MiszaBot is blocked

Per Special:Contributions/MiszaBot MiszaBot has been blocked for three weeks. The administrator who did this left a message at /Archives/2011/10#Malfunctioning? but apparently the issue has not been researched and resolved. --Marc Kupper|talk 06:22, 3 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Archiving bot - default values

Thank you for the good work.

One question: is there a default value for "maxarchivesize"? It's not clear to me from the article whether I need to set this to my preferred value, or if there is e.g. 256k used as default. Thank you. --Chire (talk) 07:02, 4 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Without a maxarchivesize, your archive will grow indefinitely so set it to your preference. 150-200K are common.

Archive user sub pages?

Would it be possible to enable the bot to archive User subpages? WP:TW now has the option of saving logs of CSDs and PRODs - these pages can get rather long too quickly (and it seems to me to get slower as the log gets bigger) - e.g. User:Ronhjones/CSD log - every entry is time/date stamped so I think the bot should work well.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 23:30, 6 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure this will work correctly but I'm willing to help try. Left a note for you on your talk page.

Nikola Tesla

Hi. Though I know the general rule for archiving is to do with how old the discussion is, could you pop over to Nikola Tesla discussion page and consider archiving at least the older half of the posts? With the discussions about Tesla's nationality it is getting hard to read/post there. Many thanks! Djathinkimacowboy 17:00, 9 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

The bot is blocked, and its operator has not edited since May. You can archive it manually easily enough, see WP:ARCHIVE. Beeblebrox (talk) 22:04, 9 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
No...one of the Miszabots is blocked but there are several and the one that would work for article talk pages works fine. I'll take a look.

The bot worked yesterday but the length was 120 days which I have shortened to 30 to help.

Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Ireland Collaboration

Can anyone else see why the bot isn't working on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Ireland Collaboration?
—WWoods (talk) 16:28, 20 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

I'll try.

It worked. I have moved the threads afterward to consolidate archive 29 and reset the counter to that number. If it doesn't work then there is something wrong with that target page. The bot may not like the {{cot}} & {{cob}} templates in use on that page.
⋙–Berean–Hunter—► 14:57, 21 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! Target, huh; don't think I've heard of that before. —WWoods (talk) 16:24, 21 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Talk:Paragliding

Here's another puzzler: Why hasn't the first section on Talk:Paragliding been archived. The bot is working, but it keeps skipping that one.

Not everything needs to be archived

In a low-activity talk page such as Talk:Pacific Ocean, I don't see the point of archiving discussions, like was done here: [1]

1. The page is not too large, or the thread too long. 2. It is not difficult to find threads, as there was a total of only 8 topics. 3. Threads with no signature and no date were left alone, and some of these are from 2006 or earlier. 4. One thread which had its last signed post in 2006 was left untouched.

Is it really necessary to archive talk pages this short? Ufwuct (talk) 20:29, 22 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Well, this is controlled by the settings on the page. The bot did leave the correct number of sections. Also the bot does not archive any sections that have no dates or bad dates since it can not be sure that those sections should be archived. So your issue seems to be that too few current sections are left because of the bad dated ones. I'll manually archive the old ones which anyone can do. Importing news

Do you know if it's possible for a bot to import news (headlines w/ links) from sites other than wikinews:? I'd like to have automatically-updating news for Portal:Iowa, as discussed here, but the portal's current source, Wikinews (currently imported via your bot), has very little on Iowa, so I was wondering if you know of a way to import news from another source. --Philosopher Let us reason together. 22:34, 23 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Ireland Collaboration

Any idea what is stopping the archiving of Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Ireland Collaboration ? Mtking (edits) 21:18, 27 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

I believe the hat templates used by Moxy in archive 29 may be the thing that the bot didn't like. It is working again after the archive number was incremented.

Making archives obvious to the casual reader

Is it possible for the bot to leave something on the talk page that clearly notifies readers where the archive is? I notice for instance that Erhard Seminars Training's talk archives have been moved by this bot to Talk:Erhard Seminars Training/Archive 2, but I was only able to figure that out because I'm a relatively sophisticated Wikipedia user and spent some time drilling into the talk page history trying to figure out why the page was so empty. To a casual user it would appear that there's almost no discussion. (I did think of editing the talk page to add a link to the archive, but I assume the bot would just archive that link, too.) I question the utility of this, at least for this particular page, and I'm tempted to remove the bot template and copy all the archives back to the main talk page. Thoughts? Chronodm (talk) 23:54, 29 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

The archives had links to them in the talk page headers but I have added an archive box which makes it easier to see. This is something that needs to be done by a human as there are many different templates/presentations for this.
