localization
Hi, would you please add translation part like other tools to have localization specially bottom's label. thanksReza1615 (talk) 22:01, 30 January 2012 (UTC)
- Which user script are you referring to? I will soon rewrite my user scripts (References segregator, Comment highlighter, User info, and Hide Vector sidebar) to take advantage of subsequent upgrades to Wikipedia's software, and a localization system based on the user's selected language will be included. However, I do not maintain every user script on this wiki; it is certainly possible you are asking about a script I do not maintain, such as navigation popups or Twinkle. PleaseStand (talk) 04:18, 31 January 2012 (UTC)
- Now, we are using References segregator in fa.wiki but it's bottom's and labels are in english would you please define localization dictionary like navigation popups? Reza1615 (talk) 19:06, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
- also I installed here and fa:کاربر:Reza1615/vector.js and fa:مدیاویکی:Gadget-Commenthighlighter.js as gadget but it doesn't work in fa.wiki! what should i do to active it? and how can i localize User info ?Reza1615 (talk) 19:21, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
Here is the status of localization for all my user scripts as of 8 February 2012.
- References segregator: Completely implemented. I had already implemented localization in much the same way as Navigation popups does it (in response to a request from the Finnish Wikipedia). See User talk:PleaseStand/References segregator#References segregator in finnish wikipedia for instructions and a localized version used at the Finnish Wikipedia. If you want your localization to work now, you will need to keep the
version: 1.11,
line intact.
- User script sandbox: Mostly implemented. Most of it is localizable by copying its wiki page to a local wiki and translating the text. It is not currently possible to change the name of the wiki page used (it will be Project:User script sandbox), but that will not take much effort for me to add.
- Hide Vector sidebar: Mostly implemented, although only in an experimental version of the script. The experimental version is located at User:PleaseStand/sidebarToggle.js and is significantly different from the old version. Currently, it is not localizable in the same manner as Navigation popups; however, if you send me translations of the phrases "Toggle sidebar" and "Hide or show the sidebar", I can add them for you. The old version of the script is not localizable and has not yet replaced the old version because I need to a) add support for using the keyboard to hide and show the sidebar and b) do a bit more testing.
- Comment highlighter: In a week or two. A new, localizable version is under development.
- User info: In several weeks to a month. It is not easy for me to add localization functionality to this script. I would have to completely rewrite the script, as the script currently builds its output according to hardcoded English grammar rules. See this Stack Exchange answer for a description of what is involved in such a rewrite. PleaseStand (talk) 23:45, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
- thank you for your fast answer I done for References segregator and it works like a charm :) also I chenged button color to #F88017 (dark orange) because many user couldn't see green color!
- for other codes I wait for your new revisions :) thank you, yours Reza1615 (talk) 09:17, 9 February 2012 (UTC)
- two points for User:PleaseStand/sidebarToggle.js
- 1- Persian (fa) translation "Toggle sidebar" :"تغییر وضعیت نوار سمت راست" and "Hide or show the sidebar":"مخفی یا نمایش نوار سمت راست"
- 2-for rtl wikis it changed the sidebar to left side :) also it only increase the page size on left side and in these wikis it have to increase the right sideReza1615 (talk) 09:30, 9 February 2012 (UTC)
- I already knew about the RTL issue from my prior testing but overlooked the fact that your wiki is RTL. That problem should now be fixed (and your translation should be there), although you might have to use Ctrl-F5 (or clear your cache) to reload the script. PleaseStand (talk) 14:48, 9 February 2012 (UTC)
- I tested and it works. whould you please move the button to right side? it is exactly on exit and contribution buttons. :) thank you for your timeReza1615 (talk) 17:59, 9 February 2012 (UTC)
- Comment highlighter now is working in fa.wiki. would you please translate it "highlight":"پررنگ" "unhighlight":"بدون رنگ" also how can i move it the button form drop-down menu to right side toolbar? because this menu is used for other tools. now it is very messy!Reza1615 (talk) 18:38, 9 February 2012 (UTC)

Bot for reference formatting
Hello PleaseStand,
Would you know of any bot (or script or anything like this) to automatize reference formatting? For example one that would turn a ref like [1] into a ref like [2]
Thanks. Nodar95 (talk) 20:01, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
- There is a bot called the Citation bot that you can use by transcluding the {{Cite doi}} or {{Cite pmid}} template. The bot will create a subpage of that template having the bibliographic information, which will automatically appear in the article after the bot has processed it. PleaseStand (talk) 20:57, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you, this is exactly what I was looking for. Nodar95 (talk) 22:05, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
Your userinfo script
The 1.19 upgrade seems to have broken your userinfo script, leaving me bereft without intimate details of every editor whose userspace I touch. Any chance you could take a look at it and see if you can figure out where it's gone wrong? The denizens of #wikimedia-tech on IRC have offered that if you need help figuring out the borkage, you can go to mw:Talk:RL/MGU and mw:RL/MGU. Thanks! A fluffernutter is a sandwich! (talk) 00:35, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
- There is nothing on that page about the MW 1.19 upgrade, and the script has continued to work fine for me. I am going to try isolating which of your other user scripts or gadgets is causing the problem. Do you have any gadgets turned on in your preferences, which I cannot see by looking at User:Fluffernutter/vector.js? PleaseStand (talk) 00:41, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
- It might be an EasyBlock issue. Does adding
function akeytt() {}
at the top of your vector.js fix the script? PleaseStand (talk) 01:41, 1 March 2012 (UTC)- That did it! Woohoo, thank you :) A fluffernutter is a sandwich! (talk) 03:13, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
User script listings cleanup project
I'm leaving this message for all recent contributors to Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts.
This scripts listing page is in dire need of cleanup. To facilitate this, I've created a new draft listing at Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts cleanup. You're invited to list scripts you know to be currently working and relevant. Eventually this draft page can replace the current scripts listing.
If you'd like to comment or collaborate on this proposal, see the discussion I started here: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject User scripts#Scripts listing cleanup project. Thanks! Equazcion (talk) 00:19, 25 Mar 2012 (UTC)
Invitation to events in June and July: bot, script, template, and Gadget makers wanted
I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon. It's 1-3 June and registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, just mention it in the registration form.
This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets (extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.
Our goals for the event are to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!
I also thought you might want to know about other upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.
Check out the the developers' days preceding Wikimania in July in Washington, DC and our other events.
Best wishes! - Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation's Volunteer Development Coordinator. Please reply on my talk page, here or at mediawiki.org. Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation Volunteer Development Coordinator 14:39, 2 April 2012 (UTC)
How to use "Hide Vector sidebar" only for editing?
Thanks for all your great scripts! Re Hide Vector sidebar, do you know how to automatically hide the sidebar only when editing a page? ··gracefool☺ 19:39, 20 June 2012 (UTC)
- You can try this instead of the normal import code. It should prevent the script from loading except on edit pages. PleaseStand (talk) 22:44, 20 June 2012 (UTC)
if ( document.getElementById( 'editform' ) ) {
importScript( 'User:PleaseStand/hide-vector-sidebar.js' );

Regarding the Hide Vector sidebar code
Hi, I am assuming that your Hide Vector sidebar code hides the side bar at the left of this page which is what I am trying to do. I copied and pasted the code into TengoKbailar/vector.js then saved and bypassed cache but I can not make it work :( Oh for a show/hide button at the top of the page how simple. I would appreciate it if you could tell me how to achieve this.
I do not know if I am complicating my life.....when I download pages from toolbox PDF the navigation links do not work, when I create a page using Adobe they work but I have the side bar taking up space.
Thank you
Michael TengoKbailar (talk • contribs) 22:54, 25 August 2012 (UTC)
- Someone made a well-intentioned edit a couple months ago to describe how to hide the sidebar only when editing pages. Unfortunately, this edit introduced a syntax error into the import code. Try removing the word "if" that comes before "importScript", and see if that change gets the script working. These days, I ought to check my watchlist more frequently, and more carefully :) PleaseStand (talk) 23:09, 25 August 2012 (UTC)
Pie chart template
Hi there. I think you created {{Pie chart}}
, so I thought I'd ask you if there's some way to make text wrap around it. CanadianJudoka (talk) 02:54, 9 September 2012 (UTC)
- Do you mean putting the pie chart on the left-hand side of the page? If so, according to the documentation,
|thumb=right
|thumb=left
should work. PleaseStand (talk)18:27, 11 September 2012 (UTC)20:33, 11 September 2012 (UTC)- No, I mean that I want to be able to put this in a paragraph on the left and have the text wrap around it in the same way that it would wrap around a picture. As it stands now, it leaves a big space beside it and restarts the text underneath (as rendered in Chrome and FireFox, at least). CanadianJudoka (talk) 20:31, 11 September 2012 (UTC)
- For me, there is no difference between how the text wraps around the left-floated template and how it wraps around an left-aligned image. If they look different for you, I would like to know which operating system and web browser you are using. PleaseStand (talk) 20:51, 11 September 2012 (UTC)
- It turns out that the problems is that I had left the "thumb" parameter blank. Using Chrome on Windows 7, leaving it blank defaults to the left and does not allow text wrap-around. Setting the parameter with either left or right works correctly, though, and wraps the text. CanadianJudoka (talk) 03:51, 12 September 2012 (UTC)

References segregator is gone

- Recent changes to the edit form in MediaWiki 1.20wmf11 broke the script. The script had assumed the absence of a new containing div around the "Content that violates any copyrights [...] is sufficient attribution under the Creative Commons license." text, above which it inserted the button and additional text box. I changed the script to insert the button just below the main text box instead (which is approximately where the button used to be). PleaseStand (talk) 16:40, 13 September 2012 (UTC)

bug 40789?
You cited bug 40789. Do you know anything more about it? In particular, do you have any idea when the fix will be deployed? (I ask because it has broken User:Scsbot, and we're wondering whether we're going to have to start archiving the Reference Desks by hand.) Thanks. —Steve Summit (talk) 10:43, 11 October 2012 (UTC)
- That bug only affects the "Return to" link shown after a successful login. A fixed version (1.21wmf2) is supposed to be deployed Monday, October 22 (or sooner if a system administrator performs a "live hack" to fix the problem). However, if this bot had used the MediaWiki API (which, of course, did not exist when you wrote the bot) instead of "screen scraping", this particular change would not have stopped it from working. Also, other changes to the HTML output have happened recently, including the enabling of HTML5 output and some WMF experiments that inadvertently break XML validity. Are you planning on converting the bot to use the API, or would you like me to write a replacement? PleaseStand (talk) 17:48, 11 October 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for the info.
- I would very much like to convert this bot to use the API (screen scraping is quite a hack), but I'm not sure if/when I'll find time to do so. —Steve Summit (talk) 11:14, 12 October 2012 (UTC)
- I just realized (after I had my bot account renamed) that non-unified accounts get an automatic redirect to HTTPS rather than just an incorrect "Return to" link. Perhaps just logging in with your bot account and going through the Special:MergeAccount process would get the bot running again (for now). PleaseStand (talk) 18:12, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

References segregator issue
Every time I try to use the segregator on User:Takuy/sandbox, or Talk:The_New_52/Temp, the green button disappears once I click it. Nothing at all happens. I just click "Edit" in the header, and then click "segregate refs for editing". It goes poof. The pages are forks of The New 52, and it works fine on that page. Any idea what I could be doing wrong? || Tako (talk) 00:49, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
- There were a few syntax errors in the ref code, most of which involved quotation marks preceding ref names without matching quotes afterward. However, one erroneous ref took the form of
<refname="[...]"> [...]
, and because of a typo in the "refScanRegex", the script mistakenly identified it as a valid ref tag while scanning the article's wikitext. Once it did, it tried to parse the tag and failed; I fixed the "refScanRegex" to prevent this particular failure from happening again. You may need to clear your web browser's cache to receive the fix. - Even when the article's wikitext is invalid, the script should still be able to "round-trip" it to separate text boxes and back; you did discover an actual bug. Thanks for the report. PleaseStand (talk) 01:51, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
- Aha, yeah. After your edit to the sandbox, I found a bunch of syntax errors, a few that you missed. It did strange things such as grouping the <ref>< until the third next</ref> or something when your program ran. Though, I figured it out. Thanks for the quick fix response. || Tako (talk) 01:58, 21 October 2012 (UTC)

userinfo.js not working?

kcylsnavS{screechharrass} 01:54, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
- It works fine for me. I noticed that large portions of the script at User:Svanslyck/common.js are missing, rendering it syntactically invalid. Such an error will prevent the importScript() calls in User:Svanslyck/vector.js from functioning. If you blank your common.js page entirely (and bypass or clear your web browser's cache), does userinfo.js work for you? PleaseStand (talk) 02:11, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

Hi.
I think this template is absolutely brilliant, but i think the right thing to do will be to convert it to Lua (or rather, create a counterpart in Lua that will overcome many of the limitations).
some of the advantages i think we can gain are:
- remove the artificial limit on number of slices
- make the code itself more readable and easy to understand
- allow different sizes than 200x200 (maybe this can be easily achievable even without lua - i do not fully understand the need for this limitation)
- allow input in units other than percents, including language specific formatting of numbers (like 12,452)
- make the syntax of using the template easier and more convenient
- (this may be a bit ambitious, but i think it can be done): Allow wrapping it in {{#tag:imagemap, to enable making the slices linkable.
I'd love it if you can peek at Module:Chart, and maybe also at the discussion in Wikipedia:Lua requests, and specifically at Wikipedia:Lua requests#Numerous prior templates.
