WikiCup 2020 July newsletter
The third round of the 2020 WikiCup has now come to an end. The 16 users who made it into the fourth round each had at least 353 points (compared to 68 in 2019). It was a highly competitive round, and a number of contestants were eliminated who would have moved on in earlier years. Our top scorers in round 3 were:
- Epicgenius, with one featured article, 28 good articles and 17 DYKs, amassing 1836 points
- The Rambling Man , with 1672 points gained from four featured articles and seventeen good articles, plus reviews of a large number of FACs and GAs
- Gog the Mild, a first time contestant, with 1540 points, a tally built largely on 4 featured articles and related bonus points.
Between them, contestants managed 14 featured articles, 9 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 152 good articles, 136 DYK entries, 55 ITN entries, 65 featured article candidate reviews and 221 good article reviews. Additionally, MPJ-DK added 3 items to featured topics and 44 to good topics. Over the course of the competition, contestants have completed 710 good article reviews, in comparison to 387 good articles submitted for review and promoted. These large numbers are probably linked to a GAN backlog drive in April and May, and the changed patterns of editing during the COVID-19 pandemic. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process.
If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Welcome new GOCE Coordinator!
Congrats on your election as a Coordinator for the Guild of Copy Editors and thank you for being willing to serve. As an outgoing coordinator, I thought I'd provide you with some links and other info, and some advice that I received:
Please remember that, as the main Coordinators page states, we are "responsible for maintaining the Guild's internal structure and processes. [We] do not, however, have any authority over article content or editor conduct, or any other special powers." We operate by (sometimes presumed) consensus and do our best to check in with one another before taking an action that another coordinator might reasonably revert.
A few things you might want to check that you have in order:
- Familiarize yourself with the Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Coordinators/Task list. If you're curious about how something is done, you can usually figure it out from the page history of the last time a task was addressed. There are step-by-step instructions for drives, blitzes, and award templates. If you have a question or want a second opinion, leave a note at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Coordinators.
- Familiarize yourself with the layout of all the Guild pages, what information is where, and how to direct new copyeditors to the information they need.
- Try to get all of these pages on your watchlist. Also watchlist the red-linked ones at Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Blitzes/Archives and Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Backlog elimination drives/Archives so you'll receive a notification when a new blitz/drive/barnstar page is set up.
If you're into this sort of thing, you can display the coordinator insignia (above) on your user page, along with Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Coordinators/Userbox on your user page. You can also display a top icon using:
{{Top icon
| imagename = GOCE Coordinator.png
| wikilink = Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Coordinators
| description = This user is a '''[[wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Coordinators|Coordinator]]''' for the '''[[wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors|Guild of Copy Editors]]'''.
| id = GOCEcoordinator-icon
}}
but it's difficult to make out at tiny size. There is also the regular Template:GOCE topicon.
Thanks again for being willing to serve. – Reidgreg (talk) 11:37, 2 July 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you for the tips Reidgreg! I look forward to helping out. All the best -- puddleglum2.0 21:44, 2 July 2020 (UTC)

Would you like to review the Saturn V for GA? If you don't or can't it is fine. Good job on the GOCE! Best, Signed,The4lines |||| (You Asked?) (What I have Done.) 18:22, 8 July 2020 (UTC)
- The4lines, hi, good to hear from you! I'd love to do the Saturn V review, but I really don't have a ton of time right now - I'm busy with the GOCE, Signpost, and CVUA, all handled while being busy IRL. I can refer you to some other hopefully helpful things - maybe contribute more to the article more than you did to the Deep Blue article - this will give reviewers a better view of you and show them that you're dedicated. After you've done that, if you want your request fasttracked, you can request a review from some prolific editors who have a lot more time than me - maybe @The Rambling Man:? (Although you might have to do a quid pro quo for them. =) ) Anyway, I'm sorry I don't have the time, I'd love to but am unfortunately unable. Hope you understand. Speedy deletion of copyrighted page Josias Welsh
Hi Puddleglum I know it's not your job to educate me but I had a page deleted for copyright and have no idea why. AfD
I respectfully request that you please undo your close of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/V. H. Lewis, restore the AfD template to the article, and allow a Wikipedia administrator to close the discussion. North America1000 17:25, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
- Northamerica1000, why? You're the only person who !voted delete, and I thought the keeps before and after pretty much refuted your !vote (although it was well thought-out, thanks for your view.) I'd be happy to revert my decision, but I'm afraid I'm going to need a bit more reasoning, as I don't see how it violates the WP:NAC guidelines - consensus was pretty clear I thought. Thanks for bringing this to my attention! Cheers -- puddleglum2.0 17:57, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
- For starters, the nomination for deletion also "counts" as a delete !vote; it appears you are not aware of this. Also, deletion discussions are not closed based upon a vote count, they're supposed to be closed based upon the overall merits of the arguments. It appears that you're aware that the "votes" are actually referred to as "!votes", meaning "not vote". Furthermore, the first two "keep" !votes are not based upon policies or guidelines: they're based upon personal opinion that has no consensus in the community, and carry little weight. There is no presumed notabilty for religious subjects on English Wikipedia at this time. Again, I request that you please comply with my sincere request above and allow for an admin to close the discussion. North America1000 18:17, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
- Northamerica1000, of course I know the debates are based off of consencus, not votes, and that the nomination counts - I meant to say your's was the only agreeing !vote. (Not that it matters of course, as it's built on consencus.) When assessing the merits of the arguments, I pretty much discounted the second vote as you're right, it's based on personal opinion, but for the first vote I counted Peterkingirons comment below the relist, which includes three or four secondary sources, including one from the LA Times, which is both secondary and reliable, and it was not a passing mention. Your argument was built on the fact that we can't have primary sources or passing mentions, which I completely agree with, but after your vote, I count no less than ten sources that are not passing mentions and suitable for the article. I'm just not sure how you can discount all ten sources and delete the article. Of course, I don't have nearly as much experience as you, but this is how I'm seeing things here. I don't doubt your request was sincere, but I also don't want to reverse my close while I still am pretty sure it's correct. I could be completely wrong, I'm open to opening a close reivew if you want, maybe we could get a third opinion from others. Either way, those are my current concerns, thanks again! Cheers -- puddleglum2.0 18:36, 10 July 2020 (UTC)

Counter-Vandalism Unit: prospective student
Hi, I would like to learn to fight vandalism in the Counter-Vandalism Academy. I see that at the moment you have no open student slots, but I'm fine waiting until you can take another pupil, if you'll accept me. I'm also a member of GOCE. Thanks in advance!
Alan Islas (talk) 21:56, 5 July 2020 (UTC)
- Alan Islas, hi, thanks for reaching out! So, I think I've got two options for you. I'd love to take you on, but yes, as you say, I'm rather busy right now, both with CVUA and RL, but if you're willing to accept that it will take me longer (maybe up to days, though I'll try to do it ASAP) to grade your answers, I can set things up, or you can wait until a student graduates (right now, I think that would probably be two to three weeks). Hope these options help, I look forward to your reply! Cheers -- puddleglum2.0 21:53, 6 July 2020 (UTC)
- Both options work for me actually. I don't mind waiting for the grades at all, so if that's ok we can get started whenever you have a chance. I'm not in a hurry. I created my Wikipedia account a few years back but only about six months ago started to edit more in earnest. I think at this point I'm hopelessly hooked, so will be here for the long run. Thanks, looking forward to starting with the Academy! Alan Islas (talk) 23:44, 6 July 2020 (UTC)

I have a question...
Hello, I told my friend to start editing Wikipedia and doing some anti-vandal work. It's not meatpuppetry (I think) because he's not gonna be voting on things. Would it be improper for me to help him and tell him what to do? Thanks, Thanoscar21talk, contribs 22:21, 11 July 2020 (UTC)
- Thanoscar21, hello! I think it would be fine, although I'm certainly no expert in those matters. As long as you aren't telling him where to !vote or telling him to help you in edit wars or other causes, you should be good! If you want to be on the really safe side, there's a userbox, I can do some digging if you want to use it. Would you mind giving me his username? That way I can keep tabs to make sure there aren't any violations. If you don't want to that's fine also. Cheers! -- puddleglum2.0 01:50, 12 July 2020 (UTC)

CVUA admission request
Hi, @Puddleglum2.0, hope that you will be fine. I'm here to request you that can you accept me as your pupil for training vandalism? I'm nearly 3 months old user. Please ping me if you agree. Thank you. Empire AS Talk! 12:21, 8 July 2020 (UTC)
- Empire AS, hi, thanks for reaching out. Maybe you should wait for your other request to be answered? I'm hesitant to accept you based on the advice given you by Girth and Cass - but I may be easier persuaded. =) It looks like even without the CVUA course, you're doing a great job reverting vandalism - saw that you just received PCR rights, congratulations and thank you for your work you do here, please don't let this discourage you. All the best, -- puddleglum2.0 18:58, 8 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Puddleglum2.0, Thank you for encouraging and congratulating me. You're too nice. An admin suggested me to get training from CVUA to get rollback rights. So, I asked Girth, but they responded that they are too busy right now. Cass advised me to use a computer instead of tablet. However, I don't even know how to use a computer. Therefore, I request you to accept me as your pupil. But one thing for which I apologise is that I can't use computer or laptop. I can use desktop site on mobile or tablet for this purpose. Mention me in your reply. Thank you. Empire AS Talk! 12:01, 9 July 2020 (UTC)
- Empire AS, OK, I can probably accept you in about a week's time, when one of my students will probably be done. I do want to make sure of one thing though - as they are a very important thing in the course, could you please give me a diff of this revision (or any other). You can read how at WP:DIFF. Thanks! -- puddleglum2.0 22:51, 9 July 2020 (UTC)

- Empire AS, whenever we get done hinges on how fast you answer questions and I grade them - I can do my best, but I can't shorten the course, every bit of information is important. If we're not done by September, I can put the course on hold until your more active and resume it when you get back - no harm done! Hope this works. Cheers -- puddleglum2.0 23:10, 12 July 2020 (UTC)

CVUA Training
Hello! I would like to enroll CVUA because i have being warned to need train CVUA in WP:ANI, thanks -BEAMALEXANDER25, talk 22:43, 14 July 2020 (UTC)
- BeamAlexander25, hi! I don't really have a problem enrolling you, but keep in mind that I don't have a lot of time nowadays, so I may be slow in responding. In light of your ANI thread, I'm going to ask you to abide by these couple restrictions (specific to the CVUA course, just to keep you away from a block.)
- You can enable either Redwarn or Twinkle, but only use them for reverting vandalism I ask you to in a question.
- Unless asked and/or supervised, you may only revert obvious, 100% clear vandalism - if you are unsure, you can give me a diff and we'll discuss it, and that should hopefully give you a better understanding.
- Apart from doing so for the course, you still need to keep away from RC patrolling, I don't want anything that would warrant a block during the course.
- If you have any questions about these, feel free to ask! In order to get a second pair of eyes on the matter, I'm going to ping @Dennis Brown: do you think these restrictions are acceptable? You were the one who advised and warned BA25, so I want to make sure I'm not overstepping any administrative boundaries set here. Cheers! -- puddleglum2.0 23:29, 14 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Puddleglum2.0: I already read WP:Vandal and i understand their policies, thank -BEAMALEXANDER25, talk 00:41, 15 July 2020 (UTC)
- There was no formal restriction in that discussion, but since then, BeamAlexander25 has been blocked for disruptive editing. On a personal level, I would advise against them participating in vandalism patrol (but there is no policy or administrative restriction at this time) simply because there are (likely) age related CIR issues at stake. GOCE request for Lights (BTS song)
Hi Puddleglum2.0, just saw that you accepted the c/e request for Lights (BTS song). Now the problem is that a reviewer has already started to review this article yesterday and I have to make changes to the prose as and when he proposes, so if a c/e is done simultaneously it would result in edit-conflict, don't you think? So I was wondering if the copy-edit could be put on hold till the review is over? Or, is it better if I switch this article with another song "Catallena" which is also a GA nominee but the reviewer might start with it 3-4 days later? So it could do with some prose-tightening in the meantime? Please let me know which is comfortable for you, and I apologise for the inconvenience. --Ashleyyoursmile! 05:40, 15 July 2020 (UTC)
- Ashleyyoursmile, interesting dilemna! My preference would be to switch over to the other article, assuming two things. First, that the GA nomination passes (on the original article), which is probable, and second, that you're not planning on bringing it to FA. If it fails for prose related reasons, I'd be happy to attempt to fix them, and if you're going to improve it to FA level I can try to get the prose to the level expected there. Otherwise, I don't see much point in copyediting it, and would rather switch to Catallena. Either way you choose, I can do the correct "paperwork" over at GOCEREQ. Cheers -- puddleglum2.0 19:15, 15 July 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you for your response. I think I would switch to "Catallena" in that case, since I don't have plans for a FA yet. --Ashleyyoursmile! 08:05, 16 July 2020 (UTC)

- The creeper2007, thanks for the note. I was actually going to include a rollback section after the Final Exam, I apologize for not being more clear. After you answer the questions there, I'll ping the admin on your talk page and let them know that you've passed CVUA and that I'll monitor your rollback usage for a while, that should hopefully work. We're working on making this easier, but if you come across an edit you reverted like that, it's best to either leave it to a more experienced editor or reach out to me for advice, rather than just revert it. CVUA Curriculum suggestion
Hi. Hope you're doing well. Noticed that you just posted The creeper's final exam score for CVUA. You might want to consider adding something to the curriculum that would address this kind of scenario. I didn't notice anything, from a few searches of the CVUA page anything that would cover that sort of scenario around removal of uncited material. This isn't the first time I have seen proper such removals treated as vandalism. Just a thought. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 23:50, 16 July 2020 (UTC)
- Barkeep49, thanks for the note, I completely agree. I've been working on an idea Ed6767 brought to my attention for a feature built into either Twinkle or Redwarn that would make it easier for students (or even any newer user) to request help on unclear revisions, but that would be kind of tricky. Unfortunately, I don't have a ton of time nowadays, and so can't keep track of all my students TPs (although I try), much less there reversions. I'll work on writing something in about uncited removal reversions, but again, the days demand my time, hope you understand. I'm going to ping the two other CVUA trainers, Cassiopeia and Girth Summit to see if they have any ideas or thoughts on the matter - I know Girth and I employ similar curriculums, but haven't looked at Cassiopiea's in depth yet. Thanks again! Cheers. -- puddleglum2.0 03:21, 17 July 2020 (UTC)
- Certainly understand limitations in keep track of students. Brought it to your attention given that it seems like a good topic for inclusion in the course. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 03:26, 17 July 2020 (UTC)
- Hi PG - thanks for the ping. This is something I usually discuss with students - the importance of checking blanked content before reinstating it - but it's not done in a structured way and I agree with you and Barkeep49 that it's something we should probably address more formally. My thoughts:
- It should be done quite early on in the course - perhaps in the initial stages when we're discussing the different between good faith problematic edits and vandalism.
- We should touch on different types of blanking - sometimes it's just random chunks of text, which is likely vandalism or test editing; sometimes however, someone is removing specific sections or assertions. That kind of more careful removal might be (and often is) problematic (e.g. whitewashing), but it isn't necessarily done with bad intent, and it might well be that the content doesn't belong in the article (as was the case in the scenario above) and the removal is an improvement.
- Things the trainee should consider: What is the article? What is the content that has been removed? Is it sourced? Are the sources reliable? Do they support the content as written? Did the account/IP use an edit summary when the removed it explaining what they're doing?
- We should point out to them that if you reinstate content, you effectively take responsibility for it, which can have serious implications if that content is a BLP violation, for example, so knee-jerk reverting isn't appropriate.
- Reinstating content that isn't apparent vandalism is not covered by WP:3RRNO, so they should be careful about edit warring if they decide to reinstate and face pushback.
- Do you want to try and put something together on this? I can do it if you're too busy. Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 10:33, 17 July 2020 (UTC)
- Girth Summit, Thanks for the thoughts! I can probably find some time to write up a rough draft, I guess I'll make a subpage at User:Puddleglum2.0/CVUA/Blanking and start there. We'll see how it turns out, I'll ping you when I have something. All the best -- puddleglum2.0 18:08, 17 July 2020 (UTC)
