We Need to Talk About Kevin plot summary

Thanks for trying to write a plot summary for this film, but I'm afraid your English just isn't clear enough. I've restored the old one-sentence summary for now, until such time as either I've seen the film or someone who can write a good summary comes along.--TEHodson 03:05, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

Flashbacks show Eva's memories. That is the reason of the past tense. Also this causes that the order in which plot elements have to be written down is not obvious.--Patrick (talk) 09:08, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

I understand that, but there are lots of films that are shown in flashback, or which are non-linear. You aren't really addressing the problems. Please read up on how to write a plot summary.--TEHodson 20:48, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

I see that you are rather new to Wikipedia. Removing info without providing an alternative is not acceptable in a case like this, where there are just some minor issues such as mentioning feelings of a character, or the order in which plot items are presented in the case of flashbacks. In a discussion about which of two versions is better you can refer to a guideline, come with a version that you think is better and we can see.--Patrick (talk) 22:14, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

I am not new to Wikipedia. I've worked on many, many articles, and have gotten a couple of them to GA status. There is a note to you from an administrator on the Kevin Talk page, with more suggestions on how to fix the plot summary so that it is acceptable. I've probably written dozens of them, and re-written even more. What you've written is simply not a Plot Summary. The issues are not "minor." If you are as experienced as you imply, you know very well that when there is a dispute, it has to be resolved on the Talk page before any more work is done on the article. I've asked you questions, which you have not answered, and given you concrete suggestions, which you've ignored. The biggest problem is that you don't seem to understand that there is a problem.--TEHodson 23:19, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

The Kite Runner plot summary was edited further by me to give you another example of how to write a plot summary. I chose that article because I could see from your Contributions that you have worked on the page and therefore would be familiar with it. Plot summaries are the issue here, therefore it is very much related to the discussion. This seems like further evidence that you do not understand what the problem is nor how to handle its resolution. I would have expected you to compare the old one with the new one, so as to learn from the example.--TEHodson 23:23, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

MSU Interview

Dear Patrick,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

• Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
• Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
• All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
• All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
• The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. Template:Show data

Hi Patrick - You seem to be an expert on this very complex family of templates. I've noticed that this template (or one of the family it's connected to) seems to link certain parameter values by default. See for example, Template:Data Best, North Brabant, which shows 'Europe' linked. This is an unnecessary link which ends up propagated across articles where this family is used, but I can't see how to change it - can something be done to remove the automatic linking? Numbers on Orbits Template "clearly wrong"?

This is back in 2010, but I saw you reverted my changes to Template:Earth_orbits, in which I attempted to resolve some clear contradictions in the numbers given, namely regarding velocities and altitudes relative to Earth's surface as opposed to the core. Your comment said the edits were "clearly wrong".

I hadn't checked that page again, but as recently other editors have concluded the same thing, could you please tell me why you made such a judgement, such as whether my math was wrong? If not, I'd like to re-insert the numbers again. SamuelRiv (talk) 06:19, 29 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi Patrick,

I noticed that you created Template:Dts and I thought you might be able to help me. I am trying to get List of solar eclipses in the 21st century up on the main page. In the nomination discussion here, the concern has been raised that the "Central Duration" column is not sortable. Unfortunately, I have been unsuccessful in finding a template that will give a "00m 00s" output that is also sortable. Template:Tts is close, but it doesn't give the right output. Do you know how to create such a template or give an existing template this functionality? Do you know anyone who would be able to do so? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can make a template like Tts with two parameters (minutes and seconds, without leading zeros), with code like

Template:Do for every South Holland municipality code

There is some trouble with Template:Do for every South Holland municipality code. Two municipalities have been changed, and I have not a clue how to solve it...

• Challenge one: Graafstroom was move to Graafstroom (former municipality), leaving a disambiguation page in place
• Challenge two: Liesveld was moved to Liesveld (former municipality), also leaving a disambiguation page in place.

Both places have been merged into Molenwaard

Focus on auto-correcting edit-conflicts

Wikid77 here. This is just FYI, no action needed. I've been contacting various editors that my next major focus (now that wp:CS1 Lua cites run 13x faster) is to fix most edit-conflicts, which seems to be a decision needed by community consensus. At first I thought there was a technology limit (as if "some conflicts" impossible to solve, but no), and instead all edit-conflicts could be auto-corrected according to set rules; however, we need to set some "policy" rules for how multiple edits will be applied at the same lines in a page, so the developers can make the software resolve the edit-conflicts, by default, following those rules. For example, when 2 editors try to post a reply at the same line in a talk-page, or add after the same line in a list article, then "edit-conflict" leaves the decision to the 2nd editor, rather than auto-correct and insert the 2nd reply after the 1st reply from the prior edit. I think the developers could auto-correct all edit-conflicts, if we get consensus on the rules of order.

Background: As you know, extensive auto-correction for many edit-conflicts has existed since 2004, when re-combining separate parts of a page, such as the 1st editor changes the infobox parameters, then meanwhile 2nd editor changes a later paragraph, and the 2nd editor's paragraph is inserted with the 1st editor's infobox (conflict resolved). The next fix would be for 2 replies added after the same line, in a talk-page, or a list (etc.). However, the editor community needs to reach a consensus, so the developers would have a specific rule, to append a 2nd reply, after the 1st reply, at the same line number, which is currently treated as "edit-conflict" and extremely common in fast-moving talk-pages. I suggest to use FIFO order (first-in, first-out), so the 1st reply takes precedence over the 2nd reply, to be inserted after the 1st. The developers have already finished "90%" of the bigger, complex Edit-merge operations, and what is left is to decide the community's choice as to which order to append two replies at the same line number, such as FIFO order. Perhaps we need an RfC to decide that issue. Any thoughts yet? -Wikid77 (talk) 15:25, 21 May 2013 (UTC)
