Thank you for the kind messages. I have decided to return to editing here. I missed it too much to give up entirely. I don't know how active I will be. I'll see how it goes. John (talk) 20:34, 13 August 2022 (UTC)

Yes, thanks for the note. Good to see you back, good to hear from you, hope you enjoyed the break. I'm in and out - more out than in, but am somewhat around. Victoria (tk) 19:34, 14 August 2022 (UTC)
Good to see you back, John, thanks for your encouragement for the music articles I've worked on in this past - I still want to write over 200 GAs so there is work to do. You should be able to request admin rights at WP:BN if you want them, otherwise I'm sure somebody can run an RfA for you. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 10:56, 15 August 2022 (UTC)
- Actually according to Wikipedia:Administrators#Restoration_of_adminship a period of over two years with no edits requires a new RfA. -- Pawnkingthree (talk) 14:47, 15 August 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you both. I have no immediate plans to seek restoration of my admin bit. John (talk) 15:11, 15 August 2022 (UTC)

Hey there!
editOne good new thing for editors ... Wikipedia Library. You'll have to stick around for a bit to get access, probably, but it's a great resource for editing articles. Welcome back! Ealdgyth (talk) 15:16, 15 August 2022 (UTC)
Flags
editHi! Why are you removing all flags from the articles? I read the rule and it seems that the flag with the country name in the infobox is fine. Cofcorpse (talk) 06:50, 24 August 2022 (UTC)

Waaaaay back in 2012, you redirected this school stub to the Perth article. The redirect came up as a speedy this week, which I had to decline as it's too old. As schools can't be speedied under A7, I've raised it at AfD. Just letting you know as your redirect was based on notability. Discussion is at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Oakbank Primary School. Thanks. GedUK 11:46, 25 August 2022 (UTC)

Wikiproject Military history coordinator election nominations opening soon
editNominations for the upcoming project coordinator election are opening in a few hours (00:01 UTC on 1 September). A team of up to ten coordinators will be elected for the next coordination year. The project coordinators are the designated points of contact for issues concerning the project, and are responsible for maintaining our internal structure and processes. They do not, however, have any authority over article content or editor conduct, or any other special powers. More information on being a coordinator is available here. If you are interested in running, please sign up here by 23:59 UTC on 14 September! Voting doesn't commence until 15 September. If you have any questions, you can contact any member of the current coord team. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 17:51, 31 August 2022 (UTC)
Joan of Arc
editI was going to wait until the FARC on Joan closed before sharing the compliments, but your barnstar touched me, John, thank you! I may have expressed this before, but I want to state it again. Your joining the Joan FARC project was one of the greatest gifts to me. I feel you complimented my weakness regarding the proofreading well. You cleaned up flow, created more felicitous grammar, provided insight into difficult to resolve problems.
Somewhere about two or three months ago, I had finally gotten to that point where I was unsure how to move forward. I felt I had addressed the original concerns, and it felt like most of the follow-up criticism was becoming non-productive. Then you and SandyGeorgia joined in to help out in a way that was truly collaborative and brought life back to the project. You two created a great energy, and when Sandy in her stone-soup way invited some great FARC reviewers, who have jumped in, the whole process transformed into a positive, dynamic, and productively focused on making this article one of the best. It has also invigorated me, as it has brought that sense of collaboration that I was looking for in a FARC. Moving forward, I will keep in mind that your joining this was one of those turning points that made working on the article brought back that spirit that is one of the driving forces for why I chose to work on Wikipedia articles.
Your ability to project patience and kindness through what is an essentially functional process is a true strength that creates a positive enviroment that is enjoyable to work in. Sometimes I caught myself looking forward to seeing what you edited and what insights you had to share, as it often pointed out next steps for me. Who knows, even though Wikispace seems almost infinite, we may find ourselves working together on another FAR or FARC in the future. If so, I look forward to it. Thank you so much! Wtfiv (talk) 15:57, 1 September 2022
- Thanks a lot for the nice comments! Working this FARC with you, Sandy, Victoria and the others, has been absolutely delightful. It should absolutely go without saying that if there is any other piece of collaborative work needing done, you should ping me. I have to be a bit judicious with what I focus on; it has to be something that interests me at least a little, and where I see realistic possibilities for improvement. But keep me in mind. Very best wishes, John (talk) 17:55, 1 September 2022 (UTC)
Things
editGreat to see you back, and its encouraging to have an editor of your ability around again. Hope you had a good and safe covid. Ceoil (talk) 09:05, 4 September 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks, glad you're still here. I survived Covid, twice. Not great but I'm still here too. John (talk) 10:24, 4 September 2022 (UTC)
- At my age, just being is a pleasure. In your absence, I finally took Cut the Crap to FAC. Bernie Rhodes, who edits here quite a lot, was not pleased, and there were long conversations via numerous ips and usernames. He's a gas and extremely verbose man; liked him a lot and it was a rare pleasure as he almost never gives interviews. Ceoil (talk) 11:46, 10 September 2022 (UTC)
- Wow! So you have. Nice work. John (talk) 18:00, 10 September 2022 (UTC)
John, welcome back! I missed seeing you around (although lately I haven't been on here as much—though I do hope to be back more regularly at some point). I appreciated your help and support on a number of articles. For this article [[1]] your vote of confidence, and Ceoil's, seemed to be key supports that helped promote the article, and I was grateful. I hope we can cross paths again soon on some article or others. Cheers! Moisejp (talk) 00:03, 18 September 2022 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for September 18
editHi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited B roads in Zone 7 of the Great Britain numbering scheme, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Sorn. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

September music
editThank you for improving articles in September! Yesterday, we sang old music for two choirs at church, pictured, scroll to the image of the organ of the month of the Diocese of Limburg (my perspective), and if you have time, watch the video about it. And today I wrote an article about music premiered today, Like as the hart. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:47, 19 September 2022 (UTC)

- Its size and importance. I don't think that distinction exists in German. Our article says: "Leipzig has been a trade city since at least the time of the Holy Roman Empire." John (talk) 20:31, 22 September 2022 (UTC)
- thank you - for project Germany, it's just size, and sure the present Leipzig is a city by that standard. While I understand importance, we have Town privileges, therefore I came to use city for modern places of enough population, but usually town for historic ones. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:27, 23 September 2022 (UTC)
- It's a very beautiful city. I visited for the first time in 2017. It is sacred to me as the place where the revolution started, giving us all hope that unjust states do not last forever. John (talk) 22:28, 23 September 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you. I visited with "my" Idstein choir, hearing the Thomanerchor three times. At Bach's time, they sang cantatas in the church where the demonstrations started (but the present interior design was installed later). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:45, 23 September 2022 (UTC)

A.C. Monza
editHi, thanks for the small copyedit. I think replacing "journey" with "season" doesn't give the same meaning ([2]). I'm trying to convey the message that Monza began in the Serie A (in general) with a 2-1 defeat, since this is their first ever season. What other word do you think might work? Nehme1499 15:17, 20 September 2022 (UTC)
- Well, not "journey", because a journey involves movement. Their journey was the process that led up to their presence in Serie A, not their first season there. John (talk) 16:02, 20 September 2022 (UTC)

Between vs. Among
editBetween applies to two items. Among is used for 3 or more items. That's not my rule; it's what the words mean. RationalPedant (talk) 23:57, 21 September 2022 (UTC)
- A lot of people think that. But it isn't true. Grammarly describes it as a "myth". John (talk) 06:08, 22 September 2022 (UTC)
Soham murders
editThanks John. Some meandering content needed trimming. Enquiry as opposed to inquiry is more formal in British English? Different sites convey conflicting messages. Could you check this for me when you have a few moments. Thanks again. Kieronoldham (talk) 20:42, 22 September 2022 (UTC)
- No, thank you for writing such a comprehensive article. I'll look into "enquiry" versus "inquiry". John (talk) 20:43, 22 September 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks. British English and American English seem to overlap at times (even on reputable sites). Best regards, --Kieronoldham (talk) 20:46, 22 September 2022 (UTC)
- They are interchangeable but "inquiry" seems to be favoured for uses like this, so I changed it back. "Inquiry" is the spelling the government used. Thank you for your vigilance. John (talk) 20:49, 22 September 2022 (UTC)

Unhelpful, unexplained
editI note that you didn't respond to a post here complaining about your nonresponse to a post elsewhere complaining about your post regarding someone's post complaining about yet another person's post relating to an earlier post commenting on a post of one of the persons complaining about the post responding to the other post. Yes, that's about the size of it, User:EEng. Here's the original post:
(start of quote)
I note that, while actively editing [3], you did not reply to my post [4] regarding your intrusive post on my talkpage. I therefor consider your post unhelpful, and not contributing to any improvement at all. I advise to refresh your knowledge of basic talk habits, for example this and this section. I judge your post to be on a scale from uninformed pateralistic to gaming the system—unhelpful and undesired. Altogether, I state that you are not welcome to edit on my talkpage. DePiep (talk) 10:03, 25 September 2022 (UTC)
(end of quote)
I did read DePiep's response to (what was meant to be) a friendly note on his talk page, considered replying, then noticed he had deleted the conversation. I'm not a great fan of having conversations split across multiple places, so when I saw their message here I deleted it, with my best attempt at a conciliatory edit summary.
I think I stand by my original advice to DePiep, that templating someone who is experienced here is unlikely to effect a positive change in their behaviour. But I can also see that my own intervention has not really helped anyone either. Sorry about that; my intentions were good and what I said was sincere. DePiep is probably not the only one who thinks I am "uninformed [and] pateralistic", as I have three daughters who might doubtless say the same. Luckily I am no longer bound by the provisions of WP:ADMINACCT nor ever likely to be, so it doesn't really matter. It's been an interesting reminder that folks who sign up to write a free encyclopedia can get passionate about the strangest things. I include myself in that. Take care, John (talk) 11:33, 26 September 2022 (UTC)
- I'm trying to decide whether or not you realize my OP was made in jest. Years of experience have shown that DePiep consistently misinterprets social interactions, always in the direction of seeing dark motives in others' actions -- see David Eppstein's bullet near the bottom of WP:Administrators'_noticeboard/IncidentArchive1018#EEng_agression, and WP:Editing_restrictions#DePiep. So don't beat yourself up. EEng 14:55, 26 September 2022 (UTC)
- No, I totally understood that your OP was humorous, but like all your best comments, there was a serious point behind it, which I tried to answer. Interesting that DePiep is under these restrictions; a more thin-skinned person than myself might have reported him to AN/I. Never mind; I'm just here to improve some articles these days. Thanks for your continuing ability to remind us of the deep silliness that sometimes manifests when we are passionate. We all need that sometimes. John (talk) 16:08, 26 September 2022 (UTC)
- Even though he annoys the hell out of me, there's something sad about him that prevents me from making trouble for him. EEng 17:26, 26 September 2022 (UTC)

Nonmetal
editHi John; I noticed you'd returned recently. Nice to see you're active again.
Some years ago you helped me with some copyediting which resulted in an elements-related article (I forget which one) being promoted to FAC.
Would you be able to bring your CE talent to the nonmetal article? I rec'd help from Sandy Georgia with copy editing the early part of it and then copy edited the rest of it on the basis of what I learnt from her. The article has been through five unsuccessful FAC's, and 2 PR's. It seems the only thing missing is a final CE check and top up. I'd be surprised if the CE work involved would be particularly onerous.
Thank you, Sandbh (talk) 06:20, 29 September 2022 (UTC).
- Of course. Thank you for asking. John (talk) 06:25, 29 September 2022 (UTC)
G'day John. Are you still in long, hard thinking mode or could I proceed and implement the proposed changes set out at the talk page? I know you don't appreciate a moving target. Thank you. — Sandbh (talk) 05:52, 21 October 2022 (UTC)

Hi John. I've implemented the changes discussed on the talk page. Per your comment, I hope you'll be pleased to learn that I've removed mention of electronegativity from the lede. Andrew Jackson needs a barber, a clean up and maybe a bit of extra trimming.
editHi John! I pinged you on the Talk:Andrew Jackson page, but I'm not sure it may have popped up. Here's what I put:
You had mentioned you'd be open to copy editing Andrew Jackson. I've recently finished with a major trim and edit of the the biography sections (i.e., the sections between the lead and the legacy) and I was wondering if you have the time and energy to put your talents to work cleaning this up. I've done a first-pass trim, but there are still weeds that need plucking. You are used to my ability to torture prose, so it shouldn't be too bad on your side, and I think Joan of Arc shows we can do a pretty good job together. And who knows, maybe it'd be fun to do. Please let me know, and if you are game, please just jump in and go at it!
The page has calmed down, and seems to be a positive working space. I'm now working on the legacy, and at the end I'm hoping to get a team to do a reworking of the lead. But those sections I edit could use a serious clean up, maybe even more trimming. (As will the legacy, when I work it out). If this article is not something you're interested or able to take on, I more than understand. It was contentious, and it is long, but I thought asking you was worth a try. Thanks! Wtfiv (talk) 20:59, 5 October 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you for asking. I'll be delighted to take a look. John (talk) 21:01, 5 October 2022 (UTC)

- It might be a day or two, Wtfiv. Things are busy here. But I'll get to it. John (talk) 02:23, 8 October 2022 (UTC)
- I get it, there's so much to be done in Wikipedia land, and then there's our personal life! I'll still work on legacy while waiting, but I'm so glad you'll take a look! Wtfiv (talk) 02:37, 8 October 2022 (UTC)

Thanks a lot for your interest in spelling variants, but it's time to move on to something more interesting like improving the article to try to get through FAC. Doesn't this interest you? This will make interesting reading for you, perhaps, if you want to learn even more on the topic of spelling variants. John (talk) 06:19, 10 October 2022 (UTC)

You've been unsubscribed from the Feedback Request Service
editHi John! You're receiving this notification because you were previously subscribed to the Feedback Request Service, but you haven't made any edits to the English Wikipedia in over six months.
In order to declutter the Feedback Request Service list, and to produce a greater chance of active users being randomly selected to receive invitations to contribute, you've been unsubscribed, along with all other users who have made no edits in six months.
You do not need to do anything about this - if you are happy to not receive Feedback Request Service messages, thank you very much for your contributions in the past, and this will be the last you hear from the service. If, however, you would like to resubscribe yourself, you can follow the below instructions to do so:
- Go to the Feedback Request Service page.
- Decide which categories are of interest to you, under the RfC and/or GA headings.
- Paste
{{Frs user|John|limit}}
underneath the relevant heading(s), where limit is the maximum number of requests you wish to receive for that category per month. - Publish the page.
If you've just come back after a wikibreak and are seeing this message, welcome back! You can follow the above instructions to re-activate your subscription. Likewise, if this is an alternate account, please consider subscribing your main account in much the same way.
Note that if you had a rename and left your old name subscribed to the FRS, you may be receiving this message on your new username's talk page still. If so, make sure your new account name is subscribed to the FRS, using the same procedure mentioned above.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask on the Feedback Request Service talk page, or on the Feedback Request Service bot's operator's talk page. Thank you! Message delivered to you with love by Yapperbot :) | Is this wrong? Contact my bot operator. | Sent at 18:00, 8 May 2023 (UTC)
