Where to report shared account?

{{helpme}} The user pages and some edit summaries of Psy3330 W10 (talk · contribs) suggest that this is a shared account for some educational assignment. Per WP:NOSHARE, user accounts can only represent individuals and shared accounts should be blocked. How do I report such a user account to the administrators? OK - so, yes, obviously it is being used by many people. Did you see User:Psy3330 W10?

The action I would advise in this specific case is, to discuss it with them on their talk page, and explain the policy, asking them to please ensure each individual gets their own account; monitoring the situation and taking further action if and when appropriate. I don't see it as being truly disruptive, or a deliberate attempt to cause problems, thus I would discuss it with them first.

So - please feel free to advise them, if you wish. If you would prefer me to follow up on it for you, just let me know on my own talk page, and I will be happy to do so.

Based around

I've noticed that you are changing the bad grammar of "based around" to "based on". However, that is not the only possibility, "based around" could also be "built around" depending on the context of the sentence. See this for an example. --JD554 (talk) 10:57, 31 March 2010 (UTC)

I'd agree that based around is correct in some contexts, and, on a quick check, with several other examples akin to the one above amongst your edits. Additionally, this example regards the base of a campus which is literally based in the area around George Square, not on it. Mutt Lunker (talk) 13:01, 31 March 2010 (UTC)

Not making that change anymore; apparently some things have slipped past me. You are right, "based around" often is not the best way to say it, but then again there is no one possible phrase to change it to either. It's not as suitable to semi-automatically fix as I had thought. And it is good that you did notice the incorrect changes and leave a message for me. Rowing at Penn

Hi PleaseStand, curious why you chose to argue Rowing at Penn failed the notability test. I understand and concur on the sources referenced and plan on adding them shortly. The article is by no means complete. The sport has been practiced and independently documented at the University for over 150 years, the team holds and has held numerous national records, produced dozens upon dozens of Olympians, and members of the team have had various parts of the Philadelphia named after them (because of their contributions to the sport). Since you were kind enough to propose the article for deletion without specifically explaining your 'fail' results (why the article fails notability), perhaps you would be kind enough to explain them specifically now. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Hpiranha (talk • contribs) 12:58, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

Sorry for the misunderstanding. It was an anonymous editor that did so, not me. Here is a link to show that. It is the editor shown on the right-hand side (68.171.234.204) that made the change; the edit just before that one was a minor fix I performed. In case you are wondering, it is perfectly acceptable for anyone to remove a PROD deletion tag; the warning you got from 5 albert square for doing so was a mistake. One more thing: when saving a page, fill in the edit summary box with a brief description of the changes you made. It is easier for editors to examine the history of an article that way. DYK nomination of USS Recruit (1917)

Thanks for reviewing my submission. :) I think I realise what's wrong - going by the pages sizes on the history page, it appears that it's only been 4x expanded, however I recall reading that, for DYK, you only count prose text - references, templates (the infobox), links/see also/lists etc. don't count. Many thanks for the coding. There is one more thing. I want the option to be able to browse the index alphabetically. Is there a way you can add this option like a "next article" and "previous article" option in the top bar which reads the index and moves on to the next article in the index like you would in a written encyclopedia? For example say I'm reading an article on Aa Ab Laut Chalen. I click the next article option and it moves onto Aa Dekhen Zara, the next in the index? The coding would need to read the index and be programmed to read what comes next and then load the page automatically I think.. If this is not possible can you provide me with the option to click "index" on the page I'm on and it locates it in the index and then I can browse forward or backwards alphabetically? That would be great. It beats me though why we don't have such option in the first place like to shrink sidebar or navigate alphabetically. You'd think those would help the useability of the site... I'm sure I'm not the only one who has wanted to be able to shrink the side bar.... I'm currently making city locator maps e.g like Template:Location map United States Manhattan. OK, here's something. Use the line importScript("User:PleaseStand/wikiapi.js"); importScript("User:PleaseStand/prevnext.js"); (yes, use both). It's not perfect, but it works on Firefox. One of the Wikipedia forks uses the similar mw:Extension:Back-and-Forth that runs on the server, not that I can think of any specific reason that "back-and-forth" links are useful. I changed the template so that the SUBJECTPAGENAME part is unnecessary. I also posted on WP:VPT regarding the merits of substitution versus transclusion of the {{Freeze/link}} template because you mention using the template as part of a signature. Either way, though, {{subst:frz|2=as I saw it}} should be sufficient now. I do not believe, though, that an "as I saw it" link is necessary for everything though (of course not if the discussion does not have to do with any article). If you do add it, it would be a manual addition just before your signature because using it in a discussion such as an AfD debate would require different parameters than on an article talk page. (And no, using BASEPAGENAME rather than SUBJECTPAGENAME would not always solve the problem since sometimes there is a "(2nd nomination)" of an article.) Mirrorpedia

Hi PleaseStand, I am working on a project called Mirrorpedia which will hopefully obviate the need for an offline copy of Wikipedia (unless you just happen to be unable to access the Internet at an acceptable speed where you are, or something like that.) But in any case, Mirrorpedia will keep all the Wikipedia content you could possibly want safe and sound, so that should you desire an offline backup, you can download it at your leisure. I wrote a script that hits the API for the content of all new revisions as they appear on the #en.wikipedia recent changes IRC channel. In this way, I can keep an up-to-date copy of every article, with its full history. http://tisanebot.com/logs/en.wikipedia/ has the log entries (I'm not gathering the raw revisions continuously at this time; I'm waiting till I implement the stuff mentioned in the next paragraph.

Of course, the raw data isn't very useful. It needs to be imported into a MediaWiki installation somehow. I figure there are a few possible routes. I could try to figure out a way to import it using one of the methods mentioned at mw:Manual:Importing XML dumps. Or maybe I can find a suitable mw:Manual:Database access wrapper function that will suit my purposes. I want to take advantage of as much abstraction as possible though, rather than reinventing the wheel. I'll be puzzling over this the next few days and trying different things, so if you have any ideas, please let me know. I am using User:ClueBot/Source to access the API, by the way. Please don't update the text of every revision as soon as it hits the IRC feed—I object to putting such load on Wikipedia's servers. What I want to save are 1) revisions that appear in the database dumps performed from time to time and 2) other revisions on demand (a menu selection both on the real Wikipedia page and on the archived copy to update the archive), to create an "offline" copy of Wikipedia that does not require my Internet connection or Wikipedia's servers to be working to read it. I thought your main concern was with content being removed due to censorship? But one wouldn't be able to know in advance what articles/images/etc. are going to be censored. (E.g., Jimbo's deletions were unexpected.) I guess the data dump would suffice for those purposes, as long as the censored content weren't added since the last data dump. That's fine with me. If I can save at least some of Wikipedia, that would be great. Again, what I am talking about is:

1. Updates of all Wikipedia pages upon release of a new database dump (older, and without images).
2. Updates of user-selected Wikipedia pages (newer, and with images). Actually, it is fine with me to automatically update some pages through IRC, but I would want to incorporate such functionality into an anti-vandalism bot to justify my use of resources. Part of the idea of Mirrorpedia is also to allow bots to hit it with API requests rather than having them hit Wikipedia. I'm thinking that the additional replag could probably be kept pretty reasonable (it could auto-detect the current replag using this tool and wait the designated period before trying to hit the API). The costs of the mirror would be a fixed cost, rather than a variable cost, in that an infinite number of bots could be added without putting more load on the Wikimedia servers. WP seems to get several tens of thousands of hits per second, so another hit or two per second is probably not going to be a big deal, especially since only text (not images) would be loaded with each revision, and the net effect might be to reduce server load anyway.

Anyway, back to the point you were making. It sounds like the same technology that my project will require could also be used to make your project work. The only difference is that you would probably maintain an array or database table of page titles and/or page ids to update, and only hit the API when those pages are changed. I'm not sure integrating it within an anti-vandalism tool would suffice to give you an excuse to hit the API; after all, an anti-vandalism tool that seeks to minimize API hits would probably maintain a whitelist so that it wouldn't, for instance, check edits made by Jimbo Wales for vandalism. But as mentioned in the preceding paragraph, I don't think you really need an excuse. If memory serves, the cases I've seen in which Wikimedia started contacting users and objecting to their use of resources were when they were hitting the servers about 50 times a second in order to maintain a live mirror in which every time a user hit the mirror, the mirror hit Wikipedia.
