MoTM of issue XLIV

edit

I have a proposal that there is should be two MoTMs instead of one of this edition. However, because of Destroyera's sockpuppetry, I'm going to abandon that proposal in favor of making Robloxsupersuperhappyface MoTM of the edition. I have insisting for some weeks now that Super should be MoTM, because his contributions for this project is nothing more than amazing. SMB99thx my edits! 23:02, 29 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

@SMB99thx: we should still have a 2nd MoTM. Either you or Chicdat. HurricaneTracker495 (talk) 00:03, 30 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
Not me, but definitely Chicdat. SMB99thx my edits! 00:07, 30 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
By the way, I'm also requesting opinion about you regarding sockpuppetry within this WikiProject, as we have some editors who contributed to this project was exposed as sockpuppeteers. Destroyeraa (dumb sockpuppetry, I acknowledge), Cristianpogi678 (to avoid block), Wyatt2049 (LTA) and IPhonehurricane95 (LTA) comes to mind. SMB99thx my edits! 03:55, 30 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

I agree we should make Super the MotM. It should really be MOTE (member of the edition), since we only award one each newsletter. That's because there aren't a ton of users, and the newsletter is just a fun thing to do. I'm surprised it's caught on so much this year! And if anyone would like to work on it monthly, then by all means go ahead :) I'm thankful that there is a lot of new interest in the project, and I don't want to lose editors just because the active hurricane season is over. SMB99thx, keep up what you're doing, your enthusiasm is fantastic, and I noticed you saying no to new projects. Feel free to write up the MoTM blurb, and if you'd even want to send it out, I'd really appreciate it! ^_^ I've just been the one doing it because I wanted to make sure it got done, but I'm rather busy IRL (I got a leak in my apartment). ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 01:36, 1 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

I'm going to write that MoTM blurb as well as sending it out to new members, CyclonicallyDeranged, and all others. Also, I believe that this newsletter shouldn't be a monthly newsletter. I think it should be bi-monthly as usual, or even tri-monthly newsletter, though I say that it should be bi-monthly until issue 50, then issues afterwards will be made in three months. SMB99thx my edits! 02:44, 1 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Next Steps...

  Update 2018 Pacific hurricane season with Bud's impact - November 30/December 1
  Hurricane Leslie (2018) - December
Timeline of the 2018 Pacific hurricane season - December
  Rewrite/improve Hurricane Olivia (2018) - December
  Hurricane Bud (2018) - December/January
  Tropical Storm Gordon (2018) - December/January
  2018 Pacific hurricane season - January/February
What do you think about that plan? NoahTalk 13:58, 30 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
For an Atlantic FT, we would need more than my planned articles at FA in order to complete it. Michael's Met, Leslie, Gordon, Michael in FL, and Michael would be 5. The latter two won't be easy to get there for sure. The completed timeline would put us at 6. We would need a 7th (although preferably we would have more than the minimal requirement for safety) for a majority featured. NoahTalk 21:41, 30 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
I personally think you should go for FTC sooner than later for 2018. Olivia isn't really needed as an FA, as impressive as it would be to have an all featured FT. As for the Atlantic, Michael's Met and FL sub-article wouldn't count toward the whole topic (since they both aren't linked from the button bar), so we'd only need the five. Destroyeraa is interested in getting Beryl and Chris to FA. We have Gordon, Michael, the timeline, Leslie, and ideally Florence. Getting Florence and Michael to GA wouldn't be much different than FA, considering how notable the storms are. Add in Alberto/Beryl/Chris and we're good. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 21:47, 30 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
Uh... January/February (which I have listed above for that FTC icon) is the earliest because the timeline isn't done. Nova, KN, and I will finish it this upcoming month and nom it. I just have to get Olivia fixed up because it has some met issues and may have more details out there for impact. I have gotten a lot better at finding impact since December 2018 :P EDIT: Actually, the button bar lists the met histories below their respective storm! NoahTalk 21:52, 30 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
That works. Yea for sure you've gotten better! Especialmente en español. I'm glad Olivia will get more love then before the FT. As for the button bars, yea, they mention the history, but not Michael's FL impacts, which would be too much for the bar. Something to keep in mind for the inevitable FT. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 23:47, 30 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

I know you did the GAN, but would you be able to provide any more feedback at FAC? I don't want it to fail simply because nobody is reviewing articles. I am trying to clear backlogs and do some reviews myself. NoahTalk 22:57, 8 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

I say we merge this and don't split Florida because that would be like splitting off the Galveston impact for an article mainly about that. Besides the fact that the section is currently bloated per JR. NoahTalk 14:11, 13 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Idk about you, but I still think the impact needs expansion from where it is at. NoahTalk 16:00, 9 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
I agree, it seems on the short side for a tropical cyclone affecting an English-speaking country. I'd expect more flood damage. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:03, 9 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Leslie

edit

Uh... Leslie may take a decent amount of time to write and will probably be huge word-wise once done. This will probably be above 100 sources once complete. It did ≥500M and killed ≥17. NoahTalk 23:05, 9 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

The way things are going on my end rn... Im now expecting 100-150 impact sources on top of the 25-40 met sources. NoahTalk 23:58, 9 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
Okay... will definitely be >150 for total sources... I ended the research with 149 potential sources between preps, impact, and aftermath. The storm was far worse than I thought impact-wise just by how I skimmed through the impact. NoahTalk 02:32, 10 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
I had a feeling Hurricane Noah (talk · contribs) that Leslie would be a biggish storm! It had all of the impacts of a tropical cyclone and a European windstorm, kinda Hurricane Nadine (2012) meets Hurricane Charley (1986). ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:54, 10 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

  The Barnstar of Diligence
For your nearly 16 years of contributions to Wikipedia, especially in the area of tropical cyclones. And also your efforts in mentoring or coaching numerous new editors at WPTC. I know that there were times when things went south, and even experiences that left you wanting to quit, but you're still here and you're still helping train the newest crop of WPTC editors. And thank you once again for welcoming me and the other newer users, and for being so kind to us, even for those of us who started out disruptive (albeit unintentionally) or rough around the edges. You've helped raise and retain many more editors than you realize. I can't think you enough for all you've done. You deserve this barnstar. 2018 EPAC

Im going to hammer out an Olivia rewrite to fix issues that arose after JTWC and CPHC BT came out. I also found some more impact to add to the article using the storm events database. NoahTalk 03:34, 20 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Would you be able to help with finding impact? The storm did 25M, but I am not finding very many sources reporting damage. I will be adding in some storm events database reports as a crutch, but it seems rather sparse. I am working in a sandbox right now. Really needs more detail for the impact. KN did find one source that details an area with complete destruction. NoahTalk 02:45, 22 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Proposal

edit

Hi Hurricanehink, I hope you are healthy and safe. I am proposing an experimental game for WPTC similar to the Wikicup. User:Destroyeraa/Cyclone Cup. Any thoughts? ~ Destroyeraa🌀🇺🇸 16:18, 13 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hiya Destroyeraa (talk · contribs), I'm doing really well! I got a job and I've been focusing on my music this year, which is why I haven't been editing lately (need to get into the new swing of things). If you think there's enough interest outside of the regular cup, I'd say go for it. However, I notice a few users have taken Wikibreaks recently. Maybe because the US has gotten so insane over the last week, or maybe just RL kicking in, taking away from Wiki time. This could be a good idea starting with the next hurricane season, as an incentive for new users, getting them editing more than just the main season article. Just a thought. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 17:06, 13 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
Great! I hope you are doing well in your music. I've been thinking that since we as a project just got a bunch of new(ish) users, including some who are interested in promoting articles, I though that the downtime/off-season would be a nice time to rack up some GAs/FAs. The TCRs are gradually rolling in, and there is a good number of articles of the 2020 atl season that need promotion. We have a great team of users, and I believe that this will encourage more users to get into the promotion process. ~ Destroyeraa🌀🇺🇸 19:07, 13 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanks so much! And yea, if people get onboard with it, then that's great, more GA's and FA's. If it doesn't take off, no worries, maybe try again in a few months. Hopefully the new users take to it :) ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 20:58, 13 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Tips and thoughts ?

Hi, Hink! It's been a while. With the lack of TCs lately I got bored and began doing some edits in the 2001 PTS article. I find it a bit weird how the 2002 and 2003 PTS articles are FA and GA while the seasons around it are just.. mostly blank. So perhaps maybe my other goal for the year is to get them (2000, 2001, 2004-07) up to standard? Any tips on what I could do with the edits I have done in the 2001 article? WikiCup 2021 March newsletter

edit

Round 1 of the competition has finished; it was a high-scoring round with 21 contestants scoring more than 100 points. Everyone with a positive score moves on to Round 2, with 55 contestants qualifying. You will need to finish among the top thirty-two contestants in Round 2 if you are to qualify for Round 3. Our top scorers in Round 1 were:

  •   Epicgenius led the field with a featured article, nine good articles and an assortment of other submissions, specialising on buildings and locations in New York, for a total of 945 points.
  •   Bloom6132 was close behind with 896 points, largely gained from 71 "In the news" items, mostly recent deaths.
  •   ImaginesTigers, who has been editing Wikipedia for less than a year, was in third place with 711 points, much helped by bringing League of Legends to featured article status, exemplifying how bonus points can boost a contestant's score.
  •   Amakuru came next with 708 points, Kigali being another featured article that scored maximum bonus points.
  •   Ktin, new to the WikiCup, was in fifth place with 523 points, garnered from 15 DYKs and 34 "In the news" items.
  •   The Rambling Man scored 511 points, many from featured article candidate reviews and from football related DYKs.
  •   Gog the Mild, last year's runner-up, came next with 498 points, from a featured article and numerous featured article candidate reviews.
  •   Hog Farm, at 452, scored for a featured article, four good articles and a number of reviews.
  •   Le Panini, another newcomer to the WikiCup, scored 438 for a featured article and three good articles.
  •   Lee Vilenski, last year's champion, scored 332 points, from a featured article and various other sport-related topics.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. In Round 1, contestants achieved eight featured articles, three featured lists and one featured picture, as well as around two hundred DYKs and twenty-seven ITNs. They completed 97 good article reviews, nearly double the 52 good articles they claimed. Contestants also claimed for 135 featured article and featured list candidate reviews. There is no longer a requirement to mention your WikiCup participation when undertaking these reviews.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. New Articles....

edit

While I await the return of my co-writer for a couple of 2018 articles, I decided to take a look at the 2019 Pacific hurricane season. To be honest, I really enjoy the EPAC storms more than other areas. I looked at a couple of systems for now to see what there was. Ironically, Ivo caught my eye when I searched for PTC 17-E as a lot of impact showed up for it even though it wasn't that close to land. On the flip side, Priscilla doesn't have diddly squat even though it struck the coast... NoahTalk 12:58, 18 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Ugh I was hoping I'd have more time for some editing. I'm so busy these days working a job I hate, I've been sick off and on, and I'm working on some personal projects. I'm glad you're keeping up the new articles. I should have some more time/desire for editing - I was in a bad place with a job I was doing, but I'm switching things up. Hopefully that means more editing, but if not, just know that I'm really proud of the work you've done on here. You're certainly helping inspire the next generation of writers! ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:40, 7 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
New Articles that will be coming...
  • Uh... I'm beginning to think I uncovered a really bad storm that everyone ignored. I am finding similar aftermath to that of Willa and 19-E! However, there are no damage estimates from AON and the NHC said no impact occurred. NoahTalk 14:49, 20 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

WP Weather

edit

If you have any time tonight, could you please create a proto-project page for WP weather? At least something temporary for now? I am starting with climate articles since the project is defunct and has 0 members. I made a project talkpage banner and am creating some quality categories right now. NoahTalk 00:35, 7 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Hurricane Noah:, thanks for taking some of the initiative. I wrote my thoughts down here. I focused on what the goals are. I think that'll help focus what the point of all of this is. Combining templates and pages is a lot of work, but if there's purpose behind it, then it's worth it. I believe (and pushed as such) that there should be lists on every weather type around the world, and for every year. So a hurricane hitting Florida would be listed in the hurricane season, and in List of Florida hurricanes, and if it was bad enough, Weather of 2021. A deadly flood in Indonesia (such as what's going on now) would be listed in Floods in 2021 (to be created), List of Indonesia floods, and because the floods were related to a tropical cyclone, Cyclone Seroja would be listed in the Australian season, List of Indonesia tropical cyclones, and, if it was record-breaking or significant enough, the main Weather of 2021 article. Does that make sense? Does that seem like a plan? What are we missing? ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 03:00, 7 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, that seems to be good. Hopefully, Template:WikiProject Weather is good. I set up the class mask for it with all the cats and associated talkpage (not for task forces). I went ahead and folded the climate project since it had zero members and zero articles underneath it. I keep telling some of the newer members that this won't be done fast by any means and will be a multi-month process to complete. That being said, I will begin to transfer the climate articles from WP Met to the new project relatively soon. NoahTalk 03:05, 7 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Hey, I had LightandDark move the weather page over the redirect since people started to notice the internal structure. I'm going to start moving over Climate articles by adding the WP weather box and removing the WP met one. We should be able to FINALLY get a detailed list of exactly how many climate articles we have! NoahTalk 22:27, 8 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Just wondering what you think about the changes I have implemented since we began working on the merger. I blue-linked most of the major internal structure, but more needs to be done with it. I will now continue my work of merging in Climate articles and then the rest of WP Met. NoahTalk 02:34, 13 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Tropical cyclone

edit

What do you think about the recent additions I made to TC? How does the point on OHC look (the first factor I discussed)? My plan is to list out all the factors and how they influence intensity. I then want to have a subsection about formation underneath the factors, then the general intensification/RI subsection comes next, and lastly the section on dissipation. I plan to have dissipation be condensed since factors will discuss some of that content. Then the methods subsection which I added will be under all of the previous ones I mentioned. The last subsection I think we should have under intensity is scales. Scales are an intensity classification. Full plan is here. NoahTalk 19:18, 27 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

WikiCup 2021 May newsletter

edit

The second round of the 2021 WikiCup has now finished; it was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 61 points to advance to Round 3. There were some impressive efforts in the round, with the top eight contestants all scoring more than 400 points. A large number of the points came from the 12 featured articles and the 110 good articles achieved in total by contestants, as well as the 216 good article reviews they performed; the GAN backlog drive and the stay-at-home imperative during the COVID-19 pandemic may have been partially responsible for these impressive figures.

Our top scorers in Round 2 were:

  •   The Rambling Man, with 2963 points from three featured articles, 20 featured article reviews, 37 good articles, 73 good article reviews, as well as 22 DYKs.
  •   Epicgenius, with 1718 points from one featured article, 29 good articles, 16 DYKs and plenty of bonus points.
  •   Bloom6132, with 990 points from 13 DYKs and 64 "In the news" items, mostly recent deaths.
  •   Hog Farm, with 834 points from two featured articles, five good articles, 14 featured article reviews and 15 good article reviews.
  •   Gog the Mild, with 524 points from two featured articles and four featured article reviews.
  •   Lee Vilenski, with 501 points from one featured article, three good articles, six featured article reviews and 25 good article reviews.
  •   Sammi Brie, with 485 points from four good articles, eight good article reviews and 27 DYKs, on US radio and television stations.
  •   Ktin, with 436 points from four good articles, seven DYKs and 11 "In the news" items.

Please remember that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of Round 2 but before the start of Round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in Round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (except for at the end of each round, when you must claim them before the cut-off date/time). When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. edit

I still have several dozen more impact sources to go before User:Hurricane Noah/Hurricane Leslie (2018) is complete. Should become a sizable article. NoahTalk 18:51, 13 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

I merged everything over into the article and it's already above 70k bytes (about 3000 words). I'm guessing the article will be a similar size or larger than Willa. The met has 6 paragraphs, but that isn't surprising considering the first forecasts were on September 19 and it lasted until October 16 + all the twists and turns it took. I still have 78 more impact links to check for material. Appears Portugal got hit pretty badly. Jo-Jo Eumerus pointed out some good scholarly articles too. NoahTalk 16:07, 15 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Tropical Storm Hernan

edit

Hey Hink, I know you've had a lot of experience in making featured articles on Wikipedia. I am currently working on making the article Tropical Storm Hernan (2020) A-class prose in preparation for an FA review. When you have time, could you take a look at the article to see what I could do to make it feature-worthy? Thanks! JayTee🐦 20:52, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

@JayTee32: - I left my review on the talk page. The main difference between GA and FA is the level of detail. The prose needs to be on point. There can't be anything that's up in the air, and the prose all needs to be streamlined and make sense. I hope my review helps - please reach out if you have any questions! ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:04, 4 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanks a lot! I'll revise the page to make it more to the FAC standard, and see if I can find any more sources to add to the impact. I'll contact again when these are done and I feel it is A-worthy. JayTee🐦 15:24, 4 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Hey Hink, I just added an A-class review to the talk-page banner for Hernan; what do I do from here? This is my first A-nomination, so I want to complete it correctly. Thank you! JayTee🕊️🇺🇸 07:49, 11 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Technically, you should add it to the ACR process, but there aren't many users. I suggest reaching out to more active users if you want to get the article to A-class. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:40, 27 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hurricane Emily (1993) scheduled for TFA

edit

This is to let you know that the Hurricane Emily (1993) article has been scheduled as today's featured article for July 22, 2021. Please check the article needs no amendments. If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/July 22, 2021, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1000 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so.

For Featured Articles promoted recently, there will be an existing blurb linked from the FAC talk page, which is likely to be transferred to the TFA page by a coordinator at some point.

We suggest that you watchlist Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors from the day before this appears on Main Page. Thanks! Jimfbleak - talk to me? 15:28, 14 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

WikiCup 2021 September newsletter

edit

The fourth round of the competition has finished with over 500 points being required to qualify for the final round. It was a hotly competitive round with two contestants,   The Rambling Man and   Epicgenius, each scoring over 3000 points, and six contestants scoring over 1000. All but one of the finalists achieved one or more FAs during the round, the exception being   Bloom6132 who demonstrated that 61 "in the news" items produces an impressive number of points. Other contestants who made it to the final are   Gog the Mild,   Lee Vilenski,   BennyOnTheLoose,   Amakuru and   Hog Farm. However, all their points are now swept away and everyone starts afresh in the final round.

Round 4 saw the achievement of 18 featured articles and 157 good articles.   Bilorv scored for a 25-article good topic on Black Mirror but narrowly missed out on qualifying for the final round. There was enthusiasm for FARs, with 89 being performed, and there were 63 GARs and around 100 DYKs during the round. As we start round 5, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it to the final round; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. For other contestants, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. WikiCup 2021 November newsletter

The WikiCup is over for another year and the finalists can relax! Our Champion this year is   The Rambling Man (submissions), who amassed over 5000 points in the final round, achieving 8 featured articles and almost 500 reviews. It was a very competitive round; seven of the finalists achieved over 1000 points in the round (enough to win the 2019 contest), and three scored over 3000 (enough to win the 2020 event). Our 2021 finalists and their scores were:

  1.   The Rambling Man (submissions) with 5072 points
  2.   Lee Vilenski (submissions) with 3276 points
  3.   Amakuru (submissions) with 3197 points
  4.   Epicgenius (submissions) with 1611 points
  5.   Gog the Mild (submissions) with 1571 points
  6.   BennyOnTheLoose (submissions) with 1420 points
  7.   Hog Farm (submissions) with 1043 points
  8.   Bloom6132 (submissions) with 528 points

All those who reached the final round will win awards. The following special awards will be made based on high performance in particular areas of content creation and review. Awards will be handed out in the next few days.

Congratulations to everyone who participated in this year's WikiCup, whether they made it to the final round or not, and particular congratulations to the newcomers to the WikiCup, some of whom did very well. @Hurricane Noah: - Alright, I did it, but only on the condition that you'll run for adminship. I'll be your first support if you run. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 21:46, 2 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
(and yes, that's a formal suggestion for a RFA. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 21:48, 2 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
I really do appreciate your recommendation and I have thought about running before as well. Several people stated last year I would fail due to lack of diversification across WP. I worry that I simply don't fit in with the current expectation that an admin must be able to do everything. I honestly blame these increasing expectations for the lack of RfAs and the loss of admins in recent years. The mop wasnt intended to be a big deal but it certainly is being treated like one now. I also think I could use more experience in policy as I realize I lack experience in some policy areas. NoahTalk 23:54, 2 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Are you aware that the current admin crowd is 10% smaller than it was a year ago? The fact is, I think you can be trusted with the tools, based on your diverse and impressive work of articles written, and how much you've engaged across Wikipedia, showing a good temper, ambitious goals, and a general belief in this crazy project of Wikipedia. We all could use more experience, sure, but your experience shows a lot of traits in a good administrator (and feel free to quote this in your upcoming RFA). You have 14 featured articles/lists. You're a prolific editor, with over 20,000 edits to your name - have you been reverted that often? You've never been blocked. Have you ever been in any edit wars or had spats with other users? If not, then you're a really good model of editor, the type who can handle the tools. Some people leery might be because you don't use an edit summary enough (or you're a bit vague, just "r" or "d"), so that's something you could work on. It's ultimately up to you. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 00:17, 3 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
I came to check up about these weather template deletions and just wanted to chime in here, Hurricane Noah. Yes, some editors voting at an RfA want to see content creation, others want to see participation at AfDs, others want experience in admin-related areas and noticeboards, I'm 100% certain that there is no perfect candidate and you can't be all things to all prospective voters. I think, generally, most editors coming to an RfA want to see well-rounded editing experience, a feeling that you make good decisions and can be trusted (kind of intangible stuff) and to see that you can handle conflicts in a calm and decisive manner. I think the most underrated question is the one that asks if you have had disputes with other editors. Some candidates seem to think the correct answer is "No, never!" but what voters actually want to know is that when there is conflict (and there is when you are an admin), that you handle it fairly. So, it's important to have examples where you have successfully resolved a dispute either between yourself and another editor or between other editors. I think you probably had your fair share of that on any WikiProject work you did.
My only last advice is when you do run (and I hope it's "when" and not "if"), it can be a long 7 days. Do not schedule an RfA at a time when you have anything stressful going on in your life. It can be humbling to be scrutinized like you are in an RfA (it was for me) and so it's important to be at full strength. Also, respected nominators never hurt! I know I have supported candidates I didn't know well because I trusted the word of those nominators who spoke on their behalf. Good luck! Liz Read! Talk! 02:14, 3 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
If you do run, you'll be Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Ergo Sum. 🐔dat (talk) 11:33, 4 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

How we will see unregistered users

edit

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Attribution when merging

edit

Hi there, Hurricanehink! Just a friendly reminder that pages need to be properly attributed when merging. Be sure to leave a link to the original content, along with a link to it's page history (usually provided by the Special:PageHistory redirect special page). This ensures that the authors of the source article are still attributed (at least as far as the CC BY-SA 3.0 license is concerned). We require attribution if there are any other editors who have contributed to the article, and I do see a few edits by other users which were merged into the Typhoon Durian article. Attribution would not be required if you had merged using an earlier version of the article without any contributions from other editors (or if all editors of the page agreed to stop requiring attribution for their edits to the article, which is usually unlikely). WikiCup 2022 March newsletter

edit

And so ends the first round of the WikiCup. Last year anyone who scored more than zero points moved on to Round 2, but this was not the case this year, and a score of 13 or more was required to proceed. The top scorers in Round 1 were:

  •   Epicgenius, a finalist last year, who led the field with 1906 points, gained from 32 GAs and 19 DYKs, all on the topic of New York buildings.
  •   AryKun, new to the contest, was second with 1588 points, having achieved 2 FAs, 11 GAs and various other submissions, mostly on the subject of birds.
  •   Bloom6132, a WikiCup veteran, was in third place with 682 points, garnered from 51 In the news items and several DYKs.
  •   GhostRiver was close behind with 679 points, gained from achieving 12 GAs, mostly on ice hockey players, and 35 GARs.
  •   Kavyansh.Singh was in fifth place with 551 points, with an FA, a FL, and many reviews.
  •   SounderBruce was next with 454 points, gained from an FA and various other submissions, mostly on United States highways.
  •   Ktin, another WikiCup veteran, was in seventh place with 412 points, mostly gained from In the news items.

These contestants, like all the others who qualified for Round 2, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. Between them, contestants completed reviews of a large number of good articles as the contest ran concurrently with a GAN backlog drive. Well done all! To qualify for Round 3, contestants will need to finish Round 2 among the top thirty-two participants.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Anything that should have been claimed for in Round 1 is no longer eligible for points. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.

Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! WikiCup 2022 May newsletter

edit

The second round of the 2022 WikiCup has now finished. It was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 115 points to advance to round 3. There were some very impressive efforts in round 2, with the top seven contestants all scoring more than 500 points. A large number of the points came from the 11 featured articles and the 79 good articles achieved in total by contestants.

Our top scorers in round 2 were:

  1.   Epicgenius, with 1264 points from 2 featured article, 4 good articles and 18 DYKs. Epicgenius was a finalist last year but has now withdrawn from the contest as he pursues a new career path.
  2.   AryKun, with 1172 points from two featured articles, one good article and a substantial number of featured article and good article reviews.
  3.   Bloom6132, with 605 points from 44 in the news items and 4 DYKs.
  4.   Sammi Brie, with 573 points from 8 GAs and 21 DYKs.
  5.   Ealdgyth, with 567 points from 11 GAs and 34 good and featured article reviews.
  6.   Panini!, with 549 points from 1 FA, 4 GAs and several other sources.
  7.   Lee Vilenski, with 545 points from 1 FA, 4 GAs and a number of reviews.

The rules for featured and good article reviews require the review to be of sufficient length; brief quick fails and very short reviews will generally not be awarded points. Remember also that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

Good luck! Re:Consistency re: wind speeds

edit

I don't see why it couldn't be a standard to present windspeeds in knots and then let Wikipedia convert template, convert them in the fashion I showed on Chicdats talkpage regardless of any rounding issues. This way TC articles would not become inaccurate if an editor was to come along and apply the convert template, without adding any parameters such as the round=5 and would save a lot of drama. The same could be done with Nautical Miles with the parameters becoming nmi km and mi instead of kn, km/h & mph.Jason Rees (talk) 21:55, 28 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

The third round of the 2022 WikiCup has now come to an end. Each of the sixteen contestants who made it into the fourth round had at least 180 points, which is a lower figure than last year when 294 points were needed to progress to round 4. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

  •   BennyOnTheLoose, with 746 points, a tally built both on snooker and other sports topics, and on more general subjects.
  •   Bloom6132, with 683 points, garnered mostly from "In the news" items and related DYKs.

First, this small project I mentioned involves Talk:Tropical Storm Narda (2019)... A storm that has been neglected for the past THREE YEARS! This would be the third article I have done for that season. Would you have time to take a look at Cyclone Fakir? I want to make sure it is okay before I try to run it through the process. edit

A tag has been placed on Category:Pacific typhoon set index articles indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself. Liz Read! WikiCup 2022 September newsletter

edit

The fourth round of the WikiCup has now finished. 383 points were required to reach the final, and the new round has got off to a flying start with all finalists already scoring. In round 4, Bloom6132 with 939 points was the highest points-scorer, with a combination of DYKs and In the news items, followed by BennyOnTheLoose, Sammi Brie and Lee Vilenski. The points of all contestants are swept away as we start afresh for the final round.

At this stage, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. For the remaining competitors, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them, and importantly, before the deadline on October 31st!

If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. The judges are Sturmvogel 66 and Cwmhiraeth. WikiCup 2022 November newsletter

edit

The 2022 WikiCup has drawn to a close with the final round going down to the wire. The 2022 champion is

  •   Lee Vilenski (1752 points), who won in 2020 and was runner up in both 2019 and last year. In the final round he achieved 3 FAs and 15 GAs, mostly on cue sports. He was closely followed by
  •   Bloom6132 (1732), who specialised in "In the news" items and DYKs, and who has reached the final round of the Cup for the past three years. Next was
  •   BennyOnTheLoose (1238), another cue sports enthusiast, also interested in songs, followed by
  •   Muboshgu (1082), an "In the news" contributor, a seasoned contestant who first took part in the Cup ten years ago. Other finalists were
  •   Sammi Brie (930), who scored with a featured article, good articles and DYKs on TV and radio stations,
  •   Kavyansh.Singh (370), who created various articles on famous Americans, including an FA on Louis H. Bean, famed for his prediction of election outcomes. Next was
  •   PCN02WPS (292), who scored with good articles and DYKs on sporting and other topics and
  •   Z1720 (25) who had DYKs on various topics including historic Canadians.

During the WikiCup, contestants achieved 37 featured articles, 349 good articles, 360 featured article reviews, 683 good article reviews and 480 In the news items, so Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors. Well done everyone! All those who reached the final round will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation and review. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or the overall leader in this field.

  •   Lee Vilenski wins the featured article prize, for a total of 6 FAs during the course of the competition and 3 in the final round.
  •   Kavyansh.Singh wins the featured list prize, for 3 FLs in round 2.
  •   Adam Cuerden wins the featured picture prize, for 39 FPs during the competition.
  •   Z1720 wins the featured article reviewer prize, for 35 FARs in round 4.
  •   Epicgenius wins the good article prize, for 32 GAs in round 1.
  •   SounderBruce wins the featured topic prize, for 4 FT articles in round 1.
  •   Lee Vilenski wins the good topic prize, for 34 GT articles in round 5.
  •   Sammi Brie wins the good article reviewer prize, for 71 GARs overall.
  •   Sammi Brie wins the Did you know prize, for 30 DYKs in round 3 and 106 overall.
  •   Bloom6132 wins the In the news prize, for 106 ITNs in round 5 and 289 overall.

Next year's competition will begin on 1 January and possible changes to the rules and scoring are being discussed on the discussion page. You are invited to sign up to take part in the contest; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to have a good turnout for the 2023 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners and finalists, and thank all participants for their involvement! WikiProject Weather: Map Dot & Template/Infobox Colors

edit

Dear project member, This message is being sent out to encourage new ideas and feedback on those proposed in regard to the colors debate for WikiProject Weather. For those who are unaware of what's been happening over the last year, I will give a brief summary. We have been discussing proposed changes to the colors of the dots on tropical cyclone maps and templates and infoboxes across the entire weather project in order to solve issues related to the limited contrast between colors for both normal vision as well as the various types of color blindness (MOS:ACCESS). We had partially implemented a proposal earlier this year, however, it was objected to by a number of people and additional issues were presented that made it evident this wasn't the optimal solution. We tried to come up with other solutions to address the issues related to color contrast, however, none of them gained traction and no consensus was generated.

We need your help and I encourage you to propose your own scale and give feedback on those already listed. Keep in mind that we are NOT making a decision on any individual proposal at this time. We are simply allowing people to make proposals and cultivate them given feedback from other project members. Please visit our project page for additional details. The proposal phase will close no later than December 31st at 23:59 UTC. NoahTalk 03:11, 21 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
