reg my articles on TN villages
Hai,Mr.Ganeshk. This is karthik hope u remember me. As my BOT request was denied because of my manual editing, i wish to start writing articles again. Before that i like to consult with u regarding the same. since iam going to write articles based on the sources, for example for villages in Ariyalur i will be refering links such as official website, its District hand book and also the Tamilnadu official map page. Since a few district got these details i think i can start with them first. coming back to the issue 'speed' as i said earlier i pretyped those article on word so it was too fast. Since u adviced not to do that i assure u that i will be conscious this time. i decided to create less than 50 pages per day and i request u to supervise them.--Jenakarthik (talk) 03:50, 6 September 2011 (UTC)
- Hi Ganesh, please take a look at Karthik's proposals and see if they are ok and if he can restart his article creations.--Sodabottle (talk) 05:08, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
Invitation to help assess Wikipedia:WikiProject Gastropods
Hi. I am inviting members of some WikiProjects to take part in evaluating their projects in order to help the Wikimedia Foundation better understand such projects from the inside, to encourage reflection on best practices, and to compile a list of best practices as recommended by a number of projects. I am contacting you because you are listed as an active member of Wikipedia:WikiProject Gastropods. Having witnessed that project's work in the past in my volunteer capacity, I'd very much like to include it. I hope that you will have time and interest in participating. As much or as little as you would like to supply would be gratefully received. The assessment questions are posted at Wikipedia:WikiProject Gastropods/Self-assessment. I will myself steer clear of the page until after any discussion seems to have become dormant, at which point I will ask questions to make sure that I am developing a good overview of opinions. Thanks. --Maggie Dennis (WMF) (talk) 13:03, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
Loader
I've downloaded it, and it has a lot of potential (it could save some of the separating of the main list text files into smaller files that I had been doing). I've been experimenting with it, and it is loading the pagename lists correctly, but not appending, so I need to figure out what to do differently so that it will do that. (By the way, "seperater" should be spelled "separator") Thanks very much for letting me know about it, and I hope it will prove useful. Koumz (talk) 05:16, 5 September 2011 (UTC)
- Here is a sample of the first few lines from the list file:
Drosophila_tristis, Fallen, 1823
Drosophila_histrio, Meigen, 1830
Drosophila_littoralis, Meigen, 1830
Drosophila_melanogaster, Meigen, 1830
Drosophila_phalerata, Meigen, 1830
Drosophila_ingrata, Haliday, 1833
Drosophila_nigriceps, Meigen, 1838
Drosophila_limbata, Roser, 1840
Drosophila_testacea, Roser, 1840
and here is a screenshot:
(Screenshot removed: Function completed.)
It looks to me like the "More" tab of AWB is taking priority over the Loader plugin in terms of what gets appended. Koumz (talk) 18:10, 5 September 2011 (UTC)
- You will need to check the Skip tab - Page on the AWB screen; set that option to Skip if Page exists.
- You can remove underscore character from the article name (optional)
- You use ##article## in the place of {{BASEPAGENAME}} (optional)
- You can use ##article## in the edit summary (optional)

- You will need check the AWB setting to skip if the page exists. It is on the Skip tab on the main AWB window. The default setting is to skip if the article does not exist. Change it to Skip if page exists. Have you set this up correctly? — Ganeshk (talk) 02:05, 6 September 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, I have this set up correctly. I have created many pages using AWB already without the loader, so I usually have this set to Skip if the page exists. It's not skipping pages, it's just not populating anything into the edit box (The edit screen says "No changes"). Koumz (talk) 02:44, 6 September 2011 (UTC)

- I looked at the screenshot again. You had used the Make list option to build the article list. You should let the Loader plugin load the article list. Here are the steps:
- Start AWB
- Login with account
- Start CSVLoader
- Please follow the above steps and let me know. — Ganeshk (talk) 03:09, 6 September 2011 (UTC)

- The only change I made in the settings was to switch from Wikipedia to Wikispecies. I wonder if there's something different about Wikispecies, where I am trying to use it, that makes it not work well there, since it works perfectly for you on Wikipedia. Can you put me on the AWB check page so I can test in my userspace here? Wikispecies does not have a check page, so you can test in your user space there if you want to. - I just noticed your AWB access has been approved. — Ganeshk (talk) 11:59, 10 September 2011 (UTC)
- I tested on the English Wikipedia also, with the same results as before, so it must be some problem with my computer (maybe my antivirus software is blocking it from functioning or something like that) that causes it to load the page list correctly, but then not put anything into the edit box. I tried re-downloading both AWB and the loader, but nothing changed. It looks like it's not a problem you can do anything about, so I apologize for wasting your time and thank you for trying to fix it anyway. I'm very disappointed that I can't get my machine to run it properly, because it would have been a big help. Thanks very much, Koumz (talk) 15:21, 10 September 2011 (UTC)

- The underscore is indeed the problem, and it now works perfectly. I was actually hoping it would be a dumb mistake of mine because those are easier to fix. I did not change the underscore before because you had the change marked "optional". Thanks very, very much for your time to fix my silly mistake on this. I will tag the screenshots for deletion and you can wipe them out. Koumz (talk) 20:05, 10 September 2011 (UTC)
- No problem, Koumz. I will have the program replace the underscores in the next release. Glad to hear the issue is resolved. Sure, I can delete those screenshots once you tag them. — Ganeshk (talk) 20:12, 10 September 2011 (UTC)

Computer syntax and "how to's"
Ganeshk, thank you for helping me with the Acanthotrophon page. I wanted to add another species photo but did not know how to do it without putting it in a taxobox. Are there simple "Cheat sheets" for the computer language or syntax needed to do most of the editing, inserting photos, citations, etc? Invertzoo has been HUGELY helpful to me so far, and your recent "clean up" of my stumbling was also very helpful. Let me know on "my talk" page if you have any helpful hints. Hello Ganesh. I've been going though the new Ganeshbot articles and I noticed that in Eulimella the locality for the genus is given simply as "Bango". This comes verbatim from WoRMS as Bango (province)
http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=138404
and it appears to be located in Angola.
There is a Bengo Province in Angola that is on the ocean, which I think may be what is meant since this is a marine genus. According to a Google search there is also a Bango in the Huambo region of Angola, but that is well inland and above 4000 feet.
I am also not clear if WoRMS means to suggest that all the species in this genus occur in the Bango/Bengo area. That seems unlikely.
This is in no way a Ganeshbot issue, it's a WoRMS issue, and because JoJan communicates often with the folks at WoRMS I will tell him about this too.
Help?
Hi Ganesh, I am wondering how to make my Archives box on my talk page take up less room. I thought I would ask you if you have an idea. Can I hide most of the contents perhaps? Thanks, Invertzoo (talk) 13:55, 1 November 2011 (UTC)

Question about needed genus articles
Hello Ganesh. Thanks for all your excellent work! Recently I have been making up some genus stubs from our needed genus list here that you created for us in 2010, thanks so much! I figured that making needed genus stubs is a relatively simple thing for me to do while I am still recovering from my knee injury and still in pain so I can't tackle anything too mentally challenging. I did want to ask you however if you think this is a good use of my time, because while I have been doing it I find myself wondering whether a bot could do it in a tiny fraction of the time that it takes me to do it. Of course sometimes I am adding small things, small improvements that a bot would not do, but still I wanted to ask you that. Many thanks, Invertzoo (talk) 13:31, 10 November 2011 (UTC)
OK, no problem, I just wanted to check with you first to make sure it made sense what I was doing. Thanks, Invertzoo (talk) 23:56, 10 November 2011 (UTC)
Help again Ganesh. The image you found on Flickr of snail slime is pretty good! [1] Thanks for searching! I don't actually know how to weigh the "some rights reserved" status in order to ascertain if we can use the image or not, and, I am also not clear how to upload it from Flickr assuming it is available for us to use. If there are help pages that make those things clear, would you direct me to them so I can learn how (?). On the other hand, if there are not any good clear instructions, would you be nice enough to upload this new image for us, assuming that is OK to do so? The species is indeed Cochlicella barbara. We have two other images (from the same series by BotheredByBees) currently illustrating the article on that species. Many thanks, Invertzoo (talk) 15:30, 10 November 2011 (UTC)

Working with a template
Ah, Anna already answered this question for me, so please disregard this message, OK? Thanks Ganesh, Invertzoo (talk) 01:48, 16 November 2011 (UTC)
Hello Ganesh, I am currently working on expanding a National Lampoon template. The template was created by someone now blocked who may have have been a COI hired gun working for a company, so it had all kinds of POV. I am enlarging the template so that it contains all of the notable products from the original company as well as all of the more recent (mostly less notable) productions. I am busy writing stubs for all the redlinks right now. However I wanted to ask you this: is there a way I can divide the template so that there is one major part for all the productions of National Lampoon (magazine) from 1970 to 1998, and then a separate part for National Lampoon, Incorporated a modern company dating from 2002? The first part would contain radio, theatre, books, recordings and films, the second part would contain radio recordings films (including direct-to-video). If there is not a good way of doing this then it may end up that there have to be two templates, but we want to try having it all in one template first. Thanks, Invertzoo (talk) 16:32, 15 November 2011 (UTC)

Two questions
Hello again Ganesh. Can I ask your opinion? Do you think this template has already grow to be too big? It will end up a bit bigger still because maybe 6 or 8 more links will need to be added to it. I believe that it can be split into two templates if necessary. Or reduced to only the items that relate to the magazine.
Also I wanted to ask a software question: is it possible to put a # into the title of an article? I tried and could not get it to work. I ask because on the cover of two special editions, the title is written "National Lampoon The Best of # 4" and "National Lampoon The Best of # 5"
I had to put "National Lampoon The Best of No. 4" and "National Lampoon The Best of No. 5"
Thanks for your help, Invertzoo (talk) 20:22, 27 November 2011 (UTC)

Hello, Ganeshk, and thanks for your contributions to Wikipedia!
I wanted to let you know that I’m proposing an article that you worked on, Gudalur (Coimbatore district), for deletion because I don't think it meets our criteria for inclusion. If you don't want the article deleted:
- edit the page
- remove the text that looks like this:
{{proposed deletion/dated...}}
- save the page
It helps to explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page. If you have any questions, feel free to ask on the Help Desk. Thanks again for contributing! Suraj T 03:42, 2 December 2011 (UTC)
Bot task?
Hello Ganeshk, I has seen the excellent work your bot is doing with the Gastropod articles and I was wondering if your bot would be able to help me out. The site http://www.taxapad.com/ has taxonomic info on various groups of insects down to species level. I am only interested in Lepidoptera though. I was wondering if your bot could make pages or a single large page (in user space) with the genera and species of certain families. We have articles on a lot of genera on wikipedia, but a lot of them are incomplete. I have been working on expanding them manually, but there are thousands. To give you an idea of what I am looking for, something like this: User:Ruigeroeland/SandboxCOL would do, but you might a better idea. I could manually add the species to the relevant articles. Just having all species in wiki format would be a tremendous help. Navigation on that site is pretty difficult, so I will give some links so you can have a look: the starting point for Macro (large) moths and butterflies: http://www.taxapad.com/local.php?taxonidLC=83886081, the starting point for Micro moths: http://www.taxapad.com/local.php?taxonidLC=83886083 and the starting point for Noctoid moths: http://www.taxapad.com/local.php?taxonidLC=86007701 Is this a site your bot could work with somehow? Cheers and thanks for looking into it..! Ruigeroeland (talk) 08:51, 22 November 2011 (UTC)
- I guess that should work, but it is not working for me, I get a "Table 'taxapad.index_' doesn't exist" when I try to search using that tool... Thanks again for looking into it! Ruigeroeland (talk) 07:44, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
- Ah yes, it works now..! Anyway: it is still split in the three groups I mentioned above. See the top of the screen of the Taxonomic Index, it reads: "Taxonomic Index of MICROLEPIDOPTERA" and thus does not include the other two groups of Macrolepidoptera. I'm not sure if the index would be the way to go though, since the genera are not grouped in families. I think it would be easier to go to (in the case of the Micro Leps) http://www.taxapad.com/local.php?taxonidLC=83886081 and click on the two groups "Frenatae" and "Jugatae"? These contains the Superfamilies. Further clicking would take you to the families, subfamilies, etc. If your bot can extract the species names and wikify them, I would need them to be grouped at at least family level to be useful. Hope this helps..! Ruigeroeland (talk) 12:07, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
- I noticed I screwed up the links to the three groups before. They should be: Macrolepidoptera - others: http://www.taxapad.com/local.php?taxonidLC=82837505, Macrolepidoptera - Noctuidae: http://www.taxapad.com/local.php?taxonidLC=85983233 and Microlepidoptera: http://www.taxapad.com/local.php?taxonidLC=83886081 Ruigeroeland (talk) 12:15, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
- No worries, take your time. I am glad you are willing to look into it. Let me know if you have figured out how to extract the species. There are some families which are already done on wikipedia, so these can be skipped. Cheers! Ruigeroeland (talk) 12:12, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

Invitation to take part in Wikipedia research
Hello,
I am doing research on Wikipedia in multiple languages to see how different Wikipedia websites enable people differently to act and contribute in their ways. A brief description of the study can be found on our project page on Meta-Wiki. The results would give guidelines for further development of Wikipedia in less developed languages.
As an active member of Wikipedia community, you are invited to take part in the study and share your experience about and understanding of Wikipedia with us. It would take 30 to 60 minutes of your time to have an online conversation about Wikipedia. I would be delighted to hear any of your ideas or feedback about the study. Please feel free to contact me with your questions and concerns related to this study and your participation. You can also find the email address on the project page.--WikiTafa (talk) 02:18, 6 December 2011 (UTC)

Category:Revenue Blocks of Tamil Nadu
Dear K.Ganesh, I was directed to seek your assistance. There is a category as titled above and there many sub-categories and pages associated with that. The term panchayat union (or developmental block) is written as revenue block leading the term to be erroneous. I've initiated a discussion here regarding it. Meanwhile, the term 'revenue block' is never found in Tamil Nadu Panchayats Act, 1994 I request you to consider for 'bot' action to rename it as 'Block or Panchayat union'. Hi! I have a problem with this step: File:Wpcsv-5-6-10-1.JPG, when I run bot, all setting (all rows) are lost, and bot can't replace any data. Could you check this? Additionaly it will be difficult to do add "Advanced settings" to this function? Best regards, Karol007 (talk) 19:50, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
- I'm so sorry, it was false alarm. When I preparing screenshots step by step, I found my mistake... I forgot about save settings, and I lost regexp in every time, when I started the bot. Sometimes the fast working hasn't recommended. :-) Return to my additional question. It is possible, that I will be use with "Adwanced settings" to actualisation data from csv file, becouse sometimes, I would like do very difficult changes. It is not necessery, but in few cases this possibility will be very helpfull. Very simple example: [2]. Beast regards, Karol007 (talk) 03:24, 31 December 2011 (UTC)

Hi. When you recently edited Patella (gastropod), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Emendation (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Importance rating on bivalves
Hi Ganesh. I have a question for you. At the moment there are 839 articles on bivalves that do not currently have an importance rating, but I wanted to point out that importance ratings can actually be added by a bot, at least to all of the taxon articles, because the system we use is this: taxa higher than superfamily have top importance. Family level and superfamily articles have high importance; genus articles have mid importance; and species articles have low importance. There may possibly be a very few exceptions to this, but if so, they can be altered by hand subsequently as needed. Is there any chance you can get a bot to do this for us so I don't have to add importance manually to 839 articles, which would take days and be very boring and repetitive? Many thanks and best wishes, Invertzoo (talk) 14:53, 2 January 2012 (UTC))

Need your Opinion
Hi, I am a member of WikiProject Chennai and I noticed your name in the participants list there.
I have been editing the Neighbourhoods of Chennai articles. There are around 100 of them. I have finished cleanup (grammar correction and removal of spam) in all these 100 articles. Next, I intend to do copyediting for all these 100 articles (and article expansion for some of them). Some of the issues I noticed are mentioned below. I kindly request your opinion and guidance on these issues.
1) In most of the articles, names of all the schools available in the neighbourhood is listed. Apart from schools, there are also lists of Banks, Restaurants, supermarkets, hospitals, temples in many of the articles like this: Adambakkam. Although it does not seem promotional, it looks very odd to have these long lists in the articles. I have read in one of the policy guidelines that 'Wikipedia is not a directory'. Should I go ahead and remove these lists? On removal, should everything be removed or should the important and famous ones be retained?
2) In many of these articles, I have noticed a list of sub-localities of the neighbourhood like this: Nerkundram. Other than sub localities, some articles have a list of major roads passing the neighbourhood. Should these be removed?
3) In some of the articles, I have noticed a list of Buses (bus numbers) connecting to the neighbourhood like this: Sithalapakkam. Should these be removed?
4) In some of the articles, I have noticed a list of IT companies situated in the locality. Should these be removed even if they are referenced?
It would be helpful if you could direct me to a well written article about a locality or neighbourhood (India or abroad) for benchmarking.
Thank you
Re: Timestamp
Hi Ganesh, I'm totally blind, as it says on my user page, so I can't see your image. But when re-signing a message (and making no other changes to it), a user shouldn't change its timestamp so it appears that it was written some time after it was actually posted, hence why I changed the timestamps in this case. I actually added the unsigned notices as well in the first place. Graham87 15:01, 7 January 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, but he added the original message at 04:46, 5 January 2012 (UTC)]. I agree though ... on a scale of 1 to 10, I'd rate the importance of this as a -2. Graham87 16:13, 7 January 2012 (UTC)

MiszaBotII not archiving?
Hello Ganesh. MiszaBotII used to archive any gastropod talk page messages that were older than 30 days. Currently that is not happening. I wondered if you could work out what the problem is? Thanks so much, Invertzoo (talk) 21:43, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
- I see the bot did do some archiving now. Invertzoo (talk) 19:16, 15 January 2012 (UTC)
NewArtBot and bivalve articles etc
Hi Ganesh, If I recall correctly you already set it up so that NewArtBot would find new bivalve articles for us? And yet I can't find where the message was where you told me about that... Duh! I am not too clear-headed today. I wanted to add the NewArtBot results page link to my page under the article statistics chart and to the project page in the same place. Am I just overlooking something...?
And could we maybe set up a "random bivalve article" link too? And maybe can we set up a "Popular pages" link for the bivalve project also, like we have for the gastropods?
Many thanks! Invertzoo (talk) 17:22, 15 January 2012 (UTC)

Re: Bot task? (Part 2)
Wow! Nice work! It is indeed a long list, but imagin having to wikify all of that! I think the list is compiled based on number on the source site, based on what I saw at a quick glance? I will take the lists and will group everything based on genus and use it to update and/or create genus pages. Thanks a lot for these! Ruigeroeland (talk) 12:48, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
- If you could change one thing in your next run: could you add a space behind the comma? It now reads Prout,1928. It would be great if it could be made into Prout, 1928.Ruigeroeland (talk) 19:10, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
- Oh, and I noticed one more thing: you mentioned you pulled the letter "A", but it seems a lot of other letters were also (partly?) pulled. of the 18.000 species, about 8000 start with other letters. Do you know if these are complete genera or just random species? Cheers! Ruigeroeland (talk) 19:17, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
- The lists look great now! Thanks, I can just copy/paste the species now. Thanks! I will gradually pick some out of the lists and add them to our genus pages. I am planning to do a manual check for most genera, so it is going to take a lot of time. I will probably do some from time inbetween other projects. Thanks! P.s. Let me know when you have done the micro-moths, I will check them too. There will be a lot more blue links amongst these, since I have been working mostly on them for a time now. Cheers! Ruigeroeland (talk) 12:06, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
- One thing: do you prefer I leave the list as they are, or can I delete species I have checked and added? Ruigeroeland (talk) 12:07, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
- Oops, and one more thing: it seems all brackets have gone... Is this intentionally or was this hard to program the bot to do? About 80% of the authorities should probably be in brackets, i.e. (Prout, 1928) and not Prout, 1928. These brackets are important, because they indicate a species has been moved to another genus. Ruigeroeland (talk) 12:12, 8 February 2012 (UTC)

Importance ratings for bivalve articles
Hello Ganesh, We have approximately 830 bivalve articles that currently do not have an importance rating. All of the species articles in that list can be rated "low", all of the genus articles "mid", and all of the family articles or higher, can be rated "high". What is the best way to do this? I don't think it makes sense to do it by hand as it is a perfect example of the tedious and repetitive work that bots do so well. Or perhaps I could ask Anna if she could do it using AWB? What do you think? Thanks, Invertzoo (talk) 18:41, 9 February 2012 (UTC)
Thanks so much Ganesh, it would be great when you have a chance to do that. Invertzoo (talk) 01:12, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
MSU Interview
Greetings,
My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, were it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.
So a few things about the interviews:
- Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
- Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
- All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
- All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
- The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.
Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.
If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.
Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.
Sincerely,
Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 19:28, 9 February 2012 (UTC)

About the automatic taxoboxes documentation
Hello Ganesh. I wanted to say I am still in favor of the idea of automatic taxoboxes for Project Gastropods and Project Bivalves, if the documentation can be made really user-friendly so that even newbies can use it. Six months ago when I looked at the documentation I have to say I found it completely impenetrable (!)... but maybe it is a bit better now. You asked me how it could be improved, but it was hard for me to tell you specifically what needed fixing, as I thought the whole thing was really not well thought out and was more like notes for insiders rather than a take-you-by-the-hand explanation. I don't know if this strikes you as out of date, butthis Project Plant page is more the kind of writing I would like to see in order for people to understand how to use the automatic taxoboxes. I much prefer continuous prose for a general introduction rather than a concise bullet point list that does not really explain things and uses too much insider jargon. Best wishes, Invertzoo (talk) 13:24, 16 February 2012 (UTC)
- Hi Ganesh, I once ran into automatic taxoboxes and it was not a happy encounter. I had to move an article and suddenly the taxobox became a mess. Little did I know I had to change also the template of the taxobox and didn't know to how to do it properly. Furthermore the link to the template in the taxobox didn't show up in my browser (Firefox). I don't know if improvements have been made to this procedure, but moving an article with an automatic taxobox doubles, even triples the workload. Look at your "Unaccepted list" with more than 700 moves to be made and imagine what this entails. Unless this problem can be solved, no automatic taxoboxes for me. JoJan (talk) 15:25, 16 February 2012 (UTC)
- Perhaps we should start a subpage on the Gastropods project that is similar to the Plants one and provide some examples. — Ganeshk (talk) 03:54, 18 February 2012 (UTC)
AfD and PROD notifications
Hi Ganesh. Back in November, you got either an AfD or PROD notification, and it was during one of the template testing project's experiments. If you could go here and leave us some feedback about what you think about the new versions of the templates we tested (there are links on the page), that would be very useful. (You can also email me at swalling wikimedia.org if you want.) Thanks! Steven Walling (WMF) • talk 22:24, 17 February 2012 (UTC)

Could do with some Tamil help, please
Hi, I wonder if you could help me at User_talk:Rajanaicker#Language problems ? The conversation drifts down the page from that section but I am really concerned regarding the user's appreciation of our copyright policies and their English language comprehension. That they mean well is clear but some input from a Tamil speaker might be beneficial. Usually, I would approach Sodabottle in situations such as this but he is not often around at en-WP at present due to work being done at ta-WP. - Sitush (talk) 15:44, 19 February 2012 (UTC)
- Hi Sitush. I saw your request on my talk page. The same user's edits were problematic in Tamil Wikipedia as well and we had to protect the article. I haven't followed his claims, but usually such cases are due to a lack of understanding of our policies. Also, a number of such people have got the lore of their communities from unreliable sources and are quite convinced of their history. Sadly, I don't have much wikitime to spend on this. I don't have particular knowledge about the subject too. Will try to pitch in if and when possible. Sorry for not being able to help. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 15:36, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
- Ah. Thanks very much for responding. Oddly, after leaving the note above things became a (bit) more clear on that user's en-WP Talk Page. I had mentioned that my usual port of call would be Sodabottle but that I was aware that Sodabottle was heavily involved with ta-WP at the moment. There then followed a response which gave me cause for considerable concern. I am tempted to seek admin intervention on en-WP for deletion of the various articles on the grounds of apparent non-notability and lack of competence. But that is a pretty strong step to take. Obviously, the first bit has to go through WP:AfD but, honestly, the revelation that this person has had problems even on their native language WP does not bode well. I will have a think. Again, many thanks for your comments. - Sitush (talk) 00:11, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

Your bot
Hi Ganeshk, thank you for your message regarding the bot. Sorry it took me a couple of days to get back to you, I have been busy at work since the weekend with no time for Wiki. Did you program your bot? I must say it is very impressive. I have seen you around since you got involved in the gastropods project, although we haven't spoken directly until now, and the bot has done some great work. Your proposal is an interesting one with obvious advantages, however one of the benefits of going through them all manually one-by-one is that I can check on the taxonomy of each species as I go as there are quite a few that are incorrect and need removing, and quite a few more that are not actually listed. Going through manually genus by genus gives me a methodical way to check all of them as I go. Also I quite enjoy it. It doesn't actually take all that long either. Would you mind holding off just for the time being while I continue and see how I get on manually? If it proves to be a much larger task that I think it is, and takes way too long, then perhaps we could unleash the bot! Does that sound reasonable? Thanks again for contacting me, I'll report back to you again once I have had another go. Antarctic-adventurer (talk) 11:47, 29 February 2012 (UTC)

WikiProject India Tag & Assess 2012 Contest
Hello friends, we are a number of editors from WikiProject India have got together to assess the many thousands of articles under the stewardship of the project, and we'd love to have you, a fellow member, join us. These articles require assessment, that is, the addition of a WikiProject template to the talk page of an article, assessing it for quality and importance and adding a few extra parameters to it.
As of March 11, 2012, 07:00 UTC, WikiProject India has 95,998 articles under its stewardship. Of these 13,980 articles are completely unassessed (both for class and importance) and another 42,415 articles are unassessed for importance only. Accordingly, a Tag & Assess 2012 drive-cum-contest has begun from March 01, 2012 to last till May 31, 2012.
If you are new to assessment, you can learn the minimum about how to evaluate from Part One of the Assessment Guide. Part Two of the Guide will help you learn to employ the full functionality of the talk page template, should you choose to do so.
You can sign up on the Tag & Assess page. There are a number of awards to be given in recognition of your efforts. Come & join us to take part in this exciting new venture. You'll learn more about India in this way.

About new bivalve article listing
Hello Ganesh. I have noticed that our new bivalve article listings only rarely have actual bivalve articles in them. I think it would be good to get NewArtBot to leave "pearl" out of the search terms. That would really help a lot I think to eliminate the extra listings that we don't need. Is it OK if I ask you to deal with this? Thanks, Invertzoo (talk) 20:28, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

Great American Wiknic for Atlanta in June
Hi Ganesh. I would like to invite you to again join the Great American Wiknic this June (you could update Wikipedia:Meetup/Atlanta) :) Also, please confirm any preliminary details at Wikipedia:Wiknic#2012 Wiknic.--Pharos (talk) 19:00, 10 May 2012 (UTC)
- I've also posted something at Wikipedia talk:Meetup/Atlanta/Atlanta 2 Let's be bold and get this moving soon!--Pharos (talk) 17:27, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
- If you could help in just suggesting a public park and time for the Atlanta Wiknic, that would be quite helpful in itself to get conversation started, even if you're not sure if you'll be able to "host" in person.--Pharos (talk) 15:56, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

- Please see Wikipedia talk:Meetup/Atlanta/Atlanta 3 - SudoGhost 01:31, 8 June 2012 (UTC)
- If you could help finalize the location and time (just pick something!), that would be awesome.--Pharos (talk) 01:27, 17 June 2012 (UTC)
- Feel free to postpone the Atlanta Wiknic date a week if you like, but please finalize things today if you can; the notice is going out to our quite large pool of anonymous readers now.--Pharos (talk) 17:52, 18 June 2012 (UTC)
- At this point you might want to delay it a week, not just for LadyofShallot, but also because things haven't been finalized till a very late stage yet.--Pharos (talk) 19:25, 19 June 2012 (UTC)

Featured images of gastropods
Hello Ganesh. I noticed that in our article statistics for the Gastropods Project we currently have one "Featured Media" or FM, a photo of a gastropod, here: [4]. However, if you look on this page [5], you will see that there are already quite a lot of other gastropod images that we can claim as FMs. What I wanted to ask is: do all of those images need to be also placed on Wikipedia in order for us to put the project template on them, and thus have them listed in our article statistics as FMs? And if so, is it a lot of work to get them to be up on WP as well as on Commons? And do you think we should do the transfers, or ask the author of the images to do that? He is in Project Gastropods by the way, User:Llez, here [6]. Thanks Ganesh, Invertzoo (talk) 18:12, 20 June 2012 (UTC)
Search terms for bivalves
Me again Ganesh. If you don't mind, I think we should also remove the term "oyster" from the bivalve search terms, because we are still getting too many irrelevant articles in the new article listings. In fact if you could give me a link to a page that has the search terms listed on it I could try to decide whether we should eliminate one or two more terms? Many thanks, Invertzoo (talk) 18:17, 20 June 2012 (UTC)

Non-free rationale for File:Tamil Nadu Assembly Constituencies 2006.jpg
Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Tamil Nadu Assembly Constituencies 2006.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Bivalvia
The article Bivalvia is currently a Featured Article candidate. It has been a long process because I am unused to the procedure and its requirements but we are nearly there. There is one more bit of information I need.
I am looking for someone who has a copy of Marcus Huber's "Compendium of Bivalves" or who has access to one. The information I need is the number of the page or pages on which he states that the "total number of living bivalve species is about 9,200 combined in 106 families." This is the information in the Bivalvia article where it is accompanied by a table showing the number of families, genera and species in each order.
So, all I need is the page number. Can you help? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 18:43, 8 July 2012 (UTC)

FM gastropods
Hi Ganesh. A month or more ago I went through the Wikipedia Featured Images of gastropods, and gave them all the right gastropod project template on their talk pages, see the list here and yet they still do not appear on our article statistics. Can you maybe work out why? Thanks for all your help. Invertzoo (talk) 17:00, 25 August 2012 (UTC)
Yes that might be the answer, although I think it might be longer ago than that problem. I put all the templates up on the 1st and 2nd of August. Invertzoo (talk) 22:06, 25 August 2012 (UTC)
Yes, great! Thanks Ganesh. Do you also happen to know how I can find out if any bivalve images have WIkipedia Featured Image status, other than the one we have listed? Invertzoo (talk) 02:03, 27 August 2012 (UTC)
Thanks again Ganesh for your help. Actually the ones that were Featured Images on Wikipedia I had already found and templated about a month ago although why only one is showing up in our articles statistics for Bivalves I don't know! Do you understand why? As for the images that are Featured on Commons, I can't do anything with those right now... although the scallop image, if it is indeed considered an extinct subspecies, probably should be nominated for FM on WIkipedia. However I will have to make an article for it first. Best wishes, Invertzoo (talk) 05:00, 27 August 2012 (UTC)
Terrific, thanks so much Ganesh! I look forward to seeing them on the article stats. Invertzoo (talk) 16:38, 27 August 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for patience with Taxobox changes
I see you also contacted Smith609, and as expected, just too busy to spend so much more time on the Taxobox wp:expansion depth limit. So much effort had already been made to optimize the taxonomy depth, and it must be very frustrating that it still gets "Page exceeded...depth". This past month, when attempting new, quick fixes, I tried to change Template:Speciesbox, and Template:T^8, but there appear to be multiple causes of exceeding the limit, so changing only 1 subtemplate is not enough. I will try to find all the major causes of the exceeded depth, but meanwhile, note that the limit of "40 levels" is so restrictive, so miserly, in terms of what the markup language could do, that is like "trying to sweep a sidewalk with a toothbrush". The pathetic little 40 levels need to be 60, 80 or 200, and that can cause intelligent people to think, "Who has time to grope with this pitiful, limited language???". So, I thank you for your patience in trying to help with these trivial little expansion limits. However, I think there is hope that we can find a way around them, because "40" is a big number when seeking to redo a 10-level algorithm with some faster method. I have been reducing the template-nesting levels for years (in Template:Convert and other templates), so I think we can succeed with this one as well. Thanks. -Wikid77 (talk) 18:34, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

Error from WoRMS
I noticed just now that GaneshBot had created a stub for " Turbo Modelia " and thought that was odd, because no species name takes a capital letter. And so I looked it up on WoRMS and found out that they have now deleted that page because of an "input error":
http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=590657
So I think we also need to delete that stub?
Thanks, Invertzoo (talk) 19:03, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
Great, Thanks to you Ganesh, Remover of Obstacles! That was clearly an error by WoRMS, not the bot's error, and yes it was fixed by them quite fast. Invertzoo (talk) 12:12, 15 September 2012 (UTC)

Species in the genus Trabecula (gastropod)
The automatic taxobox for Trabecula jeffreysiana has the genus name linked to the wrong article: the article Trabecula rather than the article Trabecula (gastropod). Fix for Template:Taxobox/taxonomy
I have tested a reduced-depth update for {Taxobox/taxonomy} used by {Taxobox/core}, with expansion depth as only 30/40 levels to display all taxons. It is ready to be installed. See:
As the improved design, I finally realized we need to just directly list the upper-level taxons, such as above Chordata. The fix also allows showing every taxon, so people could understand all the data in those {taxonomy/<taxon>} templates. For example, to show all taxons for elephants (Loxodonta), now we can use:
- {{taxobox/taxonomy/sandbox |Loxodonta|55}}
Result:{{taxobox/taxonomy/sandbox|Loxodonta|55}}
Note, there are still other subtemplates of {Taxobox} which push the expansion-depth levels to 39/40. However, we need to fix each problem, along the way, to determine how many articles have other depth problems. We started with over 16,000 articles exceeding the depth, and now there are only 4,500 there, so progress is being made. -Wikid77 (talk) 11:38, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
New article. Totally beyond my ken. Please take a look. This could easily be a WP:DYK with a little bit of work. Thanks. 7&6=thirteen (☎) 15:40, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
Now to fix Template:Automatic_taxobox
The next fix, when you have time, is to update Template:Automatic_taxobox (from the /sandbox) to default {{{taxon}}} as {{PAGENAME}}. See the linked edit-request below, where you are probably the only admin who will update it:
That should fix over 2,000 more taxobox articles to not have "exceeded depth". Currently, the prior fix is slowly being reformatted into the "8,348" articles using {Taxobox/taxonomy}. Normally those 8,000 pages could be reformatted within 1 hour, but Wikipedia's reformat job queue has a huge, huge backlog, needing a while longer. -Wikid77 (talk) 19:24, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
