Administrators' newsletter – December 2018

Interface administrator changes
- Following a request for comment, the Mediation Committee is now closed and will no longer be accepting case requests.
- A request for comment is in progress to determine whether members of the Bot Approvals Group should satisfy activity requirements in order to remain in that role.
- A request for comment is in progress regarding whether to change the administrator inactivity policy, such that administrators "who have made no logged administrative actions for at least 12 months may be desysopped". Currently, the policy states that administrators "who have made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least 12 months may be desysopped".
- A proposal has been made to temporarily restrict editing of the Main Page to interface administrators in order to mitigate the impact of compromised accounts.
- Administrators and bureaucrats can no longer unblock themselves unless they placed the block initially. This change has been implemented globally. See also this ongoing village pump discussion (permalink).
- To complement the aforementioned change, blocked administrators will soon have the ability to block the administrator that placed their block to mitigate the possibility of a compromised administrator account blocking all other active administrators.
- Since deployment of Partial blocks on Test Wikipedia, several bugs were identified. Most of them are now fixed. Administrators are encouraged to test the new deployment and report new bugs on Phabricator or leave feedback on the Project's talk page. You can request administrator access on the Test Wiki here.
- Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee Elections is open to eligible editors until Monday 23:59, 3 December 2018. Please review the candidates and, if you wish to do so, submit your choices on the voting page.
- In late November, an attacker compromised multiple accounts, including at least four administrator accounts, and used them to vandalize Wikipedia. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately. Sharing the same password across multiple websites makes your account vulnerable, especially if your password was used on a website that suffered a data breach. As these incidents have shown, these concerns are not pure fantasies.
- Wikipedia policy requires administrators to have strong passwords. To further reinforce security, administrators should also consider enabling two-factor authentication. A committed identity can be used to verify that you are the true account owner in the event that your account is compromised and/or you are unable to log in.
- Shock Brigade Harvester Boris (Raymond Arritt) passed away on 14 November 2018. Boris joined Wikipedia as Raymond arritt on 8 May 2006 and was an administrator from 30 July 2007 to 2 June 2008.

Take part in a survey
editHi I dream of horses
We're working to measure the value of Wikipedia in economic terms. We want to ask you some questions about how you value being able to edit Wikipedia.
Our survey should take about 10-15 minutes of your time. We hope that you will enjoy it and find the questions interesting. All answers will be kept strictly confidential and will be anonymized before the aggregate results are published. Regretfully, we can only accept responses from people who live in the US due to restrictions in our grant-based funding.
As a reward for your participation, we will randomly pick 1 out of every 5 participants and give them $25 worth of goods of their choice from the Wikipedia store (e.g. Wikipedia themed t-shirts). Note that we can only reward you if you are based in the US.
Click here to access the survey: https://mit.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_eXJcEhLKioNHuJv
Thanks

editI did not make any edits or touch your page in any way. I have never been to this page, or even knew it even existed.
In short, you've got the wrong guy. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.191.39.22 (talk) 13:23, 13 December 2018 (UTC)
- You have a dynamic IP, which basically means your IP address will periodically reassign itself to another internet connection. That's probably why you got my message; it wasn't addressed to you, really, but to someone else. I put a message on the top of your talk page explaining that. I suggest getting an account if you want to edit Wikipedia. -- I dream of horses (My talk page) (My edits) @ 00:26, 14 December 2018 (UTC)
NPR Newsletter No.16 15 December 2018
editHello I dream of horses/2018,
- Reviewer of the Year
This year's award for the Reviewer of the Year goes to Onel5969. Around on Wikipedia since 2011, their staggering number of 26,554 reviews over the past twelve months makes them, together with an additional total of 275,285 edits, one of Wikipedia's most prolific users.
- Thanks are also extended for their work to JTtheOG (15,059 reviews), Boleyn (12,760 reviews), Cwmhiraeth (9,001 reviews), Semmendinger (8,440 reviews), PRehse (8,092 reviews), Arthistorian1977 (5,306 reviews), Abishe (4,153 reviews), Barkeep49 (4,016 reviews), and Elmidae (3,615 reviews).
Cwmhiraeth, Semmendinger, Barkeep49, and Elmidae have been New Page Reviewers for less than a year — Barkeep49 for only seven months, while Boleyn, with an edit count of 250,000 since she joined Wikipedia in 2008, has been a bastion of New Page Patrol for many years.
See also the list of top 100 reviewers.
- Less good news, and an appeal for some help
The backlog is now approaching 5,000, and still rising. There are around 640 holders of the NPR flag, most of whom appear to be inactive. The 10% of the reviewers who do 90% of the work could do with some support especially as some of them are now taking a well deserved break.
- Really good news - NPR wins the Community Wishlist Survey 2019
At #1 position, the Community Wishlist poll closed on 3 December with a resounding success for NPP, reminding the WMF and the volunteer communities just how critical NPP is to maintaining a clean encyclopedia and the need for improved tools to do it. A big 'thank you' to everyone who supported the NPP proposals. See the results.
- Training video
Due to a number of changes having been made to the feed since this three-minute video was created, we have been asked by the WMF for feedback on the video with a view to getting it brought up to date to reflect the new features of the system. Please leave your comments here, particularly mentioning how helpful you find it for new reviewers.

Silly question about template
editFirst, thanks for all you do! I have learned a lot from watching your edits. Here's one where I'm trying to understand the significance of what you did. In this edit you added the reflist template to an article. I can't see that the article renders any differently, but I'm sure there's some reason for doing it, and I want to do the best job possible. Should I be adding that template, or is my laziness OK? I don't want to cause anyone extra work, or prevent something from showing up somewhere it should due to my laziness, but if it makes no difference skipping it saves me a few seconds....Thanks again! Jacona (talk) 13:13, 14 December 2018 (UTC)
- @Jacona: Not a silly question, actually. In some articles (not all, perhaps not this one), {{reflist}} really helps with making the article look nicer. It makes it so you can choose where the footnotes are. Most articles will develop to the point of needing the template, so best to keep it there. -- I dream of horses (My talk page) (My edits) @ 04:51, 15 December 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks, I'll use it. Jacona (talk) 18:36, 16 December 2018 (UTC)

Fractal string
editJust to let you know that the "correction" in this edit changing 2$ to $2 is an error. This is not a reference to currency, but tags used in LaTex to delimit math expressions. They don't work in Wikipedia (math tags have to be used instead) but the effect of your edit will be to break the text in whatever editor the original contributor was using as well as here, and to confuse anyone trying to fix it in the future. SpinningSpark 13:32, 21 December 2018 (UTC)
- @Spinningspark: It seems that you fixed it, though, with <math> tags. {{not a typo}} and its' redirects are often also an option. -- I dream of horses (My talk page) (My edits) @ 02:15, 22 December 2018 (UTC)
- It was more to stop you doing it again in the future than to get you to fix it. Basically, look at what AWB (or whatever tool you are using) has done to check it makes sense before moving on. Anyway, I've fixed it properly now by deleting the passage altogether as a copyvio. The giveaway was the editor had also inserted the LaTex equivalent of ref tags but without actually providing the references (which are in separate endnotes in the original document). Clearly just blindly copied from the original source rather than someone not understanding how Wikipedia works. SpinningSpark 11:30, 22 December 2018 (UTC)
- @Spinningspark: You're right, I should've been paying attention. In my defense, I do usually add {{not a typo}} myself via AWB. -- I dream of horses (My talk page) (My edits) @ 11:38, 22 December 2018 (UTC)

List of professorships at the University of Oxford
editHi, I have changed the Norman Collisson Professorship which you edited today back from Collision in line with the reference to the Oxford website and added a "!--not a mistake--" tag. Let me know if you disagree. TSventon (talk) 15:21, 21 December 2018 (UTC)
- @TSventon: Well, I agree with the general idea you had. I removed the hidden comment and wrapped {{proper name}} around Collisson. This should be just as invisible as a hidden comment but will cause AWB to skip the article automatically, preventing future mistakes from being in the zone. -- I dream of horses (My talk page) (My edits) @ 02:22, 22 December 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks, I wanted to find a way to get AWB to skip the name automatically.TSventon (talk) 15:45, 22 December 2018 (UTC)

Biolological?
editIs your typo fix in Multiomics really right? PamD 06:55, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
- @PamD: Nope. I just fixed it further.
- That was an honest misreading on my part (I do remember pausing and reading it over to make sure), but what an odd error on AWBs' part. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.-- I dream of horses (My talk page) (My edits) @ 07:00, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
- Given the strange (to me, anyway) terminology in that area of omics etc, it was just conceivable that it was a new real word! Otherwise I'd just have re-fixed it. PamD 07:35, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
