Talk:Wounded Knee Massacre

Oh my YES that page needed archiving! I was wondering if you have any objections to my changing the archiving-code to one that uses days instead of the form you just placed there? Something like...
{{User:MiszaBot/config |archiveheader = {{aan}} |maxarchivesize = 100K |counter = 12 |minthreadsleft = 4 |algo = old(30d) |archive = Talk:Wounded Knee Massacre/Archive %(counter)d }} {{Auto archiving notice|bot=MiszaBot I |age= |units= 30 days}}
Since the article seems to attract a fair amount of first-time editors/readers I was thinking the "days" notice and this alternate archiving-style would be easier for inexperienced editors/casual readers to understand. Shearonink (talk) 19:41, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

No problem at all. I just picked the one I usually use.--Jim in Georgia Contribs Talk 20:05, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
Thank you for your courtesy. I've seen that style before (am more familiar with the one above) but with its age and size parameters I always have to stop and think "Now....what unit is ClueBot referring to here...minutes... and bytes?..." Cheers, Shearonink (talk) 20:30, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

State of Franklin

Do you think you the dates for the capitals should be removed on the article? --ACase0000 (talk) 14:30, 6 September 2016 (UTC)

No, I think they should be verified.--Jim in Georgia Contribs Talk 14:56, 6 September 2016 (UTC)

Talk revision

This morning you reverted my entry on Main/Talk. (*https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:Main_Page&oldid=prev&diff=765977132*) I merely meant it as a joke in reference to the listing of Geronimo. I kept it vague so that anyone who was like "huh?" would go back and read OTD. My apologies. - NsTaGaTr (Talk) 15:17, 17 February 2017 (UTC)

March Madness 2017

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

For the Milhist co-ordinators. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) & MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 07:24, 26 February 2017 (UTC)

Meehan

There is no need to remove all mention of him from Wikipedia. Just remove the brackets from the Wikilink since the redlink is no longer a likely article candidate. VQuakr (talk) 20:24, 3 March 2017 (UTC)

I didn't remove every occurrence of his name. If one or more needs to be reverted, go for it. BTW, this is a virtual copy of the Wikipedia page.--Jim in Georgia Contribs Talk 21:15, 3 March 2017 (UTC)
Ah, my sample size was off: as the few of these that were on my watchlist happened to be removals. Thanks for the clarification! I updated the pages on Welsh and Sobel to still mention Meehan, as the command changes for those two were more related than the other pages. VQuakr (talk) 02:42, 4 March 2017 (UTC)

Easy Company Commanders

Dick Winters in his autobiography makes clear references to the chain of command of Easy Company. At no point was an “unnamed officer” mentioned. Even the timeline doesn’t fit. If Winters gets moved on October 9th, Heyliger is in temporary command and gets shot on October 31st. When would have this mysterious officer been in charge? I think you are misreading BoB.

“I moved to Battalion on October 9th to assume my new duties as Battalion Executive Officer to Lt. Col Strayer …. First Lieutenant Fred Heyliger, temporarily in command of the company served as patrol leader…..Heyliger did an absolutely superb job and all Allied soldier were safely returned to friendly lines on the night of October 22….. On October 31, I called 1st Lieutenant Heyliger on the telephone and suggest that at night two us make an inspection of Easy Company… “Beyond of Brothers”, Maj. Dick Winters, pg 151-152

“Of the six officers who commanded Easy Company, since its activation at Toccoa – Sobel, Meehan, myself, Heliger, Dike, and now Spiers – “Sparky” Speirs commanded the company longer than any of his predecessors.” “Beyond of Brothers”, Maj. Dick Winters, pg 188 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Barneygumble (talkcontribs) 20:11, 23 March 2017 (UTC)

I don't have a copy of Winters' book,. but I'll accept you quotes. What we seem to have is a disagreement between Ambrose and Winters. Perhaps we could treat one of the two parenthetically.--Jim in Georgia Contribs Talk 20:15, 23 March 2017 (UTC)

WP:SOLDIER is an essay

WP:SOLDIER is an essay. Notability essays are very useful for establishing consistent criteria for subjects that may fall under WP:MILL, but they can't be applied in a vacuum. WP:BASIC is the applicable guideline that should be being considered for BoB biographies, because the depth of coverage is (on average) deeper than for your average WWII biography and a given article is likely going to meet BASIC before it meets the prescriptive criteria at SOLDIER. This isn't a complaint about the nomination at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/William Kiehn or similar, but a broader suggestion on how these articles should be evaluated and their AfD nominations, if applicable, communicated. VQuakr (talk) 19:43, 23 March 2017 (UTC)

True, but it's been accepted by the Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history community for some time. When I made my first nom for deletion -- that was for Meehan, btw -- one of the responses was that he was famous because he had been in a TV series.--Jim in Georgia Contribs Talk 19:56, 23 March 2017 (UTC)
Acceptance by a Wikiproject is not relevant. This is specifically addressed at WP:CONLIMITED: For instance, unless they can convince the broader community that such action is right, participants in a WikiProject cannot decide that some generally accepted policy or guideline does not apply to articles within its scope. The specific example you give of a poor "keep" reasoning can be more effectively argued against in the context of WP:BASIC. VQuakr (talk) 20:48, 23 March 2017 (UTC)
That requires the rest of the community to show up. In the absence of their doing so, the judgment of those who did render an opinion is no less valid. Non-project members also have an option to render an opinion on the essay.--Jim in Georgia Contribs Talk 22:05, 23 March 2017 (UTC)

ANI Experiences survey

The Wikimedia Foundation Community health initiative (led by the Safety and Support and Anti-Harassment Tools team) is conducting a survey for en.wikipedia contributors on their experience and satisfaction level with the Administrator’s Noticeboard/Incidents. This survey will be integral to gathering information about how this noticeboard works - which problems it deals with well, and which problems it struggles with.

The survey should take 10-20 minutes to answer, and your individual responses will not be made public. The survey is delivered through Google Forms. The privacy policy for the survey describes how and when Wikimedia collects, uses, and shares the information we receive from survey participants and can be found here:

If you would like to take this survey, please sign up on this page, and a link for the survey will be mailed to you via Special:Emailuser.

Please be aware this survey will close Friday, Dec. 8 at 23:00 UTC.

2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting

As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. The co-ordinators invite all project members to get involved by nominating any editor they feel merits recognition for their contributions to the project. Nominations for both awards are open between 00:01 on 2 December 2017 and 23:59 on 15 December 2017. After this, a 14-day voting period will follow commencing at 00:01 on 16 December 2017. Nominations and voting will take place on the main project talkpage: here and here. Thank you for your time. For the co-ordinators, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 08:36, 8 December 2017 (UTC)

User group for Military Historians

Greetings,

"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Wikipedia Military Historians.

Greetings. I see that you created the NAV BOX for "Template:Artillery Regiments (United States)". I've added some regiments to the box, but it doesn't seem to be updating across wiki. Is there some trick besides choosing the "Edit" in the template and editing the box? Thanks in advance. 82redleg (talk) 20:28, 28 December 2017 (UTC)

@82redleg:, you probably have to wait for WP to do one of its regular sweeps. In then meantime, I think it'll update on any article you save.--Georgia Army Vet Contribs Talk 21:27, 28 December 2017 (UTC)
Thanks. I'll check in a couple of days, then. I've been doing quite a bit of work on US Army Field Artillery units- particularly the ARNG right now. Some are out there, but not categorized; some just don't exist. I created a list page- still a work in progress- where I'm trying to list all of the US Army (and USMC, but they only have a few) FA units. 82redleg (talk) 22:04, 28 December 2017 (UTC)
It shouldn't take a couple of days. I changed another template this morning and it has already taken. I think Template:Artillery Regiments (United States) has updated, too. I'm showing the 121st. --Georgia Army Vet Contribs Talk 22:34, 28 December 2017 (UTC)

January 2018

Hello. Your recent edit to Lake Orion High School appears to have added the name of a non-notable entity to a list that normally includes only notable entries. In general, a person, organization or product added to a list should have a pre-existing article before being added to most lists. If you wish to create such an article, please first confirm that the subject qualifies for a separate, stand-alone article according to Wikipedia's notability guideline. To be on a notable alumni list, a person needs to have or qualify to have a biographical article about them on Wikipedia. If a person's name is redirected to an article about a group they are part of, that's pretty solid evidence that they themselves are not notable by our policy. Being part of a notable group does not in itself show notability. See INHERIT John from Idegon (talk) 01:20, 9 January 2018 (UTC)

Please pay attention. I did not add her name; it was already there. I corrected an error in the citation.--Georgia Army Vet Contribs Talk 01:23, 9 January 2018 (UTC)
I see that now, and removed the entire entry. Sorry. John from Idegon (talk) 04:16, 9 January 2018 (UTC)

Bronze Star

Hey, just wanted to give you a heads up I found more citations for the bronze star medal. It's not awarded by DOD (that was my bad) but rather by the military departments, which I added with citations. I wasn't able to find anything about it being awarded by the Public Health Service, but if you had any information or news articles on that I'd really appreciate if you could send those my way so I can find the regulation documents! Quick question

Hi, I noticed on your user page it says you're 70+. Just curious about how you became interested in Wikipedia and how you learned about it in the first place. I've worked with older folks most of my life and none of them have a nice thing to say about Wikipedia, or some of them just don't know about it, so that is why I'm curious. This question is genuine and is not meant to be rude. By the way, thank you for your service. SpartaN (talk) 00:49, 22 January 2018 (UTC)

I'm also a retired database developer and back when LOST was on I got involved in the Lostpedia project (before it was on Wikia). Working on WP helps keeps my brain active; it also cuts into my recreational reading time. Life's a trade-off. <grin> It was a privilege to serve.--Georgia Army Vet Contribs Talk 01:13, 22 January 2018 (UTC)

That user is fairly active on other military articles the last few months, I think about medals or something, but those are articles I don't deal with. Interesting. So, I'll just leave Garlin to you. — Maile (talk) 01:43, 26 January 2018 (UTC)
Okay, I'll keep an eye on it.--Georgia Army Vet Contribs Talk 01:44, 26 January 2018 (UTC)
OK. Posted on that talk page. — Maile (talk) 19:58, 9 February 2018 (UTC)
  • Hey, I made an edit and you disagreed with it and undid it. No big deal. I happen to think that biographical articles shouldn’t be considered military articles under the current wording of the guideline. That’s my opinion. But saying I have “One answer for dates” sounds like an insult, a slight, and an attempt to discredit my opinion. It’s okay to disagree. We all have opinions on how things should be done and how guidelines should be interpreted. I’ll just sit back and wait until consensus changes on this matter. Consensus can change and just because an article is listed as GA, does not mean that articles cannot be changed or even improved.JOJ Hutton 20:18, 9 February 2018 (UTC)

Robert Hanson (United States Army Air Forces)

I think you should look into Robert Hanson (United States Army Air Forces) and see if he passes notability guidelines. I would do it myself, but I have been limited to one deletion nomination every 24 hours, and I did another last evening.John Pack Lambert (talk) 16:17, 2 March 2018 (UTC)

Thanks. Kind of looks like WP:NOTINHERITED applies. Since I did one yesterday, I'ii probably wait a couple of days.--Georgia Army Vet Contribs Talk 20:01, 2 March 2018 (UTC)

Regarding my comment at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/William Kiehn‎ and BoB AfDs more generally

Hello,

I have a list of BoB "franchise" individuals whose AfDs I am pretty sure I would not oppose. I thought I would pass it along so that if you are still planning on more AfDs, the process goes more smoothly. You can, of course, not propose an individual in this list, propose an individual not in this list, or whatever you like. But since I made such a list for myself, I thought it would be helpful for you:

Thomas Peacock (United States Army officer) - Edward Shames - Harry Welsh - Floyd Talbert - James Alley - Charles E. Grant - John Martin (soldier) - Denver Randleman - Terrence C. Harris - Robert Wynn (soldier) - Warren Muck - Eugene Roe - George Luz - Donald Hoobler - Alex Penkala - Joseph Lesniewski - Eugene E. Jackson - Roderick Strohl - Herman Hanson - Robert Rader - Gordon Carson - Roderick Bain

I did not do WP:BEFORE on any of these, and if I saw them at AfD, I would likely still look them up (particularly at Wikipedia:Newspapers.com, which I love having) and if I found something might oppose their deletion. I hope you receive this list in friendliness. Best, Smmurphy(Talk) 18:41, 23 March 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for the note; I know we've been in opposition for some of this. The names seem pretty close to my thoughts. My "project list" is at User:Gaarmyvet/sandbox#Band_of_Brothers. Guys who sadly never made it home (Penkala, et. al.) are candidates. Others might be considered except for the way they were treated. Norman Dike, imho, was a hatchet job (I do have a time investment there). I think there's more to Herbert Sobel than meets the eye; somehow he made lieutenant colonel (not WP:SOLDIER, but...) I may need to try for access to Wikipedia:Newspapers.com. Please do look up anyone I propose; I'm not trying to play WP:OWNER here. I was editing Robert Burr Smith earlier. "He was famous for his service for Easy..." — not really. I'll stay in touch.--Jim in Georgia Contribs Talk 19:21, 23 March 2017 (UTC)
That is great. It is pretty clear to me that you are doing good work. Let me know if I can be of any help, especially with research. Do you have access to Wikipedia:Fold3? I assumed you did, but then realized you might not. I'm not sure how much of the stuff on Fold3 isn't available elsewhere, and a lot of the material are in the form of primary sources, but it is often useful. Primary sources can, with care, be used for details even if they are not very good for establishing notability. Smmurphy(Talk) 19:50, 23 March 2017 (UTC)
Not at this time. I had access to Wikipedia:MUSE but the page I was working on kind of went inactive. If my MUSE access is still active, I have no idea what my password was. I've seen Fold3 show up on some searches.--Jim in Georgia Contribs Talk 20:32, 23 March 2017 (UTC)
I just wanted to follow up to thank you for your continued work on these. I !voted against delete on the most recent one Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Alton More, but only barely and we'll see what the consensus is. Most importantly, I want to thank you again for stringing these out. Expressing a bit of exasperation, User:Hawkeye7 rightfully asked how many more of these there are, but I do appreciate the AfD submissions coming at a reasonable rate so I have time to try to fix them up. Also, I don't want to presume, but if you think a AfD case (for any US historical biography) is borderline enough, feel free to drop me a line and if I think the subject shouldn't go to AfD I'll try to add refs and content. Smmurphy(Talk) 16:53, 27 November 2017 (UTC)
Thanks, I appreciate your work, even when we disagree. The answer on how many more is about fifteen; I had answered Hawkeye7 on his talk page but he hasn't said anything yet; he's a busy guy I think. I will keep you in mind; your Newspaper queries seem to turn up more results than do mine.--Georgia Army Vet Contribs Talk 20:05, 27 November 2017 (UTC)
I do a lot of my content creation with that resource and am pretty used to the tricks. Thanks for the link to your userspace page; as I have the time, I'll try to look some of those over. Smmurphy(Talk) 02:30, 28 November 2017 (UTC)
Looking at your sandbox, do you really only have 3/4 more BoB figures to consider for AfD? Congratulations on your work! Even if I'm not fully on board with the project, you're effort and the quality of your contributions to the articles (even those which have been deleted) have been impressive and enjoyable to follow. I looked at the forthcoming ones and saw that Guth has a good deal of coverage at newspapers.com, so I went ahead and contributed to the article (feel free to cleanup and, if you think useful, to nominate for discussion). Right now, I think I would !vote keep or weak keep at his AfD if it were nominated. Tipper also has a lot of results at newspapers.com, but they are almost all his obituary. I'm not sure how I feel about obituaries of long-lived veterans being used for judgement of suitability. I guess I see living a long time as somewhat independent of being a part of the BoB-verse, and thus I'm on the fence if/how I'd !vote for him. I've already commented on the Blithe AfD, and I'm not sure about a potential Lyall AfD, but I didn't find enough on him at newspapers.com to want to add anything to the article. Smmurphy(Talk) 22:29, 12 March 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for the note. It's almost over, at least for now. I may revisit some of the "no consensus" pages but not until next year. I'll definitely take a look at what you've added. Lyall's escape in what was Indochina would be a lot more interesting if there was some relationship to the global flow of events. Obituaries have always been a little iffy to me because of a kind of "COI" from family members who want the deceased to be remembered well. When I cited Norman Dike's obits so often, I kept waiting for someone to tell me I'd wandered off the reservation. Overcome by events since that AfD passed! I thought Blithe would be simpler; too many of those books say the same stuff.<sigh>--Georgia Army Vet Contribs Talk 00:55, 13 March 2018 (UTC)
Sounds good. I'll keep an eye out. Best, Smmurphy(Talk) 01:29, 13 March 2018 (UTC)

Garlin Murl Conner

Hi again, Gaarmyvet. Just wanted to give you a heads up. As I write this, it hasn't been officially announced, but apparently the President called Mrs. Conner yesterday and awarded Lt. Conner the Medal of Honor. This was posted by family members on Facebook. I predict there will certainly be some new interest in the WP article with a possible deluge of new edits! Thanks for the note.--Georgia Army Vet Contribs Talk 20:23, 27 March 2018 (UTC)

I noticed that you have replaced a number of cite templates that used the asin parameter to instead use Amazon URLs. I don't understand why you are doing this. Can you explain? Daask (talk) 00:30, 20 April 2018 (UTC)

Becasuse the asin parameter often looks like an isbn and Wikipedia has a category that traps these errors.--Georgia Army Vet Contribs Talk 00:42, 20 April 2018 (UTC)
@Gaarmyvet: I'm afraid I still don't understand. For example, looking at the page history of African-American culture, I don't see anything wrong with Citation bot, and I don't understand your edits and edit summaries. Daask (talk) 00:53, 24 April 2018 (UTC)
Oh, I think I figured out what is going on. It looks like you're trying to empty Category:CS1 maint: ASIN uses ISBN. Thanks for your effort to do some of this kind of background maintenance for Wikipedia. However, I think I'd like to suggest different actions:
  1. If an ASIN is an ISBN, then it should be marked as such, and no ASIN or URL given, contrary to what you did here, for example.
  2. If ISBN is given, then the ASIN should just be removed, not converted to a URL, as described at Category:CS1 maint: ASIN uses ISBN, contrary to what you did here, for example.
  3. Some ASINs aren't ISBNs, and I think it is best to leave them as ASINs and not convert them to URLs, as someone reverted you here, for example.
I don't agree with the reversions but I don't think it's worth my effort to fight therm. See Category:CS1 maint: ASIN uses ISBN--Georgia Army Vet Contribs Talk 02:05, 24 April 2018 (UTC)
Do you disagree? Is there something I'm missing? Daask (talk) 01:56, 24 April 2018 (UTC)
Since the ASIN leads to the Amazon site, I'm not sure I understand the problem.--Georgia Army Vet Contribs Talk 02:02, 24 April 2018 (UTC)

I've given up doing anything on CS1 maintenance; there are too many prima donnas.--Georgia Army Vet Contribs Talk 02:07, 24 April 2018 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

  The Original Barnstar
Nicely done. I think that it covers what I understand of the early history very well.

The lineage of early artillery units lives on in the current ADA, too- because much of the early artillery turned into Coast Artillery, which turned into ADA. 82redleg (talk) 00:56, 4 May 2018 (UTC)

Artillery

WOW!! The sandbox page you sent me looks good. Are you going to make it a stand along page, or incorporate it into the Field Artillery Branch (United States) article? 82redleg (talk)

Probably stand-alone, something like "Early U.S. Artillery formations." I just added the headline for the Legion last night because there's disagreement about whether the Battalion of Artillery went away or not. I'm a long way from being satisfied with the Legacy section.--Georgia Army Vet Contribs Talk 16:15, 22 April 2018 (UTC)
