GlobalCssJs`, `Mobile` - checked with the console; after the next update (give me a minute) manually importing the script and your config by pasting them into the console will work DannyS712 (talk) 20:27, 7 September 2019 (UTC)
The phab task is here. I am terrible at writing task description though. I've subscribed you to it. Hope you don't mind. Masum Reza📞 20:36, 7 September 2019 (UTC)
Hurrah, it's working. :) Thanks fir making it Minerva compatible. Cheers. Masum Reza📞 09:55, 8 September 2019 (UTC)

Script help

How can I check the relevant user ID and user groups using JS? wgUserGroups only returns my own user groups and it's the same case for wgUserId. It doesn't seem like there is any other related wg variables here. Masum Reza📞 17:51, 6 September 2019 (UTC)

@Masumrezarock100: User:Amorymeltzer/userinfo.js uses an API query to find out - search for `If on a user or user talk page` on the page --DannyS712 (talk) 17:57, 6 September 2019 (UTC)

Non-admin closures resulting in "delete"

Hi DannyS712, I know you're trying to help, but non-admins should not close deletion discussions as "delete" since they do not have the capability to delete articles. See this page, which says "non-admins should not close a discussion as delete, because only admins can delete pages". Thanks! -- Rockstonetalk to me! 03:01, 8 September 2019 (UTC)

@Rockstone35: Thanks, but CfD works a little differently - see Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Administrator instructions - If you are a non-admin, you will not be able to use the /Working page as it is protected, so do not close discussions that require any of the above 3 actions unless you are prepared to implement them manually, or an admin has agreed to help you. A few admins have been helping me - I post the closes at the bot talk page, admins copy them over (its protected) and then a bot automatically carries out CfD closes, since before deletion categories need to be emptied --DannyS712 (talk) 03:05, 8 September 2019 (UTC)

New Page Review newsletter September-October 2019

Hello DannyS712,

Backlog

Instead of reaching a magic 300 as it once did last year, the backlog approaching 6,000 is still far too high. An effort is also needed to ensure that older unsuitable older pages at the back of the queue do not get automatically indexed for Google.

Coordinator

A proposal is taking place here to confirm a nominated user as Coordinator of NPR.

This month's refresher course

Why I Hate Speedy Deleters, a 2008 essay by long since retired Ballonman, is still as valid today. Those of us who patrol large numbers of new pages can be forgiven for making the occasional mistake while others can learn from their 'beginner' errors. Worth reading.

Deletion tags

Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon (you will need to have 'Nominated for deletion' enabled for this in your filters) may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders using Twinkle. They require your further verification.

Paid editing

Please be sure to look for the tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. WMF policy requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.

Subject-specific notability guidelines' (SNG). Alternatives to deletion
  • Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves once more with notability guidelines for organisations and companies.
  • Blank-and-Redirect is a solution anchored in policy. Please consider this alternative before PRODing or CSD. Note however, that users will often revert or usurp redirects to re-create deleted articles. Do regularly patrol the redirects in the feed.
Not English
  • A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, and if they do have potential, tag as required, then move to draft. Modify the text of the template as appropriate before sending it.
Tools

Regular reviewers will appreciate the most recent enhancements to the New Pages Feed and features in the Curation tool, and there are still more to come. Due to the wealth of information now displayed by ORES, reviewers are strongly encouraged to use the system now rather than Twinkle; it will also correctly populate the logs.

Stub sorting, by SD0001: A new script is available for adding/removing stub tags. See User:SD0001/StubSorter.js, It features a simple HotCat-style dynamic search field. Many of the reviewers who are using it are finding it an improvement upon other available tools.

Assessment: The script at User:Evad37/rater makes the addition of Wikiproject templates extremely easy. New page creators rarely do this. Reviewers are not obliged to make these edits but they only take a few seconds. They can use the Curation message system to let the creator know what they have done.

DannyS712 bot III is now patrolling certain categories of uncontroversial redirects. Curious? Check out its patrol log.

Bot

G'day Danny, the recent bot task you put together for Milhist biographies might have some other uses. For example, if a Milhist article has a WikiProject Ships banner, the bot could add the Maritime task force, and if it had an WikiProject Aviation banner, it could be put into the Aviation task force. There are probably other ones, but they are the ones that jump out at me on first glance. Thoughts? Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 03:16, 12 September 2019 (UTC)

@Peacemaker67: sure - can you ask around and see if there is consensus or any objections? DannyS712 (talk) 03:17, 12 September 2019 (UTC)
I've added a post on the original thread at Milhist talk. Cheers, Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 03:24, 12 September 2019 (UTC)

Hello DannyS712. Global watchlist script

HI DannyS712, I've discovered your global watchlist version a few days ago (I already translated the sub-page messages) and would like to try it on French Wikipedia, but I can't find any documentation about how to install/configure/use it. Several years ago I used another script which is not maintained yet and doesn't work anymore, so I hope I'll be able to use your version soon! Could you help me using it? Djiboun (talk) 08:09, 15 September 2019 (UTC)

@Djiboun: A few things:
  1. In https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Djiboun/global.js&diff=prev&oldid=19380691, I think you tried to comment out the rest of the javascript. That syntax is for html; for javascript, use /* ...code... */
  2. Once you fix the javascript issue, it should work; just go to fr:Spécial:Page_blanche/GlobalWatchlist DannyS712 (talk) 08:24, 15 September 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for your help. I changed the comments in my javascript global page, but nothing is displayed. Meanwhile I discovered the dedicated talk page and the mediawiki doc page. Could you explain me what is wrong? Djiboun (talk) 08:33, 15 September 2019 (UTC)
@Djiboun: Its probably because there was another */ already in the global.js, and so the commenting out ended early. I suggest just removing the old stuff DannyS712 (talk) 08:34, 15 September 2019 (UTC)
The script is now working. Thank you. Djiboun (talk) 15:07, 15 September 2019 (UTC)

Speedy deletions

Hello, DannyS712,

Once again, thank you for all of the work that you do. However, I do have one request. Please go to your Twinkle preferences and set it up so that every time you tag a page for deletion, it posts a notification of the tagging on to the page creator's talk page. It's a little confusing because Twinkle requires you to check a box for each type/category of speedy deletion. Often, only certain types of tagging are checked. But once you set this up and check all of the boxes, Twinkle will take care of all of the notifications for you. Thanks again! Liz Read! Talk! 21:02, 22 September 2019 (UTC)

@Liz: I already do - currently, notifications are only set up for some criteria (list below), but I have all of those enabled. See User:DannyS712/twinkleoptions.js.
