If you are stuck, and looking for help, please come to the New contributors' help page, where experienced Wikipedians can answer any queries you have! Or, you can just type {{helpme}} and your question on your user talk page, and someone will show up shortly to answer. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

We hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! By the way, you can sign your name on talk and vote pages using four tildes, like this: ~~~~. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! CWC 02:45, 15 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Edit to Fred Phelps Article - Seeking Constructive Criticism

edit

If you have read [my edit request] for the Fred Phelps article, I would greatly appreciate feedback regarding the manner in which I requested it. While the request may be minor, it is the first major edit I have ever made, and is important to me. I'm especially interested in criticism regarding how I could better use wiki mark-up tools and such. Thanks! Drake Maijstral 00:09, 15 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

I've trimmed down that section. I think it's better now, but I'm not claiming to have fixed it completely.
For learning how things work around here, see the links in the 'welcome package' I've added above. I'm afraid there's a lot of reading there — a general encyclopedia is a big project. On the other hand, we do understand that it takes a while to get up to speed, from our own experience. The great thing about this wiki is that mistakes can always be fixed.
For the markup stuff, I'd suggest starting with the Wikipedia:Cheatsheet and following the links in it. What most of us do is create a "sandbox" page, say "User:Drake Maijstral/Sandbox", for testing.
One more point: someone who starts out by seeking constructive criticism is the ideal type of person to edit here. What a great start! So let me repeat: welcome to Wikipedia! CWC 02:45, 15 July 2007 (UTC) (another Walter J Williams fan)Reply
Chris, thank you very much for the feedback! You are most generous. I also have to give you credit for the fast recognition of my name's source - I have been using it since I opened my first email account back in 1997 or 1998, and have used it in many other places. While it has - rarely - been recognized before, I have never had it recognized this fast, let alone had anyone mention the author's name! If you don't mind, I would like to ask for clarification on how you decided to edit the page I noted.
Don't get me wrong - I'm not in any way doubting that you did the right thing, I just really am trying to get a grip on what policies have what weight compared to others, and how other people come to decisions on what would be considered "reliable resources." In my opinion, neither of the two resources would even qualify under the rigorous requirements described in WP:BLP, and even if they did, they literally represent the personal opinions of 2 individuals. After reading the due weight article you referenced, what was your reasoning in considering these two opinions as relevant enough for consideration? I really want to get a fix on all of this in case I ever decide to get into even more controversial topics in the future, so that hopefully I can avoid some of the worse flame wars I have seen in the past, or at the very least, be able to keep myself from looking bad. Selfish, maybe, I know. :) Thanks again! Drake Maijstral 03:09, 15 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
I'm trying to help out at the BLP Noticeboard, and I saw your message there.
Reliable Sources ... Oh boy, you are diving in the deep end. See Wikipedia:Reliable sources to start with. About those two opinions: the claim that people have expressed those opinions is Reliably Sourced, even though the opinions themselves are not authoritative. There are other policies about whether we should include opinions like that, such as Wikipedia:Neutral point of view (especially the bit about "undue weight"). You'll notice that we have lots of rules here ... but they're mostly there to encapsulate the accumulated wisdom of long-time editors, and we'll cheerfully ignore them in the (rare) cases where they get in the way of producing a good encyclopedia.
Here's another thing: like most editors here, I don't try to make articles perfect, just better. Someone else is bound to come along and change what I wrote, and usually they'll improve it further. In other words, most of the time we tend to aim for incremental improvements. My change to that paragraph was just an incremental improvement, motivated by the clear "undue weight" problem. Maybe the paragraph should be deleted entirely — I don't know enough about that situation to judge. A lot of this stuff comes down to judgment calls, and it takes a while editing here to learn how to judge this stuff (I myself am no great expert). Maybe you'd like to start a discussion on Talk:Fred Phelps about deleting the rest of that paragraph?
Cheers, CWC 14:07, 15 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

re: Adoption Request

edit

Sounds fine - you certainly seem to have come to the right place by requesting adoption so quickly, and I'm sure that I can help. I have a couple of small questions:

  1. Which time zone do you edit from? What sorts of times are you online? I'm four hours ahead of UTC, and I tend to edit in the afternoons and late at night. It might be useful to be able to know to expect when you might need help.
  2. You say that you plan to edit controversial subjects. Is there any in particular? Some subjects have particularly sensitive spots, so it might be useful to get a general understanding of the subject before I gave particular advice.

Aside from that, you seem like you'll be a fine editor - I skimmed through your contributions and you seem to know the basics well. I'll be busy until later today, but I'll watchlist your talk page for now and be back later. If there's anything in particular you need to know, ask away: I have a decent understanding of most of what goes on around here (or at least I like to think so, it's a big site). :) Nihiltres(t.l) 22:32, 15 July 2007 (UTC) (cross-posted)Reply

I'm Central US (-4, I think. It's 6:27pm here atm) time. However, I have no set schedule because I have a flexible work schedule. I am generally online several hours a day, and can be very patient. Knowledge isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
As for the controversial subject issue - that's mainly for later, after I have more experience. However, some of the subjects that I am interested in (government, rights and freedoms, skepticism, etc) will probably lead me into controversy sooner, rather than later. Please don't think that this implies that I am here to look for a fight. If anything, I am looking for fights in the hope that I can bring a cool head and logic to the discussion.
Is it safe to add the Adopted by... tag to myself yet, or do you need to do it, or are you not actually officially adopting me? No big deal either way, but I'm trying to get my user page ready and would like to know whether to leave room for it. Thanks! Drake Maijstral 23:27, 15 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Don't worry about tags - yes, I have "officially" adopted you, but adoption is not so formal a process as to require them (that would be instruction creep). Process is only important for more serious issues like deletion, blocking, and other potentially controversial actions. As for time, that means I should be able to answer quickly sometimes - it'll depend a bit. As for controversial subjects, you have the right attitude, it seems - as long as you're calm, rational, and following NPOV, you probably aren't at risk for anything but flames from bigots and trolls. I would recommend reading about the three-revert rule, that's an issue that often comes up with controversial stuff, one which even admins (not me :D ) have been temporarily blocked for violating.
