Missing index for Rand Paul talk pages

There is a redlink to an index of archived talk at W:Talk:Rand_Paul. In fact, two archived pages do exist, W:Talk:Rand_Paul/Archive_1 and W:Talk:Rand_Paul/Archive_2. This may be connected with a mysterious (to me) message on this page: "00:28:51 01 November 2010: Not writing to Talk:Rand Paul/Archive index as I cannot find permission (sourced from: Talk:Rand Paul) 71.244.119.177 (talk)"

If you are not the right person to ask for help with this, can you help me find the right person to ask? Thanks! betsythedevine (talk) 01:19, 1 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

The archive index page, Talk:Rand Paul/Archive index, needed to be manually created, as per User:HBC Archive Indexerbot. I've done that, so the bot should run sometime in the next day, creating the actual index.

Thank you very much. It was a blank page yesterday but today, as you predicted, it is populated. And I learned something new, which is always good. betsythedevine (talk) 17:07, 2 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Archiving on Bristol Palin

Hello Misza13. I do not mean to be rude or pushy, but there quite a few posts that need to be archived on Bristol Palin's talk page. Most of them haven't been commented on in a few months. I just wanted to let you know so hopefully you can archive them soon. Thanks Again! Whitestorm13 (talk) 02:28, 3 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hello Whitestorm13. If you view the page source, you will see that 'minthreadsleft' is set to 10, which tells MiszaBot not to archive unless there are more than 10 threads. The table of contents shows that there are just 11 threads at present. You should expect that the oldest thread will probably get archived in the near future. Since the whole page is only 20,400 bytes there is surely not much urgency for archiving at present. EdJohnston (talk) 03:04, 3 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
Keep in mind also that minthreadstoarchive is by default set at 2, so until there are 12 threads, the oldest won't be archived. –xenotalk 12:38, 3 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Wikinews Importer Bot date format

Now that date linking such as November 3 is no longer the way things are done here on Wikipedia, would you be minded to update the bot's coding so that it didn't automatically link dates when importing from Wikinews? It's not the most important change in the world, as the bot still works perfectly well outputting linked dates, but it struck me as a bit of a reminder of a past era... counter=4

Please could the sample configuration say "counter = 1" not "counter = 4", so that idiots like me don't begin archiving into file 4? Do you have any suggestions for fixing up the archiving at Talk:List of Sonny With a Chance episodes? -- John of Reading (talk) 09:05, 4 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

I've moved archive 4 to 2 and 5 to 3 and fixed the config. Should be all set. Instructions updated as well. –xenotalk 13:29, 4 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thank you! Next time... -- John of Reading (talk) 16:21, 4 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

unwanted action on review

Bot archived peer review for EU for which I got no response, is that normal? I though reviews should be archived only when are closed. Petrb (talk) 10:08, 4 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

MiszaBot doesn't know what the thread is about, just that the latest timestamp is old enough to qualify for archiving. You should feel free to cut and paste it from the archvies and use {{subst:DNAU|50}} to keep it there for at least 50 more days. –xenotalk 13:32, 4 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

"(leaving the four most recent)"

Hi! Regarding the User talk bot: So the four most recent threads are not archived on purpose? And I was wondering why months old stuff remains. How can proper archiving by date be enforced? Also, I'd like to have some template etc. to get a thread archived asap, rather than the DNAU one that delays archiving. -- Matthead  Discuß   17:05, 4 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Just set the minthreadsleft parameter to 0, and the bot will (eventually) wipe your page bare.
If there's a thread you want to get rid of without waiting for it to expire, you can archive it manually.
—WWoods (talk) 19:39, 4 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, I'll try 1 for now.-- Matthead  Discuß   01:26, 5 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Modifications needing to be checked upon

I have fixed some erroneous archivings and also modified the config parameters to reflect this at Talk:2010 Qur'an-burning controversy. I would appreciate if someone checked to see if this is done satisfactorily. __meco (talk) 16:46, 13 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Adding MiszaBot to a template

Hi. Is it possible to add User:MiszaBot/config to a template and then transclude the template at the page where I want MiszaBot to archive? Or does User:MiszaBot/config have to be transcluded directly at the page where I want it to archive? Thanks in advance! HeyMid (contributions) 15:26, 14 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

It must be transcluded directly. Миша13 23:28, 15 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

MiszaBot

Hiya :) im just wondering why the bot doesnt archive the whole page (eg other things like userboxes and templates) on a page? Sophie (Talk) 02:02, 15 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Because it would make little sense to put the invariant part of the page in an archive. Thus, only proper threads are ever moved. Миша13 23:30, 15 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

MiszaBot

Im sure you must be tired of dealing with issues like this so i apologize, unfortunately the bot is not working for me. It worked once on the 31st and started it at Archive 04. I was like WTH so i moved it to talk page 01. After that the bot isnt working for me. Any idea how to correct this? Thanks alot. - (CK)Lakeshade - talk2me - 04:11, 17 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Well, I've fixed the "Archive 4" thing for you, I'm not sure about it not working. --George2001hi 08:09, 17 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

MiszaBot: Archiving style

Hey Misza. Just wondering, if the original talkpage has the following threads:

1. Thread-A

2. Thread-B

3. Thread-C

4. Thread-D

And MiszaBot archives the threads A and C, and the later archives B and D, does the archive page then flows as:

1. Thread-A

2. Thread-C

3. Thread-B

4. Thread-D

Or does MiszaBot automatically detect the original thread order before archiving, and archives in the original order? It would be cool of this could be mentioned in the ArchiveHowTo page or any other related page. Rehman 09:59, 19 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

It just appends newly-archived sections to the bottom of the page: A-C-B-D. So they're roughly ordered by the age of the last post, not the first.
—WWoods (talk) 17:52, 19 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
Is there a reason why MiszaBot can't detect A-B-C-D and archive it as such? Maybe detect the dates from posts and archive it in between the appropriate dates; just like how it does to detect posts older than a given date? Rehman 01:57, 20 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
This would take work, and it's unclear what the benefit would be. Suppose a discussion at 'B' runs much longer than the discussion for the entries A, C, D. Then you want A, C, D to be archived first, and B to be stuffed back in the middle of the archive when it finishes? What if A, C and D are in an archive that is already full? EdJohnston (talk) 18:00, 20 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
The benefit is mainly towards those articles the are on its way to GA, FA, FL, or any other big "expansion", where many different discussions exist at its talkpage; all in one flow, relating to one another. Going in A-B-C-D basically helps to keep the topics and "flow" together. Got what I'm trying to say?

The full archive issue is a good question though; I don't really know a way around that. Perhaps there could be an opt-in where the bot would:

1. Archive A, C, D

2. When B is done, archive it in between A and C

3. Move the latter discussion of the filled archive to the next archive page.

Of course there'll be work, as with any other change, but I think this would help a lot. You think thats possible? Rehman 04:37, 21 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

How do you propose I find where to insert the old thread? Assume A, C and D went to /Archive 102, B was active for a long time, and when "its time came", we were already archiving to /Archive 113. Surely, you can't expect the bot to scan old archives for the date? Especially since the archive naming scheme might've changed along the way?
But let's say we do. And we indeed found /Archive 102 and try to insert there - causing an archive overflow - so, it neeeds to move the excess threads to /Archive 103 - which overflows as well - etc. potentially all the way to the current archive, which probably still has free space. The result is, we edited 12 archive pages to insert one thread.
OK, let's ignore archive overflow. But what's the point of maxarchivesize, then, if we're just ignoring it?
And the bottom line is, I have discontinued further development of the bot (I'm just operating it) due to lack of time. Миша13 15:11, 22 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yes, unfortunately your points makes good sense. :( Good to see a solution to this one day though. Thanks for all your time, everyone. Kind regards. Rehman 04:07, 23 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Bot not working for me

Hello, I am Anirudh Emani. I have set up automated archiving for my talk page recently. As time passed, i realized the bot is not archiving my page. I think i have made a mistake in using the template. Kindly check. --Anirudh Emani (talk) 13:22, 25 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

I fixed it. I also increased the max archive size from 25 to 75k, since otherwise you're going to have a sprawling set of archives. –xenotalk 14:41, 25 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thank you! It works perfectly now. --Anirudh Emani (talk) 13:49, 26 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
