Always precious
Ten years ago, you were found precious. That's what you are, Christine, always. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:00, 30 July 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you today for Singin' and Swingin' and Gettin' Merry like Christmas, - so great to have for Christmas! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:20, 25 December 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks @Gerda Arendt, I always appreciate the honor of having one of the articles I've worked on make it to the main page, but you know the book, other than its title, has nothing to do with Christmas, right? ;) Merry merry to you too! DYK for 6.0 system
On 11 August 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article 6.0 system, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the 6.0 system of judging figure skating was replaced in 2004, as a response to the scandal during the pair skating competition at the 2002 Winter Olympics? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/6.0 system. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, 6.0 system), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Nice going with so many supporting editors at Tara's article. I've just listed Yuzuru Hanyu's Olympics article at FAC and thought to ask if you might be able to stop by with some support/oppose comments when you have some time. ErnestKrause (talk) 13:04, 5 September 2022 (UTC)
- @ErnestKrause, thanks for your kind words and support regarding the Lipinski bio. Wow, what a process it was! Yes of course I'll follow your process with Hanyu's FAC and will chime in soon. You and the Hanyu team have done stellar work; I so admire you for it. It's my hope that you'll have an easier time of it than I did, but once you get that FA star, it'll be so worth it. You should be already proud of yourselves; anything we do in the FS Wikiproject is crucial work towards filling a significant content gap here at WP, especially articles about non-Western skaters like Hanyu. You always have my support. Keep up the good work! Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 18:17, 5 September 2022 (UTC)
- The coordinators at FAC cannot seem to find if you are supporting or opposing the current Hanyu nomination; possibly you could add a comment fo support/oppose on the review page at FAC. Ther coordinators are requesting some indication from the reviewers within the next couple of days if its possible for you. ErnestKrause (talk) 12:35, 24 September 2022 (UTC)
- @ErnestKrause, my regrets that I dropped the ball. My only excuse is that I've been distracted by many things these days. I just went and supported it. You and your team have done so well with the Hanyu articles; you should you very proud. It seems that this FAC is suffering from the same fate as other complicated, technical, and long articles: it's so good, reviewers are afraid to review it! What that often means is that it goes unreviewed or under-reviewed for so long the coordintors are forced to close the nom. I personally also believe that figure skating articles have a difficult time of it at FAC due to the biases in WP we all know about. Stay calm and carry on, though, and all the aggrevation will be worth it. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 17:28, 24 September 2022 (UTC)

- Nice of you to stop by with the Support. Regarding your Tara nomination, it seems that some of editors there would like to see a References review; if you look through some of the older nominations you might be a able ping one of the editors who seems to specialize in doing a References check and maybe they would be able to do a References review for the Tara article. ErnestKrause (talk) 18:06, 24 September 2022 (UTC)
- @ErnestKrause, actually they want someone to check for close paraphrasing. Personally, I think that it's been adequately checked for it, but the reviewer who brought it up wants another reviewer to check for more of it. So that unfortunately means that it will probably fail. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 18:18, 24 September 2022 (UTC)
- Have you made a final decision about ansering Czar at FAC; I'm getting the feeling that he is actually on your side and if you do his edits then you might get both Kavanagh and him to sign on to support you. ErnestKrause (talk) 16:28, 20 October 2022 (UTC)
- @ErnestKrause, yes I've started addressing them, but I'm also watching the Skate America practice session on Peacock. Priorities, you know. ;) Thanks for the encouragement; with this FAC, it's muchly needed. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 17:04, 20 October 2022 (UTC)

Congratulations on your master's degree! I was surprised that it was on Wikipedia; somehow I thought you would have written about Maya Angelou. Changing the world is hard, but we can all make it a better place than we found it, and you have succeeded in that. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 20:15, 6 October 2022 (UTC) |
- @Hawkeye7, ah thanks so much for your kind words and encouragement. Writing about Wikipedia was just a natural outgrowth of my studies. Angelou featured prominently in my thesis, though, and I wrote at least one seminar paper about her. I'm hoping that I can continue "Wikipedia studies" soon. History of jumps in Figure Skating
Hello Christine, I had a look at the most recent version (10/17/2022) of the ISU Figure Skating Media Guide. I find it interesting that Adeliia Petrosian is mentioned on page 17 in the section first Quadruple Jumps in a (official?) document of the International Skating Union:
Women – Adeliia Petrosian (RUS) at the 2022 Russian National Championships (domestic competition) I think adding the jump of Petrosian to the table with a footnote and the media guide as a reference would not undermine the role of the ISU. Best regards Kallichore (talk) 00:05, 3 November 2022 (UTC)
- @Kallichore, yah I saw that too. I updated the Jumps article with the most recent version. It's interesting that they would do that, the first time since I've been tracking that document after 2018. It looks like, due to that change in the Media Guide, that it's something that we should do here. I'll go and take care of it now. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 15:41, 3 November 2022 (UTC)
- Thank a lot. PavelSI (talk) 21:35, 3 November 2022 (UTC)

World Junior Figure Skating Championships
Hello. I was wondering if you were interested in making articles to fill in the redlinks at World Junior Figure Skating Championships. There's many women figure skating and ice dancing medalists that are missing there. It would be nice to see them filled :) MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 03:45, 17 December 2022 (UTC)
- Hi @MrLinkinPark333, well yah, I am and think it'd be a marvelous idea, but unfortunately, I'm no Hermione Granger and don't have access to a Time-Turner, so I don't have the time. I do suggest, however, that you create them yourself, or better yet, make this suggestion on the WikiProject Figure Skating talk page. Perhaps others will take it on. Thank you for sharing these articles!
"You need to go read these chapters from Wikipedia @ 20: [1] and [2]. They will help you develop your editing philosophy, which is something I've been thinking about for the last few months and which I think is important for us who are writing about neglected topics like figure skating."
- I wanted to thank you for sharing these articles! I went through them, and it was a very interesting read. Regarding the improvement of diversity, I am very happy that Hanyu's biography was successfully elevated to level 4 vital article class. There are 95 articles about sports people labelled as LV4 vital here on Wikipedia, but Hanyu is only the third athlete from East Asia after Bruce Lee and Junko Tabei to make the list. There is not a single athlete from Korea or China yet. In other words – EA is still brutally underrepresented in many ways. Henni147 (talk) 18:52, 18 January 2023 (UTC)
- @Henni147, I commend and applaud you for the good work you're doing here. Since you've gone ahead and read those two chapters, you should read the whole book. It's so illuminating and thoughtful about our mission to make WP more diverse and comprehensive. I've come to the conclusion that figure skating is part of this mission. Keep up the good work, and let me know how I can assist. Speaking of, I've renominated Tara Lipinski for FAC (a unfortunate but marvelous example of some the things Vrana et.al talk about in WP @ 20) and Johnny Weir at GAC. To be honest, I'm apprehensive about getting Weir's bio assessed for obvious reasons, but he's too important not to. I appreciate your support. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 19:09, 18 January 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for the info! I will try to take a look at Tara Lipinski's article this weekend. Best wishes Henni147 (talk) 19:36, 18 January 2023 (UTC)
- Update: I left you a comment regarding GS as a source on the article's FAC nomination page.
- However, I'd like to make an addition here because it doesn't directly refer to Lipinski's article. You noted: "Many other sources at the Hanyu FAC, which passed with five supports and only lasted 38 days, some of which were in Japanese, were accepted AGF". Japan has currently the most thorough and accurate journalistic coverage on figure skating worldwide with numerous reliable sports newspapers, books, and magazines. Reliability must never be judged by the language of the source. The Google translating tool has reached a quality level that most Japanese online articles can be properly read with the provided machine translation, and checked for correct citation in Wikipedia articles. If we want to ensure diversity and shift away from the western-centric POV on Wikipedia, it should be highly encouraged to cite non-English sources in our articles as well.
- In fact, without the thorough media coverage in Japan, it would have been impossible for us to bring Hanyu's articles to this quality level. Ever since he has turned professional, there is complete media silence about him in America and Europe. The only western news platform that regularly updates about his pro career, is the official Olympics website based in Lausanne (and it's mostly Japanese author Shintaro Kano who writes the English articles). A fellow journalist who works with the German ARD (the main national broadcaster for ISU competitions) told me that they would like to report about Hanyu's solo shows, but it's not possible due to "legal issues". Interestingly, it's no problem to write about GIFT in Indonesia, the Philippines, Taiwan, Hongkong, or China. I don't know what this farce is all about, but it puts many things into perspective. Henni147 (talk) 09:36, 19 January 2023 (UTC)
- @Henni147, I must admit, I'm very jealous of the situation you get to enjoy as a contributor to Hanyu's articles. This is one of the few instances where contributing to non-English/Western topics is an advantage. There isn't that amount or qualify of content about American figure skaters because reporters in the U.S. don't report on them. I disagree, though, that topics that don't have that advantage can't be high-quality. Much of the problem is the reliablity policies in place on WP, which as WP @ 20 states, need to change in order to include more neglected topics. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 18:43, 20 January 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, no doubt that the quality of an article does not depend on the broadness of its coverage only. It is especially the organization of information (structure) and writing (content and language) that makes the difference between high and low quality. But yes, it is a big issue with Wikipedia that the notability and inclusion of content is determined by what is already published. This limits your possibilities in many aspects.
- If "The Digest" hadn't published that one article about Hanyu landing his 50th triple Axel in his 51st international senior SP in 2021, we wouldn't have been allowed to include that information, although it's an absolute mindboggling feat that may never be repeated again. To accomplish that, you must compete for at least 10 years at senior level with 5 intl. events per season, and must not miss a single 3A attempt in any SP, all getting positive GOE. Well, anyways.
- I hope to be able to review Lipinski's article tomorrow, and if all goes smoothly, I'm happy to give another support. Henni147 (talk) 19:21, 20 January 2023 (UTC)
- @Henni147, I appreciate that. I'm at U.S. Nationals in San Jose this week, so I'm hoping to see lots of quads, especially Ilia Malinin doing a 4A. Hanyu is in a whole other league, though. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 03:01, 24 January 2023 (UTC)

DYK nomination of Skating technique and influence of Johnny Weir
Hello! Your submission of Skating technique and influence of Johnny Weir at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. - Note: since the main Johnny Weir article just became a Good Article, it is eligible for DYK since I see no sign that it has previously been nominated. Why don't you nominate it? That way Johnny Weir will be able to be a DYK, through the original article rather than a fork of it. (You'll need to do the nomination within the next six days.) Thanks for your patience, and sorry about the technique article. BlueMoonset (talk) 06:36, 18 February 2023 (UTC)
Yuna Kim GA review
Hello,
I and @Artemisialufkin: were trying to prepare the Yuna Kim page for GA review. I would like someone to have a look at the page once before we send it to review, and also see if we can improve it/add anything else. Could you please have a look? You've helped me before, and I think you have a good process. Editor120918756 (talk) 16:29, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
- @Editor120918756 and @Artemisialufkin, I've read over the Kim bio. I was very impressed with it overall, especially with the work it must have taken you to get it to this point. I'm happy to do a pre-GA review on its talk page, but I thought that I'd do a general overview first, over here because what I'd like to say could be a bit inflammatory and I don't want anything to get in the way of what ultimately should be a successful GAN.
- I've found the peer review process for figure skating articles and bios very difficult lately. For example, the Tara Lipinski FAC process was a personally painful process for me. The Johnny Weir GAN was also more difficult than it needed to be. Figure skating articles and bios, like many articles about women and neglected populations of people and topics, are subject to a deeper level of scrutiny. My advice: you need to have a thick skin, pick your battles, and value WP's peer review system enough to put up with it. You also need to value the importance of these articles being promoted to higher levels of importance and excellence.
- I will tell you right now: the GA reviewer(s) (and I add the plural form because Weir's GAN, unlike most GANs, had two reviewers, hence the higher scrutiny) will tell you that Kim's bio is too long. In order for Weir's bio to pass to GA, it had to be gutted. I disagreed with it, but ultimately agreed to break off portions of the bio to new forked articles because I value the two things listed above. I'm starting to regret that. You need to decide if you want Kim's bio to go through the same thing and if the emotional labor you'll expend is worth that GA green circle. That being said, I'll get to the pre-review by the end of the weekend. Best, Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 22:05, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
- @Figureskatingfan Thanks for letting us know. I think personally I'd not like to organize more pages just to get a GA. I like finding out more about Yuna, and I think she deserves that GA for her work with the IOC, but ultimately it's still just wikipedia... My opinion though. Editor120918756 (talk) 05:57, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
- My main thought would be that, if required, we could split off the detailed results/records and create something similar to List of career achievements by Yuzuru Hanyu. I would be reluctant to split off any of the prose sections. Yuna's article currently has 44kB readable prose, so a split shouldn't be necessary at this stage according to the guidelines. Artemisia (talk) 11:11, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
- @Artemisialufkin: Oh, hi, I didn't get a notification. Yes, this is perfectly fine by me, if you want. Personally, I was thinking we should split the music section to a different article. I think for an athlete, it makes more sense to keep all career achievements on the main page. But I'll leave it up to you.
- We'll take that pre-review first, then, @Christine. Editor120918756 (talk) 11:33, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
- @Editor120918756, @Artemisialufkin: Despite all my doom and gloom, I do think that putting these articles through peer reviews is worthwhile, although I suggest going into them with your eyes wide open. Kim is certainly deserving of a high-quality article, with all the attention that garners. I also agree with Artemisialufkin; Kim's bio could benefit from forking off a few sections into new articles, if that's something you want to do and if it doesn't take anything away from the main article. At any rate, yes I will get to that pre-review in the next few days. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 17:49, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
- Hi all. I just split Nathan Chen's article to reduce size overall (not prose) List of career achievements by Nathan Chen. I can work on a list for Yuna, too, if you like? Let me know. :) MovieTalk101178 (talk) 11:05, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
- I'm cool with it.@User:MovieTalk101178
- @ArtemisialufkinNathan reminds me, is there an announcement for 2019 ATS we can include? It had several big names, like Nathan, Shoma, Javi, S/H, P/C, so it'd be cool to include it. Editor120918756 (talk) 13:10, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Editor120918756 We had already mentioned the 2019 ATS briefly in the show skating section. Is there a reason for emphasising the 2019 show, as opposed to the other editions? It has a strong line-up every year. Artemisia (talk) 22:04, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
- I do not see a mention of all that skate 2019 in the show skating section, beyond which gala programs she'd skated that season. I think we should mention the skaters it pulls and commercial success if we can find it.@Artemisialufkin 2018 and 2019 happened after a gap of four years with her skating, so it'd be interesting.
- Hi all. I just split Nathan Chen's article to reduce size overall (not prose) List of career achievements by Nathan Chen. I can work on a list for Yuna, too, if you like? Let me know. :) MovieTalk101178 (talk) 11:05, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Figureskatingfan Thanks for letting us know. I think personally I'd not like to organize more pages just to get a GA. I like finding out more about Yuna, and I think she deserves that GA for her work with the IOC, but ultimately it's still just wikipedia... My opinion though.
