Don't worry. I'm right back from the family emergency wikibreak, and right into a school wikibreak. I got in trouble too, because they installed new monitoring software on all the classroom computers. So at any time, the teacher can lock you out, disable your internet, view your current screen, log your keystrokes, monitor your instant messenger status, monitor... well actually, take a look at NetSupport, that's the company's wikipedia page. But long story short, no more at school editing for me either... especially since my school's IP is blocked, and if we all have keyloggers... then the teacher (in theory) could get my password. --HALtalk 18:26, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

Hello DHMO, I was wondering if you could take a quick look at this article and see if it might be ready for a GA nomination. If you don't have time to, I understand, and hope that exams and such go well! Love, Neranei (talk) 15:44, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

Never!

Never will I give in! :) The AOM list is much better than before, the lead is great and we have the tables all worked out. As for the copyvio issues, just about all of descriptions of units (excluding the ones we have rewritten) were copied from this source (which ironically is used as an external link in the article). We were planning to reference more technical details about the units using that source, until AD discovered the copyvio.

I haven't been working much on the list in the past few days, I've either been sick with the flu and not feeling like writing, or busy with other projects (like Portal:Knitting ;) which I've only started to work on because I found out how easy knitting is). And that's where I discovered Portal:Music of Australia; if you ever get bored with your other projects then we can work on that. Take care, Sebi [talk] 02:24, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

Re: Xoriat

I leave warnings 99.9% of the time. I'm usually the one reminding other users to do it; in fact, I'd already done it tonight. I chose to leave out that warning on purpose, as I figured a D&D fanboy would just remove the PROD as they likely think that whatever subject it was is obviously notable and we are too small-minded to realize it. This probably wasn't terribly fair of me, though. GlassCobra (talkcontribs) 07:13, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mon (currency)

Re Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mon (currency) -- keep? How does that discussion resemble a consensus for keep? -- JHunterJ 23:25, 11 September 2007 (UTC)

I closed as keep (perhaps no consensus..whatever) because there was no consensus to do anything else. If you wish to get a merger happening, the talk page is the best place to discuss. AfD is for deletion - that article wasn't going to get deleted. Dihydrogen Monoxide (H2O) 23:28, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
OK, I can see a no consensus result (although it should be so indicated as such, IMO). But I'm also aware of several recent AfD's that have ended in "merge/redirect" lately, like GURPS Monsters. -- JHunterJ 23:34, 11 September 2007 (UTC)

AU Music Portal - Audio/video

Hi there! Audio and video files, like images, can be fair-use or free-use. Portals can only use free use contents. If there are no free use AU music files at the moment, why not try to find some? Possible sources could be very old albums - which are now in public domain, or sample files which their owners agree to publish under GFDL/CC. The difficulty of creating portal on focused topic area is that much of the content need to be created from scratch.

By the way, Portal:Music has a "sound of the day" section. Arman Aziz 05:36, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

I'm hoping you can help with a tedious administrative task. I'm clearing out CAT:CSD, a 300 page mess. When the "mess" gets this big, there's a lot of mistakenly tagged articles. You're well versed in that policy, and I was hoping you could look trough CSD and remove the mistakenly tagged articles. Request for Comment at Talk:Portable building-- what do we do next?

I am posing this question to you and a few other editors because I know you are an experienced editor and I have seen you in the AfD discussions. This is the first time I have had a RfC (Request for Comment) regarding an edit dispute. I have opposed the inclusion of webpage links an inclusion of what I think is commercial information regarding a manufacturer called "Portakabin, Ltd." in the article Portable building, because there is no citation to any reliable source to support the assertions made or justify its inclusion while its competitors' links and references have been deleted. The editor wishing to include the information has filed a Request for Comment at Talk:Portable building.

The problem we have is that he and I are still the only ones discussing and commenting. Everything is nice and cordial. It is the model example of handling an edit dispute... except that I don't know what else we can do to acquire a consensus opinion. How do we get others to render an opinion? No one is coming to our party and we made some very nice tea and lovely little biscuits. It has been a couple of days already. What do we do? Thanks for any help and guidance.OfficeGirl 03:47, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

The best way to acquire a consensus opinion is not to draw outsiders in to it, but to try and make the other side of the story realise that you're right...or make you realise that they're right...or to reach a compromise. Dihydrogen Monoxide (H2O) 07:53, 13 September 2007 (UTC)
I appreciate the note about canvassing, but when I left you the note I was flummoxed as to how an RfC could be effective in an article which just wasn't attracting anyone at all. No opinions. Zero. Nada. That's why I approached editors who seemed to know about procedures. I assumed (rightly) that you would recuse yourself from actually entering an opinion on the RfC itself, but hoped that you would guide me to some sort of attention getting mechanism so that Anthony and I wouldn't be left sitting and drinking tea politely whilst listening to the sound of crickets in the background as cobwebs accumulated on the commentless Request for Comment.
But I found the "Request for Third Opinion" function which, though seemingly duplicative, did the trick to get someone to the RfC with a neutral plea for attention. Thanks for your answer. OfficeGirl 08:17, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

GA

Hey H2O! I've been working on the article Larry Mullen Jr. of late, and I know it's not ready for GA yet, but I'm having some trouble with it. Could you take a look at it and give me a couple of general suggestions, please? If you don't have time with exams and all, I understand. I guess I've just spent way too much time around that article!   Love, Neranei (talk) 12:34, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

Thank you so very much for your suggestions; I worked on all of them, the only two problems that I came up with are the citations for his drum kit configuration, I am combing U2 by U2 and some interviews to see if that's where they got it; otherwise, I can only presume that they figured it out from pictures. Also, about the picture, it is awful, but I am working on getting permission for a better one. Thanks again! Love, Neranei (talk) 01:25, 18 September 2007 (UTC)
Ah, thanks, I'll keep looking. As for the pic, I got another email, and the person says he's getting permission. Love, Neranei (talk) 04:54, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

Misery (band)

Well it doesn’t read, To improve Wikipedia’s coverage of NOTABLE alternative music, so I hope you change it or find another way to reconcile your apparently conflicting positions of more coverage of alternative music while deleting their articles. You won Giggy. The world is now safe from having to read the Misery (band) on Wikipedia and can focus their research on professional wrestlers and Wikipedia approved NOTABLE alternative music. Thank you and good luck. Nanabozho 20:33, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

Giggy: I have seen the error of my ways, and wish to learn from you. Can you tell me how to nominate the article: Misery (Australian band) for deletion? Or perhaps you could make the nomination yourself and send me a link of where to vote on it? I read the article, and can't find that they are notable. Stay the course. Hi - I have undone your edit to remove redlinks. I think redlinks in a list is useful unless you are certian there will be no article, in which case there should be a reference to the river but no link. Portal on Australia Music

Hi H20: I have said what I wanted to say on featured portal discussion, so I won't add anything there. Let others in the community express their views. Just to continue a little bit on what you said last: representativeness is a part of usefulness, don't you agree? Also we sometime get carried away by what the "featured criteria" are.. while we ignore the number one criterion/definition of any featured item is - it should exemplify one of the best works on wikipedia.

Anyway, you did some excellent work on the portal. Irrespective of whether the portal gets featured or not do keep up the good work. Arman Aziz 10:19, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

I believe that deletion means deletion

Reference your comments at WP:MFD#Wikipedia:WikiProject_Lake_Macquarie we're having some discussion on this at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Council/Inactive_projects where there is a centralized discussion of the problem of inactive projects, and it has been discussed on the MfD talk page as well. Things can be undeleted for a while but I don't think it is a good practice to use this argument because it leads to the false impression that things can always be undeleted. See discussion at: Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Council/Inactive_projects#Fundamentally_flawed_reasoning. I invite you to join us there and lend what you know of this issue to the discussion. (Please don't respond here, if you want to respond directly please respond at my user page, thanks)--Doug.(talk contribs) 18:17, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

No problem at all. Several editors think I'm full of it, even though I think that Brion is pretty darned good authority, in fact when it comes to a tech issue, I'd say he's the final authority. If you haven't already, please do join our discussion, the main purpose is to figure out what to do with inactive projects and how to go about it. We really could use more input in order to try to develop some consensus. My main concerns with saying you can undelete are that 1) it's at least not technically true that it can "always" be done so it shouldn't be relied on, and 2) it's not what deletion is for - that would in fact be a version of archiving, and 3) is the fact that you can undelete really a good reason to say that you should delete? If that's the argument then why not just leave it up if it "isn't harming anyone" as Tim Starling said (or words to that effect) in the discussion last time this came up for deletion. But then, that's why we have the discussions, some people have different opinions than others about what is grounds for deletion. Cheers.--Doug.(talk contribs) 02:15, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

AFD closure

What was your reasoning for closing Order of the Phoenix (organisation) as keep? Not one of the people saying "keep" refuted the claims made that the article should be deleted, or provided any evidence that it could be improved. Vote counting should never be used to close an AFD. Jay32183 04:56, 23 September 2007 (UTC)

It's not fair to assume that vote counting was the reasoning. Perhaps it was that there was clearly no consensus (which is why I would have kept it)? the_undertow talk 05:57, 23 September 2007 (UTC)
You need to put the old afd tag on the article's talk page. 86.137.127.139 12:38, 23 September 2007 (UTC)
There was a clear consensus to delete. The article failed multiple policies and guidelines and was only met with "I like it" or "cleanup tags are magic". Vote counting is the only thing that could have led to "not delete". Jay32183 17:07, 23 September 2007 (UTC)

3000 edits is not enough?

Re your comments on Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship/Edokter. 3000 edits is not enough?

Wow!

Once upon a time when I was regularly participating in RFA, I *would* actually review a person's edit history, often looking at almost every edit. Not enough edit summary usage? Get away! If many edits had no summary, I'd actually go to this person and ask them to explain what was up. After reading each edit, if I hadn't found what I was looking for (no examples of how they deal with conflicts especially, but also quality of their writing, and tone on talk pages), I'd make a comment stating so, and requesting them to make some more edits.

After about 750-1500 edits, people usually showed what it took, and that takes an hour or two to check (provided there are decent edit summaries). More just takes way too much of my time, hence my lack of participation in RFAs these days.

Of course, if a user has few edits, I might still participate, do a full check and find out if a candidate is decent, but what's the point if people go "Oppose, come back at 5000 edits and 6 months"? I can promise I don't have the time to check those 5000 edits at that point in time. :-/

So do I take it that you actually are very dedicated, and actually are willing to spend half a day or more sifting through people's edits? Or does your statement have other grounds?

I'm curious! :-)

For example, to edit the "*pokes*" section, you'd have to click the edit button for "Hoop Guy....". Tricky.  hmwith  talk 19:05, 24 September 2007 (UTC)

Transcluding while I sleep...ungrateful *grumblegrumble* Dihydrogen Monoxide (H2O) 05:18, 25 September 2007 (UTC)
Haha, We're on different time zones. I'm sorry! I didn't want to do anything that would remotely seem like WP:CANVASSing. About the links, I know. Same here. I'll work on it right now. I didn't know it bothered anyone else a great deal. I don't want it to hold one back from commenting on the page!  hmwith  talk 14:37, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

You're Back?

Giggy, is that you? good to see you again! Of course, if it is in fact you. J-ſtanTalkContribs 21:00, 24 September 2007 (UTC)

It sure is! Dihydrogen Monoxide (H2O) 05:18, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

Your GA review

It would seem that Irpen has taken on unilaterally removing the GA tags from Denial of Soviet occupation, which you reviewed for WP:GAC, apparently based on nothing more than his dislike of the subject matter. (Diffs: [4], [5], [6].)

What's the appropriate approach to solve this kind of vandalism problem? ΔιγυρενΕμπροσ! 22:26, 24 September 2007 (UTC)

I checked; the article appears to be still listed. It would seem Irpen only removed the tag, not other aspects of WP:GA listing.
Coming back to the subject of article quality, I believe I've made further progress, by heeding your suggestions for improvement. Thanks! ΔιγυρενΕμπροσ! 23:13, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
I agree, it's getting better. I've watchlisted the talk page for this debate, also added comments there. We'll see where it goes. Dihydrogen Monoxide (H2O) 05:18, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

Deletion of Schafer House and others

Hi I just recently noticed your proposed deletion of the UCL accomodation articles. I agree in retrospect that the individual buildings do not warrant their own article and so deletion/merging is a good idea. However it would be nice if in future deletions etc you could nominate the creator of the article (in these examples me). It is considered courtesy to nominate the articles key contributors and creator when proposing an afd. As it happens I am not able to comment on the schafer house article, ergo its pointless me commenting on the other two ucl residences. Next time please let the creator known when you nominate for afd. Many thanks. LordHarris 12:26, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

My RFA

Thank you for your support in my Request for Adminship, which passed with 50 supports, 1 neutral, and 1 oppose. My goal is to keep earning your trust every time I grab the "mop". (And I'm always open to constructive criticism and advice!) Again, thanks. --Fabrictramp 15:12, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

Looks good apart from a few stumbles here and there, but I'll point them out at a future possible FAC and are not major. Good work! NSR77 TC 19:14, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

Hey Alex, It's no problem mate. Thanks for the barnstar, I really do appreciate it. I've got gmail/facebook (I'm movin' up!) and I'll send you an e-mail. If I get around to it. Here's one more, of how an edior should be (in my mind)

Your RfA (3)

Your RfA is highly polarized. I see this as a good thing. You have more supports than I had, and twice the turnout. It shows less about you as a candidate and more about the process and the major tweaks that will hopefully follow. It's always said as humans, we have a pathetically short-term memory and are altogether too forgiving. This, of course, was said long before there was born the Request for Administration. the_undertow talk 05:31, 26 September 2007 (UTC)

I'm sorry for the recent change in events, but I am highly shocked by the recent revelation. This isn't to say I've turned, but I certainly am interested in an explanation considering (as you know) GA is where almost all of my participation lies and I'm exhausting myself in the endeavor of improving the project and ensuring quality. In looking over the article, I'm not at all impressed. Several things are brought into question for me, and I feel further review is necessary. For that reason, I'm noming the article at GAR. Again, I'm sorry. While friends are great on Wikipedia, I can't give special treatment, and I hope you wouldn't expect it from me. The project is why I'm here, and that's what comes first. LaraLove 07:22, 26 September 2007 (UTC)
By way of remark, the "recent revelation" entails baseless accusations by Irpen. Whomever it may concern, ask me for details.
It may be relevant that while I had been paying some attention to Dihydrogen Monoxide's progress, and previous RfAs, there was no communication whatsoever between me and him before the day before yesterday, and this "meeting" happened by pure chance. I understand your concern regarding friendship's potential risk to compromise the review work, but there is no such risk in this case. ΔιγυρενΕμπροσ! 08:34, 26 September 2007 (UTC)
Interesting...we'll see where the GAR goes. <3 IRC. Dihydrogen Monoxide (H2O) 00:58, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

A request

Hi there, "Water". On the assumption that both you and Digwuren would be glad of clarification of the claims made by Irpen, I'm asking you if I may quote a line or two by you from the IRC discussion you and Digwuren had of GA reviews on #wikipedia. This would be in the context of offering some evidence in the Request for arbitration/Digwuren. I'm not interested in quoting whole dialogues, but merely a few rather bland words by you. I could tell you exactly what words by e-mail, if you like. Best wishes and sorry about the RFA. You-know-who, who is a lot bigger than either you or me, sends her regards. Your RfA (4)

Hi, Dihydrogen Monoxide. I'd like to suggest you pull your RFA, you're getting quite a bit of opposes. Cheers,JetLover (Report a mistake) 21:44, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

Why bother? It's doomed. You know it. Leave it to be closed and walk away with your head held high. Even if you're not right to be an admin at the moment in the communities eyes, you're still a great guy and a commited Wikipedian. See my talk page photo for reasons (of my own, of course) why we help out here. Best as ever. Pedro :  Chat  21:51, 28 September 2007 (UTC)
Just because something doesn't go the way it was intended to go, doesn't mean you should just withdraw; seems likes very cowardly behaviour to me. ~ Sebi [talk] 21:54, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

Withdraw? Nevah! I actually got really bummed out after withdrawing last time, thinking that maybe, possibly, it could have still passed. Oh well... Dihydrogen Monoxide (H2O) 01:10, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

Your closure of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Order of the Phoenix (organisation)

As you may be aware, your closure of the AfD Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Order of the Phoenix (organisation) was challenged at Deletion Review. See Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2007 September 23. The outcome was ultimately endorsed by a consensus of contributors but there was concern that despite the numbers in the AfD, consensus was not truly clear enough for a non-admin closure. You may want to briefly review the discussion so as to hone your skills as an interpreter of AfD discussions. Eluchil404 07:02, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

Interesting interpretation of the DRV you've got there...I'll read it, yes, but I'll keep performing non admin closes too. Dihydrogen Monoxide (H2O) 01:10, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
Of course. I am a big supporter of non-admin closures, but it is important to take all indica of consensus, not just numbers into account. Also, AfD's with a tenacious minority may be a poor choice for a non-admin closure since they are often contested at DRV. In any event, thanks for your help in fighting the AfD closure backlog. Eluchil404 20:41, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

Your RfA

I have closed your RfA. I am afraid there was no consensus to promote you. Please feel free to reapply in the future when you feel you can pass. Good luck. --Deskana (talk) 10:50, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

Thanks :) Dihydrogen Monoxide (H2O) 01:10, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
Don't take it hard mate, just give it till after Christmas (unless someone else nominates you). That gives you three solid months to busy yourself with other types of edits and put your head down, arse up and work on improving yourself as an editor so that you receive much less resistance. Mind you, this is coming from a guy who wants nothing less than being an admin/beaurocrat/checkpage guy. But I can see why you want it, but patience will pay off, I assure you. On the plus side, RfA is a lot more indicative of your position than Editor review, as more people respond than at ER. Good luck next time and (unless you really step on my toes or degrade your quality as an editor and community member) I'm still going to be there with my thumbs up for you next time. --lincalinca 05:28, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

Thank you, Giggy, for your kind suggestion about my becoming an Admin. I'm not ready yet, but really do appreciate your support. It means a lot to think that a good editor like yourself believes I'm worthy.

I wanted to offer you my moral support at this time too, as I know you have been facing a few WP challenges lately, and am sure that your strength of character will carry you through... best regards, Johnfos 02:15, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

Blocks

Creating a lousy article on a neologism is not blockworthy. Creating a hoax article (did you READ that piece of garbage?), however, most definitely is. Especially if the username indicates b-tard/4channery. DS 03:24, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

Looking at the content of the page the user created, I think DS's judgment was completely sound -- this wasn't a neologism, it was a clear hoax with a malicious nature, and it's clear that this user was only here to disrupt the project. --krimpet 03:26, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
