1984 Southland floods

Hi Panamitsu, I have made good progress with the Draft:1984 Southland floods article. Have archived the references and incorporated the NIWA source into the article. The article now has an introduction section. I also split the impact section into an aftermath section. Is it ready to move into mainspace? Do you think we could put it on Did you know? I'm struggling to find something interesting about this article.

I know I said before we started that something that there was interesting about it, but it turned out I was confusing it was another event. For some reason I thought it involved a dam overflowing or almost overflowing, but it looks like that might've been the Otago floods of 1863 or the 2004 Bay of Plenty floods. ―Panamitsu (talk) 04:58, 13 November 2024 (UTC)

I know something interesting about it (in the DYK sense) but unfortunately I don't think it's documented anywhere (and "the civil defence guys thought it was a real crack up" doesn't constitute a reliable source). Apparently one of the guys "rescued" from a roof didn't actually need rescued - because of the fine weather the day after he was up on a roof painting it and was rather indignant about being "rescued". Otherwise one of the more iconic images (which, sadly, is almost certainly unavailable with a compatible licence) is of an unusual "igloo" shaped house (corner of Gimblett and Queens Drive if you're familiar with Invercargill) with only its domes visible. No, it survived the floods but was replaced by a "normal" house some time after 2010. If you are using Google Street View, click on "See more dates" (in the top left window), select the January 2010 street view image and it's largely still visible amongst the mature trees that were also on site then. It also had a vague Futuro House look to it. I think it was concrete? It would have been quite new in 1984 - it's visible on this Retrolens image https://files.interpret.co.nz/Retrolens/Imagery/SN8408/Crown_8408_F_13/High.jpg (from nine months or so after the flood) but half of the subdivision it's in isn't built up yet. I'm not certain, but my guesses, working from left to right (bottom to top) would be: some sort of gyroscope to measure camera orientation; some sort of focusing tool; a clock reading almost 3:17 p.m.; a card stating which series of photographs this was.
