Back in January you reverted this article to a redirect to My Chemical Romance. A new version of the article has been created and nominated for DYK. To my eye, the sourcing is dubious rather than reliable (mostly TV.com, with a bit of IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes thrown in), and I'm not convinced that notability has been established. Can you take a look to see whether Mikey is now notable, or the article is premature? Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 04:45, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
- Sorry for the late response, BlueMoonset. You'd probably be better off getting another admin to take a look at this article; unfortunately, I'm kind of on a wikibreak right now having burnt out on copyright issues. Sorry, — madman 15:13, 10 December 2012 (UTC)
MadmanBot down
It looks like it hasn't been running in a few days. Any chance you can restart it?
As I recall the script just crashes when it hits blacklisted URLs (and a few other rarer situations), so back when I had a connection that could handle me running my backup I launched it with the following shell script to keep it up and running as much as possible.
while true
- do
- perl csb.pl
done
VernoWhitney (talk) 14:07, 12 December 2012 (UTC)
I'll restart it when I get homeI've restarted it. It's pretty resilient; I think it had been running since early last month until now with no intervention. But I'll have to set up a Nagios trigger to restart it at some point as I get more and more busy at work. Thanks! — madman 21:13, 12 December 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for handling it. I've never used Nagios, I'll have to look into that for my own projects. VernoWhitney (talk) 18:14, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
Glitch in MadmanBot
Can you take a look at this edit from MadmanBot and see what it is doing? There's a thread over at WP:HD with a user that wants to know what is going on, and in investigating it looks like MadmanBot had a little malfunction, because it tagged the article as a copyvio of itself, I don't know how that works, exactly. Could you look into this and then comment over at the thread at WP:HD? Thanks! --Jayron32 14:45, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
- Here are other examples: [1][2][3]. Google is often very fast to index Wikipedia articles. I think they use a feed. If MadmanBot makes a Google search right after page creation then it has to check whether the hit is the page itself. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:18, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) It's a bug caused by the single apostrophe in the article names. I'll take a look at my code (not MadmanBot but a near-cousin) and see how I handled it. VernoWhitney (talk) 17:52, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

sub TagPage ($$$)
along with the rest of the reasons to not tag a page I added the following line:return "already-tagged" if $type eq 'wikipage' && decode_entities($title) eq $what;
- That or something similar should do the trick. VernoWhitney (talk) 18:18, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

- I had thought that my approval didn't cover changes to CorenSearchBot's code, but upon review I did mention I'd fixed some problems with HTML entities, so I'll reinstate those fixes (they were removed when I updated to CorenSearchBot's latest code release). False positives
Regarding this diff, it would be possible to reduce the number of similar false positives by searching matched content for 'Wikipedia'. — C M B J 05:52, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
- It's probably safer to just add that website to User:MadmanBot/exclude. Legoktm (talk) 05:57, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
- That would be the best way, yes. I need to figure out how to publicize that page better, maybe on the bot's User page. — madman 06:45, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
MadmanBot
I've just had to block MadmanBot as it's obviously malfunctioning. It hasn't tagged any copyvios all day, but it has left over 500 warning messages to one editor concerning Monarchy of Sierra Leone. Feel free to unblock if you think you've fixed the problem. Hut 8.5 17:30, 4 January 2013 (UTC)
- Wow. I've profusely apologized to that contributor. I'm unblocking, but I have halted that task and will only restart it once I'm 100% sure what happened. This may be a sign that it's time to stop using Coren's code and rewrite in a language with which I'm more familiar. Thanks, — madman 22:46, 4 January 2013 (UTC)
- FWIW, it looks like only some manual requests are being processed by the bot. I had added one for the Maersk Lines and it's still stuck on unprocessed. Blue Riband► 17:22, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
- I'm not running the bot at all while I'm rewriting it. It's not processing any manual requests. I apologize for the inconvenience. — madman 18:09, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
- I haven't looked at my logs yet, but your bot isn't the only one that had a freak out -- see an example from VWBot which wasn't using any of the same code as the SCV task (it's not even in perl). VernoWhitney (talk) 18:38, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
- Interesting! I'm 99% sure of what happened now. How does your code handle circumstances in which action=edit returns a result other than Success? Coren's code will keep retrying the edit until it does get a result of Success, whereas I prefer to have my code throw an exception (as that's an exceptional condition), print debug information, and die so I can protect against that condition in the future. Clearly the API was giving my bot a result other than Success; while I don't know what that result was, I am approved to fix bugs like that and bring the bot back up without having to get approval for a total revamp just yet. Excellent! — madman 00:42, 8 January 2013 (UTC)

- Manual requests don't go through all the same normalization routines that automatic requests go through before they get tagged. I'll put those articles in the queue again with spaces and if the same thing happens, see what the bug is. Thanks, — madman 22:22, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

Happy New Year (and HighBeam round 6)
Hey Madman, once you recover from jovial wine-soaked solstice celebrations, and giving MadmanBot a good troutsmack, would you possibly be able to send out HighBeam round 6?

Hermann Freese
Hi, your bot tagged Hermann Freese for possible copyright violation. The text was taken from a public domain book. I see two possible methods of avoiding this: either exclude http://www.ebooksread.com as a possible source (since it contains many public domain books), or exclude articles tagged with Template:Bryan (and other similar tags, see Category:Reference works in the public domain). If neither of these is possible, don't worry, I can always simply remove your tags, but it does clutter up the edit history and looks so ugly on my talk page :-) Fram (talk) 14:50, 16 January 2013 (UTC)
- The bot has a list of templates that indicate public domain sources; I have added
{{Bryan}}
to that list. Feel free to remove the tag (with an appropriate edit summary so SCV volunteers know what's going on) and the warning. Cheers! — madman 01:31, 17 January 2013 (UTC)- Thanks! Fram (talk) 08:06, 17 January 2013 (UTC)

Email issues
Hey Madman, sorry to bother you. I've had 3 editors so far tell me that their codes never delivered, and none tell me yet they got them (note: the 3 were not in the original six that failed). Is it possible that the bot didn't deliver, if so can we check, and if necessary, can we run it again? Best, Ocaasi t | c 20:13, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
- Per e-mail discussion over the last couple days, not sure what the problem was but it's likely been resolved; going to try to re-deliver sometime today. Cheers, — madman 21:07, 26 January 2013 (UTC)
- I've re-delivered and this time I got Cced messages from MediaWiki so I think this has been resolved. Cheers, — madman 00:34, 27 January 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot for setting up the bot job. It worked fine. It's a bit unintuitive, though, that one has to provide both codes in one concatenated string - had to check thrice until i got it ;) So, if there come up any questions, that might be a cause. Looks to me like MadmanBot reported a copyright infringement for a Wikipedia mirror (mashpedia). I've removed the notice and put a comment on the talk page.--Bbb23 (talk) 01:25, 28 January 2013 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) It was at Mashpedia because the first incarnation of the page was already deleted. Speedily (A7) so this doesn't qualify for G4, and by the same author, so no attribution history needs to be restored. VernoWhitney (talk) 02:43, 28 January 2013 (UTC)
- I know you're trying to help, which I appreciate, but, unfortunately, I don't follow what you're saying. I just want to know why MadmanBot reported copyright infringement for an apparent mirror. I'm assuming that MadmanBot is aware of mirrors; otherwise, there would be false notices all the time. Am I missing something?--Bbb23 (talk) 02:55, 28 January 2013 (UTC)
- MadmanBot can't automagically detect mirrors; it's not, in a sense, aware of anything. It has to be told what sites are mirrors. The list it observes is here. Thanks, — madman 03:51, 28 January 2013 (UTC)
- That was my guess. Does that mean you'll add mashpieda to the list?--Bbb23 (talk) 16:41, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

Please delist me
I was approved for HighBeam in Round 5. When I applied it appeared I would have lots more time in the future to devote to article creation etc, but that didn't eventuate. It would be more useful to a more active editor so please cancel my authority to use and give it to someone on the waiting list. Moriori (talk) 22:23, 29 January 2013 (UTC)
- I'm not involved in the Wikipedia Library project at all; I'm just the messenger. I'll ping Ocaasi (talk · contribs). Did you use the code you were given? If not, I assume it may be given to someone else to use but if so, I assume instead that it's gone. — madman 02:19, 30 January 2013 (UTC)

I know you said not to make any manual reports so I won't, but when are the next round of reports coming for March? It doesn't seem the bot sent out notifications. Regards, — Moe Epsilon 07:04, 6 February 2013 (UTC)
- Oh, BUGGER. I did the report (so I'm not sure what you mean by that; it's the first section on the page), but I did forget to send out the first round of notifications. I'll do that now, and it's up to the bureaucrats whether to delay the desysop date; I'll configure the bot accordingly. Thanks and apologies, — madman 07:16, 6 February 2013 (UTC)
- Oh, by report I also had assumed you meant the notification process, so sorry for the confusion there. Thanks for taking care of it, mate. Regards, — Moe Epsilon 08:12, 6 February 2013 (UTC)
SCV is botless again
Since my connection isn't sufficient to keep VWBot running as backup, and I still haven't gotten around to migrating it to something other than my home server. VernoWhitney (talk) 03:16, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
- Restarted. I'll put an automatic restart on it within a couple days; it's just that the last time I did that, the bot ended up leaving 500 messages on that poor sod's talk page. Sure, the two events turned out to be unrelated but you can't work in IT and not indulge a certain amount of superstition. In any case, wish I'd known sometime before it was down for two weeks. — madman 03:38, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
- Hey there! I'm working on the new Labs infrastructure for tools and bots which (amongst other things) will allow shared custody of specific tools. CSBot seems like a very nice test case, given that three of us have traditionally operated it at different times. How do you feel about being one of the test cases? :-) MPelletier (WMF) (talk) 16:38, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- Hmmm. Right now I have it on its own instance because it's part of a larger research project. I'm also a little concerned over shared custody because it uses Yahoo! BOSS credentials belonging to the WMF. I'll think about it (probably once I've rewritten it as I plan). Cheers! — madman 22:59, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- Hopefully this shouldn't be a problem in the future; I installed nagios-core on the server and set it up to e-mail me when certain files stop showing signs of activity (checking for the existence of the process wouldn't have helped in this case as the bot was apparently still running). Thanks, — madman 08:34, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
Your bot sucks the big one!
← I've revised the existing fix to take a rather shotgun approach toward attempting to address all cases. It's 3:30 a.m. where I am and I'm beyond tired by now. If Canoe1967 or any other user wishes to take me to ANI for going to bed when the bot has not been "proven as fixed", they are more than welcome to do so and I'll continue this in the morning. But I recommend a nice cup of tea and a sit down instead; they're much more fulfilling in the long run. Wishing a good night to all, — madman 08:39, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

Bot Data Reprise
Hello madman...I hope this finds you well. About a year ago, you helped me with my bot research by aggregating bot edits and bot registrations for many of the WM projects. I'm wondering if you'd be able to run that query again for some updated stats. I know you're quite busy, so no worries if this is a bit much to ask (in that case, if you know someone else who could aid me, I'd appreciate the referral). Thank you in advance for the consideration! UOJComm (talk) 14:49, 8 February 2013 (UTC)
- Sure, I can probably do this sometime near the end of next week (I'm having eye surgery, so I'll have a couple days off). Thanks, — madman 21:00, 8 February 2013 (UTC)
- That is really awesome...thanks so much. I am drafting a book chapter on bots across different language versions of Wikipedia (stats on bots as well as comparing approval processes, etc.). Updated data would be extremely helpful, and I will certainly acknowledge your contribution. I'm not sure if it's your thing, but if you're interested collaborating on this or a related project (i.e. coauthoring for academic publication), please let me know. It doesn't pay well (ha! doesn't pay anything!) except for the cultural capital. Anyway, best of luck with your surgery, and thank you again for your help with this. UOJComm (talk) 18:47, 12 February 2013 (UTC)
- Sorry I've been putting this off; I miss one day at work and everything catches on fire. I'll make sure I pull these stats this weekend. Regarding research opportunities, I'll contact you via e-mail probably at the same time I have the stats; I'd be pretty interested. Cheers! — madman 23:01, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

- bot-registrations data is done and bot-edits data is accumulating. I'll pull both sets of data in the morning if the latter is ready, make them less "raw", and send them off. False positive
Hey Madman. I just wanted to let you know that there may be an issue with the bot tagging false positives. I recently created New York Central Tugboat 16, and it placed a tag there that said that it was copied directly from another site. I already raised the issue there for the editor who will revert the bot, but the issue was that the issues that are supposedly enough to tag are just preference for sharing the same prose, and there are really only two or three things that would warrant a tag, and they are five words long. I could flip words around to make it better, but I was wondering if there has been an issue in the past where the bots that do this task have tagged such small positives as this, or is it just a small fluke that I am making too much of a big deal out of. Thanks for the help! Kevin Rutherford (talk) 05:53, 23 February 2013 (UTC)
- I wouldn't say false positives are a frequent issue. The bot has some technical limitations in the kind of analysis it can do; for example, it's restricted to analyzing a (relatively) small portion of the beginning of a Web page due to memory constraints. It's also important to note that its analysis is not the same kind of analysis that Duplication Detector does; they are two different kinds of tools. In any case, I apologize for the false positive. For almost all of the limitations I've identified in the code I inherited from Coren, I have planned improvements for the next version of this task, and I have high hopes for its efficacy. Thanks! — madman 04:45, 25 February 2013 (UTC)
- No problem! The bot's error actually has led to me cleaning out that category enough that there is no longer a backlog, so I guess it was a good thing at the day. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 02:12, 26 February 2013 (UTC)

False positive for article La Rumorosa. Please revise your bot to specifically exclude templates Robogun (talk) 20:22, 28 February 2013 (UTC)

False positive
False positive for article Yoo Dong-geun, the bot tagged it as a copy of [9] because they both list titles of movies and TV shows the actor has appeared in. I'm not sure that can be fixed, but the bot should at least ignore phrases that are always present in MediaWiki websites, like "retrieved from http", "navigation main page", "privacy policy about", "toolbox what links here related changes", "this page was last modified on", "jump to navigation search", since those are not part of the article's content. Mushroom (Talk) 10:41, 5 March 2013 (UTC)
- The bot doesn't match against MediaWiki artifacts such as the ones you list because it only checks the content of the article, not how it's rendered. False positives caused by things such as filmographies, track listings, etc. with insufficient originality to merit copyright protection are a known problem and I hope to incorporate heuristics into the next version of MadmanBot that will cut down on them. Deletion of Article Rajit Gadh
I am writing in regards to the speedy deletion of article Rajit Gadh. I saw that phrases in the article matched a URL to the bio on IEEE.org site. However the original source of the bio is from the official UCLA SMERC website. I have now added licenses from CreativeCommons and GNU for use of the bio. How do I prevent MadManBot from detecting from IEEE.org?
Thanks.Ucsglarc (talk) 16:27, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
- Unfortunately I can't whitelist IEEE.org as most of the content at that Web site is indeed copyrighted, and they're particularly vehement in protecting their copyright. But if you re-create the article, you can place the
{{Text release}}
template on its talk page and this should protect it from deletion. If you'd like me to undelete the article, please just let me know. Thanks, — madman 23:56, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
MadmanBot false positive
I see the bot's started tagging AfC submissions. It tagged Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/cscqc as a copyvio from [11], although the only content the pages have in common is some templated instructions common to all AfC submissions. I imagine this is going to arise again in future, so is it possible to work around this? Hut 8.5 12:08, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
- That's odd. The normalizewikitext function removes templates before doing comparisons. And having removed templates, I'd think there would have been too few tokens (words) in the article to do any comparisons. I'll look into this; thanks. — madman 15:31, 18 March 2013 (UTC)

Oy. Since you use templates from your userspace rather than the csb- ones in Template, if both our bots are running mine can't notice yours. Is there a reason why you're using copies the the templates rather than the project-wide ones?

- You know, I'm not 100% sure. I seem to recall having to search and replace something-- maybe some of the parameters didn't take a username parameter or use {{REVISIONUSER}}? Probably only a couple templates had a problem but I just copied the lot. I added {{User:MadmanBot/Csb- to regexes to see if a page was already tagged. See User talk:RHaworth#Self-help. I believe Tag469 when they say that Self Help, Inc. was not copied from http://www.linkedin.com/company/self-help-inc so it might be worthwhile taking a moment to find out why your bot thought it was. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 20:21, 22 March 2013 (UTC)
- Everything but the last sentence was copied from the Linkedin page (same content as the Facebook page), permalink here: http://www.linkedin.com/company/487275. Yahoo!'s results from Linkedin are sometimes confusing; I think they change URLs in some respect to be SEO-friendly, and sometimes there will be a list of results visible in a Web browser but the company profile for the #1 result in the page source. Unfortunately I don't think there's a lot that can be done to deal with that, but results from Linkedin are almost never false positives nonetheless. Thanks, — madman 17:12, 23 March 2013 (UTC)

Dev Ross Page
Madman, so appreciative of the work you do...the information was not a copyright infringement, as I am the author of the IMDb article.
I am creating one already approved page in which Ms Ross is a producer. I went to IMDb for bio information and when it wasn't there, I requested it from her. She sent me info, asked if I could create something and include it on IMDb, which I did. If I had posted it on Wiki first, this wouldn't have been an issue.
I realized that there are many Wiki pages mentioning her, already, so, due to her vast contributions and awards in children's entertainment, she qualifies in having a page. On the Wiki page, I went further than just her bio and connected links, entered the dates of awards, connected the citations proving the information for the Emmy, PBS ACT, Humanatis, etc. awards. I hadn't finished with everything, due to time constraints, and saved an "article" that is a stub, but complete in informational purposes. Unfortunately, as I was responding to yet, another, editor, and adding in additional information, a third editor deleted my page and I did not have the most recent additions saved anywhere else.
I did create a talk page, after your alert, to let anyone else know that the information and document was my own writing, but that did not seem to deter the administrator, whose talk page shows she is deleting a lot of pages without review and she admits to being new. Quite frustrating as Dev is already mentioned in many Wiki articles and I was writing this page so that they could all reference her, as well as allow me to reference Dev in my article, keeping it from being "an orphan".
I truly appreciate the approach you took to allow me to remedy a situation before annihilation. I just don't know what to do to regain my lost hours of work. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Smacorder (talk • contribs) 22:29, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

Fireball (liqueur)
Hello, Madman! Please help! We are the brand owners of Fireball, which is NOT a liqueur, but a cinnamon flavored Canadian whisky. We recently created the page "Fireball Cinnamon Whisky" and posted the correct, current information on the product, and posted a redirect on the "Fireball (liqueur)" page to the FCW page. However, we really need the "Fireball (liqueur)" page to be removed altogether. Can you do that, or let me know how I can do that? Thank you! ccharters — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ccharters (talk • contribs) 18:13, 24 April 2013 (UTC)
- Looking into this. I think the MadmanBot tag is a false positive, so I'm going to remove it. I don't think removing Fireball (liqueur) as a redirect is necessary. It's existed at that location for a year and a half so some people are going to be directed there, and they're going to be redirected to the correct article. Is that really a problem? I think we'll need to rename Fireball Cinnamon Whisky though; doesn't really meet our manual of style guidelines. Perhaps Fireball (whisky)? P.S.: You are the brand owners of an excellent whisky. — madman 03:10, 25 April 2013 (UTC)
- If there was something wrong with the content of the "Fireball (liqueur)" article, the content of that article should have been improved instead of creating a new completely-redundant article about the same product. Moreover, User:Ccharters is an account of an employee of the company, and should not be creating articles written to promote the company's products or point of view. The product is not whisky, since whisky should not be something that contains sweeteners and flavouring. I suggest to look up the definition of whisky and the definition of liqueur and decide for yourself whether the product is whisky or a liqueur. In any case, the content issue should be discussed and resolved at Talk:Fireball (liqueur), not by creating a new article. Incidentally, here is a link to a photo of this product with the word liqueur on its own label. —BarrelProof (talk) 18:33, 29 April 2013 (UTC)
