Convert

Would you mind avoiding {{conv}} and writing {{convert}} instead. The saving in the amount of typing is inconsequential so conv has no benefit. The downside is that it causes confusion for other editors who know what convert is (or at least, could guess), but who may not know what conv is. There are over 3.2 million {{convert}} templates in articles but hardly any {{conv}}. A complication is that {{cvt}} is a useful abbreviation for convert and cvt has an extra property, namely that it sets |abbr=on so unit symbols are shown, not names. Thanks @Discott: for adding in the background! :) I've done some minor reorganizing so that it flows better (and doesn't feel too excessively sectioned) but the background itself is great! In case you're interested in further improving the article, I'd recommend rewording and expanding the lead to fully/better cover the content in the Background, "2023 accusation...", and Inquiry findings sections. If it helps, some questions to consider that the lead should be able to answer: what was South Africa's de jure & de facto position on the Russian invasion at the time of the incident (e.g. the docking was controversial because South Africa had publicly declared its "neutrality" to the invasion so the alleged arms transfer would've violated this "neutrality")? How were Russia-South Africa relations prior to the incident (briefly mention ANC/Vekselberg)? Briefly mention other causes for US-South Africa tensions (e.g. Mosi II exercises) and some more specific domestic reactions by South African officials/journalists (briefly). Briefly mention Russian and Ukraine reactions and mention the inquiry and what it found and reactions to the findings of the inquiry. Edit summaries

Hello. I have noticed that you often perform minor edits while leaving an edit summary of mnr edit. Given that you also check the minor edit box (which leaves an m icon next to the edit summary), this is effectively the same as leaving no edit summary. While some editors—including myself (and likely you)—review changes by looking at the diff, some do so simply by reading the edit summary and likely find it annoying when the edit summary does not provide information about what or why the edit was performed (e.g. "/* Section */ changed url status to dead" or "/* Section */ url is dead", respectively). Hey @DaZyzzogetonsGotDaLastWord:, thanks for the message! About edit summaries, like you said, they're mostly to help other contributors review/give oversight to edits (although there are other reasons too ofc). I have usually used "mnr edit" and "mnr fix" for miscellaneous, quick edits that have essentially no need of review/oversight imo (some examples include removing excess whitespaces, adding in minor bits of markup/code to fix/improve previous edits, straightforward copyediting, adding in 1-2 links (if I add more, I'd usually say so), and standard content/text rearrangements (like putting stub templates on the bottom)). I also use it often when editing my user pages (which is completely legitimate per WP:USERPAGE) plus also occasionally when updating article talk page classifications/templates. That said, I've recently been adopting some more varied, specific edit summaries where it makes sense (like with copyediting, where I usually say "ce" and links additions with "+links"). Looking forward, I'll probably be limiting my use of the "mnr fix" edit summary for small, quick immediate followup corrections to previous edits given there's very little need to or practical other way of describing it (I don't think saying "added in hyphen with en-dash on Line 17" has any meaningful value over "mnr fix", for example). Hi TechnoSquirrel69! :) Thanks for the message and sorry about the mistake! I completely didn't know about the individual seven-day windows (which is completely my fault... sorry!!) so I thought since the contest submission phase would close at the end of September, it wouldn't be an issue to submit them later all at once. That said, if it helps, I'm okay with the nominations being rejected too. I would've done the FLNs regardless of the contest and still will be doing them for quiet a while so its alright with me tbh. I'll definitely make sure to be more careful in the future contests (also hopefully will get some GAs next time around). Russian occupation administrations

Hi Dantheanimator, I hope to encourage you to collect all the research you have scattered around the lists about Russian administration and collate it somewhere. The obvious place is likely Russian temporary administrative agencies in occupied Ukraine, a very poor article which has very little information about the administration, that provides far less insight than your tucked away footnotes. It's an important topic that can be tricky to cover, and the Kherson summary is well written. I have a memory of Russia also adjusting their borders for either Donestk or Luhansk by shuffling some raions around but can't find exactly what that was right now. The article could probably use something about passportisation, although that's a separate topic from local administrative boundaries.

Many thanks for the post and FLN review CMD! :) About Russian occupation administrations, I agree with consolidating the content into the article you linked though I wouldn't say its all my research. In the case of the Kherson note, I got most of that info & the sources from the Russian occupation of Kherson Oblast article, which is quiet good with its coverage imo. Some of the other Russian occupation articles also aren't too terrible with the coverage too. About the temporary agencies article you linked, I'll definitely take a shot at it after I finish my current projects (right now I've been trying to make some headway with lists for Ukraine's villages and occasionally with some other lists).

In my experience, a lot of relevant content is already on wiki but scattered across articles like you said and also among different languages. About Donetsk & Luhansk, I did a quick on-wiki search and for Luhansk I found some info here (under Административно-территориальное устройство) which might be what you're thinking of? Also recommend checking the Russian language LPR and DPR articles if you're particularly curious about those two oblasts' occupation subdivisions (Google Chrome's translate feature does a solid translation of the content imo). Content about passportization is probably better placed in Passportization for now since that article's very stub-ish tho a short bit about how local community resources/administrative structures are used to facilitate/promote passportization/Russification in the occupied territories makes sense. A lot of the issue with expanding articles about occupation administrations is the difficulty in accessing some of the sources: I remember when I worked on List of cities in Crimea, which I plan on working on more to add additional details with more footnotes, some occupation websites were only available through Wayback Machine or just not available at all (like sev.gov.ru, which based on the error message I assumed had restricted access to American IPs). Then there's also the issue of having PDF files instead of webpages, which makes it a lot tougher to translate and use the content.

Although not exactly your expertise, I think this might be something you might be interested/could help with HappyWith? I remember you working on articles about Ukrainian subdivisions and topics on occupied territories and having a lot of knowledge about post-invasion happenings so thought you might be interested (also I know it's been a long while so hope all's well :) Dan the Animator 06:58, 29 September 2024 (UTC)

No, I have a memory of some border change, perhaps a raion changing or villages moving to a new raion. I tried another round of fruitless searching, so who knows, I could be making it up. I wouldn't not put passportization information in that article, but it seems a key part of administration, mentioned in the more detailed news reports (eg).

For PDFs I highly recommend just screenshotting them and dumping those screenshots into an image to text site. I believe generative AI sites have such features built in too, although you may need a paid version to do it multiple times there. I was having a look at your Odesa nomination as well, but my comments were much the same as Kherson so I decided not to duplicate them. CMD (talk) 14:08, 29 September 2024 (UTC)

Hmm, it doesn't sound too far fetched. Maybe this is similar to the Russian occupation officials moving the capital to Henichesk where they'll say it briefly and then quickly walk back on it. In any case, hope the articles I linked were helpful. About passportization, seems you're right. Don't have an economist subscription unfortunately so didn't read the full article but the preview is great. And thanks for the suggestion! I think I'll try it out. About the Odesa nom, no worries. I'd recommend waiting until I resolve your suggestions on the Kherson nom (which I'll apply to the other lists including Odesa too) and then, if you want, you could add your support (although reviews are more helpful, its perfectably acceptable and still helpful to get a simple one-line support with no suggestions). About list of cities in Kyiv Oblast

Hello, I want to make a comment on the inclusion of Kyiv in the List of cities in Kyiv Oblast. While I see why Kyiv should be mentioned (it's the administrative centre after all), it is technically not a part of Kyiv Oblast so I think it shouldn't be on the list itself (in its current state, the page implies that Kyiv is a part of Kyiv Oblast, just not a part of any raion). This situation is not equivalent to Sevastopol in Crimea as the List of cities in Crimea lists the cities in, well, Crimea (the Crimean Peninsula - a geographic region, not an administrative division), a concept that covers the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol. Meanwhile Kyiv Oblast is exclusively an administrative division, not a geographic region like the page suggests ("the city of Kyiv... is the most populous city in the geographic area"). Hey Shwabb1, thanks for bringing this up! The Kyiv Oblast list is definitely in need of a lot of work and the lead/rest of the article is far from ready (content about Chernobyl/Pripyat/Slavutych still needs to be added/vetted and, as you brought up, lots of rewording/reworking is needed to explain the relationship between Kyiv and Kyiv Oblast). I did some relatively quick edits to the article to make it more clear (including in the table, where Kyiv stands out from the rest now) but I'll be working on it more eventually! I've been somewhat procrastinating from this list since this and the List of cities in Ukraine both are in need of a lot more background research and content generation than the other lists but I'll make sure to get around to it eventually! :) Feel free to make any rewording/additions/other edits that you think would help in the meantime tho.
