Administrators' newsletter – July 2021
News and updates for administrators from the past month (June 2021).

- Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
- An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.
- IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.
- The community authorised COVID-19 general sanctions have been superseded by the COVID-19 discretionary sanctions following a motion at a case request. Alerts given and sanctions placed under the community authorised general sanctions are now considered alerts for and sanctions under the new discretionary sanctions.
Revision deletion of orphaned revision of 2 picture files
Hi Nthep, I am not sure if I should refer the matter to you. There are 2 replaced pictures to be hidden on 13 July 2021, but it is still available. The 2 files are File:Those Who Cross the Line.jpg and File:Great Escape (South Korea TV series) poster.jpg. Please help to do the necessary operation. Thanks. Flipchip73 (talk) 10:06, 14 July 2021 (UTC)
- @Flipchip73 There over 500 files in the category, user:DeltaQuadBot will catch up with them soon enough. Nthep (talk) 11:19, 14 July 2021 (UTC)
RFL women's super League
Hey, not sure if you've seen, but the rfl have put a statement up regarding the women's League, basically saying that the season is officially over, (clubs have officially agreed to cancel this weekends round of fixtures), with the top 5 teams in the table to compete for the grand final, and the bottom 5 to compete for the shield. L1amw90 11:35, 22 July 2021 (UTC)
- @L1amw90 saw the news but not done anything about it yet- the world cup news has been a bit more frantic. Nthep (talk) 14:32, 22 July 2021 (UTC)
Vandal assistance request
Hi pal, got a user (User:Hbafc92) vandalising Wigan Warriors to apparently "wind up a friend" according to his reply to my request for him to stop on his talk page. I've issued an official warning and suggested that he faces a block if he fails to comply. Could you keep an eye on the situation please? Cheers c87d98b10 15:57, 24 July 2021 (UTC)
- He has vandalisd the article again following the warning. c87d98b10 15:59, 24 July 2021 (UTC)

August 2021
Hello, I'm Some Dude From North Carolina. I wanted to let you know that one or more of your recent contributions to File:The Card Counter (2021) film poster.jpg have been undone because they did not appear constructive. If you would like to experiment, please use your sandbox. If you have any questions, you can ask for assistance at the Teahouse. Thanks. Some Dude From North Carolina (talk) 14:59, 14 August 2021 (UTC)
- @Some Dude From North Carolina Please read WP:IMAGERES for the guideline on image sizes for non-free images. The last revision you made at 510 × 755 put this image way over that recommendation. Nthep (talk) 15:05, 14 August 2021 (UTC)
- A bot will automatically fix this. Uploading the wrong poster, however, is considered vandalism. Some Dude From North Carolina (talk) 15:06, 14 August 2021 (UTC)
- @Some Dude From North Carolina Actually I reverted to the version the bot uploaded, so not a wrong version at all. Not sure where you get the idea it was a totally different poster from. Nthep (talk) 15:10, 14 August 2021 (UTC)
- You can notice that the original poster was uploaded in a square format and the bot made it smaller. I corrected this by uploading the standard and official rectangular poster with the edit summary "fixing dimensions", which a bot would reduce in a few days. You reverted this back into the incorrect square format, so I left you a message. Some Dude From North Carolina (talk) 15:14, 14 August 2021 (UTC)
- "Fixing dimensions" could mean what you say or equally "I just want to make this bigger" and believe me there are a lot of uploads like that by people who don't get that non-free images need to be kept to a deliberately low resolution. If your edit summary had said "fixing aspect ratio" or something I'd just have tagged it for the bot to fix but as it was it looked to me like a deliberate edit to go back to a bigger version. Either way, a bot will remove the old version in 7 days or more likely it will crop up in the category for those needing a human check and someone will delete it. Nthep (talk) 15:30, 14 August 2021 (UTC)
- I'll keep the first note in mind. Some Dude From North Carolina (talk) 15:46, 14 August 2021 (UTC)
- ok, thanks for the discussion. Nthep (talk) 15:47, 14 August 2021 (UTC)

Userscript for moving files
I noticed you move files manually and update the filenames in articles manually as well. As updating filenames is a drag I created LuckyRename some time ago, you may want to give it a try. — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 12:47, 20 August 2021 (UTC)

File:Rashford Mural.jpg
This mural is on a public wall in the main street. It has been pictured in many newspapers and other publications hundreds of times. Rathfelder (talk) 11:30, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Rathfelder Don't doubt that but the mural itself is a copyrighted work and is not covered by section 62 of the Copyright Act 1988 as it is a 2D graphic work (see c:Commons:Copyright_rules_by_territory/United_Kingdom#Freedom_of_panorama), so while you can licence your photo as you wish (and have done), the mural itself needs a fair use rationale adding. Nthep (talk) 11:53, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
- But Mural of Marcus Rashford is not my article. The authors of that have to produce the fair use rationale, dont they? Rathfelder (talk) 11:57, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Rathfelder you've uploaded an image of a non-free item, it's your responsibility to add a fair use rationale. Nthep (talk) 12:06, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
- But I havent used it. It's been moved from where I used it. I'm only responsible for my photo. I cant explain other people's use of it. Rathfelder (talk) 12:09, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Rathfelder Correct, you are responsible for the photo. Your photo is of a non-free work of art, therefore it is your responsibility to ensure that the upload meets Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria (WP:NFCC), see the Implementation section in particular. If the image is uploaded correctly under WP:NFCC and subsequently used incorrectly that is another case, but that is not the situation with this image at the moment. Nthep (talk) 14:02, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
- Its now a photograph of the main subject of the article, but its not my article, and I didnt put it there. I upload photos, as I am regularly asked to. I'm not responsible for what other people do with them. Rathfelder (talk) 16:34, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Rathfelder No, you aren't responsible for how an image you upload is used, but as the uploader you are responsible for ensuring that images of non-free works comply with WP:NFCC. This image has never complied with those criteria, as one of the criteria is that a valid rationale forms part of the file information. If there had been an valid rationale originally but the use had changed e.g. it was being used in a different article from that originally given, that wouldn't be your problem to resolve but the lack of any rationale is your responsibility as you should have added one when you uploaded the image. Nthep (talk) 16:49, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
- It is being used in a different article, so the rationale is different, and not mine. Rathfelder (talk) 16:51, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Rathfelder So what was your original rationale? Nthep (talk) 16:57, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
- Why do you want to know? Rathfelder (talk) 17:01, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Rathfelder Because I'd like to see some sort of rationale added to this file. If you say you can't write a rationale to match the current use of the image then I'd like to know what your original rationale was and see what need amending. It's a pity the lack of rationale didn't get picked up last November but we are where we are. Nthep (talk) 17:06, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
- Well the rationale now is pretty obvious.Rathfelder (talk) 17:10, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
- @RathfelderThen there shouldn't be a problem adding one. If you don't want to take responsibility for the image you uploaded by adding a rationale as you should have done last November, that's your choice. I'm not bothered who adds a rationale to the image but if it doesn't get done in the next 7 days it will be deleted. Nthep (talk) 17:16, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
- You could have done it yourself. You are just making work for other people. Rathfelder (talk) 17:21, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Rathfelder so why didn't you do it last November? Nthep (talk) 17:22, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
- Because I dont accept your account of English copyright law. Rathfelder (talk) 17:24, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Rathfelder If you think it is a free image and want to leave it be that's your choice. I don't think it is a free image and it needs a fair-use rationale adding. Nthep (talk) 17:37, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
- But it is for those who are now using it to add, not me. Rathfelder (talk) 17:38, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
- Note posted at Talk:Mural of Marcus Rashford. Nthep (talk) 18:20, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
