White Hat Rally

Hi, I had a warning on my user talk page about possible copyright violation. Permission had already been granted, at approx the same time as the logo was uploaded with a CC permission, and sent to the "en" email variant. I put a brief note saying permission had been given.

I've now found that the page was deleted. I've had the permission sent again, to the non-"en" permission address this time, hopefully it will be seen this time. So my question is 1) do I need to do anything else to prevent future deletion? 2) would I not have expected a personal message to warn of pending deletion and 3) how do we get the page back. A lot of time was spent by various people to set it up. There was substantial other content that was not copied from the white hat rally website, but the description of what the organisation is all about was best expressed in their words, for which we had their permission (email from mlaw@whitehatrally.org will be in the inbox at wikipedia somewhere). Sent again this evening.

Any help and guidance you can offer would be appreciated.

Cynthia Goyette copyvio?

Hey, Hut. You may or may not remember me, but I was one of the folks who helped clean up a bunch of Darius' copyvio swimming articles when we were blacking out hundreds of them two years ago. I just saw that you removed text from the Cynthia Goyette article regarding the relay world record she and her teammates set at the 1964 Olympics. I'm responsible for adding the text in question: [1]. Can you tell me what the problem is (apart from the lack of a footnote, which I'm happy to add) with this text? Re: Crewe Town Council

Thanks for the note; someone else had originally put the information on the page for Crewe and I just split that information across to the new page. Anywhoo, I shall see to it and get it changed accordingly. Cooltrainer Hugh (talk) 21:07, 23 March 2013 (UTC)

Someone blanked my user talk page

Hi Hut 8.5,

I had some e-mails from the Media Wiki software recently, that User:109.152.14.241 had edited my talk page.

I noticed that after looking through my talk page logs, someone had decided to prank me by blanking my talk page over multiple edits (now reverted by User:Jeff G. as unexplained blanking).

I have a feeling that User:Deven94 may have done that whilst logged out, as he has been adding unwanted content to Hanley Castle High School and was mentioning that a friend of his is a WP admin who could block me 'on request of that user' (for reasons which are not valid) which concerns me. Am I correct in understanding that WP admins can only warn/block etc. based on WP activity and not just because another user requests it as a joke or prank?

Is there anything that could be done to prevent that kind of edit whilst still allowing other users to contact me via my talk page?

Regards,

Usual people in life (talk) 13:36, 24 March 2013 (UTC)

Regarding the vandalism on my talk page

Thanks for your recent assistance in reverting the vandalism and page blanking on my talk page - it is appreciated.

I have reason to believe that it was occurring from college, I've spoken to my tutor who has asked the vandal to refrain from his actions.

Thanks for your help!

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited List of Brazilian flags, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Presidential Standard (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Proposed deletion of A Talking Cat!?!

The article A Talking Cat!?! has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Doesn't seem notable; only one reference claiming to have cult status

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. —Ryulong (琉竜) 22:25, 15 June 2013 (UTC)

Darius Dhlomo

While I appreciate your contributions to the Darius Dhlomo investigation that has lagged on for years (yes I have helped with that investigation), please do not blanket delete information. What you just did to John Brenner (athlete) could have been solved by a simple rewrite. I did that rewrite and then continued to supplement the information. Moving a few words around can save the whole copyvio issue and at the same time continue the valuable information source that wikipedia is. Remember, that's what we do here? You admitted had a source that matched the content word for word, that means you had a source to rewrite from.

Darius Dhlomo was unscrupulous in not writing his own prose. But the content he contributed to wikipedia is important, particularly to the Olympic sports movement. As you take a hatchet to his work, put the information back. Otherwise you leave useless stub articles that might not be noticed by somebody who is willing to do anything about it. You know, the last time I looked at the article it had the basic information . . . Trackinfo (talk) 23:00, 18 June 2013 (UTC)

I think you are being short sighted with your valuable time. The Darius Dhlomo edits are categorized by volume of his contributions. In the early articles with thousands of characters, it was a lot of content. I dealt with pages of results and paragraphs of prose in the first couple thousand articles. You are now in the 5000+ articles, down to a couple of sentences of content; content that is the core of the article and the core of the information about these subjects. Removing that sucks the most important stuff out. Rewriting it takes barely the same amount of time, one microscopic amount compared to manual side by side comparison to identify the violation. I'm suggesting you would do far less damage (yes the true damage was Darius Dhlomo's irresponsibility to fail to do this himself) to wikipedia in the process by taking those few seconds to move words around in the sentence so it is not a copyvio, but still retains the information. At some point you will reach a point of diminishing returns, when the amount of content and the copyvio is so small as to be beyond potential legal claim to the work. You are probably nearing that now. By the way, I'm using my few moments to edit to fix Floyd Heard from the deletions. Trackinfo (talk) 17:11, 19 June 2013 (UTC)

Hi I was looking for this film on wikipedia as it seems to be doing well , but kept getting redirected to the first film Jatt and Juliet. This film has done better than the first film, here are some links for the same -http://www.boxofficeindia.com/boxnewsdetail.php?page=shownews&articleid=5843&nCat=, and -http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2013-07-06/news-interviews/40406315_1_jatt-and-juliet-box-office-garners. Social dining

I tried to nominate this for deletion, but I didn't do it correctly (not quite sure how!). It has unsourced things that are blatantly untrue (the Greeks invented the idea of eating together??) and the concept is far too general to be of any use. The article very transparently only exists as a vehicle to promote someone's website. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.110.58.234 (talk) 19:18, 12 August 2013 (UTC)

David M. Bunis

My son created a "David M. Bunis" page incorporating material which I MYSELF had uploaded to my Amazon profile. I subsequently CHANGED my Amazon profile to avoid copyright issues. Why in heaven's name did you delete the Wiki page? I think my contributions to science do not fall below many other humanities scholars whose pages appear in Wikipedia. Would you kindly return the page to Wikipedia? (If necessary I can delete the Amazon profile entirely, since it is obviously more important for me to have a Wikipedia page than an Amazon profile, which I MYSELF initiated. Thanks in advance for your reply. David M. Bunis david.bunis@gmail.com — Preceding unsigned comment added by David M. Bunis (talkcontribs) 17:13, 15 August 2013 (UTC)

Hello Hut 8.5, Thanks for answering so quickly. I have just deleted my entire biog on Amazon. Also the photo. You can check this at: http://www.amazon.com/-/e/B001JWVB7Y Therefore there is no longer any copyright issue, since there is no material on me on their site any more (and thus no way for me to "prove" I hold the copyright to material which no longer exists). Can you restore the Wiki page? As to material uploaded by an author - or more correctly (and technically) by his son - if you glance at the deleted page (assuming it still exists) you will see there is no self-praise, exaggeration, or anything of that sort. Just the facts. — Preceding unsigned comment added by David M. Bunis (talkcontribs) 19:00, 15 August 2013 (UTC)

This is becoming frustrating. How can I state "on the article's talk page that" I am "the copyright holder of the work" if the page no longer exists?!

And since the page no longer exists I cannot link the following to it either (although I would if I could): <a rel="license" href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/"><img alt="Creative Commons License" style="border-width:0" src="http://i.creativecommons.org/l/by-sa/3.0/88x31.png" /></a>
This work is licensed under a <a rel="license" href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/">Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License</a>.

Nor can I add this to the site, for the same reason:

To use this License in a document you have written, include a copy of the License in the document and put the following copyright and license notices just after the title page: Copyright (2013) DAVID M. BUNIS. Permission is granted to copy, distribute and/or modify this document under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.3 or any later version published by the Free Software Foundation; with no Invariant Sections, no Front-Cover Texts, and no Back-Cover Texts. A copy of the license is included in the section entitled "GNU Free Documentation License". If you have Invariant Sections, Front-Cover Texts and Back-Cover Texts, replace the "with...Texts." line with this: with the Invariant Sections being LIST THEIR TITLES, with the Front-Cover Texts being LIST, and with the Back-Cover Texts being LIST. If you have Invariant Sections without Cover Texts, or some other combination of the three, merge those two alternatives to suit the situation. If your document contains nontrivial examples of program code, we recommend releasing these examples in parallel under your choice of free software license, such as the GNU General Public License, to permit their use in free software.

Unfortunately I have no legal training and cannot see how to solve this problem using the links you suggested (since the page no longer exists). Any direct help you could give would be greatly appreciated.

And finally - I really appreciate your taking the time and making the effort to try to help me correct this problem. David — Preceding unsigned comment added by David M. Bunis (talkcontribs) 19:31, 15 August 2013 (UTC)

Re Bunis: If I understand the instructions correctly, I have now added the text required to my Google Sites page:

https://sites.google.com/site/davidbunis/brief-biography

If I am mistaken please let me know and I'll get my son to try to help me with this. I expect to return some version of what was on the Amazon site to that site (I hope it doesn't have to be the exact former text, since I no longer have it.)

Thanks for your patience. David M. Bunis (talk) 21:39, 15 August 2013 (UTC)

Re Bunis: Hut, I uploaded the text you found to the original Amazon site. I tried to add the same HTML from Creative that I had added (thru your link) to my Google Site but got the message:

"Use plain text only - your biography won't display rich formatting (bolds, italics) or HTML"

so I instead added: (c) 2013 David M. Bunis. (visible at: https://authorcentral.amazon.com/gp/profile) [for David M. Bunis]

I hope this is sufficient.

Now, I still do not see the Wikipedia page "David M. Bunis," and the "User:David M. Bunis" has no content. Can't these two pages be restored now?

Many thanks for your personal help. Have a good weekend. David David M. Bunis (talk) 13:29, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

Thanks very much for the suggestion. I was able to add the text you proposed. So presumably now both of these short paragraphs (with the bibliography) can be restored. I guess I can expect to see the Wiki and User pages restored before long. If there are any other problems please let me know. David David M. Bunis (talk) 14:54, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

Re Bunis: I was referring to this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:David_M._Bunis Probably someone else had that headache. I thought to contribute a few articles to Wikipedia using it, so it would be useful if its content could be restored - or at least made usable. (Since the biog now appears in Wikipedia maybe it's not necessary for it to appear here too.) David David M. Bunis (talk) 15:13, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

Nivio and Sachin Dev Duggal

First, thank you for all the work getting rid of the articles that need to be cleaned up. However, regarding Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Sachin Dev Duggal, it was quite a surprise that both of the articles went away, before much of a consensus was reached. Only one editor explicitly stated that both articles should be deleted. Not sure why one editor defines a consensus? It was not totally clear from the AfD that it applied to both articles. One other editor voted to keep, and one delete, but those two were not clear if they meant one or both articles. I proposed my compromise of keeping one neutral article on the company (which seemed to have survived the demise of its flamboyant founder). That seemed the consensus, so I did quite a bit of work on the Nivio article rewording into neutral tone and adding a few dozen citations. It ended up bearing little resemblance to the one created by the editor with presumed conflict of interest. I would not have spent that much time trying to rescue it if there was a clear consensus emerging. Any chance we could revive the Nivio article and perhaps do another discussion that explicitly concerns that one, as it stood with all the citations and neutral tone? Alas, I did not have time to put into my user area before the trigger was pulled, although the discussion had been opened for about four weeks. The log seems to show the company had already been restored once back in 2009. Thanks for any suggestions. W Nowicki (talk) 19:05, 18 August 2013 (UTC)

Hi there, the reason for deleting the page

I am trying to crate page that is related to an agile management tool, similar to those pages: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planbox and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JIRA but when I try to create it shows message:

A page with this title has previously been deleted. If you are creating a new page with different content, please continue. If you are recreating a page similar to the previously deleted page, or are unsure, please first contact the deleting administrator using the information provided below. 23:06, 1 March 2013 Hut 8.5 (talk | contribs) deleted page TeamPulse (Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Telerik Test Studio)

Could you please assist and tell me the reason why the page was deleted, and what to improve in order not to be deleted in the future. thanks for any help provided, kottich

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Marko Kordić, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Serbian and Montenegrian (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Deletion

Why was our page deleted while we were editing it? Our other page was deleted within the past few months and I am not sure why that was either. We are looking at the other casino pages to see how they are set-up and they have not been deleted. Gecasino (talk) 20:18, 17 June 2014 (UTC)

Martial Arts Film Vandal

Hello. Recently you blocked at least two IPs belonging to the Martial Arts Film Vandal for only two weeks. I feel this is extremely insufficient given his profuse vandalism going back to 2011. The purpose of a block is to keep the blocked user/IP from harming Wikipedia, and therefore, given the vandal's persistence despite hundreds of warnings, all of his known IPs should be preemptively indefinitely blocked. Here is a list of all of his known IPs and an ANI report about him:

Thanks for your time. ミーラー強斗武 (StG88ぬ会話) 19:05, 2 August 2014 (UTC)

IP addresses often don't stay assigned to the same person for very long. By the time a 2 week block expires the IP address in question will likely have been assigned to someone else, and the vandal the block is supposed to target will have moved on to a new one. Anyone else who gets that IP address and tries to edit Wikipedia won't get a message telling them they've been blocked for vandalism. This is why we don't generally block IP addresses for very long. Usually the only situations where IP addresses are blocked for months on end are where they belong to open proxies or institutions which are the sources of lots of vandalism (such as schools), and IPs are almost never blocked indefinitely. See Wikipedia:BLOCK#IP_address_blocks and Wikipedia:Blocking IP addresses. If anything I'm being rather generous by blocking for two weeks.
It might be possible to block a range of IP addresses to more effectively prevent this vandal from editing, but it would require a bit more technical skill than I have and possibly checkuser rights to check for collateral damage, so I would suggest you ask at WP:AN. Such a block won't be indefinite though. Hut 8.5 20:55, 2 August 2014 (UTC)
@Hut 8.5: Thank you for the quick reply. I understand that IPs change (especially obvious in this case), but this guy has used these IPs multiple times. The way I see it, there are three viable options: indef block all of his past, present, and future IPs on sight; indef protect every article he's ever vandalized; contact his IP provider. He has no desire to stop vandalizing, and has almost made a career out of it. I honestly think some collateral is the lesser of two evils in this case. ミーラー強斗武 (StG88ぬ会話) 21:13, 2 August 2014 (UTC)
Per WP:IPBLENGTH this user's IPs warrants long-term blocks (years) if not indefinite. ミーラー強斗武 (StG88ぬ会話) 21:21, 2 August 2014 (UTC)
I suggest you try for a rangeblock. You may well be able to get a batch of IPs this vandal could use blocked for months, which would be pretty effective at preventing vandalism and a lot more efficient than blocking individual IPs one by one. If this vandal repeatedly targets the same articles then those could be semiprotected for months. If the vandalism returns after these expire then they could be extended. I would also recommend you file something at WP:LTA if you're familiar with the history - if nothing else it would be helpful to anyone else who has to deal with the vandalism. It isn't going to be possible to block an IP for years because a sockmaster used it once or twice or to semiprotect an article because it was vandalised once or twice. Hut 8.5 23:44, 2 August 2014 (UTC)
Thank you very much for the advice. Speaking of the LTA, someone else was supposed to write one but hasn't yet (or at least presented a draft), but I might do it. Thanks again. ミーラー強斗武 (StG88ぬ会話) 00:23, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

Template:Lang-mn

Can you lower protection level to semi-protection? It's transcluded by 1,000 pages, and it needs Mongolian script. I can insert it without desiring to be "Template editor". --George Ho (talk) 18:48, 12 August 2014 (UTC)

I change my mind; I don't know how to insert or change the template. Raise to "template editor" protection? --George Ho (talk) 04:57, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

Template:Lang-sco

Lower to semi-protection? It is transcluded by 555 pages. --George Ho (talk) 00:37, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

Template:Lang-cy

Lower to "template editor" for TEs? It is transcluded in 2,000 pages. George Ho (talk) 04:58, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

Please help us

Hi Hut,

First of all thanks a lot for providing info over the time. This time, we made some progress and got supportive info for our case. I updated it in my talk page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Deepakmdeo#My_response) as a continuation for our previous discussion. Please look into this and do help us. Thanks for your time.

Submarine Parachute Assistance Group

Hi

You previously deleted Submarine Parachute Assistance Group, on the basis of a CopyVio, from the ARRSE wiki. I was about to start the page on the basis of some recent discussion and it'd be useful to see what was previously there. Is that possible somehow?

Thanks

GhostlyLegend (talk) 09:10, 16 October 2014 (UTC)

Thanks. Will give it a go.

Deletion of 'Cockpit Manager'

Hey there!

I noticed you deleted the Cockpit Manager '14 page, for it was a repost. Well, I didn't know it existed and had been deleted prior to my submit. I'm pretty sure it obeyed all the wikipedia criteria regarding notability, references, and etc. Could you reconsider it?

Thanks in advance!

Sandra Williams

Howdy. Please explain your reversion of Greeknonfatyogurt's edits to Sandra Williams. The edits appear accurate and properly sourced. Thanks. Dwpaul Talk 22:41, 13 November 2014 (UTC)

Likewise that user's edits to Kevin Bacon (politician), which also appear to be legit. Both are Ohio politicians in districts near me and on my watch list. Dwpaul Talk 22:43, 13 November 2014 (UTC)
Nevermind, I see that they are a sock. A shame, since they were (in at least some cases) doing some useful work. Dwpaul Talk 22:45, 13 November 2014 (UTC)
