GOCE elections
Happy New Year, Dianna! Did you notice that Dank also received 18 votes, same as Sp33dyphil? I've put this message on the Utahraptor's talk page, suggesting we might solve it by coopting or suchlike. --Stfg (talk) 10:25, 1 January 2012 (UTC)
- No, I think we better go with five coordinators. I have corrected all the related pages and apologised to Dank for my mistake. --Dianna (talk) 16:17, 1 January 2012 (UTC)
Opinion
I think of myself as a writer, not an editor. But I am trying my hand again at editing. I started with Aralia spinosa I read the directions to do a word count too late, so I don't have word count for the article. My question is what do I do from here? I really need to have someone look at my work for a couple edits, to point out the kinds of items I am missing. Any help/input appreciated.Jacqke (talk) 22:29, 1 January 2012 (UTC)
- Hi, Jacqke. Thank you for your interest in helping out with the drive. You can get the starting word count by running the script on the version of the article before you started. For example, for Aralia spinosa, the starting word count was 656 words. This article was fine; there were no obvious errors. Some basic guidelines for expectations for the Drive can be found in our step-by-step guide. Please let me know when you have another article that you want me to check over. --Dianna (talk) 03:09, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
2012 GOCE coordinatorship
Hi Diannaa! I'd like to express my appreciation for your vote for me during the 2012 GOCE coordinatorship election. During the next 12 months, I will be looking forward to your input on how I can perform my role, so please be brutally honest regarding my actions.
Regards, and have a wonderful new year! --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 01:02, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

Diannaa: can you check the page style citing on the "new" footnote on Fegelein's article page. Cheers, Kierzek (talk) 23:55, 23 January 2012 (UTC)
- Hi Kierzek. Yah, everything you did is working ok. I see you had a little fun getting everything working! Tricky business! I am gonna take a minute to explain why we need to use {{harvnb}} inside the {{efn}} template, since it is not at all obvious.
What MrBee did works fine, but it is pretty old-school; in fact, the
{{#tag:ref|
system is considered to be deprecated. Another problem with the way MrBee did it, is he put the expanatory note upstairs, inside the prose. His way works, but separating the explanatory note down to the references section is better, because the edit box is cleaner, and it makes the article easier to edit. However, if we no longer have the explanatory note in-line, it means we run into a problem: the mediawiki software does not allow us to "nest" reference tags. Since the {efn} template (a brand-new system for explanatory notes) generates a <ref> tag, we can't use the usual {{sfn}} template, because it also invokes a ref tag. However, the {harvnb} template does not invoke a ref tag. That is why, on articles done with harvnb, you see them wrapped with ref tags. So! The citations inside the explanatory note were done with harvnb tags. As you have probably noticed, the sfn and harvnb templates both create clickable links. The harvnb templates will click directly through to the book used as a source, bypassing the "citations" section. Harvnb templates behave differently from sfn templates; for example, they do not generate a period at the end of the citation. Another option for some applications is to use the {{harv}} template, which generates a Harvard citation with parentheses. You did very well to get through this without all this background material, but I thought I would give you the full story so you know why the templates were used in a particular fashion. Let me know if there are any questions. Regards, --Dianna (talk) 04:20, 24 January 2012 (UTC)- Okay. Hopefully someday all can be switched to sfn citing with no ref tags. SAM Coupé Bats 'n Balls.png
I was curious to why you deleted File:SAM Coupé Bats 'n Balls.png:
(Deletion log); 04:24 . . Diannaa (talk | contribs) deleted "File:SAM Coupé Bats 'n Balls.png" (F10: Useless media file (not an image, audio or video))
Last time I checked it had valid content. --Frodet (talk) 17:00, 4 January 2012 (UTC)
- Sorry about that. This file was in Category:Non-free files with orphaned versions more than 7 days old, and I deleted the old copy. But through some weird kind of edit conflict, someone else did a deletion at the same time. There were several of this type of error during that session, and I restored all that I could find that were deleted in error. When I try to undelete this particular file, I get the error message "Error undeleting file: Cannot undelete file revision with timestamp 11:20, July 22, 2005: File was missing before deletion." The file will have to be uploaded again, as I was unable to recover it. My apologies. --Dianna (talk) 19:41, 4 January 2012 (UTC)
Vinkenti Peev
Hi Diannaa,
I am new to wikipedia. Can you please check Vinkenti Peev to see if my editing is roughly ok. Thanks. ShiningWolf (talk) 10:24, 5 January 2012 (UTC)
- Hi, and thank you for wanting to help out with copy edits. Your work was good; the only problem I can see is that you changed the article from using American-style dates to British-style dates. Both are considered correct, and it is something we usually leave alone unless there is a compelling reason to make the change. Regards, --Dianna (talk) 03:19, 6 January 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it. Do you perhaps know where I can find information on the use of titles for Wikipedia articles? I am specifically interested in religious and academic titles. They come up a lot in the editing of articles with a religious slant. Thanks again. ShiningWolf (talk) 06:08, 6 January 2012 (UTC)

Diannaa, I know you have shown interest in this article. I have very recently done some correction, re-write and additions to the "Early life" section of the article. I am in the middle of reading Gerwarth's book. If you have time can you check it for ce. Cheers, Kierzek (talk) 04:33, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
- I am so glad you have a good source for that article, as I have nothing available at the local library or in the nearest large city library. I will try to get to the used bookstore next week to see if there is any more material that we can use. I have Shirer here, and I still have Kershaw sitting around from when we did Hitler, so I will see what is in those, as well. This article needs to be way better than its present state, for sure. I will help. Regards, --Dianna (talk) 04:39, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks. Although, there may be a problem forming with one current editor of the article. If so, may need your admin. assistance, but I hope not; edit disputes / edit warring are such a waste of everyone's time. Kierzek (talk) 02:25, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
- I will help. I gotta get Geli and Ilse done, though, as the Gortemaker book is overdue. I work at the library and don't have to pay late fees, but someone else has placed a hold on it so I feel bad keeping it so long. --Dianna (talk) 03:38, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
- I do highly recommend Gerwarth's book (having read all the main books on Heydrich). I hope to finish it soon. BTW, I did some correction, additions and cite work as to Geli Raubal; see what you think; and get some rest, sometime. Kierzek (talk) 03:15, 13 January 2012 (UTC)
- I am working on Geli right now. This Ibsen source does not look very reliable so I am trying to excise it and replace it with better stuff. Some of the material will have to go. I will get Ilse done too, and then get back to Heydrich. I will have some editing time tomorrow and Sunday, I hope. --Dianna (talk) 03:31, 13 January 2012 (UTC)

Citations script
Hi, long time no see :¬)
I was just wondering if you use a citations script or add-on that is easy to use - mainly for converting bare urls to cite refs. I have tried the "citations" button on the edit window, but it seems to just add more into them rather than turning into a {{cite xxx type ref.
Everything is well with you I hope, and that your RL distractions are good things rather than bad :¬) Chaosdruid (talk) 18:07, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
- Hi! I am still around but spending almost all my time editing articles of my own interest, and helping out with the copy edit drive in a smaller way than I used to do. I hope your chaotic real life is settling down! Now I see where you got your username!
- The best way to do the cites is to strip off any titles or other material the previous editors have added. Turn them into true bare-links refs wrapped in ref tags. Then go to Reflinks and select the "interactive" mode. Place the article name in the window, and let the bot add citation templates. You may have to make corrections or amentments to the material the bot produces. This diff shows the process in action; some cites were completed using the bot, while others were being prepped for another bot run as I made my way through the article.
- Another super tool is WP:Cite4Wiki – an add-on available for Firefox. After the gadget is installed, all you have to do is right-click on a web page and it will put information into a cite template for you. Again, it is a good idea to tweek it for completeness and accuracy. For example, it often misses dates and author names.
- If you have any questions or problems while trying these tricks, please let me know. --Dianna (talk) 20:16, 21 January 2012 (UTC)

CE help
I have been a major contributor to John F. Kennedy article over a few years time and although the whole article could use a ce edit review, one section especially has become too long. The "Southeast Asia" section needs ce trimming and concision work. I have worked on it in the past but it could use a new set of eyes like yours; if you can find the time. Thanks, Kierzek (talk) 14:40, 28 January 2012 (UTC)
- Articles never seem to shrink, do they? People think "to edit" means "to add stuff". I will take it on in my so-called spare time. Aggressive copy editing will knock off a couple thousand words. Thank you for the suggestion. --Dianna (talk) 15:50, 28 January 2012 (UTC)

I just created a new account to help with the copyediting drive, but I don't quite know where to start. I've done the tutorial and the Policies reading, but do I really just dive in and start editing articles in the backlog? Darthamner (talk) 20:18, 31 January 2012 (UTC)

Drive closure
Hi Dianna. I see The UtahRaptor hasn't been online for some days and that you've started the closure activities for the drive. I don't know what's up, but I hope he's OK. Anyway, is there anything I can do to help at the moment without treading on his or your toes? I've made a JPG of the "Wikipedia articles needing copy edit" box as it would have been at midnight UTC (Feburary absent, zero undated, total 3983). I'm not good at graphics, but it's reasonable and I can email it to you if you like. I'll go through the individual totals next to check the arithmetic and will keep a list on my computer of the numbers with the rollover words added in. Anything else I can do to help? Best, Simon. --Stfg (talk) 12:03, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you so much for offering to help. What I would like you to do is upload the JPG to Wiki or to the Commons, or you could email it to me and I will upload it. Checking math is a great idea, and checking the claimed rollover words with the actual rollover words, which are listed here. Another thing that needs doing is to check that the numbers in the leaderboard box agree with the numbers on the lower part of the page. The next step is to create a page like this but it is placed at this location. I think everyone has done their final posts, so these things can be done anytime. I will help a bit when I am home at lunch time. Thank you very much. Utah has only been online intermittently lately so it is too soon to worry --Dianna (talk) 15:35, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
- Great. I've emailed you the jpg as I'm not sure if it needs further processing. I'm checking the rollover words as well as the arithmetic and will then check the leaderboard and create the barnstars page. Cheers for now, Simon. --Stfg (talk) 16:26, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you very much, Simon. I will stay out of the way for the time being. It's great that you've taken this on, as there is then one more person who knows how it is done. Regards, --Dianna (talk) 19:26, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
- Good point. I've finished the corrections to individual counts and the leaderboard now, and will start on the barnstars page next. Please don't worry that I might have overlooked something at this stage -- I'm going to do it in different passes for different barnstar types, as that should make oversights less likely. I'll put a {{GOCEinuse}} tag on it while working, so that people who happen on it by accident can see it's a work in progress. --Stfg (talk) 21:17, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
- I've finished the barnstars page now. Will check tomorrow when fresh. It might not be a bad idea if you were to do some spot checks to see if I've overlooked anything. Best, Simon. --Stfg (talk) 23:25, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you. I will check it tomorrow, and then we can get the newsletter and barnstars sent out. There is a newsletter draft here and SMasters has access to a bot so I will ask him to send it out now. Please feel free to copy edit or amend the newsletter draft if required. See you tomorrow --Dianna (talk) 05:29, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks. I've checked the barnstars page again this morning and not found any errors. I've corrected the number of active participants in the draft newsletter (35 not 33), but otherwise it looks excellent. I'll be ready to help send barnstars when you say so. Perhaps I could do the top half and you the bottom half of the list so we're not giving them to ourselves? <g> See you soon. Simon. --Stfg (talk) 10:34, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- ... or if you're busy, I can do more than half, if not the S's. Just let me know what's needed. Best, Simon. --Stfg (talk) 18:34, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- I will do the bottom half, as suggested. I will start now, and you can do your half anytime too. Regards, --Dianna (talk) 19:19, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- I've finished the barnstars page now. Will check tomorrow when fresh. It might not be a bad idea if you were to do some spot checks to see if I've overlooked anything. Best, Simon. --Stfg (talk) 23:25, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you very much, Simon. I will stay out of the way for the time being. It's great that you've taken this on, as there is then one more person who knows how it is done. Regards, --Dianna (talk) 19:26, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
January drive numbers
Hi there Dianna. I had helped User:Quill and Pen a little bit when she had problems getting the Page size tool to work, and after seeing the barnstar you gave him/her, I went to the drive page to see if she had gotten the script figured out. While there, I realized that s/he hadn't removed {{copyedit}} from the article copyedited. It's only six, but on the off chance that you have already totaled the drive's number I just wanted to point out that a few were missing. I have since removed the templates. Cheers, Nolelover Talk·Contribs 20:20, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- Okay, thank you for your help. --Dianna (talk) 03:20, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
Thanks so much for the Barnstar
Diannaa thanks so much for the lovely Barnstar! Please let me know when the next drive starts so I can sign up. Quill and Pen (talk) 21:17, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi there, just to let you know that I'm putting together a proposal at User:SalopianJames/Sandbox/FAC-B proposal that I thought you might find interesting, and I'd appreciate your feedback on it. Thanks, SalopianJames (talk) 13:13, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you. --Dianna (talk) 15:39, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
- Did you have any thoughts? SalopianJames (talk) 19:32, 9 February 2012 (UTC)
- I am unclear how this would be different from the processes already in place at WP:Peer review and Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Requests/Potential Featured Articles. --Dianna (talk) 20:00, 9 February 2012 (UTC)
- The third phase of the implementation is the nub of the proposal here. SalopianJames (talk) 20:21, 9 February 2012 (UTC)

Diannaa, see the talk page discussion as to the "latest bones of contention". Also in my comments you will note that as to this article, I believe the "film portrayals" should be kept in. Kierzek (talk) 17:18, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you for your note. I agree that the film portrayals should be kept in this particular article. I feel strongly about this issue but am prepared to back down in this instance because you have asked. --Dianna (talk) 00:18, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks. I owe you one. I will add that if it ever goes up for GA and the reviewer wants it gone, so be it. Kierzek (talk) 00:46, 8 February 2012 (UTC)

Message from PBS
I did not mean to be sharp with you, on my last comment on Talk:Führerbunker, please do not take it that way.
The current WP:INTEGRITY addresses some of the issues. But I think the system we use for citing sources has a real problem for a collaborative project like this. Because we place all footnotes after punctuation one can not tell by looking at a footnote marker location if it is a footnote for just that sentence or for all the sentences since the start of the paragraph or the previous footnote. Personally I would be in favour of introducing a Wikipedia style of footnoting that placed footnote markers inside sentences for a a citation about that sentence and outside for all the sentences since the start of the paragraph or the last footnote marker. This would then fail safe.
Years ago I pressed for us to use that method but there was no traction for it. For some years I was successful in keeping the options open either to use Nature type citations (which are before punctuation) or the Chicago system. There were lots of indecisive RFCs until eventually there was one which went decisively against alowing the use of the Nature before punctuation system. So for the moment we are stuck with a system that does not fail safe and so sourced material can easily be chopped off from its in-line citation by the imposition of a sentence with a citation into the middle of a paragraph etc. -- PBS (talk) 01:58, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
- I have made another post on the article talk page as I do not understand your comment there. I am very tired today so please bear with me if I am missing something obvious. Thank you for the above information. When I hear of these discussions from the long-ago I realise what a n00b I still am and I appreciate the guidance of long-term editors. I am gonna go read; I picked up a copy of The Great Gatsby from the discards, and will prolly not post any more today. --Dianna (talk) 02:04, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
Hi,
I've begun reviewing your nomination and made a few comments at Talk:Reinhard Heydrich/GA1

- Just a few questions at Talk:Reinhard Heydrich/GA1, then it's good to go. Very good article. Explains well. Job well done! MathewTownsend (talk) 18:31, 16 February 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you! I have replied there. -- Dianna (talk) 19:27, 16 February 2012 (UTC)
