User talk:I dream of horses/2020/August
Hello, you rejected my article about Anthony Brennan, III and about the incident he caused. I cited a dozen mainstream media articles entirely about the incident, him and the fallout. Before he was arrested, both the Maryland Attorney General and the Mayor of DC commented, appealing to the public for information. After he was arrested, media reported that he had attempted to conceal his crime; that he was fired; and that 20 people showed up to his house to protest. Before he was arrested, two men were mistakenly identified as him, doxxed and harassed; I cited 4 articles on this aspect, that also covered the original incident.
What more is required to meet your minimum standards for notability? I cited a dozen independent credible sources entirely focused on the subject; how many more are required? Gorkelobb (talk) 01:56, 8 July 2020 (UTC)
- Gorkelobb, you should probably read over the page about biographies of living people involved in one event; typically, such people aren't really notable. I dream of horses (talk page) (Contribs) Remember to notify me after replying off my talk page. 06:23, 9 July 2020 (UTC)
OK, but after I deleted the article about Brennan III, you then deleted the subsequent article I wrote about the event itself, which why was I contacted you here. As I noted above, I cited a dozen independent mainstream media sources, and a lot more than that covered the incident, and the Attorney General of Maryland and the Mayor of DC called on the public to assist with. Besides the original incident, major media continued to report on events as they developed, including the related doxxing incidents, the arrest of Brennan, and the protest at his house. So what is the criteria for notability about an event? Wiki guidelines say at least one mention in a reliable source is sufficient.Gorkelobb (talk) 18:10, 31 July 2020 (UTC)
- Gorkelobb, right, but there are additional guidelines in regards to living people to prevent defamation. I dream of horses (talk page) (Contribs) Remember to notify me after replying off my talk page. 07:14, 1 August 2020 (UTC)
- I dream of horses Again, my question is about the significance of an event, not the primary person involved; my second article was about the event, not the person. The Mayor of DC and the AG of MD considered this event significant enough to publicly comment on the incident and appeal to the public for help. The assault on 3 people shocked the consciences of people all over the DMV region, and generated two weeks of news coverage in dozens of major media sources, including national media, culminating with Brennan's arrest and charges. How is this not significant? What are the minimum criteria for an event to be considered significant? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gorkelobb (talk • contribs) 14:52, 1 August 2020 (UTC)
- @Gorkelobb: Ah, I see, you created another article under a different title, and GPL93 figured it out and moved it to draftspace. Whatever notability coming from this event probably won't endure; hence not only the WP:BLP1E policy but also the WP:NOTNEWS policy. A draft can be left unedited for six months without being deleted for staleness; even a relatively minor edit will restart the clock, and it doesn't have to be deleted if someone established sees potential in the draft. This can wait. Until then, take "no" for an answer. I dream of horses (talk page) (Contribs) Remember to notify me after replying off my talk page. 00:45, 2 August 2020 (UTC)

- @Hotdurger: By "search engine optimization" I meant the legal, white hat search optimization, defined on Wikipedia and contrasted with "black hat search engine optimization":
SEO techniques can be classified into two broad categories: techniques that search engine companies recommend as part of good design ("white hat"), and those techniques of which search engines do not approve ("black hat").

Rue du Mail reverted
editHi, you just reverted my edit on Rue du Mail. I do believe this is a mistake. Below is the text I added, which I think provides useful information on the fashion house all-the-while keeping a neutral tone:
The purpose for creating the Rue du Mail fashion house was to explore futuristic clothing ideas. Jimmy Chan had met Martine Sitbon through the designer Titi Kwan. The first three seasons were positive for the fashion house, but failed to grow larger in its fourth year, thus resolving to remain a modest business size-wise.[1] The creative force is led by Martine Sitbon, a veteran in the fashion industry. She creates svelte, moody designs for Rue du Mail, exploring with unconventional fabrics, and seeking autre genre effects.[1]

So I made a few typos I was about to fix, but the gist of it seems ok, doesn't it ? --Donnehush (talk) 02:40, 12 August 2020 (UTC)
- Donnehush, it's best to avoid words like words, and phrases like "futuristic clothing ideas," "modest," "creative force," "veteran in the fashion industry," "svelte, moody designs," and "unconventional" on Wikipedia. A common exception would be if you can add "according to Specific Person '[insert opinion here]'" somewhere before or after such a statement. - Donald Forrest Williams, 331dot left a pretty good explanation on why I did that on your talk page. It's not that likely you're notable beyond the band you were in (not that you aren't important, just that you don't qualify for an article). editThank you so much for your welcome message. I am looking to share more of my learning and edits to the community. Happy to be a part of Wiki community.
My edits got rejected, saying its spam. I just added a useful link to check domains in the blocklist. While I respect the communities decision, but not really clear why so. Because I added as an external link where some other useful links were also there.
Geniusdibya (talk) 13:43, 13 August 2020 (UTC)
- Geniusdibya, if there was a CAPTCHA you didn't/couldn't fill out, that would've been the problem. On top of that, some links are frequently spammed in a bot-like fashion; social media links are prone to this. You might have better luck after your account is four days old and you have ten edits in article space. Till now, I have been using a lot of AWB functions proficiently. There are some functions that I am aware of, but I haven't used. I don't know where/how to download the dumps, and how to edit them through AWB. Wikipedia:WikiProject Check Wikipedia is not clear about it either. editThanks for your edits to Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism. Here Special:Diff/973598735 you removed report for User:MK0750. - QueerEcofeminist, after looking through the last few edits (granted, with help from page preview), there was only one specific case of spam, which probably doesn't fit the criteria of the rather quick vandalism that AIV can sometimes require. I see why you would want to use AIV, though. I'm starting to see there's no clear-cut board for this. Maybe the conflict of interest board is another option, since an overly positive POV can sometimes be a sign of a COI. I dream of horses (Contribs) Please notify me after replying off my talk page. editI'd like to write an article about my good friend and local Republican politician Jeff Keast. Unfortunately, I have obvious bias towards him (I plan to work on his mayoral campaign, and he acts as a mentor for my political career). - AlexKTsirikos, it looks like you're writing a draft. That's a good thing, since you'd have someone else with less of a bias look it over.

editHello! You are my editor for the page I am submitting for Mary Naylor. This is my first page submission, and I know I have a lot to learn, so any help is most welcome. I understand that you would like clarification on the copywrights for the pictures I attached to my submission. All of the photos belong to Mary Naylor Kodell, who is my godmother, and who is 92 and doesn't get how to work a computer. The color photo that was a publicity shot for the musical "Scoop," was expressly given to Mary from the producer who said, "Use it for whatever you want. That's what these photos are for!" The photo that was used as the RAF Pinup, was actually not taken by the RAF, but by a private photography studio using her RAF costume that she was then currently wearing in the musical, "Best Bib and Tucker." The other photographs are from her private collection, and she owns the copyright on them all and has given me permission to use them in her Wikipedia article. I will be sending you a copy of that letter in the next day. She, unfortunately, is not computer savvy enough to fill out the official release page, so I am hoping we can work our way around this situation. Mary is a forgotten treasure of the British stage from 1939-1960, and we hope her amazing story of entertaining a nation at war when she was just a child is worthy of your efforts. Many thanks, Myra Williams McWethy myramcwethy@gmail.com Myramcwethy (talk) 22:13, 24 August 2020 (UTC)
- @Myramcwethy: Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia doesn't need permission from the subject of the photograph (in this case, the subject is your godmother), but rather, the person who took the photograph or their legal representative. Basically, a partial copyright waiver is needed to make it legal to adapt or sell the photograph. There's a rather tiny "fair use" loophole for people who can't be photographed readily; in nearly all cases, this is used in the event in the case of someone who is deceased.
- If I were you, I'd read over the conflict of interest guidelines (or, at bare minimum, this summary]), and worry about the photographs after the draft is published as an article. I dream of horses (Contribs) Please notify me after replying off my talk page. Thank you. 01:17, 25 August 2020 (UTC)

Yes, Mary has an old family connection to me, but I am a doctoral candidate at Harvard University, have worked as an editor for the American Institute of Research, and have been a professional writer for forty years. As you can see in my entry, I cited over thirty places as I would do for a Harvard paper (and I could have added, honestly, 100+ more citations that I researched so the article on Mary was as professional as any professional paper I would write. I don't think there is a huge conflict of interest, since I am not writing as a fan or to promote someone for monetary purposes, etc. I just noticed that there is no entry for her, and set about doing one full year of research so that I could write a truthful "dictionary-style" entry. Though this is my first time writing a Wikipedia entry, I have specialized for years in researching and writing about subjects that I have to approach with a love of the topic, and the critical eye and red pencil of a scholar. Hopefully this explanation assuages any worries about a unbalanced bias just because my parents knew Mary when I was born. If you still need this to be one step away from me, I can have someone I know who has no connection to Mary to copy and paste my work, correct any mistakes or overwriting, and monitor the editing process. As for the photographs, all the photographers are long since passed away, and during the time these photos were taken, copyright laws in Great Britain were very, very different from U.S. laws. In any case, Mary either owns the rights to the photos outright, or was given the rights to use the shots for any and all publicity purposes by the photographers in the 1940's and 1950's. The only photo included in this that was taken post 1960 was taken by Mary's husband at a public event where photography for the press was fully expected. Both Mr. Morecambe and Mr. Wise knew that Mary's husband was taking the photo, and that Mary would undoubtably share the joy of this photo of the three of them together again thirty years after they were on stage together as the bombs fell in London. Ernie & Eric have passed away many years ago, and their connection to Mary is well documented in my citations. Lastly, did you want me to research the gentlemen politician from Bourbonnais? I went to Bradley-Bourbonnais High School, though I didn't know this man. If you want me to find citations, I will gladly help, but if not, there are three other Wikipedia articles about variety entertainers that I am researching.
Most sincerely, Myra

- Myramcwethy, writing a Wikipedia page as a fan is probably the least amount of COI one can have on Wikipedia; any prose issues can be easily cleaned up by someone more experienced, after all. Family members and other personal connections (friends, etc.), along with people writing about themselves, are in a rather large gray area between that and people who are paid to edit Wikipedia.
- Unfortunately, all because you pay for a picture to be taken doesn't mean you buy the copyright for it. A more typical arrangement is that the photographer retains the copyright but sells you the photograph, in this case to use for publicity purposes but not for an online encyclopedia. I'll ask around, but I'm still inclined to believe that the photographs haven't been probably released. I dream of horses (Contribs) Please notify me after replying off my talk page. editHi!
In addition to all my Harvard Education, I am also a professional actress (you can look me up on IMDB, my website, or "Myra McWethy Vimeo" to see my most famous role on Conan O'Brien's show!). I know, very, very well, the difference between a photographer holding the rights and the photographer forsaking any rights to a photograph when you pay for a headshot. Mary says that during the time of all the headshots she had taken in London, none was by any photographer who retained the rights, because that simply wasn't legal in England at the time. Second, she says that she has contributed all of these photos in other books, newspapers, and media in the past (especially during the 1940's and 1950's and that there was never any assumption that she did not have the full and unconditional right to use them. None were taken by a photographer of great history or merit - just men who took headshots and publicity shots for people in the trade for a fixed price. I know rules are different now, and whenever I get my headshot taken I make sure I own the rights. And any publicity photos, I know who to contact for permission for the rights. But the laws were very different in England during and after the war years, and I have not heard or read other than Mary's contention that she indeed is free to okay the photos to anyone she wishes. Let me know if you got her signed okay. Let me know if I have to have someone else re-write Mary's page. Let me know if watching my first visit on Conan's show made you laugh today!!
Most sincerely, and with great appreciation, Myra Williams McWethy

- @Myramcwethy: After thinking this over, I think Mary will need to send an email to WP:OTRS regardless. This is the first time I've heard of a photographer forsaking rights on a regular basis. Needless to say, I'm doubtful, not of Marys' good faith, but of her understanding of copyright law. Thankfully, I've yet to hear of a Wikipedia article being deleted for lack of photographs; that sort of drastic action tends to be done on the basis of lack of sources. Sourcing is what you need to concentrate on. I dream of horses (Contribs) Please notify me after replying off my talk page. Thank you. 03:02, 26 August 2020 (UTC)
- It's a sticky situation. UK copyright is a mess, and unfortunately even works that used to be public domain were brought back into copyright with the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988. It's policy on the Commons to have evidence in writing (commons:Commons:Project scope/Evidence). If I'm reading this correctly, unless Mary has written evidence from the original photographers releasing their copyright, then her emailing OTRS wouldn't be fruitful because the question isn't just of Mary releasing her copyrights, but also of whether she has the copyrights in the first place. Note that I don't at all doubt the truthfulness of anyone's claims here; as much as I'd love to give the thumbs up, it's just that Commons has strict rules about requiring hard evidence.
- But I might have good news, and that is that I believe the RAF Pin-up, Accordian, and 1942 Scoop photos can be considered public domain *if* the original authors are unknown. Here is our comprehensive guide to UK copyright, and here is a (sort of) convenient flowchart that can help determine the duration of copyright for works. For photographs that have unknown authors and were created prior to June 1957, their copyright expires 70 years after creation, or 70 years after the work was made available to the public if within 70 years after creation. This means that if the authors for the previously mentioned photographs that were created prior to 1957 are unknown, their copyright has expired if they are either (a) unpublished or (b) published before 1950, and we can upload them to the Commons as public domain. If the authors *are* known, then (in most cases) copyright expires 70 years after the author's death. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 08:30, 26 August 2020 (UTC)

Question from Tuthman68
editI am trying to add to Carl Haglund's biography. He is the founder of the Carl Haglund Foundation. It is certified with the Washington State Sec of State's office and the IRS. There is a Certificate of Incorporation.
I listed the website. You took it down.
I posted verified media story as a citation. You took it down.
What DOES qualify if you won't take the actual website or a legitimate media source??!!

- @Truthman68: I'll go ahead and ping HickoryOughtShirt?4 and Schazjmd since they both left you messages on your talk page as well.
- So there's a podcast briefly mentioning Haglunds' affiliation with his namesake organization, a facebook page, and the website of the organization itself, and you've decided to highlight the organization in the lead. Why? I dream of horses (Contribs) Please notify me after replying off my talk page. Thank you. 01:07, 29 August 2020 (UTC)
Is there someplace else I should put it? Please advise. I didn't think it was "History" but more "Biography". — Preceding unsigned comment added by Truthman68 (talk • contribs) 01:41, 29 August 2020 (UTC)
- It belongs in History at the end (chronologically), we can use https://ccfs.sos.wa.gov/#/BusinessSearch/BusinessInformation as a ref as well, so it's not just a claim sourced to Haglund himself. It isn't significant enough for the lead yet; he only just formed it 3 months ago and I've been unable to find any coverage of the foundation at all outside of his own press releases. My revert was because Truthman68 also removed negative content (which summarizes basically the entire article) from the lead in their edit. Schazjmd (talk) 13:40, 29 August 2020 (UTC)

AIV removal
editI totally agree with most of what you're saying with your edit summary of this edit; but in this case I think you might have found your own counter-example. There are actually five filter log entries that are hidden from public view, as the IP in question triggered several hidden filters that are viewable only to edit-filter users and admins. Suffusion of Yellow, while not an admin, does have the edit-filter manager right that allows them to view them, so in my view that was a very appropriate AIV report. ~ mazca talk 23:35, 30 August 2020 (UTC)
- Another section was opened above while I was typing this, but the same applies. I get your motivation here, but hopefully this makes sense. ~ mazca talk 23:36, 30 August 2020 (UTC)

Removing my report from AIV
editNot going to edit war with you, but please restore my report. You can't see their private filter log, but I can, and so can all admins. Private filter log hits are not too complex for AIV in general; indeed we have a bot whose sole purpose it report users based on filter hits, some of them private. We also have a bot which removes reports after 4-6 hours, if you think reports should be removed after one hour instead, I suggest bringing it up at WT:AIV. Suffusion of Yellow (talk) 23:27, 30 August 2020 (UTC)

- Well, it's a Verizon IPv6, so by now we're probably at the point of either blocking the /44 (with collateral), or no block. I'll skip it. But for future reference, when I say "image vandalism", I mean porn. I still disagree with removing hour-old reports, and now that multiple users (myself and Sro23) have objected to the practice, I think it should be brought up at WT:AIV if you plan to continue. Suffusion of Yellow (talk) 23:55, 30 August 2020 (UTC)
- Already blocked the specific IP, per the section below here. I'd broadly agree that removing stale reports that aggressively is not particularly helpful at this point - if AIV is getting badly backlogged, it's still preferable for the stale reports to be removed by someone with the technical ability to block them if something's been missed. There's a bot that does it after 4 hours, and sometimes there's just a general shortage of admins so there might be a delay. ~ mazca talk 23:59, 30 August 2020 (UTC)
- Mazca, generally, a shortage of admins will result in reports getting rejected because of their staleness, anyway. Four hours is, IMO, a long time to wait. I dream of horses (Contribs) Please notify me after replying off my talk page. Thank you. 00:44, 31 August 2020 (UTC)

A message from Myramcwethy
editHi!
In the photo of "A Merchant Seaman Comes to Town..." Mary Naylor is the girl dancing in the dead center of the photo. We have a side view of her, with her right hand holding the merchant seaman with the tie right in the middle. We see half her face, and is the only "Named" person in the photo. For her to show up and dance with the guys was a huge deal at the time since we was the breakout star in a West End London show getting huge press, then on to her first movie role. I have been working hard to cite everything in my submission for Mrs. Naylor-Kodell. There are only a few places where I don't quite know how to put in verification.
1st Case in point: I have newspaper proof of every single week that the Youth Takes A Bow tour played all over Great Britain. Do you want me to list each week and the corresponding newspaper(s) to verify my claim of how many weeks the troupe worked and where in 1939, 1940, 1941, and 1942? 2nd Case in point: All troupes were told to carry on performing during bombings if the air raid horns did not go off before the bombs dropped. The children in the YTAB cast were not exempt from this rule. I can't find anything stating that all shows played on during bombings at this point, but it is generally well known in the London theatre community. Can I leave this point in the narrative, or do I have to first find proof through some source?
I am going to re-format the "Selected Shows" section of her Wikipedia entry, and then I believe the complete text will be done. I will work with Mary next week on the photos. An extra note: I have examined all of the photos I submitted (except the sheet music) and there are NO copyright stamps, nor is the photo studio stamped on the front or back of the photo. In my experience with head shots and shots from shows, unless the copyright is printed on the photo, the arrangement between the photographer and the subject is that with payment for the photo, the copyright belongs to the artist, not the photographer. Since she doesn't remember who shot what photo, and the 70 years since the pictures were taken, she assumes the photographers are dead, because she does remember that they were all older men. Since she is 94 and a half, the chance of her finding any of these photographers alive is nil. So we will approach that division of this process with anything we can to get the photos onboard.
Thank you for all your help. Sincerely, Myramcwethy (talk) 23:24, 30 August 2020 (UTC)Myra McWethy
Myramcwethy (talk) 23:24, 30 August 2020 (UTC)
- Myramcwethy, we assume full copyright here unless proven otherwise. This prevents lawsuits. The photographers could very well have an estate that is being managed by an heir. They might be okay with Wikipedia using the photographs, but not okay with our free culture license policy, which would allow things like selling the photographs for commercial purposes, altering it, etc..
- Concentrate on the text of the article instead of the photographs. I dream of horses (Contribs) Please notify me after replying off my talk page. Thank you. 23:35, 30 August 2020 (UTC)

"Stale" AIV reports
editBy all means, keep removing declined AIV reports, it helps with clutter. But the stale ones? I think your definition of "stale" and my definition of "stale" differ. These reports had only been up for an hour, this one for 45 minutes, and this one for only half an hour! You need to allow admins more time to react to reports, because not all vandals are red hot and now, some will continue to vandalize over an extended period of time until blocked (like with that last report you removed for being stale, the IP vandalized for a longer period of time, with the most recent instance being only two minutes earlier). Also, some reports are more complex and by nature take longer to process. Unless AIV is super extremely backlogged, I wouldn't worry about removing stale reports at all. In fact, there's a bot for that very task! Thanks again for your hard work, but please give admins at the very least a couple of hours to respond. Sro23 (talk) 23:22, 30 August 2020 (UTC)
- Sro23, admins aren't that unique among Wikipedians, beyond having a few extra buttons. That's the bias I have.
- Complex reports aren't suitable for AIV; they really need to be reported on another noticeboard. Vandals continuing to vandalize can be re-reported. There's no consensus on whether or not to remove reports before the bot does. I dream of horses (Contribs) Please notify me after replying off my talk page. Thank you. 23:28, 30 August 2020 (UTC)
- That's true, but the title of the page is Administrator intervention against vandalism, because ultimately, while I greatly respect and appreciate your long experience with vandal fighting, admins are the ones who will be blocking or declining to block the reported users. And sometimes, for what could be several reasons, these admins need more time. If we look at this from a cost-benefit view, what would be the benefits of removing a report after 30 min-1 hour? It helps with clutter and reduces the backlog/frees up space for newer reports. Okay, that's fine and good, but what are the costs? Vandals continue to vandalize the project, and aren't always re-reported (let's say the only person keeping an eye on the vandal was the reporter themselves, and they go AFK after making the report or otherwise don't know their report was removed and think it's still there). I came here concerned because a vandal that should have been blocked, wasn't, because you removed the report. It looks like I'm not the only one who thinks a report you removed as stale was still valid and actionable. I just think there's no harm in letting the bot do its thing. Sro23 (talk) 00:24, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
- Sro23, admins are only editors with extra buttons. I'm not going to change my behavior if one of the main reasons you object is the fact I'm not an admin. The situation you're referring to was the first time I've run into an exception for this issue. Yes, the benefits include less clutter, reducing the backlog, and freeing up space for newer reports, which has more weight than the quite doubtful scenario that the reporter being the only person to note that the reportee is being blalantly vandalistic in a half-hour. If the vandalism isn't blatant enough to be obvious to more than one person in a half hour to an hour, particularly during daytime hours in the western hemisphere, AIV is not the appropriate spot to report it. I dream of horses (Contribs) Please notify me after replying off my talk page. Thank you. 00:42, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
...quite doubtful scenario that the reporter being the only person to note that the reportee is being blalantly vandalistic in a half-hour
: I don't understand this. Once one report has been made, no one else is likely to report anything. For all anyone knows, ten users have noticed the vandalism, said "oh it's already reported; someone will deal with it" and done nothing. In fact Twinkle won't even let you report an users who's already on the board. Suffusion of Yellow (talk) 00:55, 31 August 2020 (UTC)- Suffusion of Yellow, if the report has been removed, I've seen people re-report; I've also seen people make a duplicate report manually when AIV is backlogged enough, which is why AIV helperbot will merge duplicate reports. - I don't think people should be forced to make "me too" reports every half hour, to prevent their removal by you. That would likely clutter the board, and would completely change the functioning of what is currently a well-oiled machine. Suffusion of Yellow (talk) 01:02, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
- Suffusion of Yellow, I doubt many "me too" reports would happen. I do this in part because most vandals get bored after a few hours at the most extreme. Shared IPs are an exception, but they represent multiple people. I dream of horses (Contribs) Please notify me after replying off my talk page. Thank you. 01:55, 31 August 2020 (UTC)

- Really? I mean...you really don't think you're stepping on anyone's toes here? WP:RFPP also has quite a backlog, so I'm curious as to why I never see you removing stale reports from there. Anyway, I figure it would be best if we get more opinions on this, so I've started a discussion about this issue here. Sro23 (talk) 01:13, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
- Sro23, I'm only stepping on a small minority of toes by doing this; a representation of that small minority has showed up on my talk page. I dream of horses (Contribs) Please notify me after replying off my talk page. Thank you. 01:56, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
