Question

I suspect Simon Whistler to be a Sock puppet of user Sonphan99 or the user Sonphan1 because of his wording [here] and his contributions. I saw that you were a checkuser so I brought it to you so that I didn't make a false sock puppet investigation without there truly needing to be one. Could you possibly check this out? I can mass-block with more or less a couple of clicks or you guys can do it. Regardless, thought I'd drop it here for review/double-check. I'd suggest 5 years, given the monolithic stability of AWS and the relative guarantees surrounding elastic ips; if anything, they'll likely only add ranges, not remove them. I dunno if we truly need a dedicated bot to deal with likely-infrequent additions, but *shrug*. As far as spillover, botflagged accounts already have ipblock-exempt, but we might, as usual, get a couple of IPBE requests from legit users whose infrastructure includes a VPN to one of their organization's VPCs, though this realistically shouldn't be a frequent issue—most companies simply aren't that advanced.   So most of them should now be blocked. I didn't override any existing blocks in case they were checkuser-blocked or have some other special significance related to past abuse (or that individually needed talk-page/email blocking(?)), but randomly sampling them gives us like 2-3 years, expiry-wise, before we should loop back around for them. If we're not as worried about that and want to go ahead and harmonize the expiries, I could totally do that, too.

  I'd support it, but I'd have to squeeze in some time (already low on that :P) if I were to do it myself. This run just seemed like a thing I could do quickly with the stuff I already had / stuff I already knew was acceptably reliable. The good thing about AWS is that you don't get to just choose your allocation, so even if a new block opens up, it's still a matter of rolling the dice quite a few times to get an allocation in it; my guess is more that prior abuse was spread across most of their existing allocations for various availability zones that it just seemed, to those dealing with the abuse most heavily, that "new" blocks were opening, even if they've been there for a while.

  This is true, and the danger probably isn't as much in just open proxies hosted there as it's also in...other...approaches. Like others have said, probably best not to de facto publicly post a how-to, but suffice it to say AWS is realistically treatable as an open proxy. :P

WikiCup 2017 September newsletter

Round 4 of the WikiCup has ended and we move forward into the final round. In round 4, a total of 12 FAs, 3 FLs, 44 GAs, 3 FLs, 79 DYKs, 1 ITN and 42 GARs was achieved, with no FPs or FTs this time. Congratulations to Peacemaker67 on the Royal Yugoslav Navy Good Topic of 36 items, and the 12 featured articles achieved by Cas Liber (5), Vanamonde93 (3), Peacemaker67 (2), Adityavagarwal (1) and 12george1 (1). With a FA scoring 200 points, and bonus points available on top of this, FAs are likely to feature heavily in the final round. Meanwhile Yellow Evan, a typhoon specialist, was contributing 12 DYKs and 10 GAs, while Adityavagarwal and Freikorp topped the GAR list with 8 reviews each. As we enter the final round, we are down to eight contestants, and we would like to thank those of you who have been eliminated for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. • ACTRIAL, a research experiment that restricts article creation to autoconfirmed users, will begin on September 7. It will run for six months. You can learn more about the research specifics at meta:Research:Autoconfirmed article creation trial, while Wikipedia talk:Autoconfirmed article creation trial is probably the best venue for general discussion.
• Following an RfC, WP:G13 speedy deletion criterion now applies to any page in the draftspace that has not been edited in six months. There is a bot-generated report, updated daily, to help identify potentially qualifying drafts that have not been submitted through articles for creation.

Technical news

• You will now get a notification when someone tries to log in to your account and fails. If they try from a device that has logged into your account before, you will be notified after five failed attempts. You can also set in your preferences to get an email when someone logs in to your account from a new device or IP address, which may be encouraged for admins and accounts with sensitive permissions.
• Syntax highlighting is now available as a beta feature (more info). This may assist administrators and template editors when dealing with intricate syntax of high-risk templates and system messages.
• In your notification preferences, you can now block specific users from pinging you. This functionality will soon be available for Special:EmailUser as well.

Sorry about that, I didn't actually see the topic ban until after the 2nd edit. I guess there's no software enforcement to restrict which space I edit in ... I assumed that it would be a block of some kind. Questions:

• Does this ban extend to the entire WP: space? (which in my eyes seems punitive, because I do work in project pages, where there's not been an issue, and at AFD where I think I've worked well for a couple of year).
• As you've surely noticed, I was in the middle of writing a counter proposal. I thought I could offer something that would keep everyone happy enough to avoid an appeal, and an editor suggested I ask for closure - so I thought I'd have the chance to accept a TB which dealt with the actual issue, and didn't have as much collateral damage.
• So what do I do now? Can I appeal directly to ANI? Or do I have to resort to Arbcom - which seems rather a large hammer, for quite frankly, a small nail. I can't accept a block that is so broad, when the problem is narrow. Is there an in-between process? If it's off to a different forum, then just hat or delete my counter proposal.
• I think you nailed consensus on the boomerang - though I find the the lack of interest in pillar violation by ANI troubling, when I've been jammed up on a poorly worded, not particularly accessible guideline, that I actually'd not seen before, and quickly removed the offending text.
• Jays are going to take the pennant.
• Sorry for the questions. I'm actually not that familiar with this type of topic ban; normally they for a mainspace issue, or much more targeted. I've looked around ... but if there's a page somewhere on how topic bans for particular namespsaces work, just point me to it.

How to act in these situations?

Hi Katie. How do you suggest I approach a WP:DUCK situation? I've come across three accounts that are undoubtedly in cahoots with each other, and opening and SPI would be a waste of time IMO. The accounts are: Marygril, Marysupergril, and Marylucygril. I don't want to hit them with a sock puppetry block unless I know that that's the right action. Repeated failed log-in attempts

Hi Katie- Thanks for weighing in at IP address of unknown device (can't find the interwiki shortcut for Mediawiki!). Half FYI, half question re whether there's anything I should do: I continue to get notices at least every other day that there have been multiple failed log-in attempts on my account. These come from en, fr, de, and commons. Unless this is the system reiterating the same notifications (I've been marking them read as they come up), it seems that someone is making an ongoing effort to log in to my account. Do you have any thoughts on this? I usurped my username a few years ago, but I doubt this issue is related to that as no one had any issue with it. Thanks in advance for any input. @Eric: See mw:Help:Login notifications. Did you unsuccessfully attempt to login to your account yourself? If not, indeed, someone is trying to get in. So long as your password is secure and unique to Wikimedia, you have nothing to worry about. You can disable the notifications in your preferences. However you might consider opting in to get an email where there is a "Login from an unfamiliar device" (same for you, Katie!). That will let you know when your account has actually been compromised -- but again, if you have a secure password, you should not need to worry. Also note your own logins are counted for. So if you login from a new device, don't freak out when you get an email :) Hope this helps — MusikAnimal ^talk 13:30, 13 September 2017 (UTC)
