TemplateParametersTool

edit

Hello, is there a problem with the TemplateParametersTool as the output is still showing May results? Keith D (talk) 19:35, 9 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Keith D: The data extract that the tool uses is slow to be produced by Wikipedia. enwiki is being processed right now. Should be ready in a couple of hours. --Bamyers99 (talk) 20:29, 9 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the information. Keith D (talk) 22:01, 9 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

July

edit

I see that June was produced on (about) the 9th. Is this the expected schedule? Wikipedia:WikiProject Fraternities and Sororities just discovered this tool and we are *very* excited at using it to sort out usages of Template:Infobox Fraternity. I know it arrives when it arrives. (And thank you for creating this!)Naraht (talk) 21:09, 2 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Naraht: The process has to wait for a giant file with all of the articles in it to be produced by Wikipedia. The file is called pages-articles.xml and is about 21.0 GB. The current file creation progress can be found at enwiki dump progress. The Template bot tool checks the file creation progress every hour, and automatically extracts the template info when the file is complete. --Bamyers99 (talk) 21:55, 2 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. On a question in terms of usage. If a template occurs 787 times and one parameter is used 786 times, any suggestions on finding the one? We can certainly alter the template and cause the missing one to show up in a maintenance Category that we create for that parameter, but if there is an easier way using your tool.Naraht (talk) 23:34, 2 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Naraht: If a parameter has a "Required" or "Suggested" Status in the TemplateData configuration on the templates documentation page, then a "missing" link will be displayed for that parameter in the report. --Bamyers99 (talk) 00:11, 3 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Is CleanupWorklistBot stalled?

edit

CleanupWorklistBot has apparently not run yet. I have usually seen its results by now as it's Tuesday afternoon. Do you know if it's stuck or something? Stefen Towers among the rest! GabGruntwerk 19:43, 2 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

@StefenTower: I received an email when it failed, but I did not read it closely and assumed it was for another bot with a similar name that runs every hour and can handle failures. I restarted the Cleanup bot and it has finished. --Bamyers99 (talk) 00:51, 3 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Category added

edit

Yesterday I deleted the category Statistical Mechanics from the page Maxwell construction because the article has nothing to do with statistical mechanics, but later you added it back. Is this because every page needs a category? If so the category should be Thermodynamics not Statistical Mechanics. Should I change it? Will you? Airman72 (talk) 14:11, 17 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Airman72: I didn't know it was an intentional category deletion. I come across a number of unintentional category deletions. Every article needs to be categorized per WP:CATSPECIFIC. I have changed it to Thermodynamics. --Bamyers99 (talk) 17:11, 17 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

TemplateParametersTool question

edit

I have some (maybe many) questions about this amazing tool of which I only minutes ago became aware. To start, I would love to know how far back the data collection goes and if it's possible to access said data? Relatedly, is it possible to see the total number of articles with template parameters (of any kind) and to track that number over time? I would be happy to email these and other questions if that's preferable. NASAvegas (talk) 23:42, 31 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

@NASAvegas: There is no historical data. It does not track total articles with template parameters. It only looks at templates that have Wikipedia:TemplateData defined. --Bamyers99 (talk) 23:58, 31 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Do you know if that general template data is available anywhere? I'm curious if there's been an increase in the number of articles that have been flagged as having content issues. NASAvegas (talk) 16:41, 1 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@NASAvegas: The doc page of a template has the TemplateData embedded in it as a JSON object. Example: Template:Infobox_lighthouse/doc#TemplateData. Given your low number of edits [6], why the sudden interest in these topics? --Bamyers99 (talk) 18:46, 1 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
I'm interested in the data as a potential research topic. (And I'm generally more interested in researching Wikipedia than editing Wikipedia, although I would think 100+ edits is a relatively *high* number as most people make zero.)
I confess to not knowing what a JSON object is or how that helps me arrive at usage figures. I see that on some Template pages (e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:BLP_primary_sources) you can see a number ("This template is used on approximately 6,000 pages"), which is apparently produced via this Link Count tool. Again, I'm just wondering if there's a tool available that could tell me how many articles have template parameters of any kind and if that number has substantially changed over time. (Apologies if I'm using terminology incorrectly here.) NASAvegas (talk) 19:16, 1 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
