Effects of Hurricane Noel in the United States DYK suggestion

You recently suggested Effects of Hurricane Noel in the United States for DYK. I had already suggested it yesterday and you probably didn't realize this. (A reviewer called the article well-written and GA material, BTW). I have taken the liberty of combining your suggestion with mine. See the August 30 section of T:TDYK. Just clarifying. Nice job on Thailand!

Your pic insertions inspired me to fill more blank space.

There's still a couple blank spots that could be filled nicely with pics: the foreign relations section and culture section.

See List of basic Thailand topics.

I tried to show how Thailand is a mix of modern and primitive culture. They've got skyscrapers, but lots of their people still live in huts.

Your turn. :)

Have fun.

I'm interested in contributing to an article, but all articles seem to be expanded to full potential. As a lead member of the project, I was wondering if there was any articles that need to be created, expanded, etc. that have references available. If you know any of these, I'd love to work on them. Sources for Hurricane Noel

Sorry, I missed your message on IRC. My speakers are broken so I didn't hear it beeping at me. For retired storms I like to use http://www.reliefweb.int. For example, their Hurricane Noel archive has 412 documents, which can be sorted by Country, Region, Sector, Publisher, etc. It's a great site. Plasticup T/C 02:16, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

Motto of the day

Hello, I notice you're using one of the {{motd}} templates, run by Wikipedia:Motto of the day. You may have noticed that some of the mottos recently have been followed by a date from 2006, or on occasion simply "Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia". The reason for this is that Motto of the day is in some very serious need of help. Participation in the project, which has never been especially high, has dropped considerably over this past summer, to the point we have had several days where no motto was scheduled to appear at all. Over the past several weeks, I've been the only editor scheduling mottos at all, but there aren't enough comments on some of these mottos to justify their use. If we do not get some help - and soon - your daily mottos will stop. In order for us to continue updating these templates for you, we need your help.

When you get a chance between your normal editing, could you stop by our nominations page and leave a few comments on some of the mottos there, especially those that do not have any comments yet? This works very simply; you read a motto, decide whether or not you like it, and post your opinion just below the motto. That's it - no experience required, just an idea of what you personally like and what you feel reflects Wikipedia and its community. If you do have past experience with the project, then please close some of the older nominations once they've got a decent consensus going. There are directions on the nominations page on how to do this.

If you have any questions, please let me know, or post on the project's talk page. I'm looking forward to reading your comments on the suggested mottos, and any additional suggestions you'd like to make. Until then, happy editing! Hersfold (t/a/c) 02:33, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

Minor help needed

Greetings Juliancolton! I really need your help. Could you, please, make a read-over and a simple copy-edit in the Meshuggah article? It won't be many issues, because I made only few changes since it was error-free. I want to go with it to FAC and you would help me very much if you do that. Have a nice day!--  LYKANTROP  18:31, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

That is great! I've nominated it right now: Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Meshuggah. I expect that two sources will be asked. Fuzz.com and Rockdetector. I've discussed both of them. Both with Ealdgyth: (link) and Rockdetector on RS/Noticeboard (link). Rockdetector must be asserted - it is renowned and professionas source, thus should be acceptable. If the Fuzz.com is a problem, I can delete it. That should be all.. Thank you for the offer!--  LYKANTROP  20:41, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

Hallo Juliancolton! I need your help on Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Meshuggah. There is the last issue with the sources to sort out. Can you help with that please?--  LYKANTROP  14:31, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

Thanks you for your last comment! I fixed the remaining sourcing issue! Can you express your opinion about the article now? I dont want it to get stuck. :) --  LYKANTROP  21:12, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

Hi Juliancolton! The nomination has one support from Dabomb87, but nothing else happened for the last 4 days. Do you know about something that I could do to help it?--  LYKANTROP  11:51, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Almost there

We need 2 more awards completed (for a total of 3). I'm focusing on these.

It looks like the only things the country lists need before we can start are the administrative divisions (under their respective subheadings), and the government branches.

If you could work on the government branches, that would help a lot - hopefully I'll be done with the awards by the time you get done with these.

Scrollboxes at FAC

The scrollboxes are hard to read through: what's the point, and what's going to happen when 1) every FAC gets dozens of them that I have to scroll through and 2) then someone adds a comment or Support or Oppose declaration to the bottom of one that I miss? SandyGeorgia (Talk) 17:28, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

They're "safe" in terms of template limits ... the problem is when everyone starts using them, and the FACs become unintelligible and declarations go missing. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 18:50, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

Yes, there are some easier tasks you could work on (x = the country's name)...

In the sports section for each list, add:

In the same section, for those countries that don't yet have it, add:

And someone created a list for Angola from scratch in article space, so I moved our almost identical version of it to article space and merged the two. List of basic Angola topics isn't complete, and could use a general going over. Some data is missing, redlinks need to be blue-linked where possible, and it needs maps and pictures.

Washington State Route 339 GAR

Julian - A few questions

  • Footnotes - Per WP:REFPUNC, references go after punctuation except for dashes.
  • Prose - Can you be more specific?
  • When was the road constructed? Designated? - Its not really a road :p but the enacting of the route is listed in the history section.

--Admrb♉ltz (talk) 02:17, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

Its not a concrete road. Its a ferry route. Its not even in the WSDOT highway log. I was able to get a bit of history from a newspaper article on it, and from the WSF website, but roads in WA are not like ones in NY where the state has existed for hundreds of years. Yea, you are probably right that there is a lot of history on ferries into the area, and I will attempt to find some information on that. As far as the writing, you are right, I don't have the best writing skills, but I thought I did okay... If you wouldn't mind giving it a quick copyedit, it would be appreciated. Thanks, when the time comes I will have you look at Lairdsville Covered Bridge (once I have beefed it up as much as I can). I do not see how this can ever get to FA with the info I have been able to find so far. I do not know who built it, why it has some of the names it does, or much of any of the restorations. I do think I can get it to GA though, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:28, 14 September 2008 (UTC)

The U Andromedae and U And RFDs

Hi, I noticed you voted Delete in the RFD nomination of U Andromedae and U And. However I have noticed that the U Andromedae redirect was in the past deleted for exactly the same reason as this time round -- I have thus proposed it would be better to replace U Andromedae with a stub to prevent its re-creation. I've put up a proposed stub at Talk:U Andromedae/Temp. Icalanise (talk) 13:28, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

SIMBAD lists 23 papers that refer to the star, though most of these deal with samples of a class of objects (usually Mira variables) rather than to U Andromedae in particular, but at least they provide some basics - this is not a totally unknown star for which we only have coordinates. Given that this erroneous redirect has been created twice (the second time apparently by a bot), it's probably better to put something in to prevent it happening again. List of storms in the 2001 Atlantic hurricane season

Dear Juliancolton, I've expanded "List of storms in the 2001 Atlantic hurricane season" and added new references to it. Can we make it a Featured list? And good luck for your "Requests for adminship". :-) AdjustShift (talk) 09:01, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

Thanks. :-) AdjustShift (talk) 16:00, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

Twinkle

Dear Julian, I've to ask something about Twinkle. I installed Twinkle. See: User:AdjustShift/monobook.js. When I viewed a user's contribs I saw a little "[rollback] [vandalism]" link. But now, they have disappeared. There is no "[rollback] [vandalism]" link. What happened? Can you explain me more about Twinkle? I also read Wikipedia:Twinkle/doc. But I'm still confused about Twinkle. AdjustShift (talk) 17:14, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

We've been "bluelinking" the Navy of x links in the basic topic country lists, by creating redirects for them, even for the countries that have no navy.

There's been a little controversy over the navy redirects for the landlocked countries (many of which have no navy), as you can see above. But it's all been worked out. Each country with no navy gets a redirect to wherever it is reported that it has no navy, or failing that, to its "military of" article.

The country lists are coming along slowing but surely. It shouldn't take too much longer before they will be complete enough to move into article space (!), but I can still use all the help I can get. (hint hint).

P.S.: in case you forgot, your tasks are:

Swamps

I am working on my own swamp article now. Dismal Swamp State Park Is this great swamp managed by the state or federal government? They usually have pretty good info. If it's been "engineered" by the Army Corps they should have some information too. I also look up local histories for the county and townships in my Pennsylvania articles. It would be counties and towns in New York. I will look and see what I can find. Thanks for asking and best of luck. Dincher (talk) 23:30, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

here is a list of what came up with a search. Hope it helps. But if you want history you might have to dig deep to rootsweb or some similar provider. I have used these type sites for work in Lycoming and Tioga Counties in Pennsylvania. See Leonard Harrison State Parks reference section #'s 15 and 21 could lead you to similar work for the local New York counties. Dincher (talk) 23:37, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
I tried to check the "frogs" link you asked me to check. I am at "work" right now and my internet access is sometimes limited. Some things just won't work for me and unfortunately I can't check until I get home. It may be late tonight before I can check, but I'll let you know. Dincher (talk) 23:42, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

The Friends of the swamp seems fine to me. But I am not really a stickler for those sorts of details. There is lots of good info. I'd use it. --Dincher (talk) 03:00, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

Just FYI, the conclusion that has been reached at FTC is that List of storms in the 2002 Atlantic hurricane season will need to be included in the topic. Because it failed at FLC due to stability issues, it qualifies under featured topic criteria 3.c. to be audited. You will have to get a peer review done and address all issues that come up with that, then add the audited list to the topic. If you do that, the topic should pass. "Owner of the cabal"

Since all of my work is to avoid such accusations and perceptions by keeping FAC commentary on Wiki and transparent, can you explain why you think that's funny? And as a followup, were you previously aware of how much agida has been caused by IRC, for example, in the Giano-admin and ArbCom debacles? SandyGeorgia (Talk) 01:09, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

(ec) I'm sorry. I've been badgered all day because of this channel. I was simply trying to make life easier for people when I created the channel. As for that comment, I was trying to be light-hearted, as it appears everybody is tied up in knots over this situation. I never intended harm, nor did I intend it to be serious. I apologize. Yes, I was aware of that. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 01:11, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
No problem; thanks, Julian. If I had known that you set it up from the beginning, I could have just inquired directly to you if you were aware of all of this and all of the issues that could ensue. I know you meant well. Best, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 01:14, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
Also, thanks for the revert. That account smells like a sock to me... –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 01:18, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
Are you watching it? I won't have time, and can't do anything anyway since I'm not an admin. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 01:28, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
I'll keep an eye on it. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 01:31, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
I see someone else is on it, too, so unwatching now. All the best, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 01:32, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
Alright. Again, I sincerely apologize for that comment I made. Cheers, –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 01:34, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

No hard feelings?

Hi Julian, I want to apologize if I came across as badgering on the IRC discussion. I have very strong feelings about transparency in the WP processes, and that sometimes makes my tongue sharper than it should be. Anyway, I can remember when I was very involved in IRC, and I can see how this could seem like a good idea and a fun new way to participate. I do believe that you started the channel in good faith, and I did not think that you (or anyone else in particular) would be abusive. The fear was always what could happen later. Thank you for making an effort to understand our objections. Karanacs (talk) 01:35, 25 September 2008 (UTC) (PS I also got the joke referenced above, but cabal joking doesn't usually go over well with FAC regulars.) Karanacs (talk) 01:35, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

That's fine; I should have definitely put more thought into it before creating the channel, and it was rather inconsiderate of me to not bring it up on a talk page before doing so. I've created a number of IRC channels, and I suppose I didn't think this one would cause trouble. I also apologize if I became too defending of the channel.
And as for the Cabal bit, TINC, so I didn't think it would be offensive. :-) Cheers, –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 01:41, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

Your vote on my RfA

Hi there, I noticed you changed your vote to "neutral" because of "per answers to the questions". I would really like to know why you decided to do so, i.e. what exact question and what exact answer to it prompted you to do so. But as I do not want to influence you or anyone reading this, I wanted to ask you to tell me this after my RfA has been closed (no matter with what outcome). I'd appreciate if you could do so next week as I really value your opinion and I wish you good luck with your RfA (although you don't need it :-). Regards SoWhy 12:46, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
