Help with linting tools

edit

thanks for the cleanup help [1] . Could you recommend good linting tools? I've been looking for better linting tools to help with editing, especially with citations, wikitext formatting . i appreciate the help Tonymetz 💬 16:24, 15 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Tonymetz Thanks for the thanks. :) Unfortunately I may not be able to help you too much with these areas. I'm pretty new at this and have mostly been fixing page-breaking errors found via LintErrors, Firefly Tools, and Check Wikipedia. These are geared toward cleaning up after the fact rather than helping in the process of editing. You may be able to find something interesting at Linter and WikiProject Check Wikipedia (though I'm pretty sure you've looked there already). Installing lintHint and using it in combination with ExpandTemplates might help, but again, these are aimed at more serious errors. Sorry I don't have more to offer. (In the case that brought you here, I just accidentally noticed the ref was already there when I was double-checking the page after dealing with the lint error.) I could not for my life figure out how to do, what you did. Thanks Creuzbourg (talk) 19:50, 28 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

(For the uninitiated, this is about cleanup notices in Indian police Ranks and Insignia templates.)
@Creuzbourg You're welcome. Took me a while, too, mostly because I ran into this weird bug/feature that didn't let me properly refer to the transcluding template's own name inside the {{cleanup}} reason text - it kept getting turned into a red link. Wasted some time on that, until it dawned on me that I could just put it into a separate notice... Overall it was useful though, learned more about delayed parsing, conditionals and stuff. July 2024

Hello, I'm CNMall41. I noticed that you added or changed content in an article, Constable Manju, but you didn't provide a reliable source. It's been removed and archived in the page history for now, but if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so. You can have a look at referencing for beginners. If you think I made a mistake, you can leave me a message on my talk page. As you did [2]. CNMall41 (talk) 07:11, 22 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

@CNMall41 I didn't know one could qualify for {{uw-unsourced}} by restoring an article to a state it had been in for two months, until an unexplained IP edit blanked a section without removing its title and left the page in a lint-erroring state with a dangling table fragment, but in any case, thanks for letting me know of my error. If the IP had bothered to add an explanation, I'd have just fixed the lint error without reverting the whole thing - the way it was done though looked very much like standard vandalism. What's causing this error?

edit

I've seen you on every single article recently listed at copyright problems adding {{Copyvio/bottom}} to fix a linter error, even on pages with a fullpage=yes parameter. What is causing it exactly, and can it be fixed? Or is it a WP:TUESDAY issue? Sennecaster (Chat) 02:59, 30 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

{{copyvio}} is adding an unclosed <div> at the top to hide the content below it. fullpage does nothing to close the <div> (it can't, because a template can only work with the wikitext passed to it, so anything outside its braces is off limits). So, the way to close it is to add {{copyvio/bottom}}, which is just a </div> with its purpose clarified by using the template instead.
A "lint error" basically means the flagged wikitext is producing incorrect HTML that the parser has had to fix in some manner - in this case by adding the missing end tag. If it's indeed intended that the full page be hidden, missing the </div> at the end is mostly a technicality, but I can assure you that even if I stop doing anything about this, sooner or later someone else will step in to do it. Linter gnomes tend to be completists. :)
There's also been some discussion about this at Template_talk:Copyvio#Wording_change_aimed_at_avoiding_lint_errors, if you haven't seen it. Gamapamani (talk) 08:48, 30 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Sorry!

Sorry for reverting your edit, I didn't do it on purpose. My watchlist loads slowly, so sometimes when I intend to click on something, it ends up clicking 'rollback' by accident. -- Earl Andrew - talk 14:14, 4 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Earl Andrew It was a bit baffling, so thanks for the explanation and no problem.:) . Gamapamani (talk) 14:54, 4 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
