Hazelsletterings (again)

Hi MER-C,

I've been in email contact with Hazelsletterings. I'm convinced that she wants to contribute and is amenable to mentorship and a topic ban. Is there some way that we could commute her indefinite block into a temporary block and topic ban? I'm offering my time and energy for the rehabilitation effort. --Slashme (talk) 12:56, 27 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

I don't believe them. UPE and sockpuppetry are both dishonest acts that demonstrate the editor does not have the honesty and integrity to edit Wikipedia. The aim of nearly all UPE is professional lying - marketing, public relations, search engine optimisation - and therefore the only acceptable response is maximum cynicism. There is still no explanation for the coordinated editing, which I think is meatpuppetry. MER-C 18:15, 27 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Quarantining

Hi MER-C. I noticed a spam article that you moved to Draft space with the comment "Quarantine likely covert advertising". This seems like a very appropriate action, and I am wondering if it would also be suitable for other spam articles that I've come across. So is there any guidance or links to policies you can give me about when quarantining is an appropriate action? Cheers, 1292simon (talk) 09:07, 28 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

It is effective because it punts the spam page out of mainspace and therefore their spam doesn't get indexed by Google. Paid editors must not make inclusion decisions. I don't want to see community time wasted at AFD deleting the garbage, or even worse deciding to keep it. It's even more effective as an admin because I block those who I suspect of UPE spamming. Quarantine is only applicable for recently created articles - within the last six months, everything else has to go through AFD. MER-C 12:23, 28 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the explanation. That sounds like a much more effective method than clogging up AfD with spam articles. I'm guessing it can be a difficult job trying to keep promotional articles off Wikipedia, so thanks for all your efforts. Cheers, 1292simon (talk) 22:25, 28 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Not ready to fully comply with WP:PAID

As per off-wiki evidence (in your inbox) user Babitahamdard was hired to move and remove the paid tag from Draft:Fahad Badar through Upwork, but not ready to accept and disclose under WP:DISCLOSEPAY. They are mostly creating promotional articles. GSS💬 05:33, 29 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

  • When I said I do not want to disclose. But the Upwork source is not mine. After consulting the client I got that my client has hired someone else before it was not me. I only came into the picture after the 26th of August 2020. I already disclosed to Wikipedia that I am a paid editor. Yes, I will not remove Paid tag again until the admin tells. Thank you. At last, I was never hired through Upwork. I am a female Wikipedia contributor and want to use it for good. --Babitahamdard (talk) 07:55, 10 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Boxing Page

Hi MER-C - I would like to republish the Draft:David Diamante that had been flagged as spam. David is an acquaintance of mine who has done enough in the boxing/sports business to warrant his own page. I've edited the page and added appropriate citations to better reflect what it is that makes him noteworthy: his ring announcing. Given the changes I have made and the citations I have added (NY Times, Wall Street Journal, The New Yorker) of feature pieces about him I would sincerely appreciate his page being republished on the Wikipedia platform. Ed Emmett article deletion

Can I ask why the article on "Ed Emmett," a local Harris County Texas leader and politician, was deleted? It appears the reason may have been copyright issues, but that seems odd, given that the article has been active for some 12 years. It also seems strange that a copyright issue would result in the deletion of an entire article. I'm new to this, so just wondering. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:2C6:8180:5480:C02A:8D3E:104F:516E (talk) 02:54, 1 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

File:Cobra-papagaio - Bothrops bilineatus - Ilhéus - Bahia.jpg scheduled for POTD

Hi MER-C,

This is to let you know that the featured picture File:Cobra-papagaio - Bothrops bilineatus - Ilhéus - Bahia.jpg, which you uploaded or nominated, has been selected as the English Wikipedia's picture of the day (POTD) for September 23, 2020. A preview of the POTD is displayed below and can be edited at Template:POTD/2020-09-23. If you have any concerns, please place a message at Wikipedia talk:Picture of the day. Thank you! Cwmhiraeth (talk) 11:34, 6 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Bothrops bilineatus is a highly venomous species of pit viper found in the Amazon region of South America. A pale green arboreal species that may reach 1 m (3.3 ft) in length, it is an important cause of snakebite throughout the entire Amazon region. It is a nocturnal species, spending the day hidden in dense vegetation in lowland rainforest, usually in the vicinity of water. It emerges at night to feed on small mammals, birds, lizards and frogs, tending to rely on ambush rather than actively hunting for prey. This B. bilineatus individual was photographed in an Atlantic Forest preservation area in the state of Bahia in eastern Brazil.

Hi MER-C. Not the issue I normally raise, but could you throw down 24hrs of semi-protection at Shibani Dandekar? When something appears to be UPE.. and they deny it.

Usually the pattern starts with brand new account that jumps right into companies or people related editing with skills and familiarity with Wikipedia not reasonable for someone just starting for the first time and completely fluent with the codes, but "unfamiliar" with sourcing rules and other guidelines. When a paid-UW1 is left and the person denies it, is that essentially the end of it? Graywalls (talk) 21:33, 10 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Category spamming

I assume know you're an admin, even though I see your signature mostly on FPC. Could you please take a look at the over 200 category spams by this editor - I reverted one, but found many, many more:

- looks like some automated tool was used for the spamming. I have no idea how to revert such a massive cat spam... Regards, --Janke | Talk 21:50, 11 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

It's already been reverted. However I've given you rollback to help deal with something like this faster if it arises again. MER-C 09:09, 12 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, but I don't know if rollback would have helped in this case, since the 200 edits were made on different pages - have to look into the "user manual"... --Janke | Talk 11:15, 12 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
Nope, won't work on 200 different article pages, you'd have to go to each one and do the rollback. I'm sure admins have tools for reverting such a massive amount of edits? I don't need/want any such tools, in fact, I'm not even sure I'll ever use the rollback feature. --Janke | Talk 11:35, 12 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
Head to Special:Contributions/X and click on each rollback link so that it opens in a new tab. MER-C 11:48, 12 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
Am I missing something, or would I still have to click on 200 links to revert such a huge mistake by the cat spammer? (Looks like it was unintentional, using an unfamiliar tool...) --Janke | Talk 18:50, 12 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
Then use User:Writ Keeper/Scripts/massRollback.js to revert everything in one click. MER-C 19:00, 12 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Both @MF Worldwide and @IBC Worldwide are single purpose accounts who have been trying to get this draft: Draft:Leesaseal into mainspace all day long, first the draft article was created by @IBC Worldwide under the name of “Leesa” see here where it was speedy deleted for being too promotional. Shortly after another editor @MF Worldwide recreated the draft under a different name “Leesaseal” and that too was G11 deleted. Yet again it has been recreated once more by MF Worldwide as seen here. Next Insurance

Hi MER-C,

I joined Next Insurance recently and wondered why can't I write an article about the company. It seems like improper past attempts got the article Salted. This was when the company was small was not notable and it read as covered advertising and I'd like to apologize for that.

Nonetheless, I strongly believe Next Insurance now meets the notability conditions today since (1) it's has become one of the top insurtech companies in the world (2) All similar and even less notable insurtech companies seem to meet the notability conditions, and all of them have an active article (Lemonade, Root, Metromile, Hippo and many more).

Recent references regarding its notability:

I can provide numerous additional reliable and independent sources to support it.

Again, apologies for previous attempts (it proceeds my time) and we will make sure that the new edit will be reliable and independent. I'll also disclose my COI as a connected contributor. Effifuks (talk) 22:07, 24 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Subramaniam's wife's blog https://sathiamanai.blogspot.com Her profile displays as follows: "Please note that I started this in 2009 only and the events up-to 1969 are placed in 1970. I have re-posted the events after 1971 accordingly. I retired from the Government of Sri Lanka in 1991 and lived in Singapore from 1998 to 2011. Currently living in Chulipuram, Sri Lanka. I, wife of K.A. Subramaniam and mother of PLOTE Meeran Master ( Sathiarajan 1962 -2001) give my full copyright permission from this Blog's contents to re-produce in Wikipedia or any other media. I permit the use of my material under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-Sharealike 3.0 Unported License (CC-BY-SA) and the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) (unversioned, with no invariant sections, front-cover texts, or back-cover texts).- Valliammai Subramaniam". Also I searched and found many other independent resources in Tamil and translated them for citations in English. This article took a lot of my time from 29 July to 29 August 2020. Please be assured that I will not violate any copyrights in future. Roshan Sylu (talk) 10:30, 26 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

By translate, did you directly translate a source and pasted the resulting English language text into Wikipedia? That is also a copyright violation.
As to why you need to be patient I am the only one handling copyright problem listings at the moment, the process is massively backlogged and WP:VOLUNTEER. MER-C 11:14, 26 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

I confirm that the imported texts are from 'Noolaham' and 'Sathiamanai' only. I used the third party resources for verification of the imported text only and made these translated title's links as references. I am extremely sorry for adding your work load and please trust me that I will be more careful in my future edits. Roshan Sylu (talk) 00:55, 27 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

A new potential UPE

A sleeper for a long period, please see this contributions log] which shows behaviour charateristic of gaming the system. Notice that the eidtor has applied today to be an AFC reviewer! There are a couple of decent edits in the history, but the meat of it is the extraordinary competence they show in creating Kalyana Vaibhogam (TV series) and then ofering it up for G7 when challenged. Something here is quacking very loudly, and it needs someone with your skillset to get to the bottom of it, please. Fiddle Faddle 12:40, 27 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

I have hired freelancers on freelance platforms to clean up Matt Fraser (psychic) and I was not aware that they should disclose it. I declare that I have hired them and they are working to improve the page. Dont delete these pages. Please revert all edits but don't delete these pages and I was not aware of non-disclosure is a policy violation. I am here to support the cause and but dont want deletion of page like that happened in 2017. This freelancer has claimed that he drive editors on dispute resolution and other talk pages to clean this page, he has been already paid and nothing is happening now. I cant pay him more and I have also realized that he has created a new account and not a senior account that he claimed. I am really highly disappointed and feel like cheated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.90.177.198 (talk) 04:21, 1 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

MER-C, I'm looking at this as trolling. The IP has accused editors of being paid on pages where they have never edited, [2][3] and it looks like a Joe job. - Bilby (talk) 04:35, 1 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Work–life balance

Hi, I see you are involved in the copyright issue regarding the page Work–life balance. Has the matter been forgotten about or is it making progress? The page has been unavailable to view for over a month now and from what I can see nothing is being done to try and restore the page to be viewable again. The page is still getting hundreds of views every day but none of these people have been able to view the page's content for over a month due to the copyright notice. Naqsh-e Rostam is an ancient Persian necropolis located about 12 km (7.5 mi) northwest of Persepolis in Iran. The site includes rock reliefs from the Achaemenid and Sassanid periods, and four tombs of Achaemenid kings. The oldest relief, dating from around 1000 BC, is thought to be Elamite in origin. The tombs carved into the rock, as seen from left to right in this panoramic photograph, are thought to belong to Darius II (423–404 BC), Artaxerxes I (465–424 BC), Darius I (522–486 BC), and Xerxes I (486–465 BC), respectively. An inscription on the facade of Darius I's tomb mentions his conquests and achievements. In the far left of the image is the Cube of Zoroaster, belonging to the Achaemenid era (5th century BC); its purpose is unclear. Inscriptions on its walls in three languages have been described as the "most important historical documents from the Sassanian era".

SPA only

I think with his autobiography currently in his sandbox & simultaneously on his Userpage as well , coupled with casual usage of multiple accounts it is safe to say he isn’t here to build an encyclopedia but only to self promote. Celestina007 (talk) 16:23, 12 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

I think it's gross incompetence. Not a SPA though because of Draft:Paul Ekpo. MER-C 17:56, 12 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
You are correct, it’s most likely competency related. I’d be keeping an eye on them. Celestina007 (talk) 12:50, 13 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
