Gender gap lists

Thanks Gobonobo for the extensive work you have been doing on women's missing article lists, especially your Gender Gap red list and your Gender Gap red list/Women in World History. I have found them particularly useful in identifying candidates for articles in connection with Women's History Month. This year, I am covering non-English speaking women writers in Europe. I have already embarked on the Scandinavian countries (e.g. with lists for Denmark, Norway and Sweden) and will be moving on to the countries of continental Europe soon. I was not aware of your extensive work in this area and only came across your list as a result of your thank-you message. Thank you very much Ipigott! It's encouraging to watch those red links go away. I'm finally working on the Women in World History list again–the obscure historical royalty with near-identical names tend to slow me down. I can see you're already familiar with WikiProject Women writers/missing articles, which is a great list of red links for women writers. I know of quite a number of good additional sources. As you probably realize, it is usually a good idea to make a rough background check on individual names before including them in lists of missing articles.

In connection with Scandinavian women writers, one of the best I have found is The History of Nordic Women's Literature. The searchable online version has an alphabetic index which you can limit to individual countries. Pretty well all the individuals are notable but some are perhaps a little obscure for the English Wikipedia. The English-language summaries are well written and contain useful information. Hi Gareth. I just copied the links to User:Dsp13/Redlinks/Women from this list. When I originally went through Black Women in America, I only included the biographical entries, so neither list is quite complete. Hopefully we'll be able to create articles for some of them during Black WikiHistory Month. Re: February 2015

Regarding your revert of my recent edit to the article on Jim DeMint. It is important that this information is included somewhere in the article to maintain a neutral position. The current article has no mention of this and reads like a promotional piece for DeMint. It is widely believed that Jim DeMint was responsible for the recession. In 2010, his democratic opponent Alvin Greene made this the main talking point of his campaign. Furthermore, I provided a reliable source from MSNBC to go with my edit. How can we work together to make the article more balanced in its coverage of the senator?

Presentation proposal for Wikimania 2015

How to pick up more women...

Hello! Victuallers and I have developed a proposal for a talk to be presented at Wikimania 2015. It's titled, How to pick up more women... -- as in more women editors and more women's biographies. Examples include the Edit-a-thon blitz during WikiWomen's History Month and the "new articles" work underway by WikiProject Women Writers. The Wikimania talk proposal review process has begun and there's no guarantee that this proposal will be accepted. That's where you come in. Please review our proposal and give us feedback. My proposal's main aim is "provide free of data charges access to Wikipedia" which will increase the traffic and ultimately more Womens. I would be glad if you and other members could sign up. Apollo missions: "crewed" vs. "manned"

I noticed that you made a change to the "Moon Landing" page, where "manned" and "unmanned" were changed to "crewed" and "uncrewed". While it does conform to the general policy of "Gender Neutral Language", this was a discussion on the page about a similar change from "men" to "people". There is quite a bit of support on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Spaceflight/Archive 6#Use of gender-neutral language in spaceflight-related articles for leaving at least the Apollo-era sections as they were. "Manned" and "unmanned" was the terminology in use at the time, and in fact, all of the Apollo crews were men only.

Before barging in and changing things back, I wanted to see how you felt about changing anything up to and including the Apollo-era stuff back to the way it was. For anything post-Apollo (when there were, in fact, mixed-gender crews on both American and Soviet/Russian flights), leaving the changes you made is appropriate.

Hi @Almostfm:. Thank you for dropping a note. You mentioned the WikiProject Spaceflight discussion—I see the support there for retaining gendered language in certain instances but I also see support for upholding MOS:GNL. Regardless, it looks like there was no consensus there to develop a project-specific guideline. I do see your point that the Apollo-era crews did not include any women, but the only reasons we disregard GNL is if it is somehow unclear or imprecise to use a gender-neutral term. I would argue that the meaning intended by the term at the time was "having a human crew" and not "having a male crew". As for changing just some of the instances of "crewed", GNL discourages that, saying to make the usage "internally consistent and employ one or the other exclusively". gobonobo ^{+ c} 14:05, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

That's it, the first round is done, sign-ups are closed and we're into round 2. 64 competitors made it into this round, and are now broken into eight groups of eight. The top two of each group will go through to round 3, and then the top scoring 16 "wildcards" across all groups. Round 1 saw some interesting work on some very important articles, with the round leader Freikorp (submissions) owing most of his 622 points scored to a Featured Article on the 2001 film Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within which qualified for a times-two multiplier. This is a higher score than in previous years, as Godot13 (submissions) had 500 points in 2014 at the end of round 1, and our very own judge, Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) led round 1 with 601 points in 2013.

In addition to Freikorp's work, some other important articles and pictures were improved during round one, here's a snapshot of a few of them:

• Cwmhiraeth (submissions) took Bumblebee, a level-4 vital article, to Good Article;
• AHeneen (submissions) worked-up the Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 article, also to Good Article status;
• Rodw (submissions) developed an extremely timely article to Good Article, taking Magna Carta there some 800 years after it was first sealed;
• And last but not least, Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points) worked up a number of Featured Pictures during round 1, including the 1948 one Deutsche Mark (pictured right), receiving the maximum bonus due to the number of Wikis that the related article appears in.

Betty Tompkins painting

Hi there! Thanks for sending me the message regarding Betty Tompkins' painting. I wasn't quite sure how to categorize the image permission for that painting. I spoke with her today and she was perfectly satisfied having this image (on the Wiki page, itself) present in the public domain. Since it is held in the collection of a public institution, The Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, Betty is satisfied with having the image be on the page in its current form without additional licensing. Please let me know how best to cite the image permissions, forthwith. I am still learning how to properly code here! I am also a contributor for the entry for Xaviera Simmons (another female contemporary artist), so all tips and suggestions are most welcome. Frontiers: A Journal of Women Studies

Hi, can you tell me why you moved this page? The journal's website and cover clearly call it Frontiers: A Journal of Women's Studies (which is also grammatically more correct, I think). Am I missing something? --Randykitty (talk) 18:35, 7 March 2015 (UTC)

@Randykitty: It's been 'women studies' since the 70s. Where are you seeing a cover that uses 'women's studies'? The most recent cover I can find (online) is this one from 2013. I do see that the osu website does use 'women's' quite a bit, but they're inconsistent; their contact page uses 'women'. Muse and JSTOR also use 'women studies'. You're right, I enlarged the image and see that the cover uses "women". Still, the website says "women's", so things are not unequivocal. Let's see what they will respond to your email. Mary Ann Bickerdyke

I've been working on improving the article on Mary Ann Bickerdyke, a Civil War nurse who built 300 field hospitals and later became a lawyer who helped veterans with pension claims. Can you take a look at it in light of the Wikiprojects Women's History and Feminism? Do you think it might be GA worthy? Hi TeriEmbrey. I've reformatted some of the references for the article. If you haven't already, you'll want to have a look at Wikipedia:Good article criteria. At first glance, I'd say the article needs a few improvements before it would be accepted, though I don't think it would be quickfailed. The prose could benefit from more detail, clarity and flow. The lead section will also need to be expanded to include a more detailed summary. Deacon claims responsibility for this hoax, but there is no direct evidence to support his claim; the edit in 2006 was made from an IP address associated with the publisher he worked for at the time, but that is all.
