Poesybeat_Arts_Initiative

Hey D.S.[1] ... nosing around at our Starkey/Parkin changer's contributions after he got a name ([1]), I found the subject article (and its close sibling poesybeat)... First I started fixing it, because that's what I do. But then.... Alexa has no rank for the website associated and googling for the term found a lot of m:walled garden and not much else useful. Smells like neologism. AfD fodder? What do you think? ++Lar: t/c 01:03, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

PS I just got LOVE PSYCHEDELICO THE GREATEST HITS[2] from Japan.

  1. ^ Deletionist Scum
  2. ^ Their first album... snicker

1. Careful with that Lar, really. It doesn't offend or bother me, and I know you're friendly with the other people named and not just me, but an outside observer might think it uncivil (or worse).

2. Sheep on Drugs. Debut album, Greatest Hits, 1993. Close but no cigar! :P

Will look at said articles now... --kingboyk 01:10, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

I'd certainly nom, yes, but then I am "DS" :-) Some usage on Google, not a lot. Neologism. Seems to be quite keen to promote poesybeat.org; will issue a spam template. --kingboyk 01:16, 12 March 2006 (UTC) No I won't, because it's the work of multiple people.

Good point about DS, I redacted it on the "... for dummies" AfD and will try to keep it in mind (but it's hard, because it's FUNNY!). The article isn't vanispamlinkcruft per se but it strikes me as an attempt to give notability to something that isn't notable yet. Do you want to AfD it or shall I? ++Lar: t/c

I'd prefer it if you did the honours as I'm creating some album stubs for The Shamen at the moment. --kingboyk 01:24, 12 March 2006 (UTC)
Done. Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Poesybeat_Arts_Initiative. Probably should do the other one, Poesybeat too. ++Lar: t/c 02:23, 12 March 2006 (UTC)
They're so alike you can join them into one debate. See User:Kingboyk/Deletiontools for template. --kingboyk 02:26, 12 March 2006 (UTC)
Done... but those tools didn't help much I don't think... I just used {{afd1}} on the second page but pointing to the same AfD subpage. Maybe I wasn't folllowing you though. No worries, it's done. ++Lar: t/c 02:35, 12 March 2006 (UTC)
"for subsequent articles in a bundled deletion, use {{subst:afd1|OriginalPageName}}", but the end text result is exactly the same, so it really doesn't matter! --kingboyk 04:55, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

I just nominated the portal I created for Northern Ireland. Please have a look here to vote if you've got the time. If you think the portal doesn't deserve featured status, please don't vote yet, and give me any suggestions to improve it instead! Ta muchly. --Mal 05:57, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

Right, so that'll be a Strong Oppose before even looking then :P --kingboyk 05:59, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

lol :P Take a look at G in the category.. frig it .. look here. It needs your status template though - I didn't know which one you'd use. --Mal 06:57, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

Well I agree with Lar's assessment of merge (it was me who tagged it in the first place ;)) so I'm not sure I need a whole extra line to myself :) --kingboyk 06:59, 12 March 2006 (UTC)
Oops - sorry. I thought you'd been having trouble with that or something. Mea culpa. --Mal 07:03, 12 March 2006 (UTC)
I edited it to further merge things after Mal did and squashed the classification itself together too, just to see if I could. That was tricky. To get a rowspan, you have to leave a pipe out you'd think you would need because the template brings one along... ++Lar: t/c

Your vandal counter

OK, this should probably be in WP:LAME, since it's pretty sad that I'm even writing on your talk page about this, but anyway, your vandal counter SHOULD be 12, as when you upped it after Tawker, and subsequently I reverted, you only upped it once, though both Tawker and I reverted vandalism. This is quite possibly the most trivial topic ever, but whatever. --Rory096/24.46.201.42 06:24, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

lol, ok. I'm wondering whether it's a bad idea to have a vandal counter at all, it might just be vandal bait in itself :) --kingboyk 06:34, 12 March 2006 (UTC)
Prolly 1/5 of user:Titoxd's edits to his user pages are updating his counter... There are a number of things I could say at this point, but they'd all jinx me. ++Lar: t/c 06:45, 12 March 2006 (UTC)
Vandal counters appear to violate WP:BEANS. Stifle 18:44, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

Gastrich vandal

OK, the targetting of pages and the edit summaries makes it quite clear it's a Gastrich sock or impersonator. However as a new admin I'm not comfortable with using my powers up to the level of indefinite block just yet, so I've banned for 1 week. That should be about 6 days and 20 hours longer than is needed for JzG or similar to come online and deal with it :) --kingboyk 08:19, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

Re: The Future Party

Hello! Thanks for the heads up. I'm still getting used to the admin processes in my first week on the job, so it's great to have these things picked out for me, as you have seen in my earlier messages! Regards,  (aeropagitica)  10:15, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

I am currently sitting in Cheltenham, although I am not from these here parts.  (aeropagitica)  13:05, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

Non-admins closing out AfDs

Should I not have closed down the Beverly Polcyn AfD even though, as the nom, I withdrew it? I only closed it because I didn't want it to float for 7 days until an admin checked today's deletion page, in a week. tv316 11:35, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

lol, I actually hadn't noticed you had closed it. I was making a general point that it's OK to do in certain, limited circumstances. Your closure seems fine to me, nobody wanted delete and you withdrew it. Closing it just saved us admins some work. --kingboyk 11:44, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

CSD's

Cowboy, eh?

Thanks for dropping by my talk page. I'm gonna have to exercise more discretion in the future then, chap. Crzrussian 13:27, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

No worries. We could do with some more speedy criteria really, including non notable companies and websites, but as for now, well, we don't. --kingboyk 13:31, 12 March 2006 (UTC)
Here's Johnny! Crzrussian 13:40, 12 March 2006 (UTC)
Bit of a dig in the nomination? Never mind, I only refused to delete it because of the previous admin, so it's a dig at him ;) --kingboyk 13:43, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Old Man (AoM)

It didn't happen exactly like that... I didn't know it had been relisted when I closed it (had I known, I wouldn't have closed it). I had a slightly stale copy of the old AfD log... occasionally admins do step on eachother's toes like that (unfortately it's relatively easy to do). I've gone ahead and reversed my delete, which is kind of irregular, but I shouldn't have closed it in the first place. --W.marsh 16:00, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

No worries. Thanks for letting me know. Looks like it could be a merge, could be a delete :) --kingboyk 04:01, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

Templates

Hi Stifle, I've seen you put onto a user's talk page a long notice starting: "I notice that you tagged this page for speedy deletion, with the reason..." (i.e. a CSD decline). Are you using a template to do that, and if so where is it?

If yes, please let me know on my talk page, if no then no reply is needed :-) Thanks! Not sure if I congratulated you on your promotion or not but if I didn't, congratulations - you deserve it. --kingboyk 09:22, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

This is, for the time being, manually typed, as there are simply too many variables. I may try to come up with something in the near future, and if I do, I'll let you know. Stifle 18:43, 12 March 2006 (UTC)
Template:Sdd has now been created. Use {{subst:sdd|article name|reason they gave for speedy deletion}} ~~~~ . Stifle 16:41, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

Your talk page design

You really have a great design here for your talk page. I wanted to ask you if I could please copy it and put it on my talk page. I'm shopping around for design styles for my user pages (and if you've ever seen my user page, you know why), and out of all the styles I've come across so far, I really like your's the most. I don't know if you made it yourself or you stole it from someone else, so I thought I would ask you first. Thanks. tv316 19:54, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

I think User:Phaedriel set it up for him, and ya, it's spiffy. ++Lar: t/c 00:46, 13 March 2006 (UTC)
Yes indeed. It's all freely available under the GFDL of course but a note to Phaedrial saying you're borrowing it would probably be best :) --kingboyk 03:59, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

Female sex offenders

Hi Stephen, I noticed you had tagged a couple of these new female sex offenders pages and expressed a concern that they do not meet notibility standards. I nominated one Heidi Choat for deletion and thought I'd let you know. I'm mainly concerned about the lack of proper referencing in these article and the fact they've only been based on single newspaper articles, but I also don't think they meet notability for living people. I'm not lobbying for votes, I just thought I should let you know since you'd tagged the other pages. Sarah Ewart (Talk) 23:26, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up. I'm of the opinion that these people are mostly not notable as individuals. Let's go read the article again and see where the AFD is up to. --kingboyk 04:04, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

NI Portal: pics not displaying?

Check out the Northern Ireland portal for me and let me know if you can see Van Morrison and George Best's pics, would you? I'm getting the satellite pic and others, but those two are just blank, and right-clicking shows that "Show picture" is greyed out. Probably just a(nother) problem with my PC, so if you can see the pics, no worries. --Mal 05:53, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

Firefox yes, IE no. --kingboyk 06:09, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

Odd. I can't see any evidence of tampering. And like you say - FF shows it up fine apparently, while IE does not. --Mal 14:18, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

Hey mate. I might have messed your page up when either Wiki or IE went bikkies on me (when I tried to comment here Wiki threw me up a blank talk page for you). Sorry for the inconvenience if I did - I just threw the head up a went off and did something else. I wonder if you know anyone who'd know why those pics aren't displaying on the NI Portal..? Cheers. --Mal 08:45, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

It was wiki I think. Same thing happened to me last time the database went crazy a few days ago. I saved a section and it saved it as the entire page. I'm a bit tired now, but I'll have a look at that portal problem for you asap. In the meantime, User:Lar seems to be a bit of a wizard. (That link might be red). --kingboyk 09:10, 14 March 2006 (UTC)
(I reverted this page when the Wiki wonked out (see Wikipedia:Village pump (technical) for some discussion, there was a DB problem, but Brion says it's sorted now) on Mal to put it back) I don't think I have any special wizard-y powers! But here's what I saw. I run Win XP SP2. In Firefox 1.5 (IBM version) the pictures were visible. In IE 6.0.2900.2180 (ya that's backlevel, I don't use IE much except for testing and for a few IBM apps that don't run in FF) looking at the portal page the two pictures (van and george) are NOT visible. However they are clickable, and clicking on places where they should be takes you to the image page where they are visible. Refreshes or purges have no effect. I use popups and if I just hold my cursor over the place where the images should be popups work, that is I get a popup with the image info in it just as if they were visible. Portals use a lot of transclusion which I don't pretend to understand. But I went to Portal:Northern Ireland/Selected article, which is where the Van pic and text come from, and the pic displays there fine. Ditto for Portal:Northern Ireland/Selected biography which is where the George pic comes from, that pic displays THERE fine too. It's naff all right, but I don't know why. Sorry mate. I think this is one for the Wikipedia:Village pump (technical) gang. Hope this detail was helpful. ++Lar: t/c 11:52, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

Thanks Lar - that's exactly the situation for me also. I'm going to the tech peeps to see if they have any idea. Cheers. :) --Mal 13:08, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

I also use Popups, which might therefore be the explanation. Thanks Lar! --kingboyk 00:54, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

Yeah - all three of us use popups. What I don't understand is why those three pictures (there's a pic of Samson and Goliath (Cranes) that doesn't work on the page also) don't work and the others do. They're all jpegs. I reported it to BugZilla anyway. --Mal 03:07, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

HI back :)

Hi Kingboyk...

Sorry I didn't reply earlier, I'll admit that in my newbie-ness I assumed that was some sort of automated welcome -- didn't for the life of me realise that a) someone would pick up on me or that b) someone would think to drop me a line and some helpful instructions :)

As for your comment re: my pages - I'm really just setting them up for now but I intend to go back and add a whole lot of content when I have all 51 girls up (big job when you're new :P) - and I'm fitting it in around university as well.

You mention pictures... I went to upload a picture but was turned off by the Images found on websites or with Google's image search should generally not be uploaded to Wikipedia. message and by the "summary" box - can you offer me any help in this direction?

Thanks again, CarlyPalmer 19:31, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

I'll reply on her page. --kingboyk 01:47, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

Knox

Why did you delete the Knox (flash artist) page (and the Robert Benfer page) even though the virdict was nomination withdrawn? Why do you think that Knox is not important or good enough for wikipedia?

sorry forgot to put my signature --JoeBlowfromKokomo 00:38, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

Why do you think that Knox is not important or good enough for wikipedia?
I just enforced an earlier decision from the community that he's not sufficiently notable and that his article should be deleted. There shouldn't be rush. Assuming the world doesn't end tommorow (there's a WP link for that but I can't remember what it is), wait a few months and see if his profile rises. If it does, ask if you can have the page unprotected and start a new article. --kingboyk 01:36, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

i understand, but for the page that i created it chosen not to be deleted, keeping in mind the previous deletions. --JoeBlowfromKokomo 01:38, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

Not really mate. You talked the nominator into withdrawing it. He didn't know an article had previously been deleted, nor did I when I closed the debate. From what I can see, your man Knox is well on the way towards notability. Let it lie for a while, edit some other articles, do some constructive work. If when you come back to the issue you can show that he's more notable, maybe when he's won another award or got another DVD out which is demonstrably selling units - and people can see you're an established user who they should listen to, you might find things change. I'd be grateful if we could leave it there for now, as I have other messages to attend to. --kingboyk 01:43, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

Continuation of my own "Pictures" thread :P

Hi again... thought we'd best split from that previous thread - getting too acrimonious.

Now, you're welcome to a) disagree and/or b) delete the links but hear me out first (trying to be rational)

  • When I view/read an encyclopedia (be it Wiki, or any other, online or in book form) I generally intend it to give me a wide summary of the available facts. I hope that this broad overview of the subject will lead me to further points of reference and lines of investigation. In my mind, the brilliance of Wiki is that it provides those links in an easily-clickable format (i.e. taking out much of the legwork of research.
  • Often those invited to write journal/encyclodpaedia articles (and I'm not talking about Wiki here) are experts in their fields who have already published information. Often this published material is referenced in the article. Relating this to Wiki - what difference does it make that someone who creates an article on a specific subject links to a page that expands on the Wikipedia article (especially considering that Wikipedia may in some cases greater contraints re copyrights etc and the amount of room available than a related website?

Anyway, you're probably waiting for me to shut up about it but that's my two cents anyway :P CarlyPalmer 04:48, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

Acrimonious?! I don't think so. Gosh, you really are new aren't you? :)
I don't make the rules, I only enforce them. I'm not planning to do anything about the links in your articles so the best bet would be to quietly drop the subject. But, if somebody else raises it later, don't say I didn't warn you. OK? It's not a big deal at the moment as I can see that you're here to make articles and not to spam. --kingboyk 04:50, 14 March 2006 (UTC)
Lol yep! New through and through. Thanks for all the help you've given and I'll definitely leave this subject alone now :P CarlyPalmer 04:54, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

Beatles facial hair

Stephen, I just thought I would annoy you with your own suggestion! :) John had the best full beard (although somewhat thick), then Paul (his moustache was wimpy), then George (woefully incomplete in spots) then Ringo (whose beard appears to reside mostly on his neck). Quick unrelated question: Do you have an interest in current Apple Records operations? ZincOrbie 21:09, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

Ringo's beardedness accounts for his decline in popularity if you ask me! :) Current Apple operations? Sure, I'm interested - what are they? --kingboyk 00:52, 15 March 2006 (UTC)
It's only third-hand from me, but the label (and its president) are apparently crushing income possibilities for Badfinger through indifference and obstinance; traits presumably acquired due to unnecessary public-relations savvy when handling The Beatles' catalogue. I told Dan Matovina about our mutual work on the Badfinger article, and I don't believe he would be surprised if you contacted him (crimson3@mindspring.com). Matovina is also the U.S. representative for the Pete Ham and Tom Evans estates. I detect some desire to get word out on Apple's resistant attitude, with a hope that publicity might sway their dealings. In his position, he has to play close to the vest. ZincOrbie 03:01, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Obidike

No I've made an ambiguous comment. They were very polite and didn't comment on me at all- I just meant that two distinct users disagreed with my decision to speedy tag and then re-tag on the talk page. Seeing as there was a protest from a third party, I moved it to AfD, that's all. May I retract the warning please because I think this may leave an unfair blot on their reputation? Thnkyou for your hard work.Blnguyen | Have your say!!! 03:14, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

Well, on the article talk page he cast doubt on your intentions and suggested that you wanted it deleted because of your race. That's a personal attack in my book. However, it's your call. Best if I remove it. --kingboyk 03:15, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

Something you might have an opinion on...

Wikipedia talk:Blocking policy#Proposal for policy change on shared IPs .. dunno if you have an opinion either way, but I thought I'd put a suggestion out there anyway. Meant to tell you about this earlier. Back to work on the Beatles for me! :) --Mal 07:07, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

Yeah I know, cos I have the admin alert page on watch. Not too fussed either way to be honest. Personally I'd probably favour banning anon accounts from editing at all. --kingboyk 07:10, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

The Beatles discography

Kingboyk wrote in "The Beatles discography" log:

> I prefer the central align.

Using alignment of page elements to lead the eye is a basic principle of graphic design. [2] [3] [4] You may not know this if you are not a graphic designer.

The central align makes readability considerably more difficult without visible table cell borders. There isn't a clear indication of where the description begins for the relevant album image. This problem is exacerbated by the fact that the spacing between table cells is little more than the spacing between lines. All of the descriptions for the albums run together.[5] The alignment of the album images to the top of the cell gives a visual clue to the reader of where the description begins. Without that alignment the user must expend effort to hunt for the beginning of the description.

Given this would you please reconsider the vertical alignment?

> I planned to keep the style="border: 1px solid lightgrey;" change, but
> that doesn't work if the browser window is made small. It borders the

I will make a replacement image then. I could not find a way to specify a border for an image in the mediawiki syntax.

For replies, please respond here or via email.

Lar? Mal? Any thoughts? All I can say is "what I like" and I preferred it before. Discussion moved to Talk:The Beatles discography. --kingboyk 03:40, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
Set up a straw poll there. ++Lar: t/c 04:00, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

Colin Hanton

Hi - I notice you moved the redlink "Colin Hanton" from WP:Beatles with the comment "Move Colin Hanton to redlink list in discussion". Problem is, there isn't a redlink list in the discussion. What happened? Grutness...wha? 07:51, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

Sorry, it's in Wikipedia talk:WikiProject The Beatles/Article Classification. Mal is building a redlink list there and we haven't got to the Quarrymen yet. You'll notice that I queried whether we need individual articles on each member of that group, and said maybe we didn't. Please don't hold me to that as I might be changing my mind! :) I've found a few articles now which could go into a new Category:The Quarrymen. Considering the circumstances in which we first met, is Beatles "pre history" a special subject of yours? If it is, perhaps you'd be just the person to advise on and adopt this subcategory? --kingboyk 07:54, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
not really... though some of that's academic now since I've written a stub on Colin Hanton! No, if anything, it's my SO Alice who's the authority on the "pre-Beatles Beatles" (and she's not a wikipedian). I'm just a huge fan and working at least from a musician's viewpoint, and it was purely chance that I noticed there wasn't an article on Colin. Grutness...wha? 08:05, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
Cool. Well, I think I shall be bold and create that subcategory then. --kingboyk 08:08, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

217.199.54.130

Can you tell if 217.199.54.130 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log) is a shared IP mate? Cos if its not, I'd have the eejit long-term blocked right away, considering his 'contributions' to wiki. His latest 'contribution' was to replace the whole of the Northern Ireland article with "fu". --Mal 09:59, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

There's no way to tell for sure from whois, as far as I know. That address resolves to Norway and if I had to hazard a guess I'd say it's not shared. They hit England to which makes me mad!! hehe. Let me know if they strike again and I'll give them a block. --kingboyk 10:04, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

So I see. Two different IPs, who both seem to have a problem with England's history for some reason. Go figure, as they say in the States! --Mal 11:10, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

WTF? Did you see the last two England vandalism attempts? As of now, I am extremely of the opinion that people who do not register an account with Wiki should NOT be allowed to edit existing articles. EoS. --Mal 12:27, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

SLF

Is there any chance you could have a look at the Stiff Little Fingers article and make recommendations for its improvement? I put a expand tag on it a few days ago.. specifically, I think, because I felt the intro was far too short. User:Jcuk came back to me about that, and I made some recommendations that I could think of. He seems keen to get the article up to scratch, and I'd be happy to leave him to it because, although I like SLF's music, I don't know much about them. I thought your experience might come in handy here.

OK - that's my convoluted way of saying I think yer great! All right? lol --Mal 11:02, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

Reads like a fan piece. I'll speedy delete it :P --kingboyk 11:06, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

lmao! --Mal 11:11, 16 March 2006 (UTC) (PS. BTW - I was thinking of giving you my email addy if you could be arsed having it.. any way to do that without dickheads getting hold of it?)

Seriously, it needs some attention to the tone of the piece. It does read like a (good) fanzine/music mag article. Email? Via "email this user" but don't bother for now, as I don't check my email at the moment! If we ever need to chat off here I'm on the usual messengers. In fact you can probably get my email address by following links on my user page anywayz :) --kingboyk 11:42, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

Don't delete what you don't understand

Please revert the Trouton-Rankine post, there is a discussion ongoing on this subjectAti3414 18:04, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Alvin Luk

Hi mate, I'd recommend not listing articles you have tagged for speedy deletion at AFD until an admin has had a chance to come by and have a look at your speedy request. Alvin Luk is an obvious speedy delete, so by creating an AFD too you've made more work for both of us (but especially me as I have to now close the AFD). Not a complaint, just a little bit of advice :) No reply needed. --kingboyk 05:42, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

Hi! I appreciate your feedback, but I'm confused. I have never knowingly tagged/listed anything for speedy delete, instead always using the AFD process. I'm really interested in not repeating my error. However, I've just tested it in the sandbox, and the macro correctly placed an afd tag into the article, not speedy delete. Zen611 00:25, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
I'll reply on his talk page. --kingboyk 08:16, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

Eddie Irvine

Just saw your edit change. I was thinking that the second sentence, "He was born Edmund Irvine on the 10th of November, 1965, in Newtownards, and grew up in Conlig, County Down, Northern Ireland.", would imply that he was Northern Irish. I was thinking of looking up someone like Jenson Button to see what pattern is followed there - he is British, but also English. --Mal 08:19, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

Aye, but as you know there's more sensitivity regarding Northern Ireland. I'd stick with British but it could be clarified if anyone objects. As an aside, wasn't there a funny story about how he was originally registered as an Irish driver, because the registration fees were cheaper in the Republic? Sounds like Edmund anyway! :) --kingboyk 08:34, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
I'm currently without TV, and it seems I missed race one! There was a time when I wouldn't miss a second of grand prix. Off to read the race report now! --kingboyk 09:38, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
I missed the first race too!! lol Never worry though - second race is this weekend. :)
As for Irvine, there may be sensitivity about it, but he competed in F1 as a British driver. I believe it was his choice.. though having said that, in one race (I forget which one) they screwed up and played the Republic's anthem for him and flew the Tricolour. He said he wasn't bothered too much about it.
Regarding competing for the Republic.. some sports people from NI do sometimes compete as Irish (implied Republic of Ireland) because the competition isn't as tough (usually simply because of the much lower population), and therefore get a name for themselves easier. --Mal 10:22, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
I have a feeling that mess up was due to what I described, him racing under an Irish licence/club registration in his early days cos it was cheaper??
Next race may be this weekend but I still have no TV. (I have a digital TV card but no antenna, no licence, and I don't think I have the drivers with me either. Maybe I'll go to the pub and watch it). --kingboyk 10:41, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
Too bad neither of us saw the race. 2006 Bahrain Grand Prix is a bit sub-par (poor narrative, non-native English). --kingboyk 12:04, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
Did you check out the Pitpass coverage? --Mal 12:37, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
What's that? --kingboyk 12:39, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

Pitpass :) --Mal 12:59, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

Couple of questions. Did you catch the Maylasian race? Did you find Pitpass useful? :) --Mal 08:38, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
No, didn't see it. Pitpass was OK, I'll visit again definitely so thanks for the link. I have to say though that the most readable reports I found were at BBC Sport. I think I understand the new qualifying format now too :) --kingboyk 08:42, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
Heh! Even people like DC don't fully understand it! Though I do think its a bit more exciting. One thing I remember people like DC and Irvine saying was that qualifying was more boring when they changed it because you didn't have the problem of encountering traffic on your flying lap. One bad aspect of it though is that not all drivers are going for the fastest possible time. --Mal 08:56, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Re : Terence's RFA

Thanks for the message. I've revised my comments. Yes I still do have strong confidence in his RfA, which is why I've decided to nominate him in the first place. If you have anything more to say, feel free to let me know on my talkpage. :) - Cheers, Mailer Diablo 09:37, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

Hey Steve. You did a strikethrough on the redlinks section, but the streets are still redlinked in The Beatles' London article. --Mal 12:57, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

Strike through is "out of project scope" or "debateable". If I remove a redlink, I just delete it from the list. No point keeping crappy ex-red-links listed is there? --kingboyk 13:00, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

S'up to you. I was thinking of keeping them as a record of what we've done.. and so that we don't attempt to go over the same articles again. I'm onto the albums now. --Mal 13:32, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

Hmm... Good point. But we have only one "strike" tool. I guess deleted links could go into another list, but I've zapped quite a few already. Whaddya think? And would you consult the list of previusly deleted links before readding them? One other thing, since the list has got quite large what say we move it from the talk page to a new project page?
Please, if there's any seriously dodgy ones please zap them on sight! --kingboyk 13:35, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
Well I'm still learning what you call seriously dodgy, by looking at the work you've been doing following the list. I think this has turned out to be a useful exercise.. and yes - I think you should move it to a separate page. Put a link on the talk page though maybe. --Mal 13:39, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
I've used a bit of editorial judgement on some I've zapped (i.e. not all were "seriously dodgy", but see my contribs history), and I check incoming links and sometimes Google. Yep, re the list and link. --kingboyk 13:44, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
Gimmie a shout when you've created the project page for the redlinks then, and I'll do some more. --Mal 13:46, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
Oh. I didn't realise I had volunteered! Righto! Just a moment. --kingboyk 13:54, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
Hehe. Sofixit..? :P ;) --Mal 13:58, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

Orr (surname) --> Orr?

You'd advise this?

I was thinking of doing it. I've moved the Orr page to Orr (Catch-22) and changed all the links via Whatlinkshere. Of course, my IE chose to hang half-way through! I might move over to FF tbh. Anyway - I'm going to remove the disambig tag from Orr (Catch-22) and put one in the Orr (surname) article.. then possibly move the Orr (surname) page to Orr. Your thoughts..? --Mal 13:36, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

I dunno about that. When you've had dealings regarding these pages were there any vocal editors who you think might disagree? I know there's some chat about it on your talk page but I don't have time to read it right now. If you think it's non controversial, let's do it, if not we'd best put Orr (disambiguation) into the Orr slot for now, and you can put up another rename proposal! --kingboyk 14:06, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

Sarah Jayne Vercoe

I wanted to let you know that I removed the notability tag from Sarah Jayne Vercoe. I understand why you raised the issue. I considered it myself when I put the unref tag on more than a month ago and asked the creator for sources. To let you know, I'm pretty conservative about the treatment of non-famous people and strictly follow WP:BLP. This is my thinking with this case. Fame can come from an event. That is what happened here. She's very well know now in her country for this crime. She raised public awareness about female offenders and will be remembered differently forever more. Also she caused politicians to scramble around and change regulations. I think it is impossible to know what the public will want to know 100 years from now. We need to think a little more short-term. In 10 years, I think it is quite possible that I would look in an encyclopedia for the names of female sexual offenders that caused public opinion and laws to change. regards, --FloNight talk 14:13, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

OK. Thanks very much for letting me know. --kingboyk 14:16, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

Image:Applecorps.jpg

There's a wikiproject dealing with untagged images. In order to keep the image from continually reappearing on that list, it needs a tag. The overpopulation of the related categories is an interesting problem and might be worth raising on the project's talk page. SteinbDJ 17:26, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

I see. Lol! Interesting problem indeed. Well, I'll just let it sit in double categories for now then :) Thanks for the prompt reply. --kingboyk 17:28, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

Carter and XL Recordings

It was wikepedia that wouldnt allow XL Recordings not me...originally I changed it to XL Recordings but the system wouldnt allow it. Carter - The Unstoppable Sex Machine is the way they are categorized in the Guinness Book of Hit Singles and Albums from page 96, edition 18 - only USM was in their cat number never had a listing as Carter USM...Page 213 of THECOMPLETE BOOK OF THE BRITISH CHARTS SINGLES AND ALBUMS by Neil Warwick, Jon Kutner and Tony Brown has the act down as...Carter - The Unstoppable Sex Machine again no mention that the act is shortened to Carter USM.

However page 375 of Guinness for Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark it states Group is often known as OMD, so in this case it would be justifiedXljesus 17:29, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

Replying on his talk page. --kingboyk 17:35, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

also if you look in the edit history for XL I says its (not XL records it is XL Recordings) with the capital...so dont blame me blame the system!!!

That's because I've fixed it :) --kingboyk 17:35, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

Gary Numan is released via Cooking Vinyl

or are the people on this site so pedantic that it has to be credited as Motal Records GARY NUMAN ALBUM AT HMV!!!Xljesus 20:47, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

I've no idea what you're talking about. --kingboyk 20:48, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
YES YOU DO!!!!! You changed Cooking Vinyl so Gary Numans name wasnto in the list went i had put it in...it's in the history log so you can not say not —This unsigned comment was added by Xljesus (talkcontribs) .
Please don't shout, and learn some manners! That must have been a mistake. It seems I was fixing the mess you made with the Carter USM move and accidentally reverted your other changes to Cooking Vinyl. Sorry about that. It'll take you a minute to add them back in, which is a lot less than the time I've spent undoing your dodgy page moves! Now, unless you're here to ask me a question please let me get on with what I'm doing (which is writing about music and categorising articles). --kingboyk 20:55, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

Thats ok!!! I thought you were going to delete everything I have done...which has been many hours and still a back log of Record Mirrors to get through!

P.S. Do you know who GIMPO was?

No, I'm not gonna delete everything you do, of course not. Only dodgy page moves or bad edits, the same as I would do with anyone else. Gimpo? Yep, he has an article, but I'll have to search for it because I can't remember his real name right now... Here we go: Gimpo! --kingboyk 21:01, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
PS from me - if you're adding in facts from old music papers (which is good!) it would be great if you could cite your source. It makes an article much better if readers know the info came from a published source. Have a look at Wikipedia:Citing sources. If you're putting any citations into KLF articles I've been using this scheme, so it would be best to stick with the same scheme: The <ref> element -- kingboyk 12:37, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
One last thing the KLF infobite is not from ANY MAGAZINE it is from the actual record!!!! And anyway i wanted to know who Gimpo was because it's his signature that is scribbed over my white label promo copy of America:What Time Is Love!!!
Dont think I'm gonna be bothered...the last few weeks on this site has just been an annoyance!!! think i will keep all my back issues and Guinness Rockapeadia because even though i have run out of space they are less a pain —This unsigned comment was added by Xljesus (talkcontribs) .
You misunderstand me. I mean, if you find any new KLF info you want to add, just cite it as I described. There's nothing wromg with what you've added to KLF articles before and your contributions are most welcome. We don't have many rules here and we welcome people to be bold but you've been running around like a bull in china shop, perhaps just a little too bold that's all! :) Chill out, get on with your editing, I'm not gonna bother you unless I see you doing strange page moves without asking other editors first. Alright?
Gimpo is a mate of Bill Drummond's, an army veteran. He filmed them burning a million quid and is mentioned a lot in Drummond/Zodiac Mindwarp's book Bad Wisdom. He's not particularly famous but he's very well known in KLF circles. Have a read of Alan Goodrick (Gimpo). --kingboyk 14:38, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

Junior Giscombe, Norman Giscombe, Datsun/Nissan and Joey Negro

re: The Joey Negro page moves...

you wrote....

Now, look. I've spent the last hour or more trailing behind you clearing up your mess. You're moving pages left right and centre to bizarre names which don't reflect the way we do things round here. I am going to ask you not to move any page until you have discussed it on the talk page first, or you have checked me with my on talk page. Dave Lee / Joey Negro for example is not how we do things. For a start, you have superflous spaces between the slash and the words. Second, it goes against our naming conventions (which I want you to read).

and put

This policy in a nutshell: Generally, article naming should give priority to what the majority of English speakers would most easily recognize, with a reasonable minimum of ambiguity, while at the same time making linking to those articles easy and second nature.

Another way to summarize the overall principle of Wikipedia's naming conventions: Names of Wikipedia articles should be optimized for readers over editors; and for a general audience over specialists. That would be Joey Negro then, wouldn't it?! :) --kingboyk 19:36, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

However somehow I think there is one rule for one and one rule for another...depending on whether or not you are in the clique...

Kingboyk may i bring these two examples to your notice Example number 1:

Norman Giscombe From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search Norman Giscombe was born on 10 November 1961 in England. Known simply as Junior, he scored a UK Top 10 hit with “Mama Used To Say”. (Norman Giscombe is the uncle of UK comedian Richard Blackwood who later covered this song in June 2000). His follow-up single, “Too Late” also made the Top 20 charts in the UK. After a period outside the charts, he made a brief return to the UK top 10 in 1987 when he sang a duet with Kim Wilde on “Another Step Closer To You”. He also became involved with the formation of Red Wedge in 1986 with Billy Bragg, Jimmy Somerville, and Paul Weller.

This article is completely at odds in what you are saying as most people would know Junior as Junior...

Om my 1982 Kodak Video Rock Attack Video his is on Track4 and track13 as Junior in the Guinness Book of Hit Singles Junior is used on the chartfor 8 hit singles including his top 10 hit with Kim Wilde then for his 3 MCA solo hits as Junior Giscombe highest no. 32.

In the advert on page 19 of RECORD MIRROR issue of September 29th 1990 he is credited as Junior Giscombe. However as the album Stand Strong (released on MCA 24/9/90) was not a hit most people will know him as Junior for the album Ji.

ALSO...in the Junior page...no mention of Junior!!! the singer of Mama used to say of Junior the other singer who did the Top 30 hit IRISH BLUE with All Around The World Production duo Fluip and Fill...

Why is there a separate page for Datsun and Nissan? as seen below...then again if you want separate pages...ill put Joey Negro back to its original state

Example 3 Datsun From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search Datsun is a former brand used by what is now Nissan, in order to sell their automobiles in North America and Australia. Retrieved from "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datsun"

Example 4

Nissan Motors From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (Redirected from Nissan) Jump to: navigation, search "Nissan" redirects here. For other uses, see Nissan (disambiguation). Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. (TYO: 7201 , NASDAQ: #HYPERLINK "http://quotes.nasdaq.com/asp/SummaryQuote.asp?symbol=NSANY&selected=NSANY"NSANY), which formerly marketed vehicles under the Datsun brand name, is a Japanese automobile manufacturer. The company's main offices are located in the Ginza area of Chuo-ku, Tokyo, Japan. Nissan plans to move their headquarters to Yokohama, Kanagawa by 2010; the headquarters will start construction in 2007. The company marketed vehicles under the Nissan and Datsun brand names until 1983, when the Datsun brand name was dropped. Nissan used to be Japan's second largest car company after Toyota, but it has dropped to third in size after Honda. Due to financial problems throughout the 1990s, the French manufacturer Renault bought a controlling share in the company and installed Carlos Ghosn as president, the first non-Japanese person to run a Japanese car company (Mazda was run by an American, Mark Fields and by Briton Lewis Booth and Mitsubishi was run by a German, Rolf Eckrodt). Under Ghosn's "Nissan Revival Plan" (NRP), Nissan has rebounded in what many leading economists consider to be one of the most spectacular corporate turnarounds in history, catapulting Nissan to record profits and a dramatic revitalization of both its Nissan and Infiniti model line-ups. In 2001, the company initiated Nissan 180, capitalizing on the success of the NRP. Ghosn has since been idolized as a national hero in Japan as a symbol of the strength of the currently ailing Japanese economy, with Ghosn and the Nissan revival story prominently featured in Japanese manga and popular culture. His achievements in revitalizing the Japanese company have been noted by Emperor Akihito, who awarded him the Japan Medal with Blue Ribbon in 2004. Nissan is also noted for being one of the world's leading manufacturers of automobile engines, with its VG and VQ V6 engines appearing on "Ward's 10 Best Engines" for 12 straight years - every year since the award's inception. with 2005 “You’re Not Alone” credited to Dave Lee..shouldnt this be the Dave Lee (producer) page?

P.S. The Dave Lee / Joey Negro change was done because I knew YOU probably wouldnt just go for Dave Lee (producer) on it's own

....and what has happened to deepgrove?

Well Wikipedia Number 3 resource for music in the Observer Music Monthly...? They must be jokingXljesus 14:09, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

Dave Lee (producer) or Dave Lee (music) would be fine by me and fine by Wikipedia norms, but it's still best you discuss it on the talk page first. What's he best known as, Dave Lee or Joey Negro? My objection was that you used both the names (with " / ") between them for the article name. Our policy is to keep article names obvious and concise!
Now, look, I'm not an expert on that fellow (I have a record or two of his, e.g. Gotta Keep Pushin' by Z Factor, credits say Dave Lee btw). I don't care if you call him Dave Lee or Joey Negro. But you can't call the article Dave Lee / Joey Negro. It's just not our way. We don't have Ringo Starr / Richard Starkey, Bill Drummond / Kingboy D or The KLF / The JAMs do we? :) --kingboyk 14:16, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
Where did you find the reference to the Observer Music Monthly? I'd agree that's ludicrous. It's a policy we could look at getting changed. --kingboyk 19:08, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

Advice

Mate I'd like to make a complaint to administration against this guy's use of his user page. For a start, it is offensive to me. It contravines WP:NOT and, I'm sure, many other policies. One particular part borders on incitement. He is using his userpage as a sounding board or soapbox and is quite obviously bigoted, full of hatred, and small minded: not a person I feel that is likely to submit many NPOV edits. I appreciate the recent debates about userboxes etc, but this guy goes much further than anything in the use of userboxes that I've seen.

I am not looking to get the guy banned (although my personal opinion is that Wiki would probably be better off without him). And I would note to you that if I ever come across a user who has similar (though politically opposing) beliefs, I would be just as quick to complain about them too.

I debated in my mind as to whether to put the name of the person here, as I don't necessarily want you to get involved - I just want your help in the actual complaint process (direct me to a page or whatever). Anyway, I figured you could always delete the link later, which is: User:Fenian Swine. --Mal 12:23, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

I'll delink him because I don't want issues like that spilling over onto my talk page. I'd decline to get involved, because of my newness in the 'job' and because an Englishman I don't like to get involved in such issues. Yer best bet is to post to Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents. If you want to get a one on one answer from an admin, let me direct to you User:JzG. He's English too alas, but he's no stranger to dealing with contentious issues and he's made of tougher stuff than I :) He'd be a very good chap to get answer off, I still go to him for advice myself sometimes. --kingboyk 12:51, 19 March 2006 (UTC) P.S. You're aware that I split the Beatles redlink list into a seperate page I take it?

No probs - thanks for the advice. I'm going to leave a note with JzG. PS. As a "Brit", I'd have assumed you found his userpage pretty insulting too. --Mal 04:47, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

PPS. Yup - I saw it (redlinks page). Haven't had a lot of time, but I'll probably get back to it shortly. --Mal 04:50, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

I think what he writes is distateful and (that word again) divisive, and rather unfair too. The UK today isn't an empire builder and I thought most people knew that. I'm sure as a nation the English haven't stood in the way of devolution and would happily countenance a total departure from Ireland if that's what the people of Northern Ireland wanted. It's an historical issue that is not the fault of us current English. It's also a very heated issue that I'd rather leave the judging of to somebody far removed from the situation :). A little strange perhaps but that's how I feel :) --kingboyk 08:09, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Sounds fair enough to me, and actually mirrors my own opinion somewhat. Its not as if the English people hadn't affected my own ancestors way back when (I come from Church of Ireland and Presbyterians, and the latter was actually affected much worse by the Penal Laws than Roman Catholics, resulting in many of them leaving for the New World 150 years before the Potato Famine). But I don't hold a grudge against the descendants of the few English people who were in administration at the time, nor with the English people as a 'race'. I don't know if you want to get into a discussion about it, so I'll just leave it there - I'm sure you have better things to do! ;) Oh - I'm just caught up with my watchlist now btw! --Mal 08:36, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Seems that Guy agrees with me :P He's on the ball so I feel good abt that :) --kingboyk 10:14, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Sorry :(

Oh, I'm sorry... I haven't dealt with vandals directly that much, and I thought that he was magically still vandalising. Oh well, thanks for the heads up! M o P</big> 18:50, 19 March 2006 (UTC) P.S. Your color scheme is very nice; very relaxing.

Gosh, no need to apologise! I was just letting you know for future information and a bit of reassurance. Thanks for your comments on the colour scheme, it's lovely isn't it! (I can say that, as it's not my work). --kingboyk 18:55, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

Divisive image

Thank you for your comment about the crossed out EU flag. Seems like by notifying all those who used it, ROGNNTUDJUU! ensured that they all voted against its deletion although it clearly serves a divisive purpose. Rusty2005 also wrote he regards the image as offensive. Anything that could be done about this? De mortuis... 18:53, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

I think it's use in userspace is divisive, but these things are very controversial at the moment and until a clear policy is thrashed out it might be best to just leave well alone. It is also used in an article, quite possibly validly. If you're determined you want to do something about it, all you can do is nominate it for deletion - making sure you nominate the crossed out UK and US flags at the same time of course. Please refer to Wikipedia:Images_and_media_for_deletion#Listing_images_and_media_for_deletion. I'd caution you that it might be more trouble than it's worth though, you might meet some very vociferous opposition. Furthermore, if you've got any history as an EU apologist you'd be just asking to be shot down in flames, I think. It would be unwise to try and get it deleted with anything other than a clean history as a consensus builder and encyclopedist (which, assuming good faith and having not checked your edit history, I do of course assume that you are! :)) Hope that helps. --kingboyk 19:03, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

Black Room

Thanks for the note; I certainly didn't mean to claim authorship of the page on the KLF record (though I'm surprised it's much of an issue on a collectively authored site). I do think there should be a dab page listing at least the two films and the book by that title, and that the album should be on a separate page. I am not adamant about the torture chamber having its own page, at least not yet; as I said, this could become a big issue within a few weeks (or it may not). This is all pretty new, which explains the lack of google hits (try google news), but given the circulation of the NYT, I would suspect that by tomorrow more people will have heard of the Black Room in Iraq than have heard of the (non)record by the KLF. Not that that really tells us much since we're comparing apples to orangutans. I also don't think a lower case title is appropriate for the torture building (or for the films, or the books) since the title is used in all caps in all those cases. A dab page pointing to articles for each of them would be fine, I think, whether or not anyone starts articles on each of those things right away. But I'll let you handle the page move since you're right I am used to "just doing it" the old way. Didn't mean to cause trouble :) --csloat 22:59, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

No real trouble. Pasting pages to new slots used to be how it was it done, but any old moves done that way are being undone when we find them. I certainly agree regarding disambiguation (that something needed/needs to be done); as you know but other readers of this page might not we have a dialogue going on Talk:The Black Room. --kingboyk 08:03, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Hello!
White Riot

SuggestBot picks articles in a number of ways, from comparing articles that need work to other articles you've edited, to choosing articles randomly (ensuring that all articles with cleanup tags get a chance to be cleaned up). It tries to recommend only articles that other Wikipedians have marked as needing work. Your contributions make Wikipedia better -- thanks for helping.

If you have feedback on how to make SuggestBot better, please tell me on SuggestBot's talk page. Thanks from ForteTuba, SuggestBot's caretaker.

P.S. You received these suggestions because your name was listed on the SuggestBot request page. If this was in error, sorry about the confusion. -- SuggestBot 04:11, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Stalker AND DS!

Stop stalking me! Smile... (If you have too much time on your hands, you may want to look at contribs for the user I'm interacting with, esp. Tony Sidaway's talk page...) On the other hand while it's not a barn star at least someone gave me something! So far I don't have much of a oollection... ++Lar: t/c 10:51, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Actually, no, that one's on my watchlist :) I'd had the page open ready to comment for a couple of hours but you'd beat me to it.
Already stalking your friend and yes, may be some WP:OWN/WP:CIVIL/WP:NPOV issues there. Just a preliminary assessment as I casually browse whilst eating breakfast :) --kingboyk 10:54, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
OK, I tagged the article in question and left a rationale. Beyond that I think Tony Sidaway is more than capable of fighting his own battles :) --kingboyk 11:17, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
Oh no doubt he can, that's for sure. I was more referencing it for a view into the sort of things said than any sort of call to arms to defend weak sisters... ++Lar: t/c 16:31, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
You're stalking Lar but no longer me? I feel rejected. What can Lar offer you that I can't? Where's the WikiLove? KillerChihuahua?!? 10:56, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
Sorry, no offence meant! Your page is on my watchlist, and I promise to stalk before you the week is out :) --kingboyk 11:17, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
Hot editor on editor action, baby. "Woof!" (or is it "yap" in your case, "Killer" ??) (OK, FOR THE RECORD, I am not a bear. Not that there's anything wrong with that.) ++Lar: t/c 16:31, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
