Hi Kierano, and welcome to Wikipedia.
Thankyou for finding the time to sign up and contribute to our little project. If you're in doubt about anything, you might want to check out some of these pages:
- Welcome, newcomers - a general introduction, and a good starting point
- The help centre and FAQs
- The Manual of Style - a guide to the community's writing conventions
It's also a good idea to sign the new user log and add a little about yourself.
When contributing to a talk page, you can sign your name by typing four tildes after your comments, like this: ~~~~. (Just so you know, some people won't pay attention to unsigned comments).
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask me at my talk page, or at the Help desk or Village Pump.
Above all, make sure you be bold when contributing, and have fun!

Welcome Kierano,
Good to have someone from KZN. Why don't you add your name at Wikipedia:Wikipedians/South Africa. See you around.--Jcw69 06:28, 24 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Hi, I noticed that you edited the article on Wyrd. I just wanted to let you know that I did a major over-haul on the page, and that you might want to have a look at it in order to continue its improvement.

GRider
Regarding GRider's 'Socratic' VfD nominations and the ensuing reactions by voters, please read and comment on Wikipedia:Requests for comment/GRider2. Thanks. Radiant_* 10:29, Mar 22, 2005 (UTC)
- However, please note that 'notability' is used very often on VfD as a reason for nominating or voting, so that cannot really be held against GRider. I believe it is a de facto criterion even if it's not strictly written in policy (and if I were to put on my lawyer hat, I could make a reasonable case for it by quoting policy). Radiant_* 11:42, Mar 22, 2005 (UTC)
- I've taken your remarks under the header of 'users certifying the basis of the dispute' and moved them to the 'discussion' section. Am I correct to interpret that this does indeed mean that you certify the basis of the dispute? If not please edit the RfC page accordingly. Radiant_* 12:14, Mar 22, 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks. You take it correctly. If anything, my views are somewhat more extreme (I'll strive for NPOV): The whole issue of notability is new to me: In fact, the whole Vote for Deletion process is something I only discovered when GRider nominated a page I was working on (and in a way which, to me, smacked of discrimination against people practicing body modification). However, as I have mentioned, that is not the subject of the RfC. I do agree with your reasons for posting it. I'm still looking for the best way to express them myself. However, count me in in acknowledging that there is a problem with GRider's behaviour.

Zulu
Thanks for your recent additions at Zulu. Just one remark: it's perfectly OK (in fact, it's desirable) for the lead section to effectively provide a summary of major points of the article. I'm not going to mess with this; I would restore the old lead, but it looks like some of your removals might be corrections. Anyway, you might want to follow up on this. -- Jmabel | Talk 05:03, Apr 13, 2005 (UTC)

Maritzburg!
Hey there, I'm just happy to see someone from PMB. I studied at UKZN from August to December 2004, and loved every minute of it. Thought I'd just say cheers. =) Elefuntboy 7 July 2005 19:00 (UTC)

WikiProject South African municipalities
Hi! I see you've been making a lot of edits relating to South African municipalities. I have just started WikiProject South African municipalities, and I was wondering if you would like to join and contribute? - htonl 19:59, 11 February 2006 (UTC)
- Funny, I was also thinking about a rambot-style census bot for South Africa. I'll see what I can find out about getting hold of programmatically-usable data. As to the map scripts, I'll put them up here as soon as I can, but they need a bit of cleaning up - they're a bit, uhh..., anachronistic. ;) Give me a day or two, and I'll have them all up. - htonl 20:51, 11 February 2006 (UTC)
Library of Earth and Sky
After reading all the comments on my talk page, I have decided to scrap the library and instead use simple alphabetised lists ("Animals of the Edge Chronicles" etc). Thank you for your healthy criticism. This being my first venture into Wiki, I kinda guessed I'd make glaringly obvious mistakes, but I intend to learn from them (:
P.S. Please feel free to delete all the library subsections, but could you wait until at least tomorrow to give me time to copy the info. Thanks!--Ninty 09:27, 13 February 2006 (UTC)
WikiProject: South African municipalities
Pages - its partially programatic. I have some asp code that generates the wiki markup which I cut and paste. I then edit anything that needs an obvious change. Graphs: cool. Do Share. I didn't know Python until a few minutes ago but am sure I can use it. If not no harm done. The only hassle is loading them up into the commons. Does wiki not have some graph type markup? --Waynedam 21:00, 24 April 2006 (UTC)
Arg I've been lazy on this for a while and haven't really been working with any database stuff for a while. If I can get as much of the data as possible
As far as I understand it we are going to essentially need to look into getting together two databases: 1) containing information on each of the municipalities - basically the info that appears in the info bar. If somebody draws up a bot that can plug the information into the articles or at least just spew the information into a plaintext file that sets it out how the infobox must look then the process of drawing up municipal articles can move along swiftly.
2) the information on the census information, it may be particularly useful to be in a possition to cite an estimated population for specific settlements based on the census division. However I think this particular matter is being looked at by the various compsci geeks of the world and it is far above my league at this point.
Obviously database 1 will get information from database 2.

Could you take a look at the first sentence in this section? It claims that Persians are descendants of some "Aryan tribes" migrating from Central Asia. Sounds like outdated racial theories to me. The same source (Britannica) says Persians are of mixed ancentry, but when I try to add this in people remove it. I don't think this is consistent with WP:NPOV. Could you take a look at this and leave a comment? Thanks, AucamanTalk 06:55, 2 May 2006 (UTC)

Volkstaat and Orania articles
Kierano, what WEASEL words did I add in? Please point them out? --Zaphnathpaaneah 14:01, 26 June 2006 (UTC)
Hi Kierano, I think you did a great job of clarifying the issues I have been having with the editing, and the generalizations. I think I need to discuss this issue of Weasel words with you in the Orania and Volkstaat articles. You gave two examples that I used, however, I fail to see how those examples are actually examples of weaseling. You mention that my responses are reactionary, and perhaps the two examples are of me countering bias, but being unable to articulate around or nullify the previous weaseling tactics. So in effect you see me "out-weaseling" the weasel? I see my comments in [1], [2]. to be not weasel tactics, but instead clarifications to counter act the weaseling tactics. For example, #4 was posted in order to prevent readers from being misled by the notion that Whites in S.A. lost their rights by the misleading (weaseling) comment in the "Lack of Political Power" section earlier which stated "The Afrikaners, who form a small minority group in South Africa (8% of total population 2001 est.), handed over their political power in South Africa during the 1994 democratic elections. " People will be weaseled into thinking they gave up their rights as they read further with all the implied talk of Afrikaaner rights being compromised. So in effect, what I am getting at is that the reactionary Afrikaaner contributions are very subtly crafted to lull the reader into assuming that in S. Africa the Whites are being unfairly diminished in some way. --Zaphnathpaaneah 02:04, 27 June 2006 (UTC)
A weasel word is a word that is intended to, or has the effect of, softening the force of a potentially loaded or otherwise controversial statement, or avoids forming a clear position on a particular issue. for me, I am only trying to UNDO that.
I ask for your input out of honest sincerity, because I think you are the first person that I have come across in here who has properly put the issues in perspective. How can I more effectively dissassemble weaseling tactics by reactionaries in topics of race? So I am listening to what you wrote and will try the ideas out. --Zaphnathpaaneah 02:04, 27 June 2006 (UTC)
Just curious, HAVE you also spoke with the agitators on the other side? Like Ron? I mean, i appreciate your input here, but i fear that the "voice of reason" is only "given" to those on one side, while the other side is left believing they are reasonable. Shall Ron and his comments also be given no response from you? --68.60.55.162 17:04, 27 June 2006 (UTC)
I regards to doing the varied things to counteract right-wing contributions that are unmeritious and without citation... How about instead of all of those things you suggested (which are constructive suggestions), instead lets just remove the statements all together and require that they present facts and citations, just in the same manner my statements (and other non-right wing contributors) are removed for the lack of the same quality. If you can feel compelled to remove left-wing comments, why not right-wing comments? I am constantly edited out and told to refer, but when a right-wing comment is done in the same manner, I am required to respond to it (instead of requiring them to remove it and come back). That's not fair, thats the POV I see prevalaent in Wikipedia, apologies, but that's just what I see. --Zaphnathpaaneah 17:18, 27 June 2006 (UTC)
Kierano, I want you to know I hold you in high respect, and I do not have any gripe. I just want to have "free speech for me" as well as "free speech for theem".--Zaphnathpaaneah 12:44, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
- Kierano, thank you for your hard work on the Volkstaat and Orania articles. Your methodology is excellent for the furtherance of an encyclopaedic article, complete with references. Wikipedia is not a forum for free speech, it is an information tool for unbiased facts. It would be good to free the articles of "weasel words" and biased POV, in order for Wikipedia's goal to be achieved. I will try to help as much as I can. -Gemsbok1 09:35, 1 July 2006 (UTC)
Sending you the SA stats data
I haven't checked the data I got from Stats SA thoroughly – and I can't really, not from here – but I can tell you that it can't be too outdated: Plettenberg Bay appears as Bitou. You asked for the data; I'll be happy to send it. I see I can't e-mail you through Wiki, but please e-mail me and then I'll have your address so I can send you the data.
You can't make it language-agnostic; language names, party names, the neighbours field, the very article title are language-dependent. We'll make it in English with an easy way of converting to other languages. (For instance, I have in my mind the algorithm to convert the twelve language fields to my preferred afrikaans 91%, inglês 5%, xhosa 2%, sesotho 2% format. See? Language-dependent.)
My data has no districts; just metro and local municipalities.
By the way, how interesting that you are from PMB; I thought you were from the Cape. The reason for my interest in South Africa lies right there in Maritzburg - by the banks of the Duzi, to be more precise. [3] -- Tintazul msg 22:00, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
Small world indeed!
It is a small world! A Rocha works with DUCT all right, see the 2005 Annual Review (PDF) or Making the connection in South Africa in the latest international news. Which led me the the SA Municipalities project!

Weasel words - Volkstaat article
Kierano, will you please assist in identifying the weasel words for whom you put a tag on the Volkstaat page. We need to work to lift the tag as it impairs the value the article has for users, even though the standard of the article has been raised quite substantially since it's inception. --Gemsbok1 08:08, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

I sorry, but no. The pro-spoiler side of this debate has gone far too deep into the land of incivility and personal attacks for me to be able to mediate in good faith. My position is simple, and has been explained at sufficient length that I feel no need to articulate it yet again for the benefit of a bunch of people who have, by this point, made it abundantly clear that they prefer edit wars to rational discourse. Misleading edit summary
Your most recent edit summary on Wikipedia: Spoiler is rather misleading - it suggests that the edit Tony reverted just added the date. It did not. Please be careful not to make misleading edit summaries, as they are often considered disruptive. Phil Sandifer 00:10, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
- I reviewed the edit in question (this one, right?), and I don't see it as "misleading." I see it as critizing Phil's action, and perhaps not assuming good faith on Phil's part. Phil's warning to you is probably a reaction to your comment "Phil's weasel-ish 'in the past'...." River
1. I am trying. At present I started with the rivers in Romania, where I worked for some time, to see how a system can be developed to be generalized for other countries.
2. I am willing to help, just let me know what you intend to do.
3. The main problem with rivers is that the general information is relatively poor. It is therefore important to have decent mapt which present the rivers. Most contemporary maps concentrate on roads and administrative divisions and neglect rivers. The maps should be as detailed as possible showing also small tributaries not only the big rivers.
4. It would be useful to find out if there are any government agencies in charge of waters and if they have an inventory of the rivers. This could be a good start to find out what is available.
5. I consider a sytematic approach is required. Just finding a river and writing an article about it does not fill the gap.
6. Let's keep in touch to decide how we go on further.

Again about rivers
Sorry for the delay. I went through the files zou suggested, but the various files just contain some data about different cross-sections. I was not able to finalize anything and it is for not having tried. Maybe there is a way to consolidate the various files in a single table, and find a way to link it to the maps. The maps show the network but not the names of the rivers. That is not very useful. I would like to make some progress and am therefore waiting for suggestions.Afil

Geobox 2
Hello, this message is sent to you because you've shown some interest in the Geobox templates in past. There is now a new version (aka Geobox 2) which supersedes all older Geoboxes (aka Geobox 1). The major difference is there are no feature specific templates (Settlement, River, Mountain range etc.) but just one master template which can handle all type of data. There are a couple of new features and many new fields making the template much more versatile so now it can be used for virtually any geography related feature without the need to create a specific template.
The switch to Geoboxes 2.0 is highly recommended as the new template has a much more effective code, which renders faster than the old one (with much smaller pre-expand size, it can be one third to one fourth of the pre-expand size of Geoboxes 1). To convert aa page from Geobox 1 to Geobox 2, there are two ways:
- By changing the template header:
{{Geobox Settlement
becomes{{Geobox|Settlement
Although some field names have been changed in order to be unified, the old names are accepted too. For any settlement Geobox use {{Geobox|Settlement and set the settlement type (city, borough, town, village) in category field. Calling e.g. {{Geobox|City will work as well but it's not the recommended way (from technical reasons). - By a semi-automated tool which reorders the field names in the Geobox 2 style and also renames the few changed field names.
There are several unresolved issues at the Geobox talk page, please add your comments and of course any other ideas you might come with as well as bug reports. – Caroig (talk) 09:38, 23 September 2007 (UTC)

re: Battle of Waterloo FAC
Thanks for your message. I'd love to copy-edit this and will try to make the time for it. I reckon it will take about 10-15 hours so it will have to be done piecemeal, spread over a couple of weeks. I have some of the sources but would prefer to concentrate on style as delving for references is very time-consuming. Easiest and best is to do it section by section with people who know the sources checking that nothing significant has been up on the cutting room floor. The lead should be done last, just before nomination so that it reflects the final shape of the article. Does this suit you? --ROGER DAVIES talk 22:20, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for editing that opening paragraph on Doctor Steel, making it more objective. I went by afterward and removed the last sentence of that paragraph, which I didn't really like since I first saw it. - (e.g. The Army of Toy Soldiers is the street team, but the plans for creating a "Utopian Playground" are clearly part of the fiction). For an encyclopaedia, it's important to make the distinction. True (although there are quite a few of the Army with whom that distinction is blurred, lol). Which is why I put "Utopian Playground" in quotation marks in the article, where once it was not. It's part of his fictional agenda and part of what the Army puts out there on the street, so it's relevant... so not really sure how else to put it other than setting it off with quotes, but any other ideas are welcome. :) --Jonnybgoode44 (talk) 20:11, 5 September 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for the heads-up about the images. I've got absolutely no clue how copyright works, therefore I've forwarded your concerns to Doctor Steel; I'm sure he has lawyers that know all about that sort of thing and can provide the necessary... whatever. :) I'll let you know as soon as I hear back from him (probably a day or so). --Jonnybgoode44 (talk) 13:29, 6 September 2009 (UTC)

- Dear Jonny,
- Though I am unable to invest the legal time and funds to move this particular cause forward at this time, I look forward to being able to do so in the future.
- In the meantime, should they require an e-mail from me or a written letter I will be happy to do so.
- Sincerely,
- ~Dr. Phineas Waldolf Steel
- Not sure if this helps any...???
- I noted that I had put "used by permission of Dr. Steel" and his email address on the pictures I used... --Jonnybgoode44 (talk) 17:48, 7 September 2009 (UTC)
- Ok, all this legalese really confuses me. I just got an email from Sgt. Kato (who started and runs the fan website, and one of Dr. Steel's personal friends) and said we were free to use any of the images on this page. So all we need to do is post it on this site and select that CC-BY-SA as the licensing? Am I right?
- I did find a good pic from a fan that I could use showing the Toy Soldiers in uniform, that could be added to the page right above the propaganda poster... --Jonnybgoode44 (talk) 23:19, 7 September 2009 (UTC)
Received the following from the Doctor today:
Dear Jonny,

That should suffice? --Jonnybgoode44 (talk) 01:44, 9 September 2009 (UTC)

Stellenbosch to bid for Wikimania 2012!
Hi Kierano!
The nascent South African Wikimedia chapter has decided to bid to host Wikimania in Stellenbosch, South Africa in 2012. This would be the first Wikimania in South Africa, and would be a great advertisement for our country. Please take a look at meta:Wikimania_2012/Bids/Stellenbosch. If you can add to the discussion, please do. If you feel that you are able to do anything to help, please join the Wikimedia South Africa mailing list and let us know. Even simple messages of support are valued!

On 23 February 2011, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Donald Van Slyke, which you created or substantially expanded. UKZN edits
Hi, I've just started to flesh out the University of KwaZulu-Natal page and add some references, though it's the first time I've edited a page and I'm not sure if all the citations and writing style are ok. I'm doing this because many international/exchange students going to UKZN complain about the lack of online information for the university and I have to agree. By the way, nice to see someone else from Pietermaritzburg interested in Bioinformatics. I plan to specialise in it soon at the University of Edinburgh ;) MartinMorrison (talk) 17:44, 26 August 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks! I will add some innocent stuff now like departments, student life, sporting etc ;-) I'll try recruit some more nerds over at the geology and comp sci departments to come in and edit in more information on their departments and lecturers. Will also add information on student exchanges and stuff. I'll try dig up some information on 2006 strike. MartinMorrison (talk) 20:23, 26 August 2011 (UTC)
- Cool, I'll do that now, I'm just not sure how to make a completely new page? I need to do that for the departments also. MartinMorrison (talk) 20:37, 26 August 2011 (UTC)
- Alright thanks, I will change my style but I keep getting timeouts with every edit/preview so going to take a break now ... thanks alot for the help! MartinMorrison (talk) 21:57, 26 August 2011 (UTC)
- Fair enough, I'll be more careful from now on. Doesn't seem like UKZN are interested in getting their wikipedia page up to scratch anyway. I'm just going to contribute to the controversies page because I think it's the kind of information you're not going to find on the UKZN website.. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MartinMorrison (talk • contribs) 23:47, 26 August 2011 (UTC)

Inviting you to WikiAfrica Incubator!
Hey Kierano,
WikiAfrica invites you to support the Africa Incubator.
WikiAfrica is pleased to invite you as a self-declared African Wikipedian to evaluate the Africa Incubator. WikiAfrica has created the Africa Incubator to support and assist new authors, as they create their first articles and learn the ins and outs of contributing to Wikipedia.
The Africa Incubator is a ‘soft landing’ for new authors to develop articles that relate to Africa. It assists them in becoming compliant and knowledgeable of Wikipedia principles and rules. Based within the Wikipedia framework, the Africa Incubator is fully interactive and enables feedback, assistance and forums.
This is where we need your help! For the Africa Incubator to be successful, it needs the intervention, interaction and experience of Incubator Mentors. We are looking for a pool of active experienced Wikipedians to consistently participate in ’owning’ the Africa Incubator. Incubator Mentors will assist new comers through the editing process. They will also help test and expand the Africa Incubator, and will play a vital role in encouraging newcomers to be Wikipedians for life
Please visit WikiAfrica Incubator to give us your honest feedback and evaluation. WikiAfrica is a ground-breaking project that is designed to Africanise Wikipedia by generating and expanding 30,000 articles over two years. Find out more about this project here WikiAfrica. Hydronymy
Hallo, I am interested in hydronymy as it looks the language of prehistoric Europe is reflected therein. I left a message on the wikiproject rivers talkpage, just looking for editors with similar interests to exchange information. I have discovered the so called old european hydronymy is not limited to Europe but has many correspondences in Iran, India and furhter away so I think this disproves the current scholarly etymological interpretations. Presently I am trying to research Bengal and Burma. Thanks for reading.Aldrasto11 (talk) 11:16, 3 June 2013 (UTC)

This is an automated message from MadmanBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Flow cytometry bioinformatics, and it appears to be a substantial copy of http://topicpages.ploscompbiol.org/wiki/Flow_cytometry_bioinformatics.
It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. The article will be reviewed to determine if there are any copyright issues.
If substantial content is duplicated and it is not public domain or available under a compatible license, it will be deleted. Hi Kierano, just a note re the DYK nomination for Emil Rebeanu in case you don't have it on your watchlist and pings don't work on the template page! The reviewer had left a note about the refs and I've just tried loading them as well. I didn't want to just re-instate the AGF tick in case we're not addressing your query, so could you pop back and have another look at it when you get the chance, please? Thanks! I read at Template:Did you know nominations/Robert Drayson that you promoted this nomination on the 19th, and Talk:Robert Drayson says it appeared on the main page the same day, but I haven't yet had a DYK notice about it. Could you please fix that?
I can't think why you changed the Alt hook which no one had approved. My suggestion was that the school did not need to be mentioned. The US has "high schools", and for all I know South Africa may, too, but it's a rare term in the British Isles and isn't used of Stowe. Moonraker (talk) 14:41, 23 December 2013 (UTC)

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on Sea buckthorn oil. Users are expected to collaborate with others, to avoid editing disruptively, and to try to reach a consensus rather than repeatedly undoing other users' edits once it is known that there is a disagreement.
Please be particularly aware that Wikipedia's policy on edit warring states:
- Edit warring is disruptive regardless of how many reverts you have made.
- Do not edit war even if you believe you are right.
If you find yourself in an editing dispute, use the article's talk page to discuss controversial changes; work towards a version that represents consensus among editors. You can post a request for help at an appropriate noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases it may be appropriate to request temporary page protection. If you engage in an edit war, you may be blocked from editing. Alexbrn (talk) 20:13, 27 July 2017 (UTC)
