Help

Heya, Sureshmaran (talk · contribs) is adding a lot of spam to various articles like Sengunthar, Mudaliar, etc. I engaged him in discussion and proved him wrong at least 3 times. I believe he also uses aliases and alternate accounts like Pallavacholasengunthar (talk · contribs) and Chola_and_sengunthars (talk · contribs). Also, he spawns duplicate articles like Chola and sengunthars (a dupe of Sengunthar). Recently, he deleted a whole section of the Mudaliar article [1]. Can you warn him or give the article some kind of protection? If you cannot address these issues please direct me to the appropriate authorities who can help alleviate my concerns?

Cheers, ShivNarayanan (talk) 04:41, 13 December 2008 (UTC)

OK, I have had a good look at the situation and I can see the problems. However, I don't think that direct action by me is appropriate at the moment. The way forward is to place templated warnings for clear infractions of policy, and you are best placed to action this. The basic warnings, and guidance on their use, can be found at WP:Vandalism. Further templates, including some suitable for spam, can be found here. With regard to Chola and sengunthars, if you are certain that the content duplicates that at Sengunthar, then the way forward is to simply redirect the page to Sengunthar. In order to deal with the possible sockpuppetry then you should report the situation at Wikipedia:Suspected sock puppets. If you are unhappy with these suggestions then you can get a second opinion at WP:AN. TerriersFan (talk) 19:48, 13 December 2008 (UTC)
Heya, Thank you for the help. I have filed the sockpuppetry case [2]. Please review the case and give your opinion too. Cheers ShivNarayanan (talk) 06:11, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

My recent afd's

Hi, I am a fairly new editor and I guess I had misconceptions of what goes to afd and not. Your comments on all mine are 'not the place for merge'. Where can I find such a place? I only added academic colleges of universities which in themselves are notable while the larger university IS. I was just following practices at WP:N and WP:UNI. 16x9 (talk) 15:31, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

Merges are editorial matters. The way forward is to tag the source and destination pages and produce a place for discussion. Guidance can be obtained at WP:MERGE. TerriersFan (talk) 18:23, 24 December 2008 (UTC)
I don't want to sound like I want to rush things but I have seen some merge "discussions" (or lack there of) go for week/months... Does a AfD not produce somewhat of that same discussion or is there a place to discuss mergers in more broad manner? I will start using merge in the future I am still getting my feet wet, but recovering from getting bitten lately. Thanks 16x9 (talk) 02:00, 25 December 2008 (UTC)

Your AFD comments

I saw some of your recent afd comments in which you said that afd is not the place to request mergers. That's all nice and well, but you might like that add that things that aren't independently notable can be suitable encyclopedic content in the context of a larger article (thus supporting a merge). - Mgm|(talk) 23:44, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

I think his or her point was that the articles in question shouldn't be put up at AfD, but instead should have merger discussions on the talk pages. Basically saying that articles that are not independently notable, should be merged and not deleted ie. AfD is not the place to discuss mergers. ChildofMidnight (talk) 02:18, 25 December 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for finding the articles and reformatting those without. How are you determining when to add a college that doesn't specialize in osteopathic medicine? --Ronz (talk) 21:03, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

If the institution awards a recognised osteopathic qualification then it should be listed. I haven't checked whether this is the case with all the non-specialised colleges so there may be scope for some pruning. TerriersFan (talk) 21:24, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

Banksia Park International High School

I would wager that this article is going to survive AfD with flying colors! Pointiness in Launceston - help request

Hi, TF
I stumbled across Riverside High School (Launceston) AfD and made a few edits before you tidied them (for which, my sincere thanks), and added your ref. The whole thing looks very pointy to me. An article has been tagged, then post facto, reasons for the tag have have had to been found. In my opinion, the majority these are simply casuistry.
The Tasmanian secondary education system is unusual in Australia in that most government "high schools" are in fact grade 7-10, and the highest level of secondary schooling is grade 11-12 "Senior secondary colleges." The deletionists are, of course, correct in their assertion that (a) any high school is not automatically notable, and (b) as 7-10 schools are not the highest level of secondary schools, they fail notability criteria unless they are notable in and of themselves. Were this to applied with any kind of rigorous consistency, most Tasmanian 7-10 state schools (and most non-state 7-10 schools) should be speedied, and all of the Tasmanian Senior Colleges should have their notability scrutinised.
I have contributed to the AfD, but consensus will and must prevail. If the consensus results in a delete...
I seek your advice - as an Admin and a member of WikiProject Schools - about where to go from here. Your help and guidance sincerely appreciated!
--Shirt58 (talk) 10:20, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

I hope you don't mind me butting in here, but the current WP:SPEEDY criteria exempt schools from A7/lack of any statement of notability. There is a discussion on the matter at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Schools/Criteria for Speedy Deletion A7 but it seems to be going stale at the moment. How Australian 7-10 schools have fared in AFDs would be valuable input to that discussion. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs)/(e-mail) 14:36, 14 January 2009 (UTC)
The terms 'automatically notable' and 'inherently notable' are loaded and cause some editors to apoplectic fits. Consequently, they are best avoided. However, public high schools are invariably kept because there is general acceptance, though not unanimity, that sufficient sources can always be found. It should be noted that reliable sources can be documents from the local library; they don't need to be on Google. The fact that this school educates to Grade 10 is sufficient, in my view, to class it as a high school. Tasmania is not unique in this respect; many high schools in the UK also only educate to age 16, the equivalent of Grade 10, and for many students is their highest level of education. As a BTW the notability tag should be removed if the page is kept. I am not sure how well this answers your question so please feel free to ask me supplementaries :-) TerriersFan (talk) 03:13, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

More about Launceston High School

I'm in agreement with you that high schools are inherently notable, and you usually do a great job in defending those articles when they're nominated; indeed, I give you the credit for articulating the arguments that, in 2007, gave the high schools inherent notability treatment on Wikipedia. For that reason, I'll have to say that I am surprised if you believe that this Australian 7th to 10th grade school is similar to an American high school. To a lesser extent than the U.S. and Britain, the U.S. and Australia are still separated by a common language. What they refer to as a "college" is what we call a "high school" -- their colleges serve the function of being the school district's highest level of education and confers what we call a "high school diploma", but what they refer to as the "certificate of education". Anyway, I hope you won't take offense (or offence) at my making this observation. Best wishes. Mandsford (talk) 02:06, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of Bignay, Valenzuela City

A tag has been placed on Bignay, Valenzuela City, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

No context

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as an appropriate article, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is appropriate, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Johnlemartirao (talk) 14:47, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

When content on an article is not sourced and not notable why merge it to another unsourced non notable academic college article? In my view I would be endorsing condoning the content of the first page if I merged it. thoughts? 16x9 (talk) 05:30, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

If you are concerned about the notability of the target then that is a matter that should be dealt with separately. Thank you very much for your contributions to the Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys. Most of the information you have added is fantastic and you have preserved the page on Wikipedia for the future, for which I am personally grateful, having added much information to it in the past. However, the information you have added about Ofsted is wrong, as I think on a couple of occasions throughout the page, you have referred to the wrong school. I corrected the address for the school a couple of days ago after having seen a slightly inaccurate address, and obviously this must have been the address of the school you have on occasion incorrectly referred to. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jackarias (talkcontribs) 12:59, 4 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi, schools are not inherently notable. However, they are exempt from deletion under CSD A7 - this is stated on the template. The accepted practice is that elementary schools are merged into their school district (or locality outside the US) unless they have a specific claim to notability, for example as a Blue Ribbon school. High schools are considered notable because sources are invariably available that meet WP:ORG. HTH. TerriersFan (talk) 17:20, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

I deleted your page because there was no indication that she has any importance or significance. Existing, and having a website, is not enough to support a page; notability must also be shown. Guidance is given at WP:BIO. Unless you can provide sources to indicate that she is notable I am, regretfully, not prepared to restore the page. If you wish to pursue it further then you have the right to appeal at WP:DRV. TerriersFan (talk) 23:09, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

Suttons Spring Wood

Just curious, since when are places automatically "controversial" when it comes to their deletion? Sutton Spring Wood clearly and uncontroversially presented no claim to notability and as such does not belong on Wikipedia. It's a small neighborhood of five houses that claims no historical or literary significance. While the guidelines for notability of a place have not actually been adopted yet (and probably won't be for quite some time), there's no way in a million years that this article would pass any eventually adopted form of them. No secondary sources, nothing more than five houses, and no significance to anyone. It even claims itself to not be known to those who live close by. If that's the case, why would anyone ever go to Wikipedia looking for it? Anywho, since you disagreed with it being prod-able I've taken it to AfD. If you want to share your two cents, it's here. KhalfaniKhaldun 04:21, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

There is currently a school of thought that all defined geographic areas are notable. I don't have a position on this general proposition or this specific page. However, Prods are for non-controversial deletions and, in my view, places should go straight to AfD. TerriersFan (talk) 19:58, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

So anyway, thanks again, and if you don't mind I will make that small edit. Luckyles (talk) 11:18, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi, I have removed the head's title - we don't generally include title's on Wikipedia. The criteria for inclusion of organisations is meeting WP:ORG. However, high schools are generally considered notable. The key requirement for content is that it should be reliably sourced and objective not promotional. Please don't give up on Wikipedia; there are plenty of editors, like me, who want to see the content expanded and I should be happy to help you, as required. I have a quarrelsome past with this user on a completely unrelated matter and would rather not open another venue. I have concerns about some of the specific wordings of the proposal and frankly think that WP:N is best suited to cover the notability issues but agree with the suggestions of redirecting to districts and localities when insufficient sources exist for an article. I probably agree with marking it an essay that represents some viewpoints but I have not given it a great deal of thought. Somebody should give it some thought though. DoubleBlue (talk) 21:06, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for alerting me to this. In fact, any editor can write an essay so whether this is converted into an essay or the same text is used as an essay with a slightly different title actually doesn't matter. Either way, the page reflects what happens in practice in AfDs so I thnk that it is a valid subject for an essay. TerriersFan (talk) 01:40, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
Do you think it's valid to refer to the essay in a deletion discussion? I think it's a good guideline to have when the subject is specifically the notability of a given school. Radiopathy •talk• 01:57, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
Essays, of course, have no policy status. However, in an AfD they act as an excellent shorthand to summarise the views of a commentating editor to avoid having to spell out established positions in detail. TerriersFan (talk) 02:58, 12 April 2009 (UTC)

I would therefore appreciate if you either undeleted it outright or moved it with all revisions to my user space. In either case I will attempt to make it acceptable according to our usual standards. __meco (talk) 19:56, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

Montford Middle School

Thanks for spending some time with the Montford Middle School redirect. I'm not unhappy as long as the circular link is fixed. I have a hunch that someone will tidy it up, though, to make it all look like the list that that portion of the article basically is, and the issue will re-surface. Then, again, maybe not. I'll cross my fingers. Tim Ross (talk) 17:28, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

elementary schools in AFD

In hindsight, do you think I should have been bold and merged most/all of those schools instead? I tend to figure the AFD is necessary if it has more than a dozen words, but that could just be me. You seem to understand the wpschools world fairly well, which is why I'm wondering your thoughts. tedder (talk) 01:14, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

The short answer is yes. When such schools are prodded, rather than AfD'd, then I tend to boldly merge most of them. The consensus with primary/middle schools is to merge them to the school district (North America) or the lowest available locality page (elsewhere). The exception is when there is a reasonable claim to notability. For example, Blue Ribbon schools (US), Ofsted Grade 1 (UK). The problem with Canadian schools is that they tend to have a poor web profile. Consequently, where there is a reasonable claim to notability (as in my view with three of your noms) my approach is that they should be kept to allow local sources to be found. (Though, in theory, a deleted article can be recreated in practice it rarely happens). HTH. TerriersFan (talk) 15:02, 6 May 2009 (UTC)
Thanks- and good to know. I'll boldly merge next time instead. tedder (talk) 15:23, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

Proposed Change

Hi TerriersFan – I posted a Proposed Change on the Glen Raven, Inc. page. I have not received a response from anyone and I am interested in getting your feedback since it appears you are the editor who placed the COI on the article. Please advise on my talk page. Thank you for your help! Knh1314 (talk) 17:43, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

Hello again, I just wanted to follow up with you and see if you have any suggestions on how I can get changes made to the Glen Raven, Inc. page so the COI can be removed. Thank you again for your help! Knh1314 (talk) 15:46, 18 May 2009 (UTC)
Thank you for this timely reminder. Unfortunately, the redraft still suffers from the original problem which is that it lacks reliable, secondary sources to stand up the various claims: "The first flag implanted on the moon in 1969 was made with Glen Raven fabric.", "Glen Raven produced parachute fabrics throughout World War II,", "Glen Raven was one of the first companies to adopt synthetic fibers ...", etc - see WP:PSTS and WP:RS. What is being looked for are independent sources. The redraft also suffers from peacock phrases such as "Glen Raven has been a leader in the textiles industry throughout its history.", "Sunbrella fabrics today are a leader for awnings ...", "a manufacturer of ... high performance fabrics." which cannot be included unless sourced independently. Perhaps you might like to source up a section and get back to me for a view? HTH. TerriersFan (talk) 18:51, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

License tagging for File:Madeleine McCann age progression image.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Madeleine McCann age progression image.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

Schools in Worcestershire

Hi Terriersfan, you seem to be an expert on schools so I need some advice; i'm currently reviewing all the school articles for our new Wikipedia:WikiProject Worcestershire. Although I am an inclusionist rather than a deletionist, but there are some articles about UK Middle schools that have clearly been posted by probably in good faith by anonymous adolescents. They clearly do not meet Wiki standards but with a bit of work they could be improved. However I am loath to do that if they will be AfDd later because they are Middle schools and lack notability. Should I AfD them straight away?. Any advice welcome.--Kudpung (talk) 08:40, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

As you allude, secondary schools are considered notable but primary and middle schools are not. The exception is where the school has had an Ofsted grade 1 overall assessment so in each case the Ofsted reports need to be checked. If the middle school doesn't meet this criterion then the normal practice is to merge the key facts into the lowest level locality article. This certainly doesn't require an AfD; simply boldly carry out the merge. So that the new target can be found it would also be helpful if you linked from List of schools in Worcestershire. Please get back to me if you want more guidance or have a query on the notability of a specific school. TerriersFan (talk) 17:23, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

Standard section headers

Hm, can you give me the example you were looking at, please? Doesn't look like the MoS has changed (although it has a number of problems), maybe I need to bring it up with the AWB team, but if it was one of the fixes to Category:Pages with missing references list then it's probably something of mine. Rich Farmbrough, 00:50, 10 August 2009 (UTC).

Ah sorry, yes that is correct. "See also" refers to other WP articles, WP:layout states that the internal links come before the external - which includes refernces, bibliography etc,. Though it waxes a little over-lyrical on reasons for "External links" to be last. Rich Farmbrough, 01:02, 10 August 2009 (UTC).

The John Fisher School

Hi TerriersFan. I often see your work on school articles; you do a great job. I have a request for you, if you could find the time and inclination. The John Fisher School has been suffering an edit war for a long time now. It should be readily apparent what the problem is; there is some discussion on the talk page, and there's been some on my talk page. I've tried to intervene a bit, but I feel that what the article really needs is the addition of one of your excellent Ofsted report summaries. In fact anything you could do for this article, especially with a view to stopping the edit war, would be appreciated. Thanks. -- zzuuzz (talk) 12:00, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

Concord High School (Sydney)

I think Concord High School (Sydney) is a hoax. A Google search returns no mentions about this Australian school. The best I could find was this (RateMyTeachers), which could have been a made-up entry. Should I bring this article to AfD? Cunard (talk) 01:02, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

AfD nomination of Fuzhou No. 3 Middle School

An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is Fuzhou No. 3 Middle School. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Fuzhou No. 3 Middle School. Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 01:35, 1 September 2009 (UTC)

Cass City Public Schools

The article on the Cass City Public Schools seems to include several schools that are not part of the district and a bunch of schools that I can't find anywhere. The article for Novesta-Grant Elementary describes a school for which I can find no evidence that it even exists. The Catholic schools in the community are not listed on the school district's website, and in the U.S. would not be part of the school district. The total numbers for the school don't match the stats from NCES. Can you take a look at this and reply on my talk page? Alansohn (talk) 02:40, 6 September 2009 (UTC)

Your comments at the AfD

Did not assume good faith. I have to say I resent your words. There is no possibility for a merge in my opinion given the inappropriate nature of the content in the subject article. I don't even think the content is notable enough for a specific mention in the parent article. I don't even think you phrased your comment very politely, I'm afraid. I have explained my decision on the deletion page. Kind regards, SGGH ping! 09:44, 27 December 2009 (UTC)

Sorry, but 'good faith' doesn't come into it. I said "The nominator has failed to address the merge possibility as required by WP:BEFORE.". This is a factual statement. Had I said "The nominator has failed to consider a merge", a different matter, then there may be a AGF issue. There is nothing in the nomination that argues the case against a merge. You may have considered a merge, but not recorded your deliberations, but without this being included in your statement we have no way of knowing. The way forward is simply to address the question in the form "I considered a merge into the parent article but rejected it because ...". That also has the advantage of moving the debate forward, and may well convince others to your viewpoint. TerriersFan (talk) 17:04, 27 December 2009 (UTC)

Hi there. I have undone your edit to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of office bearers of the National Union of Students of Australia where you struck my recommendation. I have not changed my recommendation, and you striking it without any explanation on the page itself makes it look like I've changed my vote, even though I haven't. Furthermore, since AfDs are not a vote, I can't see the problem in me, as the nominator, making my position clear and kicking off the discussion. The article Clayton Mark has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No reliable sources of information found for this individual (Find sources: web · news · books · scholar · images). No indication of notability found. Unsourced for over 3 years

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist.
