Re:OTRS question

Two of the pictures look ok, but the Feldman one doesn't. This is not to mention the fact that there is a clear procedural problem, as you say, with non-OTRS volunteers adding OTRS tags. I will talk to Stifle, the person who dealt with the tickets, as well as the uploader. J Milburn (talk) 11:47, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

WikiProject India Newsletter Volume V, Issue no. 1 - (June 2010)

Project News

WP:IND Newsletter is back! It's been nearly a year since the last edition, but we hope to bring out issues on a more regular basis now. The India Wikiproject was set up to increasing coverage of India-related topics on Wikipedia, and over the past few months the focus has been on improving article quality. A number of the project's featured articles underwent featured article reviews over the past year. Of these, Darjeeling and Flag of India survived the review process, while the rest were demoted. During the same period, Gangtok, Harbhajan Singh, Darjeeling and Mysore were featured on the main page respectively on August 20, September 17, November 6 and December 29, 2009. Meanwhile, articles on topics as diverse as Political history of Mysore and Coorg (1565–1760), Marwari horse and Iravan were promoted as featured articles, and respectively appeared on the main page on March 25, May 17 and May 28, 2010. Consequently, the number of FA-class articles under the project's scope dropped from 67 in August 2009 to 63 in June 2010. The number of good articles, however, saw a more than 40% increase, from 91 to 130 during the same period, while the number of featured lists saw a 33% increase from 12 to 16.

Due to the recent policy changes regarding unreferenced Biographies of Living People (BLPs), an effort was started in January 2010 to source all unreferenced BLPs coming under Wikiproject India. 1200 such articles were identified initially and more were added to the list later. Due to the sourcing effort, the number of Indian unreferenced BLPs is down to 565 currently. During February-April 2010, There was a large scale disruption of Kerala related articles by a Thrissur based IP vandal. Editing from a dynamic IP BSNL connection, the vandal changed dates of birth, death and ages of a number of Malayalam and Tamil film actors. Later he added a few international biographies to his list. He also marked some living people like Arvind Swamy as dead. A month long range block was imposed on his IP range two times and each time he came back to vandalise dates once the block expired. Currently the range has been blocked for three months till September 11, 2010.

Current proposals and discussions
  • A discussion is underway here to reach a consensus regarding the use of Indian number names (lakh, crore etc.) in Wikipedia articles. Please participate and add your comments.
  • A discussion is in progress here in order to determine whether non-Western (including Indian) forms of classical music should be referred to by the nomenclature of art music instead of classical music. Please participate and add your comments.
  • Watchlist the Articles for Deletions page for India related discussions. Opinions from more Indian Wikipedians are required in many of the discussions.

If you've just joined, add your name to the Members section of WikiProject India. You'll get a mention in the next issue of the Newsletter and get it delivered as desired. Also, please include your own promotions and awards in future issues. Don't be shy!

Lastly, this is your newsletter and you can be involved in the creation of the next issue (Issue 2 – (July 2010)). Any and all contributions are welcome. Simply let yourself be known to any of the undersigned, or just start editing!

Harel Skaat

Hello, thanks for your input on the Harel Skaat article. I apologize because I just noticed your post today. I would like to add a few comments to your suggestions.

      • Hi, a few notes:many citations are duplicates and should be combined

Another reviewer also pointed this out and I believe I have fixed this. He also pointed out that I have several citations after a sentence and wondered if they were not duplicates. They aren't. I included them at the end of the sentence because I personally don't like a sentence being interrupted by citations. However, I've in the case of quotes, I've included the citations directly after the quote.

      • book citations need a page number

I have added these. It was my understanding that you need to include a page number only for direct quotes (APA style)

      • the Hebrew wikipedia is not a reliable source

This was also mentioned by the other reviewer and I eliminated this. The problem is that chart information on popular Israel music is apparently non-existent on the Internet.

      • what makes shiron.net, best-singers.co.il (and others) reliable sources? Hebrew sources should be noted as such, in citation templates there is a language parameter

I have added the language parameter as you have suggested. I deleted jewishtheater.com as a source. I know that I did use best-singers.co.il as a source at one time, but I don't see where I have it currently listed now. I believe that Shiron.net is a reliable source because it complies with copyright laws and pays Israeli artists fees for listing the lyrics so there is an incentive for the artists to participate, and this information has been noted Ynet, and the site has been written about (not negatively) in other reliable sources. In your comment about others, I'm not sure what you mean. Eurovision.tv and the other Eurovision related websites are news sites dedicated solely to news about the Eurovision Song Contest. They cover detailed information and conduct interviews, and if I am not mistaken their news stories have sometimes been covered by reliable sources. I would have to check on this to verify it. I believe Ynet, Nana, the Jerusalem Post, and Haaretz. to be among the most reliable and authoritative news sources in Israel.

Thank you once again for your feedback. I really appreciate your suggestions and if you have any questions or comments please don't hesitate to let me know. Take care. Hjquazimoto (talk) 12:59, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

Crittenden

I know the article is getting long, and I am also concerned about it. My plan is to finish working through the Kirwan biography, then copyedit the entire article. I hope I can get it to a manageable size, but the guy was U.S. AG twice, a Senator four times, a U.S. Rep. once, and served a short term as governor. The Kirwan biography is 400+ pages. Distilling and condensing that will be a challenge. All that said, Paul E. Patton, which I also worked on, is 61K and was promoted to GA in a reasonably short amount of time. Crittenden's has been by far the most challenging of the Kentucky governor articles I've worked on, and any suggestions you have are welcome. I would like to eventually take the article to GA and FA. I worry about over-reliance on Kirwan, but the volume of tangential information out there about Crittenden is overwhelming. Acdixon (talk contribs count) 14:42, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

Andreas Stenschke

Excuse me Hekerui, but the picture of Andreas Stenschke on his English and German Wiki page is indeed properly put forth and went through the correct process when I put the article together last year. The permission to use the photo was sent to the Wiki authorities by Andreas Stenschke himself and has been properly certified for use on the English and German Stenschke pages, so I don't know by what authority you are attempting to remove the photo.Andymickey (talk) 09:28, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

The image File:Andreas main shot.jpg is properly licensed. I had nominated the image File:Andreas alone.jpg for lacking a license. You may be confusing the two. File:Andreas alone.jpg was deleted last week because no copyright information was added after a week, the other image is in use. Hekerui (talk) 09:32, 19 July 2010 (UTC)
Thank you for the clarification and the relief (I had no email message alerting me to your undertaking and only just saw it when I happened on the Wiki page, which I don't visit all that often). However, I still don't understand what that Andreas photo was, unless it was a stranded version of many photos that were originally in the article, which were quickly removed when it was suggested that I not put more than one photo in the article. I remember specifically that all were deleted, but perhaps this one oddly remained. Unless someone else put it in. I certainly didn't do so recently, thus it probably was one that was never cleared out when your fellow supervisors did their excisions. Am I right?Andymickey (talk) 09:48, 19 July 2010 (UTC)
It was a frontal photo of Stenschke, not as sharp as the current one, and amateurish. It lacked copyright information. However, just to correct something you heard, of course it is fine to use several images of a person in an article, as long as the photos don't overwhelm the text (compare the composition of the article on Brad Pitt). So if you know someone who would release a photo he/she took under a free license feel free to upload it - just make sure the info is complete and evidence of the permission is provided. Feel free to ask me for help if needed. If you yourself have taken an image that illustrates an article and you want to release it you can do that too and in that case you don't need to send an email to permissions. Regards Hekerui (talk) 10:06, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

Connie Talbot

Sorry, but what on Earth is this? What does it add to the article? Is there some kind of discussion somewhere that has concluded that this is useful? J Milburn (talk) 23:33, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

Nope, sorry, not seeing it. Surely this would be more suitable as something like Template:Persondata? As in, not visible to the reader? Not as yet another template full of external links tagged on to the bottom of an article... Again, and I appreciate this may sound confrontational, but under what authority are you adding this? J Milburn (talk) 23:41, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
The point I'm making about "under what authority" is, basically, has there been discussion about this? Or are you adding this to articles purely because you feel it will be useful? J Milburn (talk) 00:02, 24 July 2010 (UTC)
I would have no problem with it if it was similar to (or even within) Template:Persondata. I just wouldn't care. However, this adds another template and more external links to the bottom of an article- it's not clear what it is or what it is adding, and the non-standard design really draws the eye. Something like this definitely needs central discussion- you can't just go around adding this sort of thing to articles. I'm reverting the addition to Connie Talbot. The First Flight

You can't just delist an article that is a GA. It has to go through Wikipedia:Good article reassessment by the Wikpedia community. Candyo32 19:12, 4 August 2010 (UTC)

Delisting is not like listing an article. It can't just be taken upon yourself. This is just your opinion, and since the article is already listed, it is up for the community to give consensus. All of this stuff about the original editor is coming out of nowhere. We had no problem with that review or any other review he conducted for me see Talk:The First Flight/GA1, it was quick and easy. Candyo32 19:18, 4 August 2010 (UTC)
I still don't understand this nonsense about me attacking an editor in that we never had a conversation and I just fixed the image for the article and that was it. I also do not see what you claimed was in your talk archives. Candyo32 19:29, 4 August 2010 (UTC)
I left replies on the talk page of the article, and are you sure it was referring to my review? Because I had been through I think about 4+ or more GA reviews with SMasters and all just had several mistakes and we fixed them up and they passed so I'm kind of confused. And sorry if I acted rude or anything, including deleting your comments, I was just stunned by all the recent developments. Candyo32 19:39, 4 August 2010 (UTC)
Yeah I take that into consideration and try to be careful about that, but it thought it was generally fine as long as it was used with an inline citation. Candyo32 21:12, 4 August 2010 (UTC)
Well I thought this would be plagarism if you are using something that the article or writer of the article says themselves. However the only direct quotes I use is from the artist themselves. Candyo32 01:51, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

Re:Ram Narayan IPA

Hi Hekerui, Good point. I'm guessing you think that Narayan here should be two syllables closed with a coda nasal, resulting in super-heavy final syllable with a diphthong as nucleus? In other words: how on earth did I get to adopt these silly remarks without me even knowing it (I only wanted to adopt the userboxes :))? And about JB: I had never heard about him, but hail to Wikipedia (or, better said, the internal links ;)), via one way or the other I came across 'his' page. In a short time of period I reviewed his music, this Wiki-page, his blog... Although I can't be pushed away from my Wikipedia standpoints, I must admit that I do feel for him. :s I really think that, even if you dig up Freud and Jung together, there is quite some work to do with him, and how he looks at the world. At a strange way I really hope that he can find his release via music. Nevertheless, I stay with all my Wiki-points. Ahmadinejad wouldn't be granted some censorship either, even if he begged for it. And whether he likes it or not; any person that means 'something to this world' can have his/ her own wikipage. Apparently, he made it to this level. If I were him, I would feel proud about it, instead of agitated. :s :) Best wishes in return, Robster1983 (talk) 21:53, 7 August 2010 (UTC)

No problem. I can understand that perhaps you were annoyed and said some things in haste, and it's important not to try to make it a witch hunt or anything (not that that's what you were trying to do). I do see a problem though since the issue doesn't just affect communication during a review, but how well criterion 1 is assessed. Anyway, I'll keep an eye out for any further discussion.
