Hello MaronitePride, and welcome to Wikipedia. While we appreciate your contributing to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from your sources to avoid copyright or plagiarism issues here.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and a cited source. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. (There is a college-level introduction to paraphrase, with examples, hosted by the Online Writing Lab of Purdue.) Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • Our primary policy on using copyrighted content is Wikipedia:Copyrights. You may also want to review Wikipedia:Copy-paste.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. However, there are steps that must be taken to verify that license before you do. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • In very rare cases (that is, for sources that are public domain or compatibly licensed), it may be possible to include greater portions of a source text. However, please seek help at the help desk before adding such content to the article. 99.9% of sources may not be added in this way, so it is necessary to seek confirmation first. If you do confirm that a source is public domain or compatibly licensed, you will still need to provide full attribution; see Wikipedia:Plagiarism for the steps you need to follow.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you can, but please follow the steps in Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. Dougweller (talk) 21:48, 16 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Please read the bit about closeparaphrase carefully. You could have quoted the Encyclopedia of the Peoples of Africa and the Middle East, saying "According to the Encyclopedia of the Peoples of Africa and the Middle East, "the Lebanese...." Dougweller (talk) 21:49, 16 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I'll make use of your suggestion for "According to the Encyclopedia of the Peoples of Africa and the Middle East, "the Lebanese....". Thanks again and have a good day. MaronitePride (talk) 02:11, 19 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Edits on Lebanese Druze

edit

You kept making edits saying that Lebanese Druze are Muslims without any citations and ignoring the ones that I provided showing that Druze are not Muslims.

Your most recent edit doesn't even make sense.

"fasting during the month of Ramadan and making a pilgrimage to Mecca. Thus, they are not regarded by Muslims as Islamic. Thus, they are not regarded by Muslims as Islamic"

Druze do not fast during Ramadan or do Hajj. Yet you then changed the opening statement to say that Druze are Muslims which is contradictory. Who regards Druze as Muslims? The citations I provided clearly stated that Druze are not Muslims. Majority of Muslims do not consider Druze to be Muslims and the majority of Druze do not consider themselves to be Muslims.

--HamzaWahabi (talk) 17:39, 14 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Yes you are right the Lebanese constitution does regard Druze to be Muslims. Though Druze have tried to get it recognized as separate and it failed under other periods. Israeli Druze however were able to get recognition as a separate community. https://books.google.com/books?id=Qo-ZswqtGG4C&pg=PA90&dq=Druze+israel+separate+1957&hl=en&sa=X&ei=T1ZXVamuEsOjsAXxiIGwBg&ved=0CC4Q6AEwAw#v=onepage&q=Druzes%20were%20recognized%20as%20a%20seperate&f=false

However most Muslims Sunni and Shias do not consider Druze to be Muslims https://books.google.com/books?id=w2rc0RI7EqYC&pg=PA18&lpg=PA18&dq=Druze+are+not+muslim&source=bl&ots=grRrOhbC8D&sig=ZhJPwyBYRlUAzv6qbltxUBFvtQo&hl=en&sa=X&ei=7FdXVbiQBcu9sAXAjIGoBg&ved=0CCAQ6AEwATgU#v=onepage&q=Sunnis%20and%20Shia%20alike%20regard&f=false

Many Islamic scholars have stated Druze are not Muslims throughout history https://books.google.com/books?id=xcPwGmYwCKUC&pg=PA116&lpg=PA116&dq=Druze+not+muslim+Majallat+al-Buhooth+al-Islamiyyah&source=bl&ots=MUhqe082-d&sig=P0IZ4WJNS0-BWk9PnJkZBE9x0xw&hl=en&sa=X&ei=UFhXVfiCFciosAW1yYCoBg&ved=0CCUQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q=Majallat%20al-Buhooth%20al-Islamiyyah&f=false

My source reads the following: "The Druze do not:- practice recitation of the creed, reciting prayers five times a day, wed to multiple wives, fasting during the month of Ramadan and making a pilgrimage to Mecca. Thus, they are not regarded by Muslims as Islamic." Druze DO NOT fast during ramadan or do hajj. You excluded the beginning of the of the sentence.

Category:Kurdish geography

edit

Hello - I have a question regarding Category:Kurdish geography, which you created recently: Were you aware that there was already a Category:Geography of Kurdistan? Do we really need two separate categories that seem to cover the same subject area? Is there a compelling reason not to merge the new category into the older one? (which also uses the standard naming convention for geography sub-cats). Regards, Cgingold (talk) 04:28, 22 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

You're quite welcome. I suspected as much, but wanted to be sure about it before proceeding. Thanks for your reply. :) Cgingold (talk) 10:13, 24 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Assyrians/Arameans

edit

Having looked back at your talk page history I can tell you're familiar with the topic of the ethnic identity of Syriac Christians. Furthermore, I've noticed you have recently altered various articles and created several categories that suggest a pro-Aramean identity bias. This leads me of course to your talk page as I would like to discuss this with you rather than simply undo your edits so to prevent any future disagreements.

Wikipedia maintains that Assyrian people is to cover all those who identify as Aramean, Assyrian, Chaldean, Syriac or Syrian. Therefore, your edits that suggest a modern Aramean people rather than regional identity is contrary to what is commonly accepted and hindering efforts to organise Wikipedia. I hope that we can solve this issue and prevent any further POV edits. Mugsalot (talk) 16:34, 30 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

In solving an issue, it is far easier to discuss than to simply edit war. If you were to look at the Assyrian people article you would see that Aramean identity is part of the wider Assyrian people, and much like for self-identified Syriac people, I am hoping to move all those who are ethnically Assyrian under the one Assyrian category. This method prevents argument over whether anyone or anything relevent is Assyrian, Chaldean, Aramean or Syriac. Mugsalot (talk) 20:24, 2 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

edit

Hi Max Semenik, I am responding as you requested. What's the actual issue at stake here because to be honest, I did not get it? (All the texts that I added have a proper citation.) Could you explain it to me using a plain language. Thanks in advance. MaronitePride (talk) 16:13, 19 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

MaronitePride, the issue is that you cannot copy other people's words. That is a copyright violation even if you cite the source. You need to summarize the information in your own words; when you feel you must quote someone's exact words, it must be only a very brief quotation, in quotation marks or using the blockquote syntax, and your text must state clearly who said it - in addition to having a footnote citing the source. Please respond at the AN/I section that Max Semenik mentioned just above: here's a link. Yngvadottir (talk) 17:46, 19 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
