Thanks for removing the "Read more" link from Bob Filner. I'm not sure if you know this, but that gets automatically appended to text copied from certain Web pages (by a program called Tynt). Also, band member Ashton Irwin tweeted on the 5 Seconds of Summer twitter account that he was laughing at his Wikipedia page. https://twitter.com/5sos/status/366771658133999617 He found the whole ordeal comical. And also, my '5sauce' edit was referring to what said member, Ashton, calls the band. I feel that there was no need for you to undo what I had done. I just need your help to make the Burka Avenger page more factual and include information from other sources than the one that are mentioned here. The criticism has been mentioned but the acknowledgements are missing. Can you please help me, as I tried editing the page but was unable to give it an objective feel. Hi Ayso21. I'd be happy to try and help. I reverted the changes you made to the Burka Avenger article mostly because it read like ad copy and due to the inclusion of promotional language, peacock words, and poor grammar. You seem to have deleted all of the sourced critical commentary and replaced it with a glowing reception section without any inline citations. As such, your changes did not seem to adhere to the neutral point of view policy. Some of the wikilinks that you placed in the article were also problematic, as you linked to unrelated terms such as the Wearside Football League, Glider (sailplane), and Series (mathematics). We also don't link everyday words understood by most readers (see WP:OVERLINK). I understand that you want to include more of the positive commentary that the series has received. The references you added at the end of the article are a good start and we could probably incorporate some of them into the reception section. If you would like to help improve the article, I would suggest proposing changes on the talk page or starting out by making small, incremental changes. Let me know how I can help. Thank you so much for your reply Gobonobol. I would like to add some references to the article along with the points that have already been mentioned there. I am not aware of wiki rules as you can probably make out so would request you to add the citations and references. The truth is that while the Tv series has received critical analysis, it has been positively received internationally and none of those facts are mentioned here. I just want to make sure some of those references are also cited in.

WikiCup 2013 August newsletter

This year's final is upon us. Our final eight, in order of last round's score, are:

1. Hawkeye7 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer who has contributed on topics of military history and physics, including a number of high-importance topics. Good articles have made up the bulk of his points, but he has also scored a great deal of bonus points. He has the second highest score overall so far, with more than 3000 points accumulated.
2. Casliber (submissions), another WikiCup veteran who reached the finals in 2012, 2011 and 2010. He writes on a variety of topics including botany, mycology and astronomy, and has claimed the highest or joint highest number of featured articles every round so far this year. He has the third highest score overall, with just under 3000 points accumulated.
3. Cwmhiraeth (submissions), 2012 WikiCup champion, who writes mostly on marine biology. She has also contributed to high-importance topics, seeing huge numbers of bonus points for high-importance featured and good articles. Previous rounds have seen her scoring the most bonus points, with scoring spread across did you knows, good articles and featured articles.
4. Sasata (submissions), a WikiCup veteran who finished in second place in 2012, and competed as early as 2009. He writes articles on biology, especially mycology, and has scored highly for a number of collaborations at featured article candidates.
5. Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), the winner of the 2010 competition. His contributions mostly concern Naval history, and he has scored a very large number of points for good articles and good article reviews in every round. He is the highest scorer overall this year, with over 3500 points in total.
6. Ealdgyth (submissions), who is competing in the WikiCup for the second time, though this will be her first time in the final. A regular at FAC, she is mostly interested in British medieval history, and has scored very highly for some top-importance featured articles on the topic.
7. Miyagawa (submissions), a finalist in 2012 and 2011. He writes on a broad variety of topics, with many of this year's points coming from good articles about Star Trek. Good articles make up the bulk of his points, and he had the most good articles back in round 2; he was also the highest scorer for DYK in rounds 1 and 2.
8. Adam Cuerden (submissions) has previously been involved with the WikiCup, but hasn't participated for a number of years. He scores mostly from restoration work leading to featured picture credits, but has also done some article writing and reviewing.

We say goodbye to eight great participants who did not qualify for the final: Piotrus (submissions), Figureskatingfan (submissions), ThaddeusB (submissions), Dana boomer (submissions), Status (submissions), Ed! (submissions), 12george1 (submissions), Calvin999 (submissions). Having made it to this stage is still an excellent achievement, and you can leave with your heads held high. We hope to see you all again next year. Signups are now open for the 2014 WikiCup, which will begin on 1 January. All Wikipedians, whatever their interest or level of experience, are warmly invited to participate in next year's competition.

This last month has seen some incredible contributions; for instance, Cwmhiraeth's Starfish and Ealdgyth's Battle of Hastings—two highly important, highly viewed pages—made it to featured article status. It would be all too easy to focus solely on these stunning achievements at the expense of those participants working in lower-scoring areas, when in fact all WikiCup participants are doing excellent work. A mention of everything done is impossible, but here are a few: Last round saw the completion of several good topics (on the 1958, 1959 and 1962 Atlantic hurricane seasons) to which 12george1 had contributed. Calvin999 saw "S&M" (song), on which he has been working for several years, through to featured article status on its tenth try. Figureskatingfan continued towards her goal of a broad featured/good topic on Maya Angelou, with two featured and four good articles. ThaddeusB contributed significantly to over 20 articles which appeared on the main page's "in the news" section. Adam Cuerden continued to restore a large number of historical images, resulting in over a dozen FP credits this round alone. The WikiCup is not just about top-importance featured articles, and the work of all of these users is worthy of commendation.

Article Feedback Tool update

Hey Gobonobo. I'm contacting you because you're involved in the Article Feedback Tool in some way, either as a previous newsletter recipient or as an active user of the system. As you might have heard, a user recently anonymously disabled the feedback tool on 2,000 pages. We were unable to track or prevent this due to the lack of logging feature in AFT5. We're deeply sorry for this, as we know that quite a few users found the software very useful, and were using it on their articles.

We've now re-released the software, with the addition of a logging feature and restrictions on the ability to disable. Obviously, we're not going to automatically re-enable it on each article—we don't want to create a situation where it was enabled by users who have now moved on, and feedback would sit there unattended—but if you're interested in enabling it for your articles, it's pretty simple to do. Just go to the article you want to enable it on, click the "request feedback" link in the toolbox in the sidebar, and AFT5 will be enabled for that article.

Xenia Shestova's birth year

Hi, can you provide a reference for the birth year of Xenia Shestova? Most sources state the year as missing. I have looked in the net but could only find 1560 as her birth year on blogs and wikipedia clones Alex Bakharev (talk) 22:28, 5 September 2013 (UTC)

Sure thing. This link includes everything the reference had to say about her birth. I didn't see anything that would indicate what source they were using for the year though. Authoresses

Hi Gobonobo. I've checked the international Oxford Dictionary of English and it just says "authoress" is "a female author". It does not list it as archaic. And it seems a pity that in an era when we're trying to use gender-free instead of masculine-dominated language when we refer to both sexes, we can't use gender-specific (especially female) language when it's appropriate. I know for British English, feminine forms haven't gone as far down a dysphemism cycle, but I'm basing these changes off of Wikipedia's Manual of Style, WP:MODERNLANG, and WP:GENDER. Virtually every appearance of 'authoress' in Wikipedia is redundant, as the gender of the author is already apparent. Your reference is specifically American, whereas the ODE is international. Gender-neutral language is entirely reasonable when referring to both sexes and is taking over the historic use of e.g. "man" for "man and woman" or where professions like "fireman" now admit women, so we call them "firefighters". But it's unnecessary and sounds like political correctness or even feminist if we can't accept internationally recognised gender-specific terms like authoress being applied to female writers. I note that the Oxford Dictionary of English lists the similar term "poetess" as 'dated'. That passage I linked is identical to that which appears in The Oxford Dictionary of American Usage and Style (section D), which does indeed note that British English is more hospitable to those forms. But it also says, "words ending in -ess such as poetess and authoress are mostly archaic... at some point they acquired a derogatory tinge, and they've never been the same. The quite understandable tendency has been to avoid sex-specific terms if the person's sex is beside the point. And it usually is beside the point when identifying a poet, an author, or a waiter." On any of the articles where you reverted my changing of 'authoress' to 'author' [1][2][3], is the feminine form necessary? I think your reversions are not supported by policy and am disappointed that something so trivial "sounds like political correctness or even feminist" to your ears. Forgive me, but this is nothing to do with British English despite the view posited in the Dictionary of American Usage and Style. The ODE is international, recognizing all the dozen or so important regional variations of English, and clearly indicates if a word is regional. It does not indicate "authoress" as archaic or regional in usage, so you can hardly blame me for using the word in context when it is referring to a female writer. BTW the reason I use it is because I translate articles from German and they use the feminine form Authorin. That, of course, does not justify the use of "authoress" in English - I'm just explaining that I have no hidden agenda here; actually I am a genuine supporter of equality.

I went ahead and checked out the OED to see what they had to say about 'authoress'. It said that the term is now used "only when sex is purposely emphasized; otherwise, ...author is now used of both sexes." So, while the OED doesn't indicate whether or not the term is archaic, it is prescriptive about the manner in which it is used. On those articles where you have reverted me, I continue to believe that the gender-neutral 'author' is more appropriate, both according to the OED and WP:GNL/WP:MODLANG.

I am glad that you are a genuine supporter of equality and don't at all blame you for using the term - it's clear that gender-marking is approached differently in German and I don't want to diminish the importance of your contributions, especially the translations. Because it interests me, I've started a table over at User:Gobonobo/feminine forms to document instances of the marked feminine form in Wikipedia and I would welcome your feedback.
