To answer your query, I think this breakout makes sense, and have said so in the AfD. Will have to look at the political one more closely. FYI, Tenacious D Fan has been on a deleting rampage of every music article he can find that isn't for a main article bio, discography, album, or single. Basie again

Dear Gareth,
The final discography you found for Basie was so good that it hardly seems worth setting up a whole lot of WP pages to duplicate all their entries, so I rather lost heart as I was copying down info from my collection but then found it was all online anyway. I'm glad that you were not involved in any of the Eastern European gang fights, however I can assure you that they are a regular occurance that I have witnessed on more than one occasion. I'm sure if you were interested North Finchley police would also confirm this account where more than one person was hit over the head with a broken bottle, and pool cue and a large amount of damage was caused to the bar area following an altercation over the fruit machines involving 20+ Eastern European men.

redirects from different capitalisation

Just a FYI: You recently created a redirect at Michael phelps. Such redirects, while absolutely harmless, are technically unnecessary as MediaWiki automatically redirects between pages with uniform initial capitalisation, i.e. All Initial Caps <-> All initial caps (the first letter of the article title is of course always capitalized for technical reasons). user:Everyme 22:47, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

New topic (Track listing) - Hi Gareth. I saw your question on my talk page and thought I'd respond here. I started to investigate the original track order for The Astaire Story (LP 1 side A, side B, LP 2 side A, side B,... etc.) and put together a revised 'track listing' section draft into a sandbox page - but I wasn't necessarily planning to update the article anytime soon - if ever. In general, I (personally) like to see LP side info for tracks on albums released in the pre-CD era (see also WP:albums, "...Albums originally released primarily on vinyl or cassette should similarly list the tracks of each side separately under sub-headings named "Side one" and "Side two...") but it's not particularly pressing. Also, I was a bit 'stumped' while investigating the final two tracks, "The Astaire Blues" and "The Second Astaire Blues". I'm guessing that these tracks appear on the CD release but not (?) on the original 4LP set??? I was going to try to find some info / sources that cleared up my confusion about that before doing anything - but I may not get back to this anytime soon. Also - although I generally prefer the LP side info be displayed, I also worry it sometimes adds a lot of "clutter" to the track listing section so I'm sometimes a bit ambivalent about adding this info. I ended up doing a lot more than I planned on this article. Once I started investigating the release history I ended up learning some interesting (to me) "info" that I hope is useful in the article. It may be too much (not-so-relevant?) detail but... I also added a comment to the article's discussion page about the (non) necessity of listing recent (post-2003) European releases of the "Astaire Story" material. Due to the 50 year limit on performers' / producers' copyrights in the EU for records, different European labels are re-packaging and releasing all sorts of music from the 1950's and before. I suspect it may be impractical (and not very useful?) to try to document all of these (relatively non-notable?) releases in a wikipedia article so I have not tried. I think it is perfectly acceptable to have parent categories, according to WP:PROJGUIDE, I think our closest relations would be Wikipedia:WikiProject Music genres, Wikipedia:WikiProject Jazz, and Wikipedia:WikiProject Musical Theatre. Regarding not having heard of it, just Google for "weather outside" "so delightful" (with quotes as shown) and you'll be blown away by the number of hits. But your point about "weigh a pie" is well taken -- this (when in quotes) turned up 592 hits on Google, a lot (probably not as many as the frightful weather hits) but apparently not enough to qualify it for mention in Over the rainbow. If it ever shows up there I'll come back and bug you again.  :) (Lots of movies get lots of trivia notes, how come songs are relatively trivia free? Check out the Barry Manilow one. I've always like it. One reason why Oscar's discog is good is that he's dead, and he isn't issusing a mad number of compilations that have to be created. Studio/Live/with others is the best, with original compilations like this as well. We need to work out which original albums there are pre-1956 from the bible. I was also thinking of cats and extra chronologys in the album infobox. I think albums should only have Category;Oscar Peterson/Pass/whoever/ if they are mentioned in the title or it is their album of course, but not if they are part of the back up, the same should apply to chronolgies as well. I like the Manilow one's format. I did a little work on one but got confused and trashed it to start over again. Nothing yet to show for it. I've tried to do the same with additional chronologies - that is, not include an additional unless they are in the title of the album - example Ella and Joe's albums. Recorded version information

I've always tried to put in all the information I can find on this stuff, because it helps make a case for notability and simply because it seems to be a matter of some interest. I can't always find the data on the two discographic sites I use (the former settlet.fateback.com, now 78discography.com, for the 78 era and globaldogproductions.info for the 45 era), but as much as I do find, I put in.

If it ever gets big enough to make it a separate page, is this such a terrible thing? My own feeling is that the more information that is included, the better Wikipedia becomes. -- BRG (talk) 20:13, 24 February 2009 (UTC)

I've sometimes wondered exactly what the boundaries of the Great American Songbook category include... a lot of the music I like unquestionably falls under that heading, but it's hard to really define. To repeat, no, I don't work for the BBC. All I was doing was alerting editors to the opportunity to gather genuine information to improve articles. How often do people get the chance to ask major writers (Nobel laureates, Pulitzer prize winners) about their work? If a few more articles on wikipedia were based on genuine and fresh information rather than regurgitated junk from tabloids, it (wikipedia) would be held up to less ridicule and be more useful. Also I take it that people who write articles about books would perhaps be interested in hearing, perhaps going to see, perhaps asking questions of their authors and would therefore not mind too much if the opportunity is brought to their notice. I don't believe you. The vast majority of articles you seem to edit involve alerting people to World Book Club, or the availibity of its podcast, the presenter of WBC, or the programme itself. With respect, I altered the paras to make it readable from the previous collection of nonsequiturs. To say that you had "deleted some puff", well don't shoot the messenger! Its there in the sources and to say that "this is an article about the road, not the image" if you read the sources fully, you will see that the image IS the road. It’s like writing that Buckingham Palace is built on a roundabout without mentioning who lives there. And as for who does lives in the Avenue, it is VERY well documented, but I have not mentioned which houses they live in, unlike some of the sources. It's like before. If any singer says the word "Summertime", somehow it's on the list. I don't believe that every version is equal in importance. Considering that it might be the most recorded song of all time, is it right that this page might feature over 1,500 versions? PS - I noticed you added Super Rich to the Rich discography list. I see Super Rich was already listed under notable compilation albums in that article. I did a quick check and it appears Super Rich is a 6 track compilation (of 3 tracks each) from two previously released Norgran / Verve albums, The Swinging Buddy Rich (Norgran MGV 8142) and Blues Caravan (Verve V6 8425). I don't think it is worthless trivia that a former Prime Minister has contacted the police because he believes his phone was illegally hacked. But I understand your reasons for removing it, and support that. I am adding it to the other articles because I believe this is such a notaable story. I appreciate your comments, imo - when gordon was prime minister so much stuff was being leaked by unnamed sources that you can hardly blame him for asking, "was I hacked, and if so who was doing it" bit imo its only going to be worth adding as a long term encyclopedic biographical fact if there is anything in it - otherwise you have to go back and add - in 2010 GBrown thought his phone was being hacked and in 2011 the police said it wasn't. .. not of any value as a noteworthy thing..imo...if it has been hacked and details come out of the effects it had on his premiership or whatever then, yes. "Come Running to Me"

Have you had a chance to listen to "Come Running to Me" on The Gate? The overdubs worked well here, and it makes me think that backup singers would be a welcome addition for at least one tour. I mean, can you imagine Bob Marley without the I Threes? Yeah, it's probably not going to happen anytime soon, but it could really mix things up a bit. What do you think? It's would be great, he seems to be throwing everything at the wall right now. I saw him at Ronnies last year with the standard trio, and seeing him next month with a harmonica player and jazz orchestra, but these always seem the allowed limits of jazz vocal set-up. Kurt + Take 6. So many notes! I can't find anything on utube of him with the Basie Band last year, tht looked intriguing. Faberge

Hi! I remember you was interested in Faberge eggs. I was at Moscow exhibition today and made few pictures of it (see the subcategories) - maybe you'll have some fun to use them. Also I would like to ask something - can you check my last edits in Constellation (Fabergé egg) for grammar errors, please? There is a problem with this egg - the real one, unfinished, is in the state museum, but one Russian oligarch bought the finished fake with diamonds. And he made a big PR to write everywhere he owns the real one - in Ru-wiki we somehow are keeping NPOV, but it is hard: his PR-writers are very active. As I can see, here, in en-wiki, nobody looks after them, and they are happy to read he's the best and owns the best Faberge collection in the world, ho-ho. Here is the list of articles it better to clean and watch:

Hello Gareth, Thanks for the great work on Ella (and many others!) I even discovered that I was missing one Ella album! Jazz at Santa Monica Civic '72 (Don't know how I missed that.... have been collecting Ella for about 15 years) - I agree that the discography page is easier to read as it is (per recording company releases) I am not sure what the norm is with this situation, but the chronology is possibly hard to understand (for a casual reader). Its demise is one of the reasons I almost completely have stopped editing articles on Wiki, too many trolls and silly admins. Al Fayed Profile

Hi Gareth, I did a lot of research on Al Fayed for my thesis, and lots of the references that are used in his Wikipedia BLP aren't accurate. I changed the order because they weren't chronological, neutralised the tone and replaced some of the inaccurate references with reliable ones. We should go through the points one by one. By "neutralizing the tone" you also happened to remove any incident with negative connotations. When I rewrote the article I strove to be neutral, and avoided the xenophobic and sensationalist critiques of Fayed that abound online. The article is impeccably sourced, depending on a well received biography by Tom Bower, a Vanity Fair profile by Maureen Orth, and news sources from BBC News Online, The Times, The Daily Telegraph, The Guardian and The Independent. Ok, first point - the British naturalisation/passport is too detailed for a BLP, and it isn't right. Al Fayed applied to become a British subject twice (once in 1994 and once in 1999); two application's isn't really a 'quest for British citizenship'. This is what I mean about the tone problem. It's exaggerated to the negative. The fact that some MPs believed the initial decision not to grant Al Fayed's application was ‘motivated by political spite and malice’ [ref early day motion 737] and the fact that Al Fayed's brother's application was approved in 1999, but Al Fayed's was refused, (which backs up what these MPs said) should really be included.

The content says the Fayed brothers application for British citizenship was rejected in December 1993 - it wasn't rejected until 1995. It also says in 1997 the Fayeds' citizenship request was considered again,[85] but rejected in May 1999 - as mentioned above, Al Fayed's brother's application was granted, Al Fayed's was refused...Latika1976 (talk) 21:09, 17 October 2011 (UTC)

I believe even a single application forms part of a "quest for British citizenship". I can see nothing negative in desiring to become a British citizen. I have now removed this from the "controversial" part of the lead section. Thanks for the citation on his brothers successful citizenship application. I understood from You're Fayed that Ali Al-Fayed had obtained citizenship by marriage, but I couldn't find a cite for this. [4] (6mins in)

I am reluctant to quote from EDM's. Leaving aside Al-Fayed's lobbying of MP's, there are numerous EDM's both for and against Al-Fayed, and I do not wish to highlight one opinion at the expense of another. His citizenship request was rejected in December 1993, this is described on page 330 of Bower's biography, this rejection was not made public until February 1995 (Bower 360). Thanks for the YT clip - it reminded me - there's a considerable section on Princess Diana in Al Fayed's biography, some of which would make more sense to be appear on her page, rather than on Al Fayed's; shouldn't it include Al Fayed's son's name in the section heading, because he lost his son - had Dodi not been with the Princess that night, that entire section would not need to exist.

I fully appreciate and agree with your view that one opinion should not be highlighted at the expense of another; there are plenty of favourable articles (from decent sources) about Al Fayed, but they aren't cited in his BLP; instead negative viewpoints are used. Over half the references come from the same person - writer, Tom Bower - who the Guardian described as portraying Al Fayed as a 'vindictive, sexually- obsessed bully'. Isn't this highlighting one opinion at the expense of others? I'm unconvinced by Bower's narrative - much of it appears to be inaccurate - saying that Al Fayed was refused naturalisation in 1993 is an example of this...

Al Fayed's application was made in 1994, which makes it impossible for it to have been rejected in 1993. It was rejected in 1995. This should help clarify: [6]. It's also evidenced by the date of the EDM.

Re: Straw's reference to 'bribing' - this, to me, backs up what was said in the EDM, that some had a "vendetta" against Al Fayed. It was legal to pay MPs to ask questions in Parliament; the crime lay with the MPs who failed to declare the fees they had been paid. Al Fayed exposed this (some articles referred to him as a "hero" for doing so), and this led to a reform in the constitution. [7].

Re: Safe Deposit Boxes - (I think it's Safe Deposit, not Safety Deposit - [www.harrods.com/goldbullion] (fourth para). Admitting liability is one thing (as owner of Harrods, he was liable), stealing is another. If Al Fayed had stolen from a Harrods safe deposit box, he would have been prosecuted, but he wasn't. [8].

I also agree that there is nothing negative about wishing to receive naturalisation, but in context, 'quest' is not a neutral term. It suggests an ongoing search, which isn't strictly true. You recently reverted my edit, citing the reason "His father was English", the category in question being "American people of British-Jewish descent". Nowhere in the article does it claim that he was Jewish, or more pertinently that his father was. I've therefore once again removed this category.
