Break character in titles in templates
Do you know why there is a gap added by using the break character in the infobox template in articles such as James Gibbons. The gap looks awkward, as if there is a line of text that is missing. It is created by adding a break character before the person's name. If it is a style that has been agreed on, we should add it to the template directly, but to my eye it looks awkward. What do you think? Is it possible it is there just to add more color to the infobox? Look at James Roosevelt Bayley for one where I removed the gap. I am sure this has been discussed already, but you would be the one to know. You can change back Bayley after you peek at it. --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 00:43, 18 July 2014 (UTC)
- @Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ): I think they're a legacy from a time before the template layout was improved. Remove them, as I just did on your former example. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:22, 18 July 2014 (UTC)

Recent software changes
- The latest version of MediaWiki (1.24wmf14) was added to test wikis and MediaWiki.org on July 17. It will be added to non-Wikipedia wikis on July 22, and to all Wikipedias on July 24 (calendar).
- CirrusSearch was removed as the primary search method from Wikimedia Commons and the Spanish (es) Wikipedia due to a high server load. The plan to enable it on the Dutch (nl), Japanese (ja), Polish (pl) and Russian (ru) Wikipedias was also postponed to a later date. [1] [2] [3]
- The tool that stores information about languages (CLDR) was updated to its latest version. You can still help translate language names into your own language so they can be used in the sidebar and other places. [4]
- Translation memory for newly translatable pages should now offer more suggestions. [5] [6]
- A tool to convert MediaWiki pages to LaTeX is now available on Tool Labs. [7]
VisualEditor news

- All windows in VisualEditor have now a new design. Main action buttons will always be located in the top bar and will use simple words rather than icons. [9]
- You can now easily open links inside the link editor, for example to see their target. [10]
- Several bugs related to the positioning of the cursor around some items (like images and references) were fixed last week. [11] [12] [13] [14] [15] [16]
Future software changes

Aristeidis Metallinos
Hi Pigsonthewing. Can you look over this article on Aristeidis Metallinos. Is it still on probation now I've added referenced citations and more specific categories? Suggest improvements? Is 'my' article still Start-Class? Simon Baddeley (talk) 13:01, 23 July 2014 (UTC)
- @Sibadd: I love the Scops Owl; I heard and saw my first in Majorca in April. I wouldn't worry about the rating - they're explained at Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Assessment, but most people don't bother to notice them. I would try, if you can, to give inline citations. Which source, for instance, says that the owl represents "a fast changing pastoral economy..."? Overall, though the article is sound and well past the minimum requirements to avoid deletion. Can you start an article on Ano Korakiana? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 13:29, 23 July 2014 (UTC)
Thanks Andy. Encouragement and food for thought. The 'fast changing pastoral economy' needs a piece about Ano Korakiana, so thanks for a push on that.Simon Baddeley (talk) 13:53, 23 July 2014 (UTC)

- No, Nikki, as an intelligent reading of the relevant diffs shows, I did no such thing. But you're still stalking my (and others') edits. How many times have I (and others) told you to stop doing that? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:21, 19 July 2014 (UTC)
- I confess that I also fell for the first impression. We know from the case that looking at a diff without context can result in strange evaluation. Do you remember that you reportedly deliberately parachuted into infobox editing disputes in such contentious areas (causing the comment "concerns me deeply"), where all you did was uncollapsing an infobox and placing it in the normal position. Nobody questioned the false evaluation (I tried at least), - that concerns me deeply. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:39, 19 July 2014 (UTC)
- Let's find out. Nikkimaria (talk) 12:18, 19 July 2014 (UTC)
- What I see: an editor who worked on the article inserted infobox material in edits such as this, and you, Andy, only formatted it? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:02, 19 July 2014 (UTC)

Infobox NHS trust
Andy, how would you like to fit {{Infobox NHS trust}}
into East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust - it's currently a real mess. Looking through Category:NHS hospital trusts, several of the others use a bespoke table in a similar manner. Several use {{Infobox Hospital}}
; unfortunately, a NHS trust may be responsible for more than one hospital. --Redrose64 (talk) 11:36, 24 July 2014 (UTC)

Richard Pine
Hi Andy. I'm having rather didactic advice from another [editor] recommending immediate removal of a citation in the article I started recently. This editor is unwilling to discuss my contention that a citation - a public domain letter from Seamus Heaney to the subject also quoted in a book review of Pine's work - is not necessarily a primary source (I do know the rules). Chris Troutman seems to imply I might even have faked the letter in question, and that I "claim" to have degrees, and referring to "resorting to a website". I have no idea what he means. I don't feel inclined to get into an argument with someone prepared to write to me in these terms. QUOTE You asked for my suggestions; I replied. If you don't want the facts don't ask for them. Obviously, you are way out of your depth. I find it sad that someone whom claims to have degrees resorts to a website to publish their thoughts. If you can't contribute according to our norms, take your ball and go home. Chris Troutman (talk) 23:44, 23 July 2014 (UTC) END So much for "Welcome to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit." Am I being overly defensive? Is there a better way to cite this letter from the Heaney estate? Simon Baddeley (talk) 07:58, 24 July 2014 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Template:Difflinks examples
A tag has been placed on Template:Difflinks examples requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion because it is an unused duplicate of another template, or a hard-coded instance of another template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.
If the template is not actually the same as the other template noted, please feel free to remove the speedy deletion tag and please consider putting a note on the template's page explaining how this one is different so as to avoid any future mistakes (<noinclude>{{substituted}}</noinclude>).
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page's talk page, where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Video formatting
Andy, I would like to add a 40 second video to Sip 'n Dip Lounge, but am not sure if that's a good idea (I have video of the piano player, "Piano Pat") I know you do the audio recording stuff, maybe you could help me out in terms of how much compression, etc. I once figured out how to export video into a commons-compatible format (with this little animation of still photos ) but I don't know if I used the best format, etc. Help? Montanabw(talk) 03:44, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
- @Montanabw: Sounds good. We need more video. You can only upload video in an open format. I've never done video converison or compression for Commons, so regrettably can't help, but you could ask at Commons:Village pump. One thing though - what music is the pianist playing? If it's out of copyright, that's OK, but if not (if it's modern) that would be an issue. I assume you have PP's permission? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 22:42, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
- It's a public location, but the song she's playing probably IS under copyright, it's Ring of Fire (song). Does that pretty much deep six it? Montanabw(talk) 22:57, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
- @Montanabw: It does. You could strip the audio (probably little point) or go back and ask her to play something out-of-copyright. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:01, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

WikiMania 2014
Andy, I was glad to meet you and give you a Wikipedia editor hat at WikiMania 2012. I will have more hats at WikiMania 2014.
I don't follow how the lightning talks are going to happen, nor how I would sign up, and I would suspect I am not the only one. I have given several 2 minute lightning talks at the NYC chapter meetings, so I know how they are done. See my Hackathon entry about WikiProject templates for something I would talk briefly about in a lightning talk.
Perhaps you can reply to me here, and also clarify or get someone else to clarify lightning talks on the WikiMania 2014 pages.--DThomsen8 (talk) 13:26, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
- It will be good to see you again. I still wear the hat! Are your referring to https://wikimania2014.wikimedia.org/wiki/Education_Pre-Conference/Lightning_Talks - this is the first I knew of that! I proposed some lightning talks a while back, but didn't think the idea had been accepted. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 14:01, 30 July 2014 (UTC)

Wikidata
I am after your advice as I believe you are experienced and knowledgeable enough to point me in the right direction. It is related to the current Persondata RfC.
On a personal level, I just want a reliable source of birth and death dates. I am currently working on a comparison of Persondata and Wikidata, see User:Periglio/Wikidata. This has already revealed a large discrepancy and I am digging deeper to find out where the problem is. It has already confirmed that there is nothing in place to keep Wikipedia and Wikidata synchronised.
Ultimately, I want to see Wikidata becoming the reliable source, which is where you come in. I have the technology to write bots that will interrogate pages, updating pages or flagging problems. I have been a Wikipedia editor since 2006, but Wikidata is new to me so I am not sure where to start. Where is a good place to introduce myself? Periglio (talk) 10:23, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
- @Periglio: Firstly, note that there is equally nothing in place to keep Wikipedia article content and Persondata synchronised. Your introduction would best be made at wikidata:Project chat, the equivalent of our Village Pumps. You might also like to sign up to Wikidata's low-traffic mailing list. See also Wikipedia:Wikidata and its talk page. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:32, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for that. In reply to your note - Persondata does have the advantage of appearing in the edit screens. It does get updated, although I am not claiming that it always kept in sync. In fact, I have detected vandalism because the vandal missed Persondata. Having said that, I have found myself agreeing with your comment on the RfC - supporting persondata removal, but temporarily retaining it until some action plan is in place. Periglio (talk) 10:50, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
- Persondata only appears in edit screens for whole page, or last-section, edits. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:54, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
George M. Church
Have redactively edited the Cleanup tag at George M. Church, otherwise ask that you not remove tags, again, given the fact that there is an ongoing Noticeboard discussion of the issues involved (which makes reference to this and the other tags). Of all of them, the Cleanup tag is most easily understood in stating the issues involved. I shortened it to be responsive to the thrust of your concern. Please do not confuse matters by removing it. Cheers. Le Prof Leprof 7272 (talk) 04:10, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
- Unsurprisingly, a discussion on a noticeboard - much less one beginning with a complaint about your editing - does not give you a licence to demand that only your version of an article may persist in the interim. I have again removed your essay from the top of the article. Please put it on the talk page, which exists for that purpose (or, if you insist, use that page to see if there is consensus to restore it). Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 09:39, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
Please leave...
The tags, and the COI, POV, and OR issues they imply, are currently under discussion at a COI Noticeboard, see here [57]. PLEASE DO NOT EDIT THE TAGS AT THE ARTICLE TOP UNTIL THAT NOTICEBOARD ARRIVES AT A COMMUNITY DECISION. THIS IS NOT ONE EDITOR'S CALL. Le Prof Leprof 7272 (talk) 00:59, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
- @Leprof 7272: See above. SHOUTING does not change this. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 06:45, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
Coordinates
Hi Pigsonthewing, I was looking at the List of Gaelic Athletic Association stadiums where I saw how you added a column for gps coordinates. A long time ago I know, but that doesn't really matter for my question. As a new wikipedian, adding coordinates seems like it would be simple but now that I look at it I can't seem to get my head around it. Considering you have experience with adding gps coordinates before and after taking a seconds glance at your (unending list of) contributions, I figured you'd be the guy to ask! Is adding coordinates as simple as getting them off google earth or walking out to the place with gps then editing the page with the coordinates you got? But each of the coordinates link to a website called 'Geohack' Do I need to create a page here first for the coordinates before putting them on wikipedia? I would be extremely grateful if you could explain this to me. Thank you so much! The Free Editor Anyone Can Cite (talk) 02:00, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
- @The Free Editor Anyone Can Cite: The geohack page is generated automatically. Please see WP:GEOCODE. Let me know if you have further questions. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 07:23, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
