Copy edit notes
Hey, Danny! Here are a few nit-picky MOS notes on your copy edit of [[Horse Isle (video game):
- Good call to expand MMORPG in the lead. However, Massively multiplayer online role-playing game doesn't need the initial capital and the acronym should be given in parenthesis afterwards, since this is used in the infobox (MOS:ACRO).
- Titles of major works, including video games, usually get italics. Double quotes are used for titles of minor works (songs, an episode of a TV series, sometimes a chapter within a book or an act within a play). It may be a judgement call whether a version of an existing game is distinct enough to be a major or minor work on its own. The names of updates might not get this treatment, but DLCs often do. I would tend to use italics for Horse Isle: Legend of the Esrohs and Life Cycle, but double quotes (or perhaps even single quotes) might be acceptable.
- Good use of hyphens!
The MOS stuff isn't required for a copy edit of this quality, but it's good to practise for higher-quality articles. Full marks, keep up the good work! – Reidgreg (talk) 14:55, 17 April 2019 (UTC)
- @Reidgreg: thanks for the notes. --DannyS712 (talk) 15:07, 17 April 2019 (UTC)

Tagging categories
Hello, DannyS712,
While I appreciate your incredible energy and devotion to editing on Wikipedia, please do not tag categories that are part of CfD nominations or proposed for speedy mergers or renames for speedy deletion. Even if the categories are empty. Once a page is part of a deletion discussion or rename proposal, it should not be speedied. At least that is how it works with categorization. Thanks! Liz Read! Talk! 04:17, 18 April 2019 (UTC)
- @Liz: okay. Sorry, I know that AfD and MfD aren't barriers to speedy deletion, and I figured that if the category was empty for a week, it wouldn't matter. I'll avoid doing that in the future. Sorry. Thanks for the reverts --DannyS712 (talk) 05:39, 18 April 2019 (UTC)
- No problem. It can be confusing to have multiple tags on a page. And I have seen AfDs where editors complained that an article should just have been speedied. But it doesn't hurt to have a longer discussion on a questionable article or category. At least with CSD C1, there is a week where we can iron out or fix any mistagged categories or other mistakes. And it happens. Regularly. Categories that are empty one day, can have contents a couple of days after they've been tagged as empty. I'm happy to untag them and see them being used. Liz Read! Talk! 03:38, 19 April 2019 (UTC)

About your CloseRM script.
Hello there Danny, I am writing to you to say your CloseRM script is not working (for me at least), as after I enter the rationale, it throws me out of the editing thing, and makes no changes. I'm using Windows 10, on Google Chrome. Can you please tell me how to get it working? Closing RM discussions manually is slow, and inconvenient. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. The Duke 15:48, 20 April 2019 (UTC)
- @The Duke of Nonsense: are you using the old (2006) editor? From the screenshot it appears that that is the intended editor to use it with. Either way, can you hit
F12
and copy any errors the next time this happens? Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 17:41, 20 April 2019 (UTC) - The Duke of Nonsense, it (obviously) does not work with 2017 VE Text editor, though some re-basing can let it work. (TO-DO)
- I have also seen that it does not work with Wiki-Ed installed but I don't have much idea about WikiEd and have no clue, as to the solution. ∯WBGconverse 06:43, 24 April 2019 (UTC)
- @Winged Blades of Godric: I don't either, but thanks for letting me know. As for the VE Text editor, I can look into it - I have a few ideas, but nothing actionable yet. --DannyS712 (talk) 14:27, 24 April 2019 (UTC)

The article List of Rokdim Im Kokhavim participants has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
There is nothing more comprehensive about this list than the season-by-season listing list already at Rokdim_Im_Kokhavim#Participants, and if more details about contestants are desired/warranted, there's no benefit to a conglomerate list over including details of a season's contestants at individual season articles.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. ~Hydronium~Hydroxide~(Talk)~ 05:57, 21 April 2019 (UTC)
- @Hydronium Hydroxide: I created the list as the result of Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2018 April 30#Category:Dancing with the Stars participants. I have no objection if you want to redirect it to the participants section. --DannyS712 (talk) 06:00, 21 April 2019 (UTC)

No dude, this is just dumbly but/and very unintentionally hypocritical
Why in the world, you converted just a page, that I don't given a damn for the next Quebec election, which I was led someone doing it overtime, into a stupidly pathetic draft page that I clearly don't want, while there another one who been made three days go on next Alberta election gets Scott-free. And because of that, I'm undoing it because your reason isn't enough just because has less thousand of words. Like come on, I was planned on turning my laptop off until this. Chad The Goatman (talk) 08:59, 21 April 2019 (UTC)
- @Chad The Goatman: If I had seen that other page, I would have moved it to a draft too, but I don't want to move-war, so I'll leave both of them. My reason wasn't that there is less than a thousand words, but that, as the article says,
it must be held on October 3, 2022
, which is more than 3 years from now. See Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not#Wikipedia is not a crystal ball and Wikipedia:Other stuff exists. However, as I said at the start, I won't move either of them. I'm sorry, --DannyS712 (talk) 09:04, 21 April 2019 (UTC)- Okay then, and I was sorry to undoing it, but please warned the User:Steve Smith too about creating a future election page next time. Chad The Goatman (talk) 09:08, 21 April 2019 (UTC)
- @Chad The Goatman: if I come across a page like this in the future I might, but for now I'm going to take a pause from moving pages to drafts, just to make sure I don't get into any more heated discussions --DannyS712 (talk) 09:10, 21 April 2019 (UTC)
- Okay, I won't get mad if someone else like you of when I make a new page in the near future, which is seemly a drafted in progress with the lack of sources of backing it up. Chad The Goatman (talk) 09:12, 21 April 2019 (UTC)

Categories & CfDs
Hello, DannyS712,
Going through Wikipedia:Database reports/Empty categories tonight, I've come across 10-12 categories that still have CfD tags on them from discussions you closed on April 20th. What is the next step you take when you close a discussion as a NAC? How are you sure that your requests for closure (merger or deletion) are followed through on? Because it looks like these categories should have the CfD tags removed and they should be marked for deletion. Liz Read! Talk! 03:23, 23 April 2019 (UTC)
- @Liz: Since WP:CFDW is protected, I post at WT:CFDW and an admin (Ymblanter) graciously cross-posts - at that point, its all in the hands of the bot and the admins who edit the protected page. On a different note, I've noticed recently that, after I tag a portal category for speedy deletion since the portal was deleted (and the categorization relies on the portal), you replace it with a C1 tag - why? See:
- Category:Cultural Heritage of Serbia portal - Portal:Cultural Heritage of Serbia
- Category:Patna portal - Portal:Patna
- Category:Mitt Romney portal - Portal:Mitt Romney
- Category:Transylvania portal - Portal:Transylvania
- Category:Lego portal - Portal:Lego
- Category:Hip hop portal - Portal:Hip hop
- Category:Stamford portal - Portal:Stamford
- Category:24 portal - Portal:24
- Category:Men's rights portal - Portal:Men's rights
- Category:Glee portal - Portal:Glee
- Category:Webcomics portal - Portal:Webcomics
Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 03:36, 23 April 2019 (UTC)

Adopting another user script
I was looking at some of old links for Flooded with them hundreds, and I noticed you'd adopted some of their scripts after I looked at your scripts subpage (which is currently outdated, you might want to update the links there).
Anyway, I noticed one of Flooded's old scripts VisualEditist is linked rather prominently in the lead of Wikipedia:VisualEditor. I'm not sure how important the script is, but I do notice one editor currently has the script imported, so it might be worth REFUNDing and preserving. If not, the link it should be removed from the lead of Wikipedia:VisualEditor. eπi (talk | contribs) 00:14, 25 April 2019 (UTC)

Leaving junk text where links used to be
Please review edits such as this that just leave text in the middle of navigation. This is not how you should be unlinking deleted content. ―Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 04:29, 26 April 2019 (UTC)
- @Koavf: sorry, I misunderstood the new option in Xunlink. I'm fixing those now, and will read up on the documentation. --DannyS712 (talk) 04:30, 26 April 2019 (UTC)

- @Koavf: I think I got them all, thanks for the note and the follow up. It seems that Xunlink edits to portal pages don't go well - maybe they should be avoided? On a different note, I kept conflicted with you on AWB - I would preparse a group, and then when I went through you had already edited most. 2 things I want to share: the find and replace regex I used,
({{Portal[^{}]*)\|Hip hop([^{}]*}}\n)
->$1$2
. Second, do you think that a bot to remove the simple transclusions, eg{{Portal|Hip hop}}
would be a good idea? --DannyS712 (talk) 04:39, 26 April 2019 (UTC)- Thank you! I always forget regex syntax--thanks for the reminder on how it works. AFD
Hi, I might be missing it but can you please point me to the policy which states that a bundled AFD must have each article tagged with the notice? Thanks! Praxidicae (talk) 21:48, 28 April 2019 (UTC)
- @Praxidicae: See WP:MULTIAFD -
On each of the remaining articles, at the top insert the following...
(bolding added). All articles that are being considered for deletion need to be tagged as such. Otherwise, I could open a random AfD that bundles a CSD-worthy advertisement and an article like Carbon without tagging it, and then it could be deleted based on that AfD (I'm sure this bundle was made in good faith, but it still needs to be tagged). Hope this clears it up, --DannyS712 (talk) 21:53, 28 April 2019 (UTC)- That's not a policy but G6 absolutely applied here and as such has been deleted. There's no need for us to be pedantic about the deletion rationale on something that had a clear consensus. Praxidicae (talk) 21:56, 28 April 2019 (UTC)
- @Praxidicae: well, Primefac just deleted the page and I've asked them to restore it. I do not believe that it is pedantic to insist that articles can't be deleted without an AfD that they were tagged with. --DannyS712 (talk) 21:58, 28 April 2019 (UTC)
- There was a clear consensus to delete it and no reason to restore it - I assume you'll take responsibility for appropriately sourcing it then? Praxidicae (talk) 21:59, 28 April 2019 (UTC)
- @Praxidicae: I didn't participate in the AFD, but if I can have a draft copy restored I'd be happy to look for sources --DannyS712 (talk) 22:00, 28 April 2019 (UTC)
- If it's restored (and I'm ambivalent about that) it'll need at the very least a procedural AfD which can take into account the consensus at the existing multi AfD. Nick (talk) 22:02, 28 April 2019 (UTC)

Can you fix this pls?
For this userscript, it writes an edit summary for you (that is almost always unhelpful imo but whatevs) when you tag a redirect. However, if you make a redirect out of a page that was previously a redlink, you get to check the source code once before you make the edit. Could you please edit the above script to make this the case for all redirects you edit with? It's just for my own person use. –MJL ‐Talk‐☖ 23:58, 28 April 2019 (UTC)
- @MJL: I'll take a look, but personally I use User:DannyS712/Redirectify.js --DannyS712 (talk) 00:02, 29 April 2019 (UTC)

Thomas R. Russell
Hi @DannyS712, I just saw your message about the speedy deletion tag on the article I created about Thomas R. Russell. I'm fairly new to Wikipedia and this is the first time I've received the notice before, having created 11 pages. Apologies for the possible infringement, as that was never my intention! Would it possible to be more specific as to which section or element of the article the software flagged, so I could do a better job editing the information from the secondary source to ensure it has no copyright issues but is still a verifiable statement? Sorry again for the trouble!
Thank you so much

Thank you for linking it, it appears as though the majority of the issues come from listing names of people/programs he created or led during his career, not that full statements or sentences were copied over directly. Is there anything you recommended doing - like linking to other verifiable references, or taking out mention of those things entirely? Not really sure what to do in this situation, as that article was a hive of information! - thank you again for the help :) EMT STL (talk) 01:06, 29 April 2019 (UTC) @EMT_STL
- I would try to just phrase things differently - after reading through the source, and without looking at it, then try to write the section for the article. Of course, confirm that the source backs up what you wrote, but don't looking at the sources while you write, or you'll tend to use similar language. --DannyS712 (talk) 01:09, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you so much for your help! Will do so EMT STL (talk) 01:15, 29 April 2019 (UTC) @EMT_STL

Turan Hunters
Yes, I know very well that are reliable sources, but is hard to find sources on English. -- Bojan Talk 01:34, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
- @BokicaK: I'm sorry, I understand your challenged. Maybe try looking at the sources for the article in other languages' wikipedias? --DannyS712 (talk) 01:35, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
This is the first article on whole wikipedia. There aren't (m)any English sources on Google books. There are Hungarian soruces, but Hungarian is not my native langue. I have a book in Serbian that from time to time mentions actions of this organisation in occupied Bačka. These is quote from 1939 book/survey/article: Even the chauvinist Turáni Vadászok (Turanian hunters) were suppressed, since they had been staunchly anti-German as well as anti-everything else. The Gestapo arrested all those well known for their dislike of Hungary's association with ...[7]. I cant get broader context (who, what, when, where, why), but i hope this satisfies laymen that this confirms that the organisation existed? -- Bojan Talk 01:47, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
- @BokicaK: it probably exists, based on that quote, but to have an article it also needs to meet the general notability guidelines. --DannyS712 (talk) 01:48, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
Look, it participated in Šajkaška and Novi Sad raid, it persecuted Serbs, Jews and Romani people, killed, looted, their property. Membership in the organisation was enough for partisans (and probably Soviets) to execute them without any/much trial. Is it now notable? But I did't write in article yet, because I know it will be challenged. I just wrote basic facts, that anybody with elementary knowledge won't challenge. -- Bojan Talk 02:02, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
- @BokicaK: I'm sorry, I don't know enough about the topic to evaluate that. But, those details can be added to the draft, which can then be submitted for review. --DannyS712 (talk) 02:03, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
It is not your fault. Tt wasn't big and notorious as SS, but existed. I will add reference on my native language. Bojan Talk 02:06, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
Is it OK now? I can't do better. -- Bojan Talk 02:53, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
- @BokicaK: I prefer not to review drafts that I moved from mainspace, since to me it feels a bit like a COI. But, I have submitted the draft, so it should get reviewed by someone else soon. --DannyS712 (talk) 02:56, 29 April 2019 (UTC)

Recent changes
- The Wikipedia app for Android now invites users to add Wikidata descriptions to Wikidata objects that have Wikipedia articles but no Wikidata descriptions. It will only invite users who have added a number of Wikidata descriptions in the app without being reverted. This is to avoid spam and bad edits. [8][9]
Problems
- Tech News was late last week because of a MassMessage bug. Other newsletters had the same problem. [10]
Changes later this week
- You will see when you last refreshed the recent changes page. This is so you can see how recent the changes are. [11]
- When you write a comment in Structured Discussions but have not posted it yet your web browser will save it in

instead ofsession storage
. This means you do not lose them even if you close your web browser. Structured Discussions used to be called Flow. [12] - You will be able to turn off milestone notifications. Milestone notifications congratulate you when you have made certain numbers of edits. [13]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 30 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 1 May. It will be on all wikis from 2 May (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 1 May at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- The Wikidata
wb_terms
table will be dropped. This will affect some Wikidata tools. They need to be updated. The table has become too big which is causing problems. This will happen on 29 May. You can read more. You can ask for help if you need it. - Wikimedia wikis will soon use a token when you log out. This changes how the API works. Some tools might need to be updated. [14]

Talk of cloud computing draws a veil over hardware, but also, less obviously but more importantly, obscures such intellectual distinction as matters most in its use. Wikidata begins to allow tasks to be undertaken that were out of easy reach. The facility should not be taken as the real point. Coming in from another angle, the "executive decision" is more glamorous; but the "administrative decision" should be admired for its command of facts. Think of the attitudes ad fontes, so prevalent here on Wikipedia as "can you give me a source for that?", and being prepared to deal with complicated analyses into specified subcases. Impatience expressed as a disdain for such pedantry is quite understandable, but neither dirty data nor false dichotomies are at all good to have around. Issue 13 and Issue 21, respectively on WP:MEDRS and systematic reviews, talk about biomedical literature and computing tasks that would be of higher quality if they could be made more "administrative". For example, it is desirable that the decisions involved be consistent, explicable, and reproducible by non-experts from specified inputs. What gets clouded out is not impossibly hard to understand. You do need to put together the insights of functional programming, which is a doctrinaire and purist but clearcut approach, with the practicality of office software. Loopless computation can be conceived of as a seamless forward march of spreadsheet columns, each determined by the content of previous ones. Very well: to do a backward audit, when now we are talking about Wikidata, we rely on integrity of data and its scrupulous sourcing: and clearcut case analyses. The MEDRS example forces attention on purge attempts such as Beall's list.

Spelling in your script
A small point, but in your script at User:DannyS712/common.js you use the word "develope"; I think you mean "develop"? --David Biddulph (talk) 09:30, 1 May 2019 (UTC)

Pending userbox request
Hi Danny, funny that I should find you on the bureaucrats' noticeboard like that. I was just talking to DrMel; She and I have set up a proposed WikiBlind user-group for teaching blind people how to edit Wikipedia, and we were talking about creating a userbox for it. I told her that you were the only very active Wikipedian I knew of on the list of users who make userboxes upon request. I'll let DrMel let you know what she had in mind when she can, but that coincidence was too good not to mention! Graham87 11:29, 1 May 2019 (UTC)
- @Graham87: lol. I was wondering though - isn't it Xaosflux's "job" to always handle those? --DannyS712 (talk) 15:35, 1 May 2019 (UTC)
- Well he normally does, but we're all volunteers, so it's all good. Graham87 05:44, 2 May 2019 (UTC)

WikiCup 2019 May newsletter
The second round of the 2019 WikiCup has now finished. Contestants needed to scored 32 points to advance into round 3. Our top four scorers in round 2 all scored over 400 points and were:
- Cas Liber (1210), our winner in 2016, with two featured articles and three DYKs. He also made good use of the bonus points available, more than doubling his score by choosing appropriate articles to work on.
- Kosack (750), last year's runner up, with an FA, a GA, two FLs, and five DYKs.
- Adam Cuerden (480), a WikiCup veteran, with 16 featured pictures, mostly restorations.
- Zwerg Nase (461), a seasoned competitor, with a FA, a GA and an ITN item.
Other notable performances were put in by Barkeep49 with six GAs, Ceranthor, Lee Vilenski, and Canada Hky, each with seven GARs, and MPJ-DK with a seven item GT.
So far contestants have achieved nine featured articles between them and a splendid 80 good articles. Commendably, 227 GARs have been completed during the course of the 2019 WikiCup, so the backlog of articles awaiting GA review has been reduced as a result of contestants' activities. The judges are pleased with the thorough GARs that are being performed, and have hardly had to reject any. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.
If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Userbox request for WikiBlind
Hi Danny! Graham87 encouraged me to get in touch to get your help with the userboxes we want our new wikiblind volunteers to be able to include on their user pages. I did a mock-up on my art program here and just uploaded it to commons. Here’s the link: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Proposed_layout_for_1st_wikiBlind_user_group_userbox.jpg
Can you tell me how easy it would be to create the userbox? We want to welcome our newbies with this on their user page as soon as we get them setup and ready to participate for the first time. We are very excited to see so much enthusiasm so quickly! We would love to include everyone in the fun, too - experienced wikipedians are a huge part of what happens next! Come join us? https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiBlind_Wikimedians_User_Group
- @DrMel: sure. I'm making it now --DannyS712 (talk) 00:00, 2 May 2019 (UTC)
- @DannyS712: thank you! Here’s the logo art by itself: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiBlind_Wikimedians_User_Group DrMel (talk) 00:07, 2 May 2019 (UTC)
- @DrMel: I've created Template:User WikiBlind founder. Let me know if there is anything more I can help with - I couldn't make it wider, but I'll try to figure out how to add a width parameter to help at some point. --DannyS712 (talk) 00:11, 2 May 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you! Could you change the font size so the logo fills the height on the left side? And or shorten the text back to just say “Founding Member of wikiBlind” ? DrMel (talk) 02:00, 2 May 2019 (UTC)
- @DrMel: The logo does fill the height on the left side... --DannyS712 (talk) 02:01, 2 May 2019 (UTC)
- @DrMel: Cool, thanks muchly! Shouldn't we have a general one for non-founders as well? Graham87 05:46, 2 May 2019 (UTC)
- @Graham87: You mean like Template:User WikiBlind? --DannyS712 (talk) 05:53, 2 May 2019 (UTC)
- Yep, that's it, thanks! I'm not aware of any other project that has a distinct userbox for its members and founding members like that ... and having such a prominent distinction reminds me in a very bad way of what happened to the Esperanza group. I won't take any further action until I get a response from Mel though. Whatever happens, I'll be sure to preserve history, as I do. :-) Graham87 06:06, 2 May 2019 (UTC)
- @Graham87: if you don't want the "founding" part, merging the histories should be literally the easiest hist merge ever. The non-founder version was just me pasting in the founder version and removing the word "founder" before saving it the first time, so other than my edit summary nothing would even appear amiss if you merged the two. I'll let you decide though, --DannyS712 (talk) 06:09, 2 May 2019 (UTC)

Wikipedia:WikiProject Portals update #031, 01 May 2019
Back to the drawing board
Implementation of the new portal design has been culled back almost completely, and the cull is still ongoing. The cull has also affected portals that existed before the development of the automated design.
Some of the reasons for the purge are:
- Portals receive insufficient traffic, making it a waste of editor resources to maintain them, especially for narrow-scope or "micro" portals
- The default {{bpsp}} portals are redundant with the corresponding articles, being based primarily on the corresponding navigation footer displayed on each of those articles, and therefore not worth separate pages to do so
- They were mass created
Most of the deletions have been made without prejudice to recreation of curated portals, so that approval does not need to be sought at Deletion Review in those cases.
In addition to new portals being deleted, most of the portals that were converted to an automated design have been reverted.
Which puts us back to portals with manually selected content, that need to be maintained by hand, for the most part, for the time being, and back facing some of the same problems we had when we were at this crossroads before:
- Manually maintained portals are not scalable (they are labor intensive, and there aren't very many editors available to maintain them)
- The builders/maintainers tend to eventually abandon them
- Untended handcrafted portals go stale and fall into disrepair over time
These and other concepts require further discussion. See you at WT:POG.
However, after the purge/reversion is completed, some of the single-page portals might be left, due to having acceptable characteristics (their design varied some). If so, then those could possibly be used as a model to convert and/or build more, after the discussions on portal creation and design guidelines have reached a community consensus on what is and is not acceptable for a portal.
See you at WT:POG.
Curation
A major theme in the deletion discussions was the need for portals to be curated, that is, each one having a dedicated maintainer.
There are currently around 100 curated portals. Based on the predominant reasoning at MfD, it seems likely that all the other portals may be subject to deletion.
See you at WT:POG.
Traffic
An observation and argument that arose again and again during the WP:ENDPORTALS RfC and the ongoing deletion drive of {{bpsp}} default portals, was that portals simply do not get much traffic. Typically, they get a tiny fraction of what the corresponding like-titled articles get.
And while this isn't generally considered a good rationale for creation or deletion of articles, portals are not articles, and portal critics insist that traffic is a key factor in the utility of portals.
The implication is that portals won't be seen much, so wouldn't it be better to develop pages that are?
And since such development isn't limited to editing, almost anything is possible. If we can't bring readers to portals, we could bring portal features, or even better features, to the readers (i.e., to articles)...
Some potential future directions of development
Quantum portals?
An approach that has received some brainstorming is "quantum portals", meaning portals generated on-the-fly and presented directly on the view screen without any saved portal pages. This could be done by script or as a MediaWiki program feature, but would initially be done by script. The main benefits of this is that it would be opt-in (only those who wanted it would install it), and the resultant generated pages wouldn't be saved, so that there wouldn't be anything to maintain except the script itself.
Non-portal integrated components
Another approach would be to focus on implementing specific features independently, and provide them somewhere highly visible in a non-portal presentation context (that is, on a page that wasn't a portal that has lots of traffic, i.e., articles). Such as inserted directly into an article's HTML, as a pop-up there, or as a temporary page. There are scripts that use these approaches (providing unrelated features), and so these approaches have been proven to be feasible.
What kind of features could this be done with?
The various components of the automated portal design are transcluded excerpts, news, did you know, image slideshows, excerpt slideshows, and so on.
Some of the features, such as navigation footers and links to sister projects are already included on article pages. And some already have interface counterparts (such as image slideshows). Some of the rest may be able to be integrated directly via script, but may need further development before they are perfected. Fortunately, scripts are used on an opt-in basis, and therefore wouldn't affect readers-in-general and editors-at-large during the development process (except for those who wanted to be beta testers and installed the scripts).
The development of such scripts falls under the scope of the Javascript-WikiProject/Userscript-department, and will likely be listed on Wikipedia:User scripts/List when completed enough for beta-testing. Be sure to watchlist that page.
Where would that leave curated portals?
Being curated. At least for the time being.
New encyclopedia program features will likely eventually render most portals obsolete. For example, the pop-up feature of MediaWiki provides much the same functionality as excerpts in portals already, and there is also a slideshow feature to view all the images on the current page (just click on any image, and that activates the slideshow). Future features could also overlap portal features, until there is nothing that portals provide that isn't provided elsewhere or as part of Wikipedia's interface.
But, that may be a ways off. Perhaps months or years. It depends on how rapidly programmers develop them.
Keep on keepin' on
The features of Wikipedia and its articles will continue to evolve, even if Portals go by the wayside. Most, if not all of portals' functionality, or functions very similar, will likely be made available in some form or other.
And who knows what else?
No worries.

The recent mass-message ...
Not only is it missing a small tag, but it's also missing a timestamp, which (a) is just really bad for timekeeping purposes and (b) means that lowercase sigmabot III will never archive the message. Is there any chance you could add the timestamps semi-automagically, as well? I've done it on my end. Thanks! Graham87 01:43, 4 May 2019 (UTC)
- @Graham87: I certainly can, but I don't know if I should - that is a bit more cosmetic than the tags. Also, when sending a mass message without a timestamp a warning is shown - @Cameron11598: did you see the warning/is there a reason not to add timestamps? --DannyS712 (talk) 01:45, 4 May 2019 (UTC)
- I was not prompted with a warning for a time stamp so I had assumed it was included in the templates code otherwise I would have included the hidden time stamp. I was instructed on the Clerks mailing list to send the message for the committee. I apologize for not checking the template closer before sending the message. I'll make sure to do so in the future. --Cameron11598 (Talk) 01:48, 4 May 2019 (UTC)
- @Cameron11598: no problem. There was also a

tag that was unclosed, but I've already gone and fixed that. Do you want the timestamp to be now (~~~~~
) or when it was sent? --DannyS712 (talk) 01:50, 4 May 2019 (UTC) - Also pinging Oshwah who pointed out the original issue with the tag - do you think its okay to do another run? --DannyS712 (talk) 01:51, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

- @Cameron11598: Is the location that Graham87 put the timestamp good? --DannyS712 (talk) 01:53, 4 May 2019 (UTC)
- That location is fine by me. --Cameron11598 (Talk) 01:59, 4 May 2019 (UTC)
- Cameron11598, since this is an official ArbCom message, I think the timestamps should match the time that the message was originally sent. Nothing may come of it, but we shouldn't leave room for error, and having different timestamps could do this. Again, it's your call, but that's what I would choose if it were up to me. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:01, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

- (edit conflict) Yeah... since this is an official ArbCom message, we should add a timestamp to the message for completeness. Else, I'd say that that a second mass fix by a bot would probably annoy a lot of admins. Unfortunately, we don't have a choice in this case. Why do the drafts matter?
Hi Danny, I understand the A-League 2019/20 season pages, don't have a lot of citations, but this happens all the time and the pages are not moved to drafts. There are a lot of pages like that with only about two/three references in the articles.
I created 2018–19 Central Coast Mariners FC season on April 2018, no-one moved it to a draft if there is not a lot of citations. Even 2019–20 Arsenal F.C. season has like two references and it's not moved to a draft. There is enough information to be shown into these articles.
FastCube (talk) 04:58, 4 May 2019 (UTC)FastCube
- @FastCube: Because the pages are mostly empty, likely due to the fact that the seasons haven't started yet. Though they likely will be notable, until there is enough coverage by reliable sources about them, they should be incubating in draft space. --DannyS712 (talk) 05:00, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

- A request for comment concluded that creating pages in the portal namespace should be restricted to autoconfirmed users.
- Following a request for comment, the subject-specific notability guideline for pornographic actors and models (WP:PORNBIO) was removed; in its place, editors should consult WP:ENT and WP:GNG.
- XTools Admin Stats, a tool to list admins by administrative actions, has been revamped to support more types of log entries such as AbuseFilter changes. Two additional tools have been integrated into it as well: Steward Stats and Patroller Stats.
- In response to the continuing compromise of administrator accounts, the Arbitration Committee passed a motion amending the procedures for return of permissions (diff). In such cases,
the committee will review all available information to determine whether the administrator followed "appropriate personal security practices" before restoring permissions
; administrators found failing to have adequately done sowill not be resysopped automatically
. All current administrators have been notified of this change. - Following a formal ratification process, the arbitration policy has been amended (diff). Specifically, the two-thirds majority required to remove or suspend an arbitrator now excludes (1) the arbitrator facing suspension or removal, and (2) any inactive arbitrator who does not respond within 30 days to attempts to solicit their feedback on the resolution through all known methods of communication.

2019 West Berkshire Council election returned to mainspace
Many thanks for the note on my talk page. I was not aware of this draftspace thing - I largely gnome my way around wikipedia these days looking for things to fix, and pay little, if any, attention to the procuedures that others create to govern it. I still maintain an interest in elections and occasionally have the joy of creating new articles about them when I discover nobody else has. I have ample experience of editing, some might consider me an experienced editor, but I'll leave that distinction to dis-interested observers. I have modified the page as requested with references for all the content, which I was planning to get around to - if I had been aware of a need to create it in another space before adding references, I would have done so and will know for next time. When I pressed the godly "Submit your draft for review" button I was informed it could take two months, which is not fast enough if we're being entirely honest, so I decided to Ignore All Rules (the only wikipedia rule I can remember in its entirity!) and just return it to the mainspace. If I've broken one of the many rules that govern me doing so on basis of a COI, just remember I'm ignoring them, but felt it was polite that I let you know. --New Progressive (talk) 14:32, 6 May 2019 (UTC)
- @Newprogressive: thanks for the note! I know that AfC has a backlog, but if you ever want me to review a draft of your I promise it'll take less than 2 months. --DannyS712 (talk) 19:33, 6 May 2019 (UTC)

Lars Edegran
I saw you revert my edit on Lars Edegran. Here are some points to keep in mind. I was cleaning out categories, and "dixieland guitarists" had only four entries. I'm not a big fan of categories. There are usually too many, creating clutter. For me, it's enough to know he's a jazz musician from Switzerland. Edegran does appear in the List of jazz guitarists. I don't like to debate divisions of genres. The term jazz is OK with me and debatable enough for most people. Nevertheless, "dixieland" is a term that isn't used much anymore, and its use was always debatable, bumping elbows with New Orleans jazz and maybe a couple other terms. What is Edegran's main instrument? I know he plays several. In his article picture, he is playing piano. I wish people applied categories in a way that is representative. Michael Jordan is known as a basketball player, but he also plays golf. See what I mean? If we include everything a person has ever done, we encourage on every article a long list of categories that makes the eyes glaze over. Too much information is very much a problem.
Vmavanti (talk) 18:55, 7 May 2019 (UTC)
- @Vmavanti: I understand, but I added that category specifically because it was empty and would have been deleted otherwise - if you think that a category should be deleted, see WP:CFD. --DannyS712 (talk) 19:06, 7 May 2019 (UTC)
- Yes, I do. Don't "save" categories. They're not people. They don't need saving. There's a lot of that on Wikipedia. It's digital information on a screen. That's all. Any real editor in the real world will tell you that the delete key is the most important tool of the job, not the enemy.
Vmavanti (talk) 20:14, 7 May 2019 (UTC)- @Vmavanti: I thought it was a useful category - they don't need "saving," but it needed to be populated. Sorry that we disagree on this, and I'll agree not to try to fill the category. --DannyS712 (talk) 21:11, 7 May 2019 (UTC)
- Well, your intention is good, but as I said, "dixieland" is a term that is used rarely. That may explain why the category is sparsely populated. Wikipedia has been around many years, and I doubt there will be a large increase in the number of people who use the term. Very likely the number will drop further, though I'm not saying it can't or shouldn't be used. If help is needed in categories, it's in their reduction and in the attempt to teach IP editors to avoid adding fifty categories to every article.
Vmavanti (talk) 00:06, 8 May 2019 (UTC)- @Vmavanti: Again, point taken --DannyS712 (talk) 00:08, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

CheckUser question
Hello DannyS712!
Can I check any user's IP with Quick_CheckUser_requests, or is there a requirement? Maybe some documentation?
Thank you! — Aron Manning (talk) 04:44, 13 May 2019 (UTC)
- @Aron Manning: what information are you trying to get? --DannyS712 (talk) 04:45, 13 May 2019 (UTC)
@DannyS712: There's a disruptive editor hiding behind 2 dynamic ip WP:SPASOCKs. I wish to find out which one out of about 3. — Aron Manning (talk) 05:31, 13 May 2019 (UTC)
- @Aron Manning: in that case, quick requests is not the right location - you should probably file a full SPI report. But, you won't find out the IPs, since they are private - at most the editor will get blocked. --DannyS712 (talk) 05:35, 13 May 2019 (UTC)
- Should I list the possible users, or you find it based on ip range without that? Dynamic ip4, isp's ip range is known from iplocation. Should be one of a few users involved with an article. — Aron Manning (talk) 05:39, 13 May 2019 (UTC)
- @Aron Manning: see the explanation about when to file, and how to file, a report at WP:SPI (under "Before opening an investigation, you need good reason to suspect sock puppetry.") --DannyS712 (talk) 05:41, 13 May 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks, I have read that, but did not find answer to my question. Should I ask in Teahouse? — Aron Manning (talk) 06:38, 13 May 2019 (UTC)

Deletion of my sandbox
I received this message on my talk page from you: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Ghostofnemo#Speedy_deletion_nomination_of_Template:Ghostofnemo_sandbox
When I try to click the "visiting the page" link to see what this is about, it says the page has already been deleted. I have no idea what was on that page or why it was deleted. Can you clue me in? Thank you. Ghostofnemo (talk) 05:00, 14 May 2019 (UTC)
- @Ghostofnemo: I tagged it for deletion because individual users shouldn't have sandboxes in the template namespace, so I assumed you had just made a mistake, but you already have your own personal sandbox, which wasn't deleted. --DannyS712 (talk) 05:01, 14 May 2019 (UTC)
- Strange thing is that the letters of my "Sandbox" tab were red so I had to create a new Sandbox, so maybe I goofed up. Is there any way to find out what happened to my original Sandbox page? Ghostofnemo (talk) 05:05, 14 May 2019 (UTC)
- @Ghostofnemo: what do you mean - your sandbox is at User:Ghostofnemo/sandbox? I noticed that in the last edit you made to it, you blanked the contents - I have undone that edit, if that is the contents you are looking for --DannyS712 (talk) 05:06, 14 May 2019 (UTC)
- No, I was me that blanked it after I made the article live, but if you look at the history of that sandbox page you'll see it was newly created. Seems like I used to have a Sandbox page but that it was deleted, so I had to create a new one (which I apparently did wrong). Ghostofnemo (talk) 05:09, 14 May 2019 (UTC)
- @Ghostofnemo: Im afraid I don't understand what you are asking - is there anything I can do? I'm not an admin, so I can't see the contents of the deleted page. --DannyS712 (talk) 05:11, 14 May 2019 (UTC)

2019 Dacorum Borough Council election
Danny, this draft should be accepted. All of the information within it is sourced, and election results are almost always notable. It can be further improved and expanded in mainspace. – bradv🍁 20:51, 14 May 2019 (UTC)
- While its sourced, its currently primarily just data, which fails Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not#Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information:
To provide encyclopedic value, data should be put in context with explanations referenced to independent sources.
Looking at the context, there isn't enough to move it to mainspace (imo) - if you feel strongly about this, I don't object if you move it yourself. --DannyS712 (talk) 20:54, 14 May 2019 (UTC)- Done. I agree it would be nice if the article had some additional context from news articles, but that is in no way required by the AfC process. – bradv🍁 21:05, 14 May 2019 (UTC)

Please comment on Talk:People's Mujahedin of Iran

That happened quietly.
I just hovered over your username and noticed a welcome change, but your talk page is missing this...
Your account has been granted the "templateeditor" user permission, allowing you to edit templates and modules that have been protected with template protection. It also allows you to bypass the title blacklist, giving you the ability to create and edit editnotices. Before you use this user right, please read Wikipedia:Template editor and make sure you understand its contents. In particular, you should read the section on wise template editing and the criteria for revocation.
You can use this user right to perform maintenance, answer edit requests, and make any other simple and generally uncontroversial edits to templates, modules, and edinotices. You can also use it to enact more complex or controversial edits, after those edits are first made to a test sandbox, and their technical reliability as well as their consensus among other informed editors has been established. If you are willing to process edit requests on templates and modules, keep in mind that you are taking responsibility to ensure the edits have consensus and are technically sound.
This user right gives you access to some of Wikipedia's most important templates and modules; it is critical that you edit them wisely and that you only make edits that are backed up by consensus. It is also very important that no one else be allowed to access your account, so you should consider taking a few moments to secure your password.
If you do not want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time.
If you were granted the permission on a temporary basis you will need to re-apply for the permission a few days before it expires including in your request a permalink to the discussion where it was granted and a {{ping}} for the administrator who granted the permission. You can find the permalink in your rights log.

Happy template editing! Cabayi (talk) 06:34, 16 May 2019 (UTC)
- @Cabayi: Thanks - it did happen quickly, I didn't even file a request: Primefac just gave it to me yesterday with the summary
temporary TPE - while there were some reservations initially, this will give them an opportunity to demonstrate that those reservations were unnecessary
. Since then, I've been cautious - my template-protected edits so far have been [21], [22], and [23] (more complicated, but see Template:DRV links/sandbox and Template:DRV links/testcases. Thanks for noticing, and for thetemplate messageadvice. The title blacklist part isn't needed though - I'm a page mover... the one thing I didn't enjoy about this process was needing to make a new password - mine wasn't long enough. Anyway, thanks for the welcome. Another useful link for you: a list of indefinitely template protected pages (excluding redirects). Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 06:47, 16 May 2019 (UTC)- Also, if you ever have any advice or feedback, don't hesitate to let me know --DannyS712 (talk) 06:48, 16 May 2019 (UTC)
Subcategories script
Thanks for producing User:DannyS712/Subcategories.js which looks very useful. I'm having difficulty using it: it appears to do nothing. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Where exactly should I look for a new "Sub category" button? I've tried installing both manually and automatically. Logging shows https: GETs on both the enwiki wrapper script and the core code from Meta, so I think it's loading ok. I've visited several categories I'd never looked at before, and done full reloads just in case. I do have an ad blocker but turned it off for this exercise, and I have WP and Meta whitelisted anyway. As a last resort, I even read the documentation! Any help would be welcome. Thanks, Certes (talk) 11:51, 16 May 2019 (UTC)
- @Certes: it should be under the "more" menu on the vector skin, or the corresponding area for other skins. Its the same area as the "move" button. --DannyS712 (talk) 14:57, 16 May 2019 (UTC)
- Ah, thanks, found it! Certes (talk) 15:05, 16 May 2019 (UTC)
DiscussionCloser
Please do something about the infobox at User:DannyS712/DiscussionCloser so that it lists the author as Abelmoschus Esculentus. They clearly worked hard on the script so it hardly bodes well for you to make it look as if you wrote it. (I tried adding the author field to the infobox but it didn't work of course as you're using a wrapper that doesn't support the author field.) Thanks for your understanding. SD0001 (talk) 17:57, 16 May 2019 (UTC)
- @SD0001: I simply removed the author field altogether - at the bottom I make clear which scripts I wrote and which I didn't. Is that okay? --DannyS712 (talk) 17:59, 16 May 2019 (UTC)
- That's hardly sufficient. Shall I suggest a different tack? Use
| author = {{{author|[[User:DannyS712|DannyS712]]}}}
so that it allows the author field, but defaults to yourself if not present. And then put in the author field for the scripts you didn't write. SD0001 (talk) 18:07, 16 May 2019 (UTC)- @SD0001: Sure. I'll could use
[[User:{{{author|DannyS712}}}|{{{author|DannyS712}}}]]
so that I don't need to write the link each time, but that is a much better way of doing things. But, what about scripts that I then improve? Should I add "original author" and "current maintainer" fields? --DannyS712 (talk) 18:09, 16 May 2019 (UTC)- Yes, that all sounds cool. SD0001 (talk) 18:21, 16 May 2019 (UTC)
- @SD0001: okay - I'll try to get to doing all of that soon, but it might be a little bit because I'll need to do it for lots of scripts. Thanks for pointing that out. --DannyS712 (talk) 18:22, 16 May 2019 (UTC)

Facto Post – Issue 24 – 17 May 2019
The Editor is Charles Matthews, for ContentMine. Please leave feedback for him, on his User talk page.
To subscribe to Facto Post go to Wikipedia:Facto Post mailing list. For the ways to unsubscribe, see the footer.
Two dozen issues, and this may be the last, a valediction at least for a while. It's time for a two-year summation of ContentMine projects involving TDM (text and data mining). Wikidata and now Structured Data on Commons represent the overlap of Wikimedia with the Semantic Web. This common ground is helping to convert an engineering concept into a movement. TDM generally has little enough connection with the Semantic Web, being instead in the orbit of machine learning which is no respecter of the semantic. Don't break a taboo by asking bots "and what do you mean by that?" The ScienceSource project innovates in TDM, by storing its text mining results in a Wikibase site. It strives for compliance of its fact mining, on drug treatments of diseases, with an automated form of the relevant Wikipedia referencing guideline MEDRS. Where WikiFactMine set up an API for reuse of its results, ScienceSource has a SPARQL query service, with look-and-feel exactly that of Wikidata's at query.wikidata.org. It also now has a custom front end, and its content can be federated, in other words used in data mashups: it is one of over 50 sites that can federate with Wikidata. The human factor comes to bear through the front end, which combines a link to the HTML version of a paper, text mining results organised in drug and disease columns, and a SPARQL display of nearby drug and disease terms. Much software to develop and explain, so little time! Rather than telling the tale, Facto Post brings you ScienceSource links, starting from the how-to video, lower right.
The review tool requires a log in on sciencesource.wmflabs.org, and an OAuth permission (bottom of a review page) to operate. It can be used in simple and more advanced workflows. Examples of queries for the latter are at d:Wikidata_talk:ScienceSource project/Queries#SS_disease_list and d:Wikidata_talk:ScienceSource_project/Queries#NDF-RT issue. Please be aware that this is a research project in development, and may have outages for planned maintenance. That will apply for the next few days, at least. The ScienceSource wiki main page carries information on practical matters. Email is not enabled on the wiki: use site mail here to Charles Matthews in case of difficulty, or if you need support. Further explanatory videos will be put into commons:Category:ContentMine videos. If you wish to receive no further issues of Facto Post, please remove your name from our mailing list. NPR Newsletter No.18
Hello DannyS712,
- WMF at work on NPP Improvements
Niharika Kohli, a product manager for the growth team, announced that work is underway in implementing improvements to New Page Patrol as part of the 2019 Community Wishlist and suggests all who are interested watch the project page on meta. Two requested improvements have already been completed. These are:
- Allow filtering by no citations in page curation
- Not having CSD and PRODs automatically marked as reviewed, reflecting current consensus among reviewers and current Twinkle functionality.
- Reliable Sources for NPP
Rosguill has been compiling a list of reliable sources across countries and industries that can be used by new page patrollers to help judge whether an article topic is notable or not. At this point further discussion is needed about if and how this list should be used. Please consider joining the discussion about how this potentially valuable resource should be developed and used.
- Backlog drive coming soon
Look for information on the an upcoming backlog drive in our next newsletter. If you'd like to help plan this drive, join in the discussion on the New Page Patrol talk page.
- News
- Following a request for comment, the subject-specific notability guideline for pornographic actors and models (WP:PORNBIO) was removed; in its place, editors should consult WP:ENT and WP:GNG.

DYK for United States v. Ramsey (1977)
On 18 May 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article United States v. Ramsey (1977), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that according to a US Supreme Court decision, the Fourth Amendment does not apply to searches at the border? You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, United States v.
