Recent changes

• Tidy is going to be replaced with an HTML5 parsing algorithm. Bad HTML in wikitext would cause problems on a number of wikis. There is now a ParserMigration extension on all wikis that you can use to help clean this up. You can read more about how you can use it. [1]

Changes this week

• Some older web browsers will not be able to use JavaScript on Wikimedia wikis from this week. If you have an old web browser on your computer you can upgrade to a newer version. [2]
• New filters for Recent changes will come to Wikidata and Persian, Russian, Turkish and French Wikipedia on 11 April. The schedule has been changed to fix the user intent prediction filters for some wikis. User intent prediction means the filter tries to make it easier for editors to determine if the edit was made in good faith or not. Other wikis will get it later. [3]
• The list of special characters in the wikitext editor and the visual editor will now have a group of Canadian Aboriginal characters. [4]
• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 11 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 12 April. It will be on all wikis from 13 April (calendar).

Deletion of Prince Consort Road stadium

hi Jo-Jo Eumerus, You deleted the Prince Consort Road stadium article. I think that article didn't deserve to be listed and deleted for the reasons it was, and the consensus that appeared to exist in the deletion discussion was based on incorrect application of Wikipedia policies.

User Number 57 proposed it explicitly on the basis that it was a proposed, but never built, building. That in itself is not a reason to delete an article, because WP:NOTTEMPORARY. If the building was notable before it was cancelled, it remains notable after it was cancelled. Number 57 dismissed that as WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS, but this is unfair. If there are rules for what makes a stadium notable, you have to be able to refer to them. If there aren't, if all you have to go on is WP:GNG, then you have to be able to consciously correct for anti-Northern bias, where streets and toilets and staircases are considered notable when they're in London, but large stadiums are considered non-notable when they're in Tyneside. WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS causes systemic bias when it's used to shut down arguments.

I tried to challenge Number 57 on his talk page about what his unstated notability criteria were, but he claimed he never actually used "it was cancelled" as an argument (the evidence that he did is right there in the deletion debate) and then deleted the discussion. He cited a rule that stadiums are notable if they have hosted national-level sport and non-notable if they haven't, which as far as I can tell he just made up on the spot to make me go away.

I'd like the article to come back, but its not my main concern. My main concern is how Wikipedia's policy of "considering everything in isolation", combined with fewer active Wikipedians than there used to be, combined with WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS, will always lead to bias. The fewer people are actively working on the project, the more need there is for notability guidelines that are written down. How do you even go about proposing new notability guidelines? @Chi Sigma: Greetings. The problem with never completed buildings is that there are much fewer sources that you can use to write an article with than with buildings which were complete. WP:GEOFEAT is the already existing guideline for buildings and as you can see, they generally need to have some kind of notoriety. attribution redirect

• Hello and thank you for all your pertinent replies. The sandbox won't be ready for a day or two at least; User:Clarityfiend is giving it a copy edit. After that, it'll be ready to go... At that time, does the attribution redirect need to be created and put in place at exactly the same moment as text is moved, or can there be a lag of a day perhaps before it is created? I think it would be overkill to synchronize our watches (cellphones?) like characters in a war movie...

My recollection is, you asked if the sandbox could be blanked, I said "Sure do whatever you need," then I waited a day (thinking you would blank it), then blanked it myself. As far as I know, I don't need the oldest history of my sandbox to be anywhere in particular. I don't know why I would need it, or what I would use it for. Is there some reason I would need it? I don't think so... the "Bengal famine" stuff is the only stuff there that's worth saving or using... does that answer your questions? Hi! A while back, I created the page Steve Hagerty, which you deleted. Hagerty has now been elected mayor of Evanston, Illinois, a large suburb of Chicago, and I believe Evanston's mayor is notable enough to merit an article, given the last two mayors have their own articles. Recent changes

• New filters for recent changes are now available as a beta feature on most wikis. You can turn it on in your preferences. Remaining wikis will have the new filters on 9 May. [12]
• When administrators, bureaucrats and stewards make a user a member of a user group they can now set an expiry date. A user group is for example "administrators" or "bots". This means that they can give someone user rights for a limited time. This is similar to how blocks and page protections can be limited in time. Special:UserRights will have new options for this. You can read more about user groups. [13]

Problems

• Since the data centre test last week the content translation tool has been disabled. This is because of a database problem. It will be back as soon as the problem has been solved. [14]

Changes this week

• The GuidedTour extension will be enabled on all wikis. This is a tool to explain to new users how to edit. [15]
• Wiktionary will handle interlanguage links in a new way. The Cognate extension will automatically link pages with the same title between Wiktionaries. For this to work all old interlanguage links have to be removed. You can read more about this. [16]
• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 25 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 26 April. It will be on all wikis from 27 April (calendar).

Cascade protection

Hello JJE. Do you know what the rationale was for cascade-protecting the citation templates? Any admin who carries out your proposed unprotections at WP:RFPP will probably have to undo all of that. There is a big list at Wikipedia:Cascade-protected items/content#Citation templates. It seems that such an apparently large change might deserve a wider discussion, for example at WP:AN. Greetings, @EdJohnston:. The citation templates are often very widely used ({{Cite web}} has over two and a half million transclusions) and were thus protected. Not all citation templates ended up being that widely used and furthermore the cascading pre-dates the implementation of template protection. I've been going around to suss these moderately used templates out and have requested downprotection at RfPP in some cases to get second opinions. I agree with the theory that template protection should be used when appropriate. But the code of these templates does not seem to allow for useful modification, so I don't see the upside of lowering protection. See the code of {{cite news}}:

All the work is being done by the Lua code in Module:citation/CS1. It is hard to see anything here that non-experts could tinker with. The Lua code is full-protected as you would expect. The murder of Margaret Mcwilliam (21 September 1965 - 27 August 1987) was committed inside Warden Woods Park, Toronto, Ontario. Canada, on 27 August 1987. 21 year-old Margaret was beaten, raped and murdered by an unknown male suspect. At around 7:00 PM on August 27 1987 Margaret left her basement apartment that she has rented in Santomonica Blvd. She went for her regular jog in Warden Woods Park which she entered on the southwest corner of Warden and St.Clair. While jogging Margaret was apparently ambushed by her offender, who dragged her of the path of Warden Woods Park and to a secluded area on the Park, where the offender fought with Margaret and beat her up. The offender took off her clothes and raped her, then used her sweatshirt to strangle her until she died. The offender left her clothes in a neat pile around her and took her headphones from her walkman. Police say the offender had a easy escape. The next morning when Margaret was not seen at work, her manager called the house where she rented the basement. The owner checked and found her keys dangling in the lock. Police were called. Later that afternoon a police tracker dog found her body. She was found face up with bruises all over her face with two blackened eyes. A few months later police came up with a composite sketch and the description of the shoes of a light skinned black man with a moustache seen leaving Warden Woods Park at around 8:00 PM. A reward was announced for anyone who can lead into the arrest, but it was never claimed. More recently a strong male DNA profile has been created from the crime scene, but he is not in the National DNA databank so he is not a recognized person. Thanks, Jo-Jo. Can you check the edit history to see if here was any vandalism? I did an RS check to see if there was any new developments that might justify keeping the article, but by the time I got back it had been deleted. Which I'm fine with. I just wondered about one particular edit that mentioned her sweatshirt had been tied with a 'granny knot,' and later wondered if that was vandalism. Recent changes

• The content translation tool works again. It was turned off because of a database problem. [17]
• Scripts using very old deprecated wikibits functions show errors. These functions have not worked since 2013. You should fix or disable broken scripts. You can see examples of how to upgrade scripts. This is the same thing as Tech News wrote about in issue 2017/16. You need to add mw.loader.using( 'mediawiki.util' ) block for your scripts also, or add mediawiki.util dependency in gadget ResourceLoader section in MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition. [18][19]

Problems

• Because of a data centre test you will be able to read but not edit the wikis for 20 to 30 minutes on 3 May. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time. You can read more about this.

Changes this week

• There is no new MediaWiki version this week. This is because of the data centre test.

Meetings

• You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 2 May at 19:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Future changes

• All Wikimedia wikis will have cookie blocks from May 8. This is an extension to the autoblock system so when a user is blocked, the next time they visit the wiki a cookie will be set. This means that even if the user switches accounts and to a new IP address the cookie will block them again. [20]
• The Publish changes, Show preview and Show changes buttons will look slightly different. This is to fit with the OOUI look. Users can test scripts, gadgets and so on to see if they work with the new interface by adding &ooui=1 to the URL. [21]

Hi Eumerus,
I was recently requested by Kevin Michael Schmitz to Wikify and establish the notability of the article Kevin Michael Schmitz, as per Wikipedia policies. But I found that the article has already been deleted by you. It was previously deleted four times as well. So I just made a draft of the article here, as per WP:BLP. I don't have intention to create a biased, self-promoting article (I saw the article recently before it was deleted by you, that was not a proper article - I believe). Would you please have a look at the draft and let me know your opinion, whether it is okay?
