Wikipedia and copyright
editHello Jwilkes73, and welcome to Wikipedia. All or some of your addition(s) to Josiah Tattnall (Senator) has had to be removed, as it appears to have added copyrighted material without permission from the copyright holder. While we appreciate your contributing to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from your sources to avoid copyright or plagiarism issues here.
- You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
- Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. (There is a college-level introduction to paraphrase, with examples, hosted by the Online Writing Lab of Purdue.) Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
- Our primary policy on using copyrighted content is Wikipedia:Copyrights. You may also want to review Wikipedia:Copy-paste.
- If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. However, there are steps that must be taken to verify that license before you do. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
- In very rare cases (that is, for sources that are public domain or compatibly licensed), it may be possible to include greater portions of a source text. However, please seek help at the help desk before adding such content to the article. 99.9% of sources may not be added in this way, so it is necessary to seek confirmation first. If you do confirm that a source is public domain or compatibly licensed, you will still need to provide full attribution; see Wikipedia:Plagiarism for the steps you need to follow.
- Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you can, but please follow the steps in Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia.
It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 20:55, 14 May 2016 (UTC)

Paraphrasing
editYou added "His career in service to the state of Georgia continued after his term as governor. In June 1782, he was appointed deputy purveyor. He served as a representative in the Georgia House of Representatives. He was a member of the convention that ratified the U.S. Constitution in 1788. In 1789 he served in the convention that rewrote Georgia's constitution. He became the first president of the Georgia senate, serving in that office from 1790 to 1791. He joined with Abraham Baldwin, another Yale graduate, in working for the creation of Franklin College, which would become known as the University of Georgia."
Ref says "Brownson's career in public service continued after his term as governor. In June 1782 he was appointed deputy purveyor for southern hospitals. In the 1780s he served as a representative in the Georgia House of Assembly. He was a member of the Georgia convention that ratified the U.S. Constitution in 1788. In 1789 he served in the convention that rewrote Georgia's constitution. He became the first president of the new Georgia senate and served in that office from 1790 to 1791. He joined with Abraham Baldwin, another Yale graduate, in working for the creation of a state-supported institution of higher education, which would become known as the University of Georgia."

editHello, I'm Oshwah. I noticed that you recently removed some content from Alexander H. Stephens with this edit, without adequately explaining why. In the future, it would be helpful to others if you described your changes to Wikipedia with an edit summary. If this was a mistake, don't worry, the removed content has been restored. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:05, 1 June 2016 (UTC)

I have read the guide, and was in the process of editing the article when I was blocked.
Decline reason:
This doesn't yet show you understand our policies around copyright. For example, it seems to imply that you think it is acceptable to copy and paste so long as you eventually fix it. Please explain your understanding of wikipedia copyright and specifically explain how your edits will be different when we unblock you. Thanks! Yamla (talk) 21:15, 6 June 2016 (UTC)
If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

Request reason:
I was not implying that copying and pasting was acceptable as long as I fix it. My intention was that I was using the encyclopedia article to create original content. As you can see, I use the save feature frequently, and I was simply saving the page as I edited. I am a librarian, and I do understand copyright. My edits in the future will not include encyclopedia articles, and I won't save pages as frequently. Thanks for the clarification.
Accept reason:

- All I need is an assurance that you will always paraphrase extensively going forwards and never use the copy and paste button. It is always best to read the source and type out your summary of it. Copy and pasting and then paraphrasing is often not sufficient. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 16:06, 7 June 2016 (UTC)
I agree that I will type the summary before posting to Wikipedia. My intention is to help students who use Wikipedia as an academic source realize that Wikipedia points them to the source where they can in turn make their own paraphrase. I often see entire papers that are copied and pasted directly from Wikipedia.Jwilkes73 (talk) 19:54, 7 June 2016 (UTC)

I'd love to read them, especially the one about the Mississippian copper plate that was found there. I've never heard of it before and would love to see it to see how it compares to the others. References
editThank you for contributing to Wikipedia. Remember that when adding content about health, please only use high-quality reliable sources as references. We typically use review articles, major textbooks and position statements of national or international organizations (There are several kinds of sources that discuss health: here is how the community classifies them and uses them). WP:MEDHOW walks you through editing step by step. A list of resources to help edit health content can be found here. The edit box has a built-in citation tool to easily format references based on the PMID or ISBN. We also provide style advice about the structure and content of medicine-related encyclopedia articles. The welcome page is another good place to learn about editing the encyclopedia. If you have any questions, please feel free to drop me a note. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 16:12, 13 November 2017 (UTC)

editHi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Georgia Music Hall of Fame, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Robert Shaw (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Composer vs text
editHi Jwilkes73, you're doing some great work out there on hymn articles! Just a note about {{Infobox musical composition}}: the parameter composer
, when used, is meant for the person who wrote the music. The parameter text
is for the author (or other source, if no author is known). I do agree with the way you're using melody
for the composer when it comes to hymns, so you might consider just leaving out composer
. Best, Ibadibam (talk) 22:35, 16 May 2018 (UTC)

editPlease be careful with your edits to this page (and other similar ones). Per the introductory text, the list includes *all* FCC-licensed radio stations – that includes all AM, FM, and low-power FM stations, regardless of whether or not they simply repeat another station's programming. The corporate entity shown is the licensee, not the owner or the brand name – where an article for the owner itself exists, it can be linked to, but as a piped link that shows the licensee name. Adding photos
editYou would do well to learn how to properly size and position the photos that you're adding. And to be more concise with your captions. Don't just put them underneath the infobox at full size, think about where they might be best placed in the article with reference to the other images. Look at where I moved your picture on the Monitor article for an example on how to do that.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 19:51, 11 February 2020 (UTC)
In the future, please add attribution when copying from public domain sources: simply add the template {{PD-notice}}
after your citation. I have done so for the above article (in the image caption). Please do this in the future so that our readers will be aware that you copied the prose rather than wrote it yourself, and that it's okay to copy verbatim. Thanks, — Diannaa (talk) 21:29, 12 February 2020 (UTC)
