Mikey Way

Back in January you reverted this article to a redirect to My Chemical Romance. A new version of the article has been created and nominated for DYK. To my eye, the sourcing is dubious rather than reliable (mostly TV.com, with a bit of IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes thrown in), and I'm not convinced that notability has been established. MadmanBot down

It looks like it hasn't been running in a few days. Any chance you can restart it?

As I recall the script just crashes when it hits blacklisted URLs (and a few other rarer situations), so back when I had a connection that could handle me running my backup I launched it with the following shell script to keep it up and running as much as possible.

Glitch in MadmanBot

Can you take a look at this edit from MadmanBot and see what it is doing? There's a thread over at WP:HD with a user that wants to know what is going on, and in investigating it looks like MadmanBot had a little malfunction, because it tagged the article as a copyvio of itself, I don't know how that works, exactly. Could you look into this and then comment over at the thread at WP:HD? Thanks! --Jayron32 14:45, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

Here are other examples: [1][2][3]. Google is often very fast to index Wikipedia articles. I think they use a feed. If MadmanBot makes a Google search right after page creation then it has to check whether the hit is the page itself. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:18, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

Within sub TagPage ($$$) along with the rest of the reasons to not tag a page I added the following line:

return "already-tagged" if $type eq 'wikipage' && decode_entities($title) eq $what;

I had thought that my approval didn't cover changes to CorenSearchBot's code, but upon review I did mention I'd fixed some problems with HTML entities, so I'll reinstate those fixes (they were removed when I updated to CorenSearchBot's latest code release). False positives

I've just had to block MadmanBot as it's obviously malfunctioning. It hasn't tagged any copyvios all day, but it has left over 500 warning messages to one editor concerning Monarchy of Sierra Leone. Feel free to unblock if you think you've fixed the problem. Hut 8.5 17:30, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

I haven't looked at my logs yet, but your bot isn't the only one that had a freak out -- see an example from VWBot which wasn't using any of the same code as the SCV task (it's not even in perl). VernoWhitney (talk) 18:38, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

Interesting! I'm 99% sure of what happened now. How does your code handle circumstances in which action=edit returns a result other than Success? Coren's code will keep retrying the edit until it does get a result of Success, whereas I prefer to have my code throw an exception (as that's an exceptional condition), print debug information, and die so I can protect against that condition in the future. Clearly the API was giving my bot a result other than Success; while I don't know what that result was, I am approved to fix bugs like that and bring the bot back up without having to get approval for a total revamp just yet. Hi, your bot tagged Hermann Freese for possible copyright violation. The text was taken from a public domain book. I see two possible methods of avoiding this: either exclude http://www.ebooksread.com as a possible source (since it contains many public domain books), or exclude articles tagged with Template:Bryan (and other similar tags, see Category:Reference works in the public domain). If neither of these is possible, don't worry, I can always simply remove your tags, but it does clutter up the edit history and looks so ugly on my talk page :-) Fram (talk) 14:50, 16 January 2013 (UTC)

Hey Madman, sorry to bother you. I've had 3 editors so far tell me that their codes never delivered, and none tell me yet they got them (note: the 3 were not in the original six that failed). I was approved for HighBeam in Round 5. When I applied it appeared I would have lots more time in the future to devote to article creation etc, but that didn't eventuate. ← I've revised the existing fix to take a rather shotgun approach toward attempting to address all cases. It's 3:30 a.m. where I am and I'm beyond tired by now. If Canoe1967 or any other user wishes to take me to ANI for going to bed when the bot has not been "proven as fixed", they are more than welcome to do so and I'll continue this in the morning. False positive

Hey Madman. I just wanted to let you know that there may be an issue with the bot tagging false positives. I recently created New York Central Tugboat 16, and it placed a tag there that said that it was copied directly from another site. I already raised the issue there for the editor who will revert the bot, but the issue was that the issues that are supposedly enough to tag are just preference for sharing the same prose, and there are really only two or three things that would warrant a tag, and they are five words long. I could flip words around to make it better, but I was wondering if there has been an issue in the past where the bots that do this task have tagged such small positives as this, or is it just a small fluke that I am making too much of a big deal out of. I wouldn't say false positives are a frequent issue. The bot has some technical limitations in the kind of analysis it can do; for example, it's restricted to analyzing a (relatively) small portion of the beginning of a Web page due to memory constraints. It's also important to note that its analysis is not the same kind of analysis that Duplication Detector does; they are two different kinds of tools. In any case, I apologize for the false positive. For almost all of the limitations I've identified in the code I inherited from Coren, I have planned improvements for the next version of this task, and I have high hopes for its efficacy. False positive

False positive for article Yoo Dong-geun, the bot tagged it as a copy of [9] because they both list titles of movies and TV shows the actor has appeared in. I'm not sure that can be fixed, but the bot should at least ignore phrases that are always present in MediaWiki websites, like "retrieved from http", "navigation main page", "privacy policy about", "toolbox what links here related changes", "this page was last modified on", "jump to navigation search", since those are not part of the article's content. The bot doesn't match against MediaWiki artifacts such as the ones you list because it only checks the content of the article, not how it's rendered. False positives caused by things such as filmographies, track listings, etc. with insufficient originality to merit copyright protection are a known problem and I hope to incorporate heuristics into the next version of MadmanBot that will cut down on them. Deletion of Article Rajit Gadh

I am writing in regards to the speedy deletion of article Rajit Gadh. I saw that phrases in the article matched a URL to the bio on IEEE.org site. However the original source of the bio is from the official UCLA SMERC website. I have now added licenses from CreativeCommons and GNU for use of the bio. How do I prevent MadManBot from detecting from IEEE.org?

Unfortunately I can't whitelist IEEE.org as most of the content at that Web site is indeed copyrighted, and they're particularly vehement in protecting their copyright. But if you re-create the article, you can place the {{Text release}} template on its talk page and this should protect it from deletion. MadmanBot false positive

I see the bot's started tagging AfC submissions. It tagged Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/cscqc as a copyvio from [11], although the only content the pages have in common is some templated instructions common to all AfC submissions. I imagine this is going to arise again in future, so is it possible to work around this? Hut 8.5 12:08, 18 March 2013 (UTC)

That's odd. The normalizewikitext function removes templates before doing comparisons. And having removed templates, I'd think there would have been too few tokens (words) in the article to do any comparisons. I'll look into this; thanks. — madman 15:31, 18 March 2013 (UTC)

You know, I'm not 100% sure. I seem to recall having to search and replace something-- maybe some of the parameters didn't take a username parameter or use {{REVISIONUSER}}? Probably only a couple templates had a problem but I just copied the lot. I added {{User:MadmanBot/Csb- to regexes to see if a page was already tagged. • Changed {{La}} to {{La/x}} per wishes of an SCV editor.

Yahoo!'s results from Linkedin are sometimes confusing; I think they change URLs in some respect to be SEO-friendly, and sometimes there will be a list of results visible in a Web browser but the company profile for the #1 result in the page source. Dev Ross Page

Madman, so appreciative of the work you do...the information was not a copyright infringement, as I am the author of the IMDb article.

I am creating one already approved page in which Ms Ross is a producer. I went to IMDb for bio information and when it wasn't there, I requested it from her. She sent me info, asked if I could create something and include it on IMDb, which I did. If I had posted it on Wiki first, this wouldn't have been an issue.

I realized that there are many Wiki pages mentioning her, already, so, due to her vast contributions and awards in children's entertainment, she qualifies in having a page. On the Wiki page, I went further than just her bio and connected links, entered the dates of awards, connected the citations proving the information for the Emmy, PBS ACT, Humanatis, etc. awards. I hadn't finished with everything, due to time constraints, and saved an "article" that is a stub, but complete in informational purposes. Unfortunately, as I was responding to yet, another, editor, and adding in additional information, a third editor deleted my page and I did not have the most recent additions saved anywhere else.

I did create a talk page, after your alert, to let anyone else know that the information and document was my own writing, but that did not seem to deter the administrator, whose talk page shows she is deleting a lot of pages without review and she admits to being new. Quite frustrating as Dev is already mentioned in many Wiki articles and I was writing this page so that they could all reference her, as well as allow me to reference Dev in my article, keeping it from being "an orphan".

Fireball (liqueur)

Hello, Madman! Please help! We are the brand owners of Fireball, which is NOT a liqueur, but a cinnamon flavored Canadian whisky. We recently created the page "Fireball Cinnamon Whisky" and posted the correct, current information on the product, and posted a redirect on the "Fireball (liqueur)" page to the FCW page. However, we really need the "Fireball (liqueur)" page to be removed altogether. Can you do that, or let me know how I can do that? Looking into this. I think the MadmanBot tag is a false positive, so I'm going to remove it. I don't think removing Fireball (liqueur) as a redirect is necessary. It's existed at that location for a year and a half so some people are going to be directed there, and they're going to be redirected to the correct article. Is that really a problem? I think we'll need to rename Fireball Cinnamon Whisky though; doesn't really meet our manual of style guidelines. Perhaps Fireball (whisky)? If there was something wrong with the content of the "Fireball (liqueur)" article, the content of that article should have been improved instead of creating a new completely-redundant article about the same product. Moreover, User:Ccharters is an account of an employee of the company, and should not be creating articles written to promote the company's products or point of view. The product is not whisky, since whisky should not be something that contains sweeteners and flavouring. I suggest to look up the definition of whisky and the definition of liqueur and decide for yourself whether the product is whisky or a liqueur. In any case, the content issue should be discussed and resolved at Talk:Fireball (liqueur), not by creating a new article. At the moment I am not approved to make modifications to the bot's source; I hope to gain approval for changes, including heuristics like the one you suggest, sometime this month. In the meantime, the bot does have a list of Wikipedia mirrors that it will exclude from detection; unfortunately the Native American Encyclopedia cannot be added to this list because its articles come from a number of sources depending on the article, and not just Wikipedia.
