Your file uploads

Hi EPVDB. As you can probably tell from the various notifications added to your user talk page, there are some issues with the files you've been uploading. Bascially, you cannot upload someone else's copyright work to Wikipedia under a free license without providing some kind of verifiable proof that they have given their clear and unambiguous consent to do so. It's not sufficient for Wikipedia's purposes for the original copyright holder to give you permission (verbally or written) to upload the file or to give permission Wikipedia to host the file; they essentially need to agree in adavance to allow anyone anywhere in the world to download the file at anytime for pretty much any purpose, including commercial use and derivative use. Moreover, once a file is released under such a license, it cannot be canceled after the fact if the original copyright holder has a change of heart. This is why Wikipedia requires a verification of the original copyright holders intent, and also why file uploads which cannot be verified to have received original copyright holder permission are deleted per WP:F11.

There are a few ways in which copyright holder permission can be verified (as explained in c:Commons:OTRS), but the most common seem to be to (1) provide a link to a website operated by the original copyright holder which shows that the file has been released under a free license accepted by Wikipedia, or (2) to have the original copyright holder send a permissions email to Wikimedia OTRS which clearly states they understand and agree to release the file under the terms of a free license accepted by Wikipedia. Simply adding a statement of intent to the file's page or a copyright disclaimer is not going to be enough. If you have any questions about this, you can ask them below or at WP:MCQ.

If you notice that one of your file uploads has been deleted, then it was probably done so for a good reason. If you not sure why, you can always quick on the file's page (deleted file pages are displayed as red links) and look which administrator deleted the file and why they deleted it. You can then post a message on the deleting administrator's user talk page as for further clarification if you want. The thing not to do is simply re-upload the same problem with the same issues because it will only be deleted again. Continuing to do stuff like this is going to eventually be seen as disruptive and may lead to an administrator stepping in and taking action as needed. A deleted file is not really gone forever, but rather only hidden from public view. A deleted file can be restored by an administrator at a later date if necessary once the issues which led to the file's deletion have been sorted out. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:35, 10 October 2018 (UTC)

Philippe Vandenberg

Hi again EPVDB. Pretty much every edit you have made on Wikipedia has been related to Philippe Vandenberg. Your very first edit was to create a Wikipedia article about him, and almost every edit since then has been to add more content to the article. There's nothing wrong with focusing on a single article or genre of articles per se, but it does kind of give the impression that there might be some connection between you and Vandenberg. If you are connected to Vandenberg or anyone/anything associated with him, such as his state, then there's a good chance the Wikipedia would consider you to have a conflict of interest with respect to anything written about him on Wikipedia. Wikipedia doesn't expressly prohibit conflict of interest editing, but it does highly discourage it because it can sometimes lead to some serious problems.

So, if you have such a conflict of interest (COI), I strongly suggest that you take a close look at Wikipedia:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide and try to follow that guideline as closely as possible. This is especially important in you are being paid or otherwise compensated for the edits you are making to the article. If you do, by chance, have a COI, there's no need to panic because there are plenty of editors who do and are able to contribute positively to Wikipedia by following the aforementioned guidelines. The best thing to do is to be as upfront as possible and not try to hope to sneak by unnoticed since that will only make matters worse if and when you start having problems with other editors.

Now, if none of this pertains to you, then you might want to take a look at them anyways because they also contain information which can even be helpful to non-COI editors; you might also want to try editing some other articles so that your contribution history doesn't appear to be so slanted towards Vandenberg. Expanding your Wikipedia horizons a bit will expose you to different types of edits and different ways relevant policies and guidelines are applied, and it will also help Wikipedia out as well since there are currenlty more that 6,000,000 articles and pretty much all of them can be improved in some way. In general, when we have an image with a particular name, we might upload a new version on top of the old version to reflect minor changes, such as revised cropping, removal of artifacts, cleaning up or other changes in which it is typically obvious that the new version is modified version of the original image.

As noted on my talk page, this image:

Involves the replacement of some painting with a photograph of an individual, and is not remotely the type of situation in which we normally upload one image over another.

I think it would've been better to upload the photograph with different name. One complication with uploading unrelated images on top of one another is that we normally have one file description page with the nation about the licensing, and having two unrelated images complicates the situation.

Removing image related templates from Philippe Vandenberg

While I can understand the desire to want to remove the {{deletable image-caption}} templates added to the files you uploaded and added to Philippe Vandenberg, doing so will not prevent the concerned files from being deleted. The only way to do such a thing (as explained above in #Your file uploads) will be for the licensing of each file to be properly verified. Without this verification, the files will be deleted and continue to be deleted each time they are re-uploaded with the same issue.

Moreover, removing the templates only it makes it more difficult for others to be aware of the issues with the corresponding files, which means someone who might be able to help might not be aware of the problems. These are just notification templates intended to categorize the files as needing attention so that others are made aware of the problem. If the files are ultimately deleted, then the syntax and caption will need to be removed according since there will be nothing left but a WP:REDLINK where the file was displayed. The template will make it easier for other editors and WP:BOTs who cleanup articles after files are deleted to know that Vandenberg article may need some similar cleanup as well. -- Marchjuly (talk) 23:23, 12 October 2018 (UTC)

Hello, EPVDB. Thank you for helping to build Wikipedia-- the world's largest free content encyclopedia. I'm sorry, but  Philippe Vandenberg Foundation has been deleted as meeting WP:CSD#G11. "This applies to pages that are exclusively promotional and would need to be fundamentally rewritten to conform with Wikipedia:NOTFORPROMOTION." These must be rewritten from scratch from "reliable, third party sources unconnected to the subject." See WP:RS.

Wikipedia:Identifying blatant advertising#Typical signs of blatant advertising contains information about content to avoid. For more information on content that may be perceived as promotional, click User:Dlohcierekim/promo. These are just rough guides. Pages can avoid all those pitfalls and still be glaringly obvious ad copy. Sometimes pages meeting WP:CSD#G11 give the appearance of an editor violating Wikipedia:Conflict of interest or WP:PAID. Please read and heed them if they apply to you. Please read Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations.

Wikipedia is an encyclopedia-- subjects must meet notability guidelines with reliable sources that are unconnected with the subject and providing verifiable information. Template:cite has templates you can use in citing your sources. Place the template {{references}} at the bottom of the page, and references cited in the text will appear there.

Hello, EPVDB. Thank you for helping to build Wikipedia. I'm sorry, but  Philippe Vandenberg has been deleted as meeting WP:CSD#G12. Wikipedia is the world's largest free content encyclopedia. As such, it cannot contain content copyrighted elsewhere. Such content must be completely rewritten and reformatted from scratch. Content published elsewhere copied into Wikipedia must state that it is public domain, licensed under the GFDL, or a creative commons license. That's the simple version. WP:copyright is a vastly complex issue, but if you keep to what I've written you are unlikely to run afoul.

Content copied and pasted from a subject's web page is generally unhelpful. It is generally written in a promotional tone and is not independent of the subject. All content must be cited from reliable sources that are unconnected with the subject and have a reputation for fact checking. Cheers, and happy editing.

Hello, Thank you for pointing me on my errors. With the pages I created I did not intend to harm any copyrights WP:CSD#G11, nor to solely promote the artist or the organisation WP:CSD#G11. I indeed work for the Philippe Vandenberg Foundation, a cultural organisation founded to support the oeuvre of the artist Philippe Vandenberg, and as a researcher I try to conduct my research objectively. Yet, I also understand the above mentioned objections to the pages I created.

I went trough all the usefull information posted here, thank you. As someone new I hope to interpret everything correctly. First, I want to emphasize that we are a cultural organisation, conducting art historical research in dialogue with scholars and the Ghent University. The results of these efforts we hope to share and we would love others to contribute to it. So, concerning the conflict of interests, I wondered if my articles could be interpreted to be of the hand of a cultural institution WP:CURATOR and if this would make any difference? Another question concerns the copyright claim. The texts I used for the Wikipedia page were written by me. Might it therefore be interpreted as a self-citation WP:SELFCITE or does this not suffice to be accepted?

It would be very helpful if you could advice me on these topics and learn me how I could improve the articles I created. Thank you very much in advance. EPVDB (talk) 19:29, 5 November 2018 (UTC)
