Needs some advice on process

Hi. I need some advice about commenting on Wiki articles. Let me know when you have a minute?

22rabbit (talk) 21:42, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

Discussion with those who work on many articles

I've encountered a couple editors who have worked on a large number of articles. One, for example, strips a reference work, adds no additional information, does not tag the article. Another finds a series of closely related topics, does a Web search, and paraphrases in a couple sentences an article they find -- almost always without having an understanding of the subject matter.

In one situation apparently the editor has used sock puppets, reverts edits to their own articles with little justification, point blank refuses a request from another editor for mediation, etc. If an editor refuses to be "reasonable", what is the next recourse?

399 to go

We are almost done, Category:Articles lacking sources from June 2006 is down to less the 400 articles to find references for. I would like to thank you for listing yourself as a volunteer at Wikipedia:Unreferenced articles and would like to take this opportunity to invite you to visit the project again and work on getting the last few articles referenced. We started with 5,572 and we are in the home stretch, please come and try to do a couple a day and we can finish it up in no time. Jeepday (talk) 02:20, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

List of tallest buildings in the United States

Nice work! Is that the next list you want to prepare for FLC? It would be nice to have a country tallest building list at FL, as currently there are only city lists. I have one question about List of tallest buildings in the United States, though. As you know, with lists such as List of tallest buildings in Las Vegas and List of tallest buildings in Dallas, freestanding structures are included. So, should we include the Stratosphere Tower for the main US list? Cheers, Raime 20:59, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

Now I'm sorry for my late reply... I have also been fairly busy. Alaskan assassin has developed a pretty good method, IMHO, for including free-standing towers in lists - include them where they would be located based on official height (as they currently are in all but the US list), but do not rank them. What do you think? The only US lists that would be affected would be Seattle, Las Vegas, Dallas, and the main US one, as well as Canada's Toronto list.
I agree about improving Skyscraper to FA, but it isn't really related to an FTD focusing on US tallest buildings lists. But it would be a great initiative to undertake anyway. I agree that "free-standing skyscrapers" is fairly poor wording; towers that share one base seem to always be ranked as separate buildings, even in cities as small as List of tallest buildings in Tulsa (CityPlex Towers and Boulder Towers). NYC and (especially) Hong Kong should not be exceptions.
A taskforce (or perhaps just a drive, taskforces seem to be more like "mini-WikiProjects" - see WP:TULSA) would be a good idea. But, I am still fairly confused as to how you actually obtain the coordinates... And a side note, the FTD is now officially half-way done, with 12 out of 24 lists featured. Hopefully Houston and Jersey City will become featured soon, with LA, Seattle, and the US one not far behind. This lengthy FTD may finally be beginning to "wrap up"! :) Cheers, Raime 03:16, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
I as just searching for photos on Flickr, and I found this freely-licensed image of a Hydro-Québec line. Do you think it would be in any way useful for the article? These are also all free images that could be used to depict the 1998 ice storm, but I don't think any are really relevant to Hydro-Québec power lines perhaps this one?). NBA Stuff

I'll contact the main co-editor of the newsletter, and add that info in there, and see what I can do myself with all those articles. NBA.com has a complete history of the games, and it's pretty easy to get all the info. Among other things with WP:NBA that need to be done is List of transactions involving the Dallas Mavericks. It is an incomplete list. Happy editing. Basketball110 03:56, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

Both are fine. For the transactions list, I use ESPN. For the game scores, I use NBA. Basketball110 21:32, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

New Project

Myself and several other editors have been compiling a list of very active editors who would likely be available to help new editors in the event they have questions or concerns. As the list grew and the table became more detailed, it was determined that the best way to complete the table was to ask each potential candidate to fill in their own information, if they so desire. This list is sorted geographically in order to provide a better estimate as to whether the listed editor is likely to be active.

If you consider yourself a very active Wikipedian who is willing to help newcomers, please either complete your information in the table or add your entry. If you do not want to be on the list, either remove your name or just disregard this message and your entry will be removed within 48 hours. The table can be found at User:Useight/Highly Active, as it has yet to have been moved into the Wikipedia namespace. Thank you for your help. Useight (talk) 17:30, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

Robert Barr now redirect, not dab

I saw you added a {{DisambigProject}} tag to Talk:Robert Barr. [1] Robert Barr used to be a dab, but now redirects to Bob Barr,[2] with Robert Barr (disambiguation) handling the dab. I'm now wondering what the appropriate tags on Talk:Robert Barr are. Because it's a redirect, and not a dab, should the {{WPBiography}} tag be changed? And similarly, what are your thoughts about the DisambigProject tag you put up? -Noca2plus (talk) 16:17, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks HI. Hey -- Redirect isn't a listed class for {{WPBiography}}. How'd you figure that out? I'm a Tiësto fan too. -Noca2plus (talk) 04:12, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, I don't know about the code for WPBiography either. I was going off the documentation for that template, which only listed FA, A, GA, B, Start, Stub, Dab, Template, Cat, and NA. Did you see that someone else thought NA was preferable to redirect? diff. Honestly, I'm just trying to figure out how this all is "supposed" to work. -Noca2plus (talk) 03:01, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

Equitable Building

Hydrogen Iodide, I was wondering if you have any ideas about the title of a to-be-created article. Equitable Building was built in 1892 and is considered the first skyscraper in Atlanta. It was demolished in 1971. There is already an article for the 453-foot Equitable Building in Atlanta that was built in 1968: Equitable Building (Atlanta). For the 1892 building, I proposed the name Equitable Building (Atlanta 1892) and Alaskan assassin came up with Equitable Building (demolished). Do you have any ideas? Re:Progress of FTD

Glad to have you back "full time"! I definitely agree; we should tackle the Big Three next. As you mentioned, the Chicago list is very close; there are just some ranking issues that need to be resoved and some last minute issues and touch-ups; I will nominate it tonight. I think we should do Hong Kong last partly because it is not in the FTD (and we are so close, let's just get it over and done with) but mostly because the main issue there is article creation. Alaskan assassin is the best editior for that job, but he/she is away until June 28. So we can wait until then, giving us plenty of time to wrap up the FTD. But as for the Big Three's leads, I think we should basically use Chicago's as a model. It is long, yes, but still a fairly reasonable length, and seems to cover everything important. I was wondering if you saw this discussion at WT:SKY; I am really having doubts about using "skyline ranking" as a basis for FT conclusion. Your input there would be greatly appreciated.

As for The Waterview, I think we should leave it as under construction until either the developer makes an announcement or Emporis updates. And I don't think Honolulu should be in the drive, as although it has a very high number of high-rises, it just doesn't meet the criteria for inclusion. Of course, this doesn't mean that we shouldn't strive for FL-status for a future List of tallest buildings in Honolulu anyway. Cheers, Raime 13:09, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

Great work on the Tampa and Columbus lists! I think Columbus is just about ready for nomination (just that one redlink needs an article), but do you think that 4 tallest buildings lists at FLC at one time is too much? Also, do you think that the proposed Buggyworks building needs an article?
One more thing - please see the discussion at WT:SKY regarding a change in the the WP:SKY FT criteria when you have time. The proposal would definitely impact the progress of the FTD, as I think that 4 more lists would need to get featured status. Cheers, Raime 17:37, 17 June 2008 (UTC)
Hey, I just wanted to let you to know that I nominated List of tallest buildings in Tampa at Template talk:Did you know and listed you as a co-nominator. Hope that is okay! Cheers, Raime 04:45, 18 June 2008 (UTC)
Okay, I have added the four proposed buildings with no heights to the Tampa list's future buildings section. I'm glad you caught that; I usually use SkyscraperPage for finding info about future buildings, as Emporis only lists all of the buildings without heights at the very end of its often very long "data collections", but in this case SkyscraperPage had very little info. As for The Place at Channelside I, I am not really sure what to do. The whole basis of the list is height, so if a building does not have a listed height provided by a reliable source, should it still be listed? With the Jersey City list, some buildings did not have listed heights; so I used building renderings on SkyscraperPage to estimate heights, labeling them as "estimates" in the Notes section. This seemed to be fine at FLC, so when this is an option for other lists in the future, we should definitely use this estimation method. However, when no renderings are even provided, I have no idea. I guess that buildings above a certain floor count that would obviously be above the height cutoff should be included some way, but I don't think that a collection of "N/A"s in the height column will pass at FLC... What is your opinion on this? For now, at least, perhaps we should leave The Place at Channelside I off the Tampa list. Cheers, Raime 05:29, 18 June 2008 (UTC)
I don't think that a "Tallest buildings by floor count" section is the way to go on this issue. This is certain to bring criticism at FLC, as such a section would ultimately be a relisting of buildings that do have heights, which would be inappropriate as there is already a sortable column in the main Tallest buildings list. Or, if we were to remove the floor count column in the main list, the list would fail criterion 4, appropriate structure. A more appropriate option, in my opinion, would be to list the buildings at the very bottom of the main tallest buildings list, with a note stating that they do not have heights released by developers (with em dashes in the height column) but have a high enough floor count to be included. Such a note would be similar to the notes currently in place in the future buildings sections at the Atlanta, Chicago, and New York City lists: "A floor count of 40 stories is used as the cutoff in place of a height of 400 feet (122 m) for buildings whose heights have not yet been released by their developers." These buildings should be listed at the end of the list, since it is a listing by height, but they need not be in a separate section. What do you think? And I see your point about the SkyscraperPage diagram, but more often than not they are correct, and it isn't OR as it is published by a reliable source. While we shouldn’t use it for every situation, it is better than nothing as long as the height is clearly labeled as an estimation. Cheers, Raime 16:21, 19 June 2008 (UTC)
I am not sure what you mean: are you proposing coordinates for every building on the list, perhaps in a "coordinates column", or just one set of coordinates for the city? Cheers, Raime 01:48, 22 June 2008 (UTC)
Let me begin with: terrific work! The list, particularly the lead, is great, all thanks to your intense work today. The only thing I thing will be a problem at this list's FLC is the amount of redlinks. The buildings aren't notable, but unfortunately we have no strict skyscraper notability guideline and a user could easily oppose on the basis of "why is Vision City less notable than Cable TV Tower?" Still, the FL guidelines state that a list has a "minimum number of redlinks", and the list meets that criterion. Also, do you think the "m (ft)" method should be used? I think I prefer the "m / ft" method myself, but User:Tony1 pointed this out as an MoS breach for the Atlanta list. What do you think? Cheers, Raime 03:12, 29 June 2008 (UTC)
I think we should go with what Emporis states, with a note stating that there are more buildings whose heights have never been released by developers, so the number is not completely accurate and an exactly correct number would be nearly impossible to obtain. The 228 number comes from a reliable source, and while adding to that number may be slightly more accurate, in the end the adjusted number would still not encompass all of the buildings (and would not be directly sourced to a website). Perhaps stating "at least 228" would be a good option? Cheers, Raime 03:51, 29 June 2008 (UTC)

Chicago list and the future of SKY FTD

Let me start with whether the Chicago list is ready for featured list nomination: I have no idea. I still am not familiar with what the tallest buildings lists need to include to become featured or even what the necessary criteria are for a list to become featured. I would recommend that you stick to only asking Raime about this, as that is where the knowledge for this rests. Now about the next topic for the FTD: I proposed to Raime back in early May that we should bring the lists of cities that have at least one building in the top 50 to featured status. See the third paragraph at User talk:Raime#Miscellaneous comments. This way we would get all cities all over the world that have large skylines with just one topic drive. Then after, we might be able to work on the cities that have shorter buildings, but still have a lot of high-rises. How does that sound? Do you have a different proposal? Leitmanp (talk | contributions) 23:25, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

I have no clue what to do in that situation. If we can find the heights from other sources (the architect, developer, contractor, tenant(s), local news stories, etc.), it would help. If we can not even get it from those sources, we may have to estimate ourselves or leave it blank and say that no official sources have ever been released. But I am not sure if this would be allowed when reviewed during featured list nomination. A few buildings without heights on Emporis, are actually listed with heights on SkyscraperPage. On this list, you will see that Taipei Sky Dome - Tower 1 (which does not have a height on Emporis) is listed with a height of 142 m. The problem is that there are others that have no heights on either Emporis or SkyscraperPage. Leitmanp (talk | contributions) 03:10, 16 June 2008 (UTC)
I still do not know how we can handle such facts. I agree that using the SkyscraperPage diagrams is not a good idea since they could have been drawn incorrectly. But, I do not think leaving those buildings out would be a good idea either. Not even attempting to bring them to featured status should not be an option. I saw a comment you wrote on Raime's talk page. I think creating a section in these lists titled "tallest buildings by floor height" would be perfect way to handle this situation. How would placing it as a sub-section of the "tallest buildings" section sound? It might be the best solution we have so that we can include all the buildings, but so we avoid estimations and/or original research.
I want to also congratulate you on your hard work. I saw that you have made a considerable number of edits to the Tampa and Columbus lists. Great job!! Leitmanp (talk | contributions) 03:23, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

Stub ratings

What criteria are you using when you rate so many articles as stubs? There are no comments to justify your ratings. In particular, I disagree with the stub rating for Western Brook Pond. While short, it contains an infobox, coordinates, photograph and references. The article contains information about the geology, history and unique aspects of the lake. It has been featured in WP:DYK on the Wikipedia Mainpage. Silverchemist (talk) 03:35, 16 June 2008 (UTC)

Hyatt Regency Hong Kong and Hotel Panorama

Hydrogen Iodide, I saw that there was no world ranking for Hyatt Regency Hong Kong in the List of tallest buildings in Hong Kong. I went to the List of tallest buildings in the world to find the rank so that I could put it in the Hong Kong list. I could not find "Hyatt Regency Hong Kong," so I looked for a building in Hong Kong that stands at 261 m. I found that Hotel Panorama was listed in its place. By looking at the history of Hotel Panorama, I saw that Hotel Panorama was moved to Hyatt Regency Hong Kong but another editor recreated the article. Are these the same buildings? If so, shouldn't Hotel Panorama be redirected to Hyatt Regency Hong Kong? Leitmanp (talk | contributions) 02:21, 29 June 2008 (UTC)

So, should I redirect Hotel Panorama to Hyatt Regency Hong Kong and change the link in the List of tallest buildings in the world? Or is there a specific reason for the seperate articles? Leitmanp (talk | contributions) 02:32, 29 June 2008 (UTC)
Okay, thank you. I fixed the link to Hyatt Regency Hong Kong at List of tallest buildings in the world. Leitmanp (talk | contributions) 03:10, 29 June 2008 (UTC)
While I support the inclusion of the buildings that you found the heights for (yet Emporis does not have) in the total number of buildings, it know that it will be a lot of work. And it might be considered original research. It is easier to just use what Emporis (or any other reliable source) says and note (as Raime said) that the number is larger since many buildings do not have heights. Leitmanp (talk | contributions) 23:08, 29 June 2008 (UTC)

Tall Tower / Al Burj

Hydrogen Iodide, I saw that article. But Nakheel has not officially mentioned anything about Al Burj for several months. We are not certain of the location, height, or even name. I think we should stick with official sources. Also, the name "Tall Tower" has been used before by Nakheel to describe Al Burj in its redesign and/or study phases. If Nakheel does indeed announce a new building, I am sure the name will not be "Tall Tower" as it is too generic. I think Nakheel would want to use a name that is unique. We should just wait until it is launched, because that is the only time when we will be able to get official and accurate information. Leitmanp (talk | contributions) 22:00, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

I have already added a note about it. See this and this. Do you think that note is good enough or should it be reworded? Leitmanp (talk | contributions) 19:13, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

But yeah, expand the lead and you'll be fine. --  ThinkBlue  (Hit BLUE) 19:09, 11 July 2008 (UTC)
Excellent work, I read through the entire article and the lead has everything in there. ;) Good job. --  ThinkBlue  (Hit BLUE) 22:25, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

Re:Questions

I think we should hold off on Las Vegas for a little while, at least until after Tampa passess - 4 lists at FLC (assuming we nominate Hong Kong very soon) at one time is a little too much. I will gladly create all of the Hong Kong complex articles, probably later tonight. Let's aim at nominating the list by tomorrow; it is about time we have all of the "big three" skylines as FLs. I think that the Guangzhou Sightseeing and TV Tower is a tower, not a skyscraper; according to the Guangzhou SkyscraperPage diagram, it is not a high-rise. So, I would say it should be included but not ranked in the Guangzhou list. Cheers, Raime 16:24, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

List of tallest buildings in Hong Kong

Okay, I finished creating all of the articles for the HK list, and just nominated it at FLC. However, I am leaving for Russia in just about two hours, and will be gone for two weeks - since I will not be able to address concerns listed at the review page, could you "look after" it? I like the idea of getting the skyscraper article to GA-status; that would be a good next step after the FTD is finished and the HK list has passed. Cheers, Raime 16:53, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

GA Review of One Rincon Hill

Hi Hydrogen Iodine, I'm SRX, and I am currently reviewing One Rincon Hill for Good article status. Due to the size in length of the article, I am going to break the review up in parts to get a good thourough review. I have done the first part of the review. (link). Notify me when completed ;)--SRX 03:55, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

Wyndham Baltimore South Tower

You removed the prod of the above article with the comment: "this was one of the tallest buildings in Baltimore when it was completed" but didn't add it to the article. How is someone supposed to know that unless it is in the article? KnightLago (talk) 19:41, 28 July 2008 (UTC)
