Question 1 Dec 2015

I watch Guru Nanak. My watchlist showed:
"(Deletion log); 03:44 . . Diannaa (talk | contribs) changed visibility of a revision on page Guru Nanak: content hidden ‎(RD1: Blatant copyright violations)"
I went to the article history but could not discover what you had done. It would be useful to know where the copyright violation had been, in case I had (inadvertently I assure you, if that was the case) been the contributor. If I wasn't the offender, I would still like to know more, so that I could help with the 'policing' in future. Apuldram (talk) 12:33, 1 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi Apuldram. Copyright content was added by user:Suim1313 on November 24 and was removed by yourself later that day. Content was copied from http://www.speakingtree.in/blog/guru-nanak-574137. The edit was discovered via User:EranBot/Copyright/rc, which lists some 361 potentially copy vio edits from the period November 16 to November 26. -- Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 13:50, 1 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi Diannaa, could you tell me what would be the collateral damage in making a block on the 166.170.xxx.xxx range? I'd like to gather some facts before making any earth shattering proposals. This range is mainly used by a blocked editor who only shows up when Ricky81682 comments on ANI to harass, troll and attack him. Thanks Blackmane (talk) 01:53, 2 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi there Blackmane. The tool I use (Template:Blockcalc) requires a list of IPs. -- Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 01:56, 2 December 2015 (UTC)
(talk page watcher) Note that the 166.*.*.* range is topic banned from any WOP-related pages (an area in which Ricky happens to edit). [1] --NeilN talk to me 02:06, 2 December 2015 (UTC)
Today's ANI edits were from a named acct, User:Wowitmoves. I have no check-user so I can't say whether that was him or not. -- Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 02:12, 2 December 2015 (UTC)
I don't believe that Wowitmoves is related to 166.170.x.x range as that accounted posted to a number of other threads that Ricky did not participate in. Ricky has been active in raising AfD's relating to the WOP articles. A number of editors have been sanctioned for disruption in that area, but only this IP editor has gone to the extreme of targeting a particular user. I'll do some digging to get some IP's for you. Thanks Blackmane (talk) 00:58, 3 December 2015 (UTC)
I think the rangeblock idea may have been floated before but collateral damage would be too high. But yeah, see what you can find and one of us will examine it. -- Diannaa (talk) 01:00, 3 December 2015 (UTC)
I definitely now think the collateral would be too high. I noticed another post on ANI from the 166 range except it had gone out to 166.176.x.x. The last few posts on ANI have been from 166.176.59.69, 166.176.59.110, 166.170.48.222, 166.170.46.213, 166.170.48.13 and 166.170.48.58 in the last few days. They never post a great deal, just hit and runs then change IPs. Blackmane (talk) 05:20, 3 December 2015 (UTC)

Suspected CV

Hey Diannaa, how are you? Just came across Recurrent neural network and it looked fishy. I got an Earwig report of about 97% with http://spotidoc.com/doc/1157819/chapter-2-deep-learning. I can't trace the origins of that document, but it appears to be some kind of book excerpt. What do you reckon? Cheers, FoCuS contribs; talk to me! 03:43, 2 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi User:FoCuSandLeArN. The piece looks like a wiki-mirror or a collection of our articles (the chapter starts with the declaration that "'neural network' redirects here"). It looks to me like our article grew organically over time and is okay. -- Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 03:53, 2 December 2015 (UTC)

Deleted file, license pending

Hi Diannaa- I’m new here, my first draft article is in my sandbox Looks like for one photo I did it right regarding the pending licence verification, but for the other I didn’t. Both from the same source, both referenced in email [Ticket#: 2015112810000667] What should I do? Or will it all go thru OK if just I wait for the 44-day processing backlog?

Thanks, C=lambda*nu (talk) 04:11, 2 December 2015 (UTC)

I've gone ahead and restored it and added the "OTRS pending" template. -- Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 04:23, 2 December 2015 (UTC)

WebHost?

Hello. Sorry to harass you again, but that's the consequence of being kind (watch out: you could become my best-trusted en-wiki sysop; this is the time to be rude in order to avoid it ^^)

I came here following the contributions of a user who would meet our policies about paid-contribution and found this user page. Is that ok for en-wiki policies? Thanks in advance for your attention--Formica rufa (talk) 07:53, 2 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi User:Formica rufa. The page qualifies for U5 speedy deletion as Wikipedia is not a web host. I would discuss it with the user first if he was actively editing as well, but he is not. He's not touched article space since 2013. Thanks for reporting. -- Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 14:53, 2 December 2015 (UTC)

--The Avengers 13:54, 2 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi User:The Avengers. Thanks for reporting this problem. I am not an admin on Commons. Here's some things you can do:
  • If you are using Chrome, you can right-click on any image and select "Search Google for this image" to find likely sources for copy vio images.
  • Just like on this wiki, if photos on the Commons are copy vio, you don't have to start a deletion request, which normally remains open for a week. You can tag them for speedy deletion, and they will be deleted within a few hours. On the Commons, look on the left menu for the option to report as copyright violation. On this wiki, mark them for F9 speedy deletion using Twinkle.
  • There's some useful pre-written messages at User:Diannaa/Copyright that you are welcome to copy or modify for these situations. I've posted a message on the user's talk page at the Commons and nominated all the images for deletion as copyright violations. -- Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 14:47, 2 December 2015 (UTC)

Draft:August Puig

Hi, Diannaa! This is/was on my watchlist, so I was just looking at your changes there when suddenly … there was nothing to look at! First, I'm sure you were right to remove the content that started off "The anger of modesty", as that presumably belongs to Josep M. Cadena, who wrote it; I should have noticed that, my mistake. I know you also removed another chunk, but I didn't have time to see what it was. What I just wanted to check, though, was that you did see the OTRS permission on the talk page there. Because it was my impression that the content (apart from that "anger of modesty" stuff) was covered by his release. Do you see that differently? Regards, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 16:50, 2 December 2015 (UTC)

Never mind, I see you've restored it. Thanks, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 16:52, 2 December 2015 (UTC)
Yeah, the OTRS ticket (on the talk page) flashed on the screen briefly whilst I was deleting, so I restored it. It gives permission for the remaining content. -- Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 16:54, 2 December 2015 (UTC)

Article rejection 3rd time

Draft:The People's Alliance (Durham, NC)

Hi! You helped me before. My article submission was rejected for a third time. The first rejection (by Wia) was for lack of references, paraphrasing and copyrights. I fixed issues (you helped on first draft).

The second rejection (by LaMona) was because she felt the organization was not notable enough and needed better references.

I revised line by line and located sources to support each sentence in draft, which are statements of past facts and accomplishments, not my opinion. Combined they demonstrate the organization is notable. The organization is referred to in the Wiki article about Durham, NC. I understand that using other wiki articles does not always make a reference acceptable. Durham, NC is a city of 250,000 in a metropolitan area of 1 million. The organization has been continuously active in Durham since their formation in 1975. There are 63 boxes of reference materials in the State of North Carolina Collection in the Durham Library system. The Duke University Perkins Library has 5 folios of materials. They are notable.

The third rejection (by SisterTwister) is because she feels the article reads like an advertisement. How so?

I am not involved with the PA in any way whatsoever. I'm very frustrated, but more confused. The other students in our class added to other articles - sometimes very poor contributions - and all were accepted. The 3 of us who tried to create an original article, to bring relevant civil rights and social issues to Wikipedia have been rejected.

Can you shed some light? Is it worth the effort to continue on an organization that will continue to be judged as not notable? There is one week left in our semester. Thank you kindly. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Feliciakw (talkcontribs) 02:27, 4 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi Feliciakw. You'd be better off discussing this with the people who declined the draft. -- Diannaa (talk) 02:31, 4 December 2015 (UTC)
Hi again. I've done some copy edits and asked SisterTwister to take another look at the draft. -- Diannaa (talk) 03:34, 4 December 2015 (UTC)

ALO (artist)

Hi again. There's a cross-wiki spam campaign on this article. Could you please check whether it meets en.wiki criteria for inclusion (the subject could be encyclopedic, but the Italian version was quite emphatic and promotional)?--Formica rufa (talk) 17:37, 5 December 2015 (UTC)

I have checked for copy vio and found nothing. There's at least two sources (here and here) that has in-depth coverage, so the article might survive at AFD. It's already had a speedy deletion nomination declined, so that's out. -- Diannaa (talk) 18:44, 5 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi Diannaa - I saw that you deleted Category:Wikipedia files missing permission as of 26 November 2015 and in fact it appears to be empty when visited. However, check out File:Police State 3- Total Enslavement.jpg. Some kind of bug? Kelly hi! 19:18, 6 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi Kelly. There's been weird issues with categories lately. I made it appear in the category by performing a null edit on the image. Errors like these can be caught by periodically going through the parent category and looking for oddities, as (if I recall correctly) all pages periodically receive a null edit. -- Diannaa (talk) 19:30, 6 December 2015 (UTC)
Thanks! I remember some category glitches last month but for some reason I was thinking it had been fixed. Guess not... Kelly hi! 19:52, 6 December 2015 (UTC)

Probably copyvio image

Hi Dianna. Could you possible check this edit where a new account reverted my removal of an image? If you check the source link of the image it was obtained from a fan website and it is probably a copyvio imo. Thank you as always. Dr. K. 15:59, 7 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi Dr K. The image was reviewed on the day of upload by Commons admin User:INeverCry, who confirmed the photo was released under license. -- Diannaa (talk) 19:35, 7 December 2015 (UTC)
Thank you Dianna. I saw that but I checked the website and I couldn't find any copyright info or policy. It also looked like a user-generated site. So I thought I'd ask for a second opinion. Dr. K. 19:42, 7 December 2015 (UTC)
I was never able to reach the bottom of the page to see if the CC by symbol was there - the page just keeps loading more images. I suggest you contact INeverCry for more information. -- Diannaa (talk) 19:46, 7 December 2015 (UTC)
I had exactly the same problem and that was one reason I had some doubts. Thank you for the advice. Best regards. Dr. K. 21:24, 7 December 2015 (UTC)
@Dr.K.: At the very bottom of http://sjcontents.tistory.com/356, at right, is a small cc-by icon showing a cc-by-4.0 license when you mouse over it. Korean Commons admin -revi and I have reviewed several thousand of these over the past year or so. He's got a page over on Commons that explains these K-Pop images a bit more: commons:User:-revi/Tistory. These photogs upload a whole series of photos they take at an event to these tistory pages; the EXIF is uniform throughout, so re-blogging is extremely unlikely, though I've seen it once in a great while, and those rare copyvios get CSD'd. I do the majority of these reviews, so I see the same photogs over and over (like SJ in this case). As for the site load time, I have 100mbps, so the page loads completely in a couple seconds, but I could see it being hard on a slower connection. INeverCry 00:43, 8 December 2015 (UTC)
  •   Comment: Surprising, btw, that a review from one of the most experienced people at Commons is so easily disregarded or distrusted. I've deleted 286,000 images and pages at Commons. I have over 100,000 edits in the Commons namespace, tagging copyvios and filing/closing DRs, which is equaled only by Turelio and EugeneZelenko. If I pass a review, you can count on it being solid. INeverCry 00:56, 8 December 2015 (UTC)
I certainly believed you. Sorry to have bothered you. -- Diannaa (talk) 00:58, 8 December 2015 (UTC)
@INeverCry: When I made my first enquiry I had not seen your approval of the picture. After two new users added the picture to the article repeatedly, I thought I should check the source of the picture first. So I checked the link provided in the image and I could not reach the bottom of the page. When Dianna mentioned that you had approved the picture I went back and saw your approval but the source page did not load properly at that time either. As you may realise I don't frequent Commons and I didn't know about the technical collaboration you had with the Korean admin at Commons or about your wide experience with this type of files. The fact that the source page was not loading properly meant that I couldn't verify this on my own and so since I had opened this thread anyway I thought I would ask Dianna for some additional advice. You obviously have more experience in evaluating image licensing than I have but I think you can agree that asking someone questions on how to verify these images does not equal mistrusting you. The heading of this thread calling the picture a probable copyvio was created before I saw that you approved it and I would not have written it this way had I seen your comment on the picture. Btw, after the page finally loaded I saw the tiny arrow with cc by sa in Korean, just below the final picture on the right side. Dr. K. 01:57, 8 December 2015 (UTC)
@Dr.K.: All right, I'll let it slide this time, just don't let it happen again; you too Diannaa...   INeverCry 02:43, 8 December 2015 (UTC)

WP:UAA

I've long been wondering. What's the holding pen? Something like Bishzilla's pocket? Bishonen | talk 17:04, 7 December 2015 (UTC).

Hi Bishonen. The holding pen is located at WP:UAAHP. For the bot section of the board, any cases marked as "Wait", "Watch", or "being discussed" are moved there automatically by a bot. For the user-reported section of the board, cases have to be moved manually. I review the cases after about a week and look for recent edits. Almost all users cease editing with those accounts once they're made aware of the policy. -- Diannaa (talk) 19:32, 7 December 2015 (UTC)

Deletion of an image

Earlier, a user had requested that I add a non-free use rationale for the image below. I do not know how to "add" a rationale, and asked the user to tell me how. (I added it inside the source of the image details, but apparently that wasn't correct) I didn't receive any reply and you deleted it a few days after.

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Nile_online_screenshot_thumb.jpg&action=edit&redlink=1

I don't know how to request undeletion of an image on Wikipedia, either... this is all very frustrating. Can you take a look at this please? --Agamemnus (talk) 22:54, 7 December 2015 (UTC)

Sorry you got no response from the nominator. We have a series of templates you can use to add non-free rationales to images. Some of the most common ones are available at User:Diannaa/My Templates and there's a full list at Category:Non-free use rationale templates. I've added the required rationale for you. -- Diannaa (talk) 23:09, 7 December 2015 (UTC)
Thanks. I see now... I thought it was supposed to be inside the curly braces of the "Non-free web screenshot" item. --Agamemnus (talk) 02:42, 8 December 2015 (UTC)

Spam usernames

Hi Dianna. First of all,let me say thanks for all your work at UAA. I worked there for a period of years but I got kind of burned out on it. I've also spent a lot of time working with unblock requests, including recently signing up at UTRS to review blocks there. That brings me to my point, which is regarding people violating ORGNAME and making promotional edits. There are two perfectly valid administrative responses to this. One is the hard block, requiring an appeal in which the user must indicate what new name they would like and commit to not doing promotional edits, and even then maybe get hit with the {{coiq}} template. The other is {{softerblock}}. I guess I have become a sort evangelist for this approach. Below are some details on why that is.

In almost every case, these people are just clueless. They've gotten so used to a world where they can control their message in every place on the web that it honestly does not occur to them that this is not such a place. I know, it seems ridiculous if you think about it even a little bit that a site that strives to be neutral would let article subjects write their own articles and turn them into PR junk, but we are the exception, not the rule. These people aren't being malicious or trying to subvert what Wikipedia is, they just didn't think it through before they started editing.

Next is the use of administrative resources to review these blocks. They are almost all the same, something along the lines of "I had no idea, I didn't intent to promote, I'll try not to do it anymore". There is no way to know whether they now really get it or not, the only way to find out is to unblock. Before doing that, the reviewing admin would usually need to talk to the blocking admin, which can stretch the proces put over a matter of days.

With the soft block, the user is told "You cannot use this name. You also should not be making promotional edits. Pick a new name and try again." No review is needed, the user can just take another swing at it under another name. If they still can't see the difference between neutrality and spamming, they get blocked again. It's just more efficient and easy for everyone. Of course this approach should never be used with persistent spammers, but I think it most cases where they picked an ORGNAME and made 1-5 sort of promotional edits it is the best approach. Just some free advice for you to take or leave as you please. Beeblebrox (talk) 01:52, 8 December 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for the suggestion Beeblebrox. I will give that a try. -- Diannaa (talk) 13:14, 8 December 2015 (UTC)

Clockenflap

I noticed you have revdel'ed a portion of the page and blocked one of the editors User:Clockenflapp who made the edits but missed one of the puppets User:Clockenflap (missing a p on the end) involved. If you wish you may use the soft block again but this is beginning to encroach on habitual spamming since the single p user was warned about COI usernames and editing before the new name was made.McMatter (talk)/(contrib) 14:07, 8 December 2015 (UTC)

Hardblocking one will prevent account creation by both, assuming they are using the same IP. -- Diannaa (talk) 14:18, 8 December 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for your alertness. I will add the user to my list of "people to watch". I have rev-deleted the copy vio on State of the Nation with Jessica Soho. Results:

Hasty reversion to Hut tax

Hi, I don't understand what lead you to believe that my additions to Hut tax constituted a copyright violation and threaten me with a ban. As the text is inaccessible, I can't show you how it was paraphrased from the original source. There was only one source, but it was not taken verbatim. You have also removed the improvements I made to the organization of the article and as I recall (I can't access my edits) the lede. I am baffled as to why you wouldn't first engage with me on the talk page, where I also made comments about the page and my edits. Thanks. Bangabandhu (talk) 04:49, 9 December 2015 (UTC)

Content matches material in this document. The comparison report between your addition and the source can be viewed here. Sorry, but I'm not seeing much in the way of paraphrasing here. -- Diannaa (talk) 06:52, 9 December 2015 (UTC)
Could you check the second link? I am familiar with the first link, it was the source material. I registered on iThenticate to access the second link but it says the content is unavailable. Also could you reply to the other questions I asked? Thanks. Bangabandhu (talk) 15:06, 9 December 2015 (UTC)
Hi Bangabandhu. The overlap between the source and your edit was reported by a bot on this report. It looks like the api.ithenticate.com has been removed now that the item has been marked as resolved, as I could still view it yesterday. I have sent you a copy of the edit via email as I don't wish to reproduce it here. There's no reason why I would check with you before removing this obvious copyright violation or discuss it on the talk page. -- Diannaa (talk) 15:27, 9 December 2015 (UTC)

Possible block evasion.

Hello,

I'm not sure if this is the appropriate place for this, but I noticed it in my watchlist. An edit was made by User:AsianmanR390 to a page that bore a striking resemblance to Toyota97 (whom you blocked a few days ago for several copyright violations). I got curious and compared some of the edit history and it was very similar (mostly music albums) and there was only one edit on the account prior to Toyota97 getting blocked. I also noticed that there was a Sockpuppet investigation regarding them, but it was dropped. JohnMcButts (talk) 05:26, 9 December 2015 (UTC)

Sorry for the delay in replying. It looks like a duck sock to me; no need to bother the busy folks at SPI. I have blocked the sock and will watch some of the articles they have in common. -- Diannaa (talk) 19:40, 9 December 2015 (UTC)

Thank you. I appreciate having the benefit of this detailed information regarding Wikipedia policies & practices.
I always conscientiously try to adhere to normal high standards of attribution and reference citations with regard to sourcing, here and in other writing that I to, although I do admit to being less than totally familiar with some of the many, numerous and more arcane Wikipedia policies that have evolved, accrued and accumulated on innumerable pages herein in recent years.
If you are suggesting that I may have violated any such policies in my Wikipedia editing, I would appreciate knowing specifically, and it would be most helpful to know precisely, where (at what articles, or TalkPages??) you think that may be.
Thank you very much for your assistance. --- Professor JR (talk) 07:42, 9 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi Professor JR. The specific article was Hillary Clinton presidential campaign, 2016. Content was added on November 25 and was detected by a bot and listed on User:EranBot/Copyright/rc/17. The material was a match for this AP article. -- Diannaa (talk) 19:50, 9 December 2015 (UTC)

Possible block evasion

Hi Diannaa, I'm wondering if this account [2] is related to one that you recently blocked: [3]. Thanks and cheers, 2601:188:0:ABE6:D538:9C0E:BF78:37A3 (talk) 11:46, 9 December 2015 (UTC)

Looks like a match, but they were blocked mostly for the username violation. The article will never be accepted unless/until the notability requirement is met, so I think we are okay to leave it alone -- Diannaa (talk) 20:35, 9 December 2015 (UTC)

addition to Hendersonville, Tennessee

Diannaa, I noticed your concern about copyright violations on addition to Hendersonville, Tennessee. I assure you that all the text is my own in my own words. There are no more than four or five words at a time that are similar to the sources. And those are unavoidable, such as "As of November 2015...." Please allow my entry. Thank you. Safehomes (talk) 15:21, 9 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi Safehomes. I've re-added the section on Government, which it looks like I removed by mistake. Sorry, -- Diannaa (talk) 20:48, 9 December 2015 (UTC)

Dianna, thank you for replacing some of the content. Will you re-add the rest of the section I composed for government? There is another paragraph about the mayor's election. None of it has copyright issues. Thank you. Safehomes (talk) 20:58, 9 December 2015 (UTC)

No, I won't because it wasn't removed by me, and was removed for reasons other than copyright issues. -- Diannaa (talk) 22:59, 9 December 2015 (UTC)

Edit war

Hi Diannaa. Hope you're swell. Johnny Freak is edit warring again, even after I reminded him of your warning. I'm tired. Cheers. Film Fan 12:41, 10 December 2015 (UTC)

Why did you upload a new copy of the poster at 16:03, December 7, 2015? There's no edit summary. Perhaps you both need to examime your behaviour. -- Diannaa (talk) 13:54, 10 December 2015 (UTC)
Because the existing version was tiny. Thanks so much for your help. Film Fan 17:15, 10 December 2015 (UTC)
PS: You warned us both for edit warring, he carried on and didn't get a block, I didn't carry on and did get a block, and now he has done it again (and without any reason other than to try and ruffle my feathers) and still he gets nothing - not even a reminder of the warning. Something isn't right here. Film Fan 17:19, 10 December 2015 (UTC)
I think you are making the mistake of assuming that I am monitoring the behaviour of yourself and Johnny Freak. I am not. If someone is edit warring, the place to go is Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Edit warring. -- Diannaa (talk) 20:13, 10 December 2015 (UTC)
My point stands. Film Fan 00:08, 11 December 2015 (UTC)

About copying pages

Thanks for informing me about that copying from Wikipedia. But, the page you have cited List of One Day International cricket matches was created by me and I only took few paragraphs from One Day International cricket page for the introduction. Defense Information Systems Agency - Removal of Content

Diannaa, instead of eliminating content that was added to the DISA page, did you look for copyright information on that website? It's NOT copyrighted because it's a government agency and is considered PUBLIC. If you searched the sourcecode on the website you may have identified there is NO copyright on the entire site. Respectfully, --63.80.169.242 (talk) 02:40, 12 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi Titodutta. According to my investigation in September 2015, the supposed source page is actually a Wikipedia mirror. That means they copied from us rather than the other way around. Some of it has been there since 2007, and some you added yourself in 2011. The supposed source page is dated 2013. I have removed the tag. -- Diannaa (talk) 21:53, 13 December 2015 (UTC)

Please restore All India Men's Welfare Association Page

Hi! I am, Uma Challa, the Founder, President of All India Men's Welfare Association. I had posted an article about the organization on wikipedia, with references, this morning, and it was promptly deleted citing copyright infringement of http:aimwa.org. Every word in the AIMWA Charter was written by me following a meeting with founding members. Someone set up that website without my permission, and has posted the content there. I can forward the original emails of me drafting the AIMWA Charter and sharing it with many people, including international men's welfare advocacy groups. I am not in violation of any copyright. In fact, it is my content which is often stolen and posted on various websites, which I have to fight from time to time. I request you to please restore the wikipedia page. Sorry I misused the term "Cut and Paste"

Hi,

Thank you for your attention to my edits. I admit I am new to Wikipedia editing. Diannaa just recinded many of my edits, and the only reason given at this time was that I announced that I cut-and-pasted them in.

The problem is that I cut-and-pasted the content FROM MY OWN WEBSITE that I had written all by myself.

The site I was updating was that of my wife, Echo Chernik. The page has an alert asking for citations and more information, so I went on and starting entering in all of the factual relevant information. Since much of that was previously written on my other website, i cut and pasted a lot of it. For instance, there was a huge list of awards and news articles - all factual. There was an update to her artistic methods, again, all factual.

I wholly intend to finish "citing" correctly but I can't do it all in one shot as a noob. Maybe I shouldn't have use the words "cut-and-paste", and I'm sorry for confusing you.

Can all that content be put back? Am I allowed to go back and re-add everything you removed? Do I have to get someone else to do that? Are there other things that need to be done correctly before that content will be allowed?

Thank you. LazarusBlack (talk) 23:14, 21 December 2015 (UTC)Lazarus Chernik

Request for copyedits

Hi Diannaa. Yesterday I come across a very interesting parallel dimension travelling story. After some quick research, I concluded there was enough coverage for a small article. I've created the article under the name Taured mystery and would appreciate your copyedits. Let me know what your personal take on the whole story is... a mere hoax? Or... will we in the future hear about the creation of a nation called "Taured"? Peace, Jonas Vinther • (Click here to collect your price!) 17:12, 22 December 2015 (UTC)

I read the article with interest. It's in good shape and doesn't need a copy edit. -- Diannaa (talk) 00:31, 23 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi Diannaa, I got your message about the image that needed proof of permissions, and as of today, the source page has been modified to contain an additional line at the bottom giving this permission. I'm not sure if I modified the file page correctly; would you be willing to let me know if the problem remains? (And if it does, is there any way to extend the deadline of December 24th for image deletion?)

P.S. I wasn't sure how to send a message, is leaving notes on the talk page the correct way to communicate?

Doylej2 (talk) 18:32, 22 December 2015 (UTC)

The best way to communicate with me is to post a message here on this page.Doylej2, posting on the file description page is not adequate evidence of permission. What you need to do is have the copyright holder send an email to the OTRS team releasing the image to Wikipedia under license. There's a sample email at WP:consent. Once this has been done, you can add the template {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page. If the file is deleted before this is taken care of, it can later be restored. -- Diannaa (talk) 19:42, 22 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi Diannaa, thanks for getting back to me so quickly.

I think my last message probably used the wrong terminology when it said "source page". I was referring to the part of the "no permission" notice that said that one acceptable option was: "make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA [...] at the site of the original publication". This has been done (at the site of the original publication, the original non-Wikipedia website) and a note to that effect has been left on the file description page. Will this suffice?

Doylej2 (talk) 20:22, 22 December 2015 (UTC)

Yes, that works perfectly. Thanks for taking the time to set this up! -- Diannaa (talk) 21:08, 22 December 2015 (UTC)

Holcot

Hi Diannaa You have sent me a message about Holcot and the changes I made today. The material I added was not copyrighted - it was an edit of material that I had written on our village website. The material regarding the national 2011 census is in the public domain and cited (and is much more up to date than the 2001 census data included on the previous version of the page). Can I have my edits back please, or more explicit guidance as I am new to this! Thanks for Everything. Holcotdw (talk) 23:19, 23 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi Holcotdw. Unfortunately we can't take your word for it that you are the person who wrote the material that already appears online. A simple way to manage this is to re-write it so that it no longer matches the source website. Alternatively, you can follow the instructions at WP:donating copyrighted materials to release the material to Wikipedia under license. -- Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 03:42, 24 December 2015 (UTC)

Your commment on Ferrer1965 talk page in relation to dr Sam Parnia's page

Thank-you for your feedback dear Diannaa. I have tried to edit the paragraphs you had removed, using my own words. Hope they are okay now. I have also read some of the references you mentioned. One question I have pertains to abstracts from Pubmed. Provided text is published with quotes and also with reference to the original article, can large chunks of the abstract be published in their entirety? This would come in handy because we are dealing with medical vocabulary and expressions, and it is not easy to reformulate with own words. Ferrer1965 (talk) 08:26, 25 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi Diannaa. It looks like there could be significant copyright issues on Sam Parnia (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) based on these results (ignoring the forums). Thoughts? Thanks. — JJMC89(T·C) 09:37, 25 December 2015 (UTC)
Hi Ferrer1965. Wikipedia:Copyright violations is the policy page about copyright on Wikipedia. There's a FAQ page to help you get started interpreting the policy. Per our non-free content guideline, quotations from copyright material are only permitted where there's no free replacement. I have done some more cleaning of the Sam Parnia article. Some of the copyright violations have been in place for years. -- Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 14:58, 25 December 2015 (UTC)

General question regarding edits

Hi, Diannaa and Merry Christmas! I selected you from the admin page at random to ask a question about editing on Wikipedia. If a user makes an edit, is there any way that user can request to edit their comments after the fact? I am a new user who made three edits to a particular page regarding an individual (living person) -- I used a different username than this one. While I know my edits were correct, I immediately regretted some things I said in the edit summaries. Of course, "undo" was not an option -- I assumed I had a fail-safe from looking at other pages (dangers of a new user), so I didn't tread as carefully as I should have. I did some research and tried contacting Oversight but, appropriately, my issue was not at that level. For context, my concerns are that one comment used poor wording which may incorrectly indicate that I personally know the subject of the WP article (and it may not be good to be associated with this person), and the other concern is using an inappropriate (and probably incorrect) statement that reversing my edit would be reported. Can you provide information regarding options I have, if any? Thanks! Alex1810s (talk) 04:15, 26 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi Alex. Revision deletion and oversight have really strict requirements and hiding things we later regret saying is not one of them. Please see Wikipedia:Revision deletion for the actual policy. -- Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 14:05, 26 December 2015 (UTC)

I have noticed that you seem to do a lot of work with copyright violations/violators, so would you mind taking a look at Melvin Villacote (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log)? It's a user who continues to upload copyrighted images even though their talk page is full of notices/warnings about copyvios, and CSD notifications about images they've uploaded... Deletion of bio for Noel A. Alpins

I believe you were involved with the deletion of a bio on Australian ophthalmologist Noel Alpins. I've copied a portion of the automated email I received upon that deletion. Dr. Alpins is a notable figure; however, my entry for his "Alpins method of astigmatism analysis" also was deleted, as based on the Wikipedia COI guidelines, I apparently am an unpaid advocate of the method. Dr. Alpins' importance in ophthalmology and Australia in general are easily discerned. If indeed you were involved with the deletion of his bio, can I give you some evidence of his influence?

Here's an excerpt from the automated email I received:

Dear Kcroes,
The Wikipedia page User:Kcroes/Noel A. Alpins has been deleted on 21 December 2015 by Diannaa, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Kcroes/Noel_A._Alpins.

I did not delete the article; I only deleted a redirect to it. The actual article was at Noel A. Alpins and it was deleted as a copyright violation of http://www.newvisionclinics.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/Dr-Noel-Alpins-CV-2012.pdf by administrator DGG on December 21. -- Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 23:15, 29 December 2015 (UTC)

Deleted my post

Hi Dianna, My content and articles are being deleted or amended contentiously without reading the referral pages. Please read the reference before deleting anything. If you don't want me to contribute to wiki. please delete my account. I will do something productive in my leisure. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Microsoftguru1 (talkcontribs) 03:39, 30 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi Microsoftguru1. The material was removed because it was a copyright violation. Prose you find online is almost always copyright, and cannot be copied here; it's against the law to do so. All prose must be written in your own words. Copyright law and its application are complex matters, and you should not edit any more until you have taken the time to read and understand our copyright policies. -- Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 15:17, 30 December 2015 (UTC)

Guatemalan vandal is back

The Guatemalan vandal is back after the range expired and is editing under this IP 190.104.120.240 (talk · contribs · WHOIS). I will fill out a long-term abuse report so that the Wikipedia community is aware of the situation in the event you are unavailable right away. Erick (talk) 19:51, 30 December 2015 (UTC)

This is a different range from before, so I have blocked the IP for a week. Let me know when he pops up on a new IP and I will calculate a range block. Thanks for reporting, -- Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 21:11, 30 December 2015 (UTC)
Thanks! I have written the long-term abuse report here. You have a good New Year's Day! :) Erick (talk) 04:04, 31 December 2015 (UTC)

Toomelah

G'day Diana. I am thinking of paraphrasing the new material for this article, will this satisfy the copyright issue? As it is, Toomelah is a stub. GerixAu (talk) 23:16, 30 December 2015 (UTC)

You are welcome to re-write the material in your own words and add it to the article. Please cite your source, which was here. If you don't know how to add citations, please refer to Help:Referencing for beginners. Thanks, -- Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 23:21, 30 December 2015 (UTC)

Did you know ... that back in 1885, Wikipedia editors wrote Good Articles with axes, hammers and chisels?

Thank you for your contributions to this encyclopedia using 21st century technology. I hope you don't get any unneccessary blisters.

Obaidullah - Removal of Content

Hi Dianna, thanks for your note explaining copyright on Wikipedia. I am indeed a new user. However, I am concerned because you removed all of the information I added to the Obaidullah page when these additions do not pose copyright problems. You removed quotations from Obaidullah's declaration in US legal proceedings which are not copyrighted and are public. You also removed updates/corrections to information that was cited regarding Obaidullah's age and disposition under US law/policy, which were properly attributed to public/government sources. Finally, you removed information from and attributed to an Amnesty International report, although Amnesty International publications are licensed under Creative Commons and can be used for these purposes, see https://www.amnesty.org/en/about-us/permissions/. Thanks and please let me know if you can revert. SWHR2016 (talk) 16:31, 31 December 2015 (UTC)SWHR2016

Hello SWHR2016. All of the removed content appears in the document http://www.amnestyusa.org/sites/default/files/amr510512013en.pdf. Amnesty International material is released under a Creative Commons attribution, non-commercial, no derivatives, international 4.0 licence, which is not a compatible license. I will not be able to restore the content. Sorry, -- Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 19:06, 31 December 2015 (UTC)
