editHi Anna, how do I create the indents for each conversation? Am I doing this right? Seems tedious right now :) Let me know, thanks for the help! Football1502 (talk) 03:12, 25 January 2011 (UTC) Football11502

TC policies
editHi Anna, I will try to do the IRC chat tomorrow. What time would work for you so that we could try and connect? Also I remember you saying you don't know much about Public Policy for Telecom. What information do you know? Thanks! Football1502 (talk) 02:53, 31 January 2011 (UTC) Football1502
- Hello Football (Alison). IRC sounds great. I am 13 hours ahead of you, but that doesn't matter much as I am on and offline at odd times. If you want to schedule an exact time, let me know and I will try to confirm. Otherwise, feel free to post on my talk page when you are ready to IRC. That way, I will be alerted by the orange bar that says I have a message, and will respond right away.
- I know the basics of public policy for telecom, and have been following the net neutrality matter for quite a while. Best, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 03:33, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
- So sorry about today, was extremely busy. Perhaps you can help me out now. I'm working on analysing an entry on local number portability. As an expert, do you think the article is done well? Football1502 (talk) 02:12, 1 February 2011 (UTC) Football1502
- I'm just having a look at it now. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 02:17, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
- Okay. After a fairly quick ten-minute read, here are my comments:
- Formatting and general cleanup is needed.
- A number of non-encyclopedic words can be replaced.
- Some inline external links can be made into references.
- The article does not seem controversial, so is not likely to have POV (point of view) issues.
- It seems laid out in a sensible way.
- The lead appears to summarize the body.
- Although it is somewhat technical, and not a subject I am familiar with, it seems to be fairly well-organized and comprehensive.
- Okay. After a fairly quick ten-minute read, here are my comments:
- What are your thoughts? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 02:30, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
- Oh nice. Good points. It seems to follow the format fairly well. Now that you mention it, it does seems to be a little rusty- like it was difficult to create or something. I agree with the POV issue. It has many references to the FCC for the US which helps. Plus I really like the number of countries they tried to cover. Shows extensive research. I think it's interesting that there is a Telephone Number Portability page that links back to the page along with MNP. Football1502 (talk) 03:22, 1 February 2011 (UTC) Football1502
Leasing and regulation
editHi Anna! I hope you are still with me! It is hard to keep up these pages. I was wondering if you could assist me. Think I need to update my user page, plus are you at all familiar with network infrastructure regulations? What are some things I could add to my page? Football1502 (talk) 01:36, 11 February 2011 (UTC) Football1502
- Hi there. Of course I'm still with you. :)
- Communicating with other editors
- When starting a new post (like this one), it's a good idea to start it on the addressee's talk page. When adding to a thread on your talk page, it's good to let the other party know that you have written something by pasting this: on her/his talk page.
{{talkback|Football1502}}
- Your user page:
- You can add anything you like to your userpage. You can go to another editor's userpage, click edit, and see how the code is formatted. If you see something you like, copy it and paste it onto your userpage. (If it is a nicely-presented userpage, and you want to grab the whole thing, it's polite to ask first.)
- Three things that might be good:
- Fun stuff like images or Wikipedia:Userboxes
- Useful links to pages related to what you are working on
- Tools (see what others use)
- Network infrastructure regulations
- I am not familiar with that subject, but can read up. How can I help with that?
- Don't forget, when you reply to this thread, paste the talkback thingy on my talkpage so I am alerted. Best wishes. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 02:16, 11 February 2011 (UTC)
How to add references
editHope this helps:
1. Find a good site that supports the content you wish to reference. For example: "Apples grow on trees." from www.apples.com/apple-trees.html
2. Go to the article that has the text you wish to reference.
3. Click "edit this page" and go to that part.
4. At the end of the sentence or passage (after the comma or period) paste in: <ref>www.apples.com/apple-trees.html</ref>
5. Click save.
Examine Pigeon pie by clicking edit to see how it is done.
That's the simplest way. You can make more detailed references if you like, but start with that. I will help further in another post.
A handy tool
editThis tool is great for automatically fixing up references. You simply enter the article name, and click "run reflinks".
You can practice on this article: Choriaster granulatus
First, look at the references at the bottom. See how there are duplicates? See how they are just bare urls? Now, run reflinks and see the difference. A very handy tool. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 19:22, 20 February 2011 (UTC)

Broadband open access - Anna's comments
editWonderful!! A few tweaks, bits of advice, and comments:
- I see a blue link that looks like this: the U.S.. It might be best as "the U.S.".
- TCI goes to a disambiguation page. Go there and see what the right link should be.
- You have lots of blue links, and that's good.
- No space is needed between the text and the reference. Edit the page and search for occurrences of . < and then remove the space so it looks like .<
- "...How will they earn money if the entire country is provided internet through the leading companies?..." This is a question, and should be expressed in a non-interrogative way. Plus, Internet needs a capital I and it is grammatically strange.
- Search the aricle for double line spaces and make them single.
- You can break the article up into section if you like.
- One of the references is to another Wikiarticle. Best is to go to that article and find the source of the info you are using, and use that reference instead.
- See also section goes above references section. Also, it should be used for links to other Wikipedia articles that are related to the subject.
Well done. Good writing, and well-proofread. If you have any questions, just ask. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 15:12, 22 February 2011 (UTC)
Feedback by Johannes M. Bauer
editThe additions to the broadband open access entry add substance to the existing text. The policy debate on broadband open access can be conducted from a narrow or a broad perspective.
More narrowly construed, it is about the obligation of cable systems to provide open access to their systems. This is a considerable issue, as cable companies are historically considered private contract carriers that are not subject to non-discrimination requirements (as telephone companies, that were historically treated as common carriers, were until 2005). During the early days of broadband, it was decided by the FCC (and upheld by the US Supreme Court) that cable systems should not be subject to mandatory open access requirements.
In a broader perspective, the debate is about the openness of all network platforms. This issues is addressed in the network neutrality debate. The wireless broadband initiative you mention can be seen in this light, but it is probably more directly motivated by expanding access to broadband (rather than focussed on the openness issue, which addresses whether service providers have to make their platforms openly accessible to third parties).
Nice job, though, overall.--JMBauer (talk) 23:09, 28 February 2011 (UTC)
It looks great!! I will give it a read very soon. Something just came up off-wiki. Well done! Best, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 06:40, 25 April 2011 (UTC)
Anna's comments on Policies Promoting Wireless Broadband
editWow. That's a meaty article! You've done a great job. No need to apologize for not keeping in touch. You are a busy student.
I don't think you need to skim it back at all. It's a big subject. Here are some comments and suggestions:
- Move the article to "Policies promoting wireless broadband" (lower case except for first letter of first word)
- Shorten the lead. It should be a definition of the subject, and a summary of the sections below. (Caution: Doing this will drive you crazy and break your heart. Leave that till last.)
- Avoid "So and so states...." in the lead. The views of others should be elsewhere in the article.
- Some terms don't need linking, such as industry. (Although I do like lots of blue in articles. I feel that too many is better than too few.)
- Link MHz
- "(whitehouse.gov)" doesn't need to be there
- Section titles all lower case except for first letter of first word
- Consider moving cost section below Technology & Infrastructure
- Here are some grammar issues or simply strings that could be replaced with better wording (Take my suggestions here with a grain of salt. Your judgement may be better.):
- "...critical part of our lives..." replace critical with other word
- "...commit to the support the development..."
- & --> and
- President Barack Obama has continued --> President Barack Obama is continuing
- "...There are many different factors involved many times..."
- 10 times --> ten times
- "...The national wireless network requires no different..."
- "...It has so far been non-established..." (yet to be established?)
- "...any other form of security threats..." --> threat
- "...and to assist with public safety officers having the best, state-of-the-art technology and communications available..."
- "...public safety communication --> public safety communications
- "...seems to be working well for us...." (us refers to US citizens but Wikipedia is international)
- "...More and more users are obtaining access to the internet and are able to access it from more wireless devices..."
- "...national wireless broadband plan come into play..." --> ...into effect
- Consider creating subsections to prevent the "wall of text" appearance.
- Create a See also section. There are lots of link that you can add there. See related articles for ideas.
- Perhaps dig up some charts and tables. All US Federal government images are public domain. If you need help uploading them, just ask.
- After your last major copy edit, run the whole article through http://toolserver.org/~dispenser/view/Reflinks to automatically format and consolidate the references.
- I spot checked for close paraphrase of sources, and that looks fine.
- Add these categories to the bottom, and any others you think are applicable:
[[Category:Internet access]], [[Category:Computer law]]
- Add this banner to the discussion page, and any others you think are applicable:
{{WP Internet|class=C|importance=mid}}
- The writing is clear, and although I don't know much about the subject, it looks very comprehensive. I've learned a lot reading your article. I'm very impressed! Of my three mentees, you are the one who has really put in a great effort. Good job. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 13:26, 25 April 2011 (UTC)
- Link your new article to "See also" sections in other articles. Also, think where this topic might be mentioned, go to those articles, and link it. This also draws attention to your article so others can come and improve it. Also, if you have a reason to post the wikiprojects related to the article, others will notice the article and improve it. Well done again
editGood morning. Well done handling the "DYK 98%" issue. As you can see, another editor kindly handled the references. There are still issues with the article to work on, but it looks miles better. If you like, I can give it a whirl, and make some edits here and there. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 00:19, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
RE: "...another editor kindly handled the references...": He didn't notice the talk page request to leave the references, and spent 30 minutes doing them by hand (as the reflinks program couldn't handle them), and so didn't want to undo them. That's understandably. I hope they're not cluttering up the visual layout when you edit. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 00:23, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
- Wow fantastic Thank you. Yes, that looks so much better. Absolutely, by all means edit as you like. I'd love to read what you would change. Again thank you so much. No, I wasn't sure what they were at first, but figured it out. I was wondering about the program. I tried to run it through and it just sat for about an hour before I closed out of it. I will check back probably tomorrow to see if you have made any changed. Again thanks so much for your help Anna! It's nice to have someone walking me through this. Article name
editI've just been going over the article. After really giving it, and the sources, a very good read, (something I didn't do before), and trying to copy edit it, I kept running into a problem. The wording has to keep referring to the policies, and not the plan itself.
What is the article about, as it appears today? The plan. The policies are enforcement or support.
I think it might be best to call the article National Wireless Initiative. After all, that's really what the article is about.
This may make it a lot easier to copy edit, and make it all come together. What do you think? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 01:53, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
- The article is about the policies promoting it. I had to find information on how current policies were impacting it, what new ones were being created. I agree, a lot of it is about the initiative, I put that to explain why these policies were in place or needed. Let me think about it, since this is a class project, the title is more important to me right now : ) Football1502 (talk) 16:33, 2 May 2011 (UTC) Football1502
- Okay. No problem. Let's stick with the current name. I'll work around the wording. Sorry I didn't edit it yet. I was waiting to hear what you had to say. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 16:51, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
The "inuse" template
editI forgot to remove it yesterday. Sorry about that. I'm trying to make small copy edits, but don't quite have my thinking cap on. More coffee! :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 02:15, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
- Hi Anna! I haven't read the article yet. Just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your help on this project. It was a hit and I made sure to mention you in class. I can make edits until Friday. How do you think it looks? Let me know and thanks again! Football1502 (talk) 19:04, 4 May 2011 (UTC) Football1502
Peer Review Ben
editI just read your article and I really enjoyed the structure you used. You tried to cover every aspect on the subject. Everything is well referenced, maybe you could use more links to other wikipedia entries. Maybe add some specific new technologies or link to other article because it is hard to picture exactly what you mean. I don't really understand why network neutrality came at the end of the article but that's just me... And finally I think the pros and cons are a good idea but it needs more explication on what they really apply to. But good job!! Rick.james850 (talk) 15:26, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
DYK for Policies promoting wireless broadband
editOn 6 May 2011, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Policies promoting wireless broadband, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that policies promoting wireless broadband plan to bring the Internet to 98% of Americans? You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |
