MassCFD feature requests
Hi Qwerfjkl! I've got two requests for MassCFD, one smaller than the other.
The (easier? It sounds easier...) one the script should warn people when closing the tab with entered information (on Chrome, it has a popup which says "Leave site? Changes you made may not be saved.").
The second (probably a bit more complex?) request is some way to do a mass WP:CFDS nomination. Whichever way is easiest to implement; maybe adding to the menu of dropdown options?
Anyways, thank you for all you do category wise (and for Wikipedia in general!). No pressure, no deadlines.
Best, HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 02:04, 6 May 2024 (UTC)
- HouseBlaster, I've implemented the first one, it was pretty easy. The second request will take me a bit longer to implement. I'm also in the process of moving house right now, so it might take me a few days (or longer). — Qwerfjkltalk 17:27, 6 May 2024 (UTC)
- Take all the time you need, and thank you so much!! :) HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 19:23, 6 May 2024 (UTC)
- HouseBlaster, tagging the categories for Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2024 May 7#IIHF Ice Hockey Women's World Championships reminded me, I'll also add pasting support (which is already in CfD lister), meaning you can copy the text straight from the nomination section and just paste it in. — Qwerfjkltalk 17:33, 7 May 2024 (UTC)
- Awesome. Again, thank you so much!! HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 17:40, 7 May 2024 (UTC)
- HouseBlaster, okay, after a few days without internet I've gotten round to this. I have a couple of questions on the implementation:
- What template should I place on user talk pages (if any)?
- What format should I add the mass nomination in? It would seem redundant to add the rationale after each category if it's the same.
- In order:
- I don't normally place a template on UTPs; I don't think one exists(?). I would say don't leave a template.
- I think in the same way you enter a MassCFD rationale: there is a big box which lets you enter a rationale, which is mapped to each category. If you need to nominate a bunch of categories for different reasons, that is what Twinkle is for. If you need to some categories for one reason and other categories for a different reason, you can run simply the script twice.
- HouseBlaster, on 2 , that's not what I mean.
The format for a single CFDS nomination is:* :Category:Foo to :Category:Bar – C2X: rationale ~~~~.
For a mass nomination I could simply duplicate that for each category, or I could do something like— Qwerfjkltalk 20:40, 9 May 2024 (UTC)C2X: rationale ~~ ~~. :* :Category:Foo1 to :Category:Bar1 :* :Category:Foo2 to :Category:Bar2
- Ah. I would lean towards duplicating the rationale (if you need to write a paragraph at CFDS, that is a sign you should probably be at CFD). However, others might feel differently. Would you have any objections to pinging some CfD regulars to see what they think? HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 22:19, 9 May 2024 (UTC)
- HouseBlaster, no objections. — Qwerfjkltalk 14:37, 10 May 2024 (UTC)

@Fayenatic london, Hey man im josh, Marcocapelle, Nederlandse Leeuw, Pppery, Smasongarrison, and Ymblanter: thoughts on whether MassCFD at WP:CFDS should list nominations like Option A or Option B?
- Option A
* :Category:Foo1 to :Category:Bar1 – C2X: identical rationale. ~~~~ * :Category:Foo2 to :Category:Bar2 – C2X: identical rationale. ~~~~ * :Category:Foo3 to :Category:Bar3 – C2X: identical rationale. ~~~~
- Option B
C2X: identical rationale. ~~~~ * :Category:Foo1 to :Category:Bar1 * :Category:Foo2 to :Category:Bar2 * :Category:Foo3 to :Category:Bar3
Best, HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 15:16, 10 May 2024 (UTC)
- Holy hell I love the idea of having a tool for mass nominations, it can be suuuuch a paaaain. I too am leaning towards duplicating the rationale (option A). Hey man im josh (talk) 15:20, 10 May 2024 (UTC)
- Hey man im josh, duplicating the rationale is option A. — Qwerfjkltalk 15:43, 10 May 2024 (UTC)
- Fixed, thanks. For what it's worth though, I'm more than happy to refer to Ymblanter for their preference, since they do so much of the processing. Hey man im josh (talk) 15:45, 10 May 2024 (UTC)
- Hey man im josh, duplicating the rationale is option A. — Qwerfjkltalk 15:43, 10 May 2024 (UTC)
- Option B of course, it saves us a lot of time when we transfer the nominations for processing. (Also applies to manual nominations). Thanks a lot for working on it. Ymblanter (talk) 15:28, 10 May 2024 (UTC)
I also lean towards Option B.I often see fellow editors use it at CFDS, and recently I did it myself (for the first time?). The main reason for doing it that way is that it WP:CENTRALises discussion around the identical rationale of all nominees. I've had it happen several times that when I speedied like 10 cats from the same tree with the same rationale, one editor responded to every single one of them with Oppose and an identical reason for opposing each one of them. That is duplicating a whole lot of discussions that can easily be centralised using Option B. NLeeuw (talk) 15:30, 10 May 2024 (UTC)- Option B per Ymblanter. It should be manageable for the nominator as well as for the processor. Marcocapelle (talk) 15:58, 10 May 2024 (UTC)
- Option B of those two, definitely. But if it's not too much harder, could we have the following, which is what experienced editors have historically built manually?
- Option C
* :Category:Foo1 to :Category:Bar1 – C2X: rationale. ~~~~ ** :Category:Foo2 to :Category:Bar2 ** :Category:Foo3 to :Category:Bar3

- That markup (asterisk, followed by colon asterisk on the next line) is against the accessibility guidance at MOS:INDENTMIX. Just use multiple asterisks. – Fayenatic London 07:06, 12 May 2024 (UTC)
- Noting that I successfully ran this on a set of 83 category changes here. All pages appear tagged with the appropriate proposed title, so I'm pretty happy with it. Hey man im josh (talk) 16:33, 13 May 2024 (UTC)

Recent changes
- On Wikisource there is a special page listing pages of works without corresponding scan images. Now you can use the new magic word
__EXPECTWITHOUTSCANS__
to exclude certain pages (list of editions or translations of works) from that list. [1] - If you use the user-preference "Show preview without reloading the page", then the template-page feature "Preview page with this template (what's this?)" will now also work without reloading the page. [2]
- Kartographer maps can now specify an alternative text via the
alt=
attribute. This is identical in usage to thealt=
attribute in the image and gallery syntax. An exception for this feature is wikis like Wikivoyage where the miniature maps are interactive. [3] - The old Guided Tour for the "New Filters for Edit Review" feature has been removed. It was created in 2017 to show people with older accounts how the interface had changed, and has now been seen by most of the intended people. [4]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 May. It will be on all wikis from 16 May (calendar). [5][6]
- The Special:Search results page will now use CSS flex attributes, for better accessibility, instead of a table. If you have a gadget or script that adjusts search results, you should update your script to the new HTML structure. [7]
Future changes
- In the Vector 2022 skin, main pages will be displayed at full width (like special pages). The goal is to keep the number of characters per line large enough. This is related to the coming changes to typography in Vector 2022. Learn more. [8]
- Two columns of the
pagelinks
database table (pl_namespace
andpl_title
) are being dropped soon. Users must use two columns of the newlinktarget
table instead (lt_namespace
andlt_title
). In your existing SQL queries:- Replace
JOIN pagelinks
withJOIN linktarget
andpl_
withlt_
in theON
statement - Below that add
JOIN pagelinks ON lt_id = pl_target_id
- See phab:T222224 for technical reasoning. [9][10]

Hello all,
The next language community meeting is scheduled in a few weeks - May 31st at 16:00 UTC. If you're interested, you can sign up on this wiki page.
This is a participant-driven meeting, where we share language-specific updates related to various projects, collectively discuss technical issues related to language wikis, and work together to find possible solutions. For example, in the last meeting, the topics included the machine translation service (MinT) and the languages and models it currently supports, localization efforts from the Kiwix team, and technical challenges with numerical sorting in files used on Bengali Wikisource.
Do you have any ideas for topics to share technical updates related to your project? Any problems that you would like to bring for discussion during the meeting? Do you need interpretation support from English to another language? Please reach out to me at ssethi(__AT__)wikimedia.org and add agenda items to the document here.
We look forward to your participation!

Hi! How can I update the data in the 'Infobox' on the right side? I'm updating the population in Eindhoven )https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eindhoven) but I don't find the data stored in that Infobox.
Cheers, Benoît (username Bux666) --Bux666 (talk) 11:32, 15 May 2024 (UTC)
- Bux666, the infobox has the code
Eindhoven
, meaning the data is pulled from Template:Dutch municipality population. That template is semi-protected, meaning you need to have an account that has at least 10 edits and is at least 4 days old.
Looking at that template, I think it needs to be updated all at once, for all Dutch muncipalities. I can help with this if you'd like. — Qwerfjkltalk 14:19, 15 May 2024 (UTC)

Recent changes
- The Nuke feature, which enables administrators to mass delete pages, will now correctly delete pages which were moved to another title. [11]
- New changes have been made to the UploadWizard in Wikimedia Commons: the overall layout has been improved, by following new styling and spacing for the form and its fields; the headers and helper text for each of the fields was changed; the Caption field is now a required field, and there is an option for users to copy their caption into the media description. [12][13]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 21 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 22 May. It will be on all wikis from 23 May (calendar). [14][15]
- The HTML used to render all headings is being changed to improve accessibility. It will change on 22 May in some skins (Timeless, Modern, CologneBlue, Nostalgia, and Monobook). Please test gadgets on your wiki on these skins and report any related problems so that they can be resolved before this change is made in all other skins. The developers are also considering the introduction of a Gadget API for adding buttons to section titles if that would be helpful to tool creators, and would appreciate any input you have on that.

Dear community members,
The Community Affairs Committee (CAC) of the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees invites you to give feedback on a draft Procedure for Sibling Project Lifecycle. This draft Procedure outlines proposed steps and requirements for opening and closing Wikimedia Sibling Projects, and aims to ensure any newly approved projects are set up for success. This is separate from the procedures for opening or closing language versions of projects, which is handled by the Language Committee or closing projects policy.
You can find the details on this page, as well as the ways to give your feedback from today until the end of the day on June 23, 2024, anywhere on Earth.
You can also share information about this with the interested project communities you work with or support, and you can also help us translate the procedure into more languages, so people can join the discussions in their own language.

If possible, would you kindly help me with getting that script/bot running again? —usernamekiran (talk) 12:23, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
- Usernamekiran, from what I can tell the issue is due to Discussion Tools. Calling

returns:But what it expects is[{'anchor': 'Request:_World_Cafe', 'byteoffset': 3329, 'extensionData': {'DiscussionTools-html-summary': '<span ' 'class="ext-discussiontools-init-sidebar-meta">6 ' 'comments</span>'}, 'fromtitle': 'Wikipedia:Teahouse', 'index': '1', 'level': '2', 'line': 'Request: World Cafe', 'linkAnchor': 'Request:_World_Cafe', 'number': '1', 'toclevel': 1}, {'anchor': 'How_to_publish_my_page', 'byteoffset': 8292, 'extensionData': {'DiscussionTools-html-summary': '<span ' 'class="ext-discussiontools-init-sidebar-meta">4 ' 'comments</span>'}, 'fromtitle': 'Wikipedia:Teahouse', 'index': '2', 'level': '2', 'line': 'How to publish my page', 'linkAnchor': 'How_to_publish_my_page', 'number': '2', 'toclevel': 1}]

hi
how to move from draft to publish Sargunajames (talk) 00:03, 23 May 2024 (UTC)
- Sargunajames, see the response to your question at Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation/Help desk#00:26, 23 May 2024 review of submission by Sargunajames. Your draft is not suitable. — Qwerfjkltalk 05:53, 23 May 2024 (UTC)
Bug in MassCFD
Hi Qwerfjkl! Thanks again for making MassCFDS. I truly appreciate it.
One of its features has crept into MassCFD. The old drop-down options (e.g. delete, rename, etc.) are gone, and have been replaced with C2A (rename)
etc. Would you be able to fix this? Thanks, HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 00:14, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
- HouseBlaster, strange, possibly a variable name conflict. Which scripts do you have installed? Right now I'm working on User:Qwerfjkl/scripts/massXFD.js, to handle mass CfD and RfD nominations - I haven't tested it yet, but it might work. — Qwerfjkltalk 06:18, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
- I should probably let you know that I am out of town for the next few days, so I probably won't be able to reply / close CfDs and I definitely can't troubleshoot (sorry!). Maybe ignore for now and we can reconvene on Friday? Best, HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 11:53, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
- HouseBlaster, sounds good to me, I'll try to take care of closing CfDs until then. — Qwerfjkltalk 12:40, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
- MassXFd worked for me for Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2024 May 24#Wingate Bulldogs women's basketball. — Qwerfjkltalk 16:52, 24 May 2024 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2024 May 23#Category:Categories without CatAutoTOC and friends
Hi! Any particular reason you relisted Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2024 May 23#Category:Categories without CatAutoTOC and friends? Gonnym, the only person to comment on the nomination in 2.5 weeks, supported it. (their comment reads, with emphasis added, The only one to use this category really has been banned and there really is no indication what purpose this serve once the data was collected. So agree with proposal. If at any point in the future this or something similar is needed, recreating isn't that difficult.
) Best, HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 00:14, 25 May 2024 (UTC)
- HouseBlaster, yes, I read their comment. On second thoughts, it porbably didn't need relisting.Unfortunately I'm going to be away for the next week or so - I'm going on holiday in America. I'll hopefully still be around to answer questions, but I probably won't be able to do much more than that. — Qwerfjkltalk 08:31, 25 May 2024 (UTC)
- I wouldn't say that is an

thing—IRL trumps Wikipedia :D. As an American, hope you enjoy the states! HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 14:31, 25 May 2024 (UTC)

Any chance of adapting your recently approved bot to English Wikibooks and English Wikisource? ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 18:41, 25 May 2024 (UTC)
- Should be easier as exist on Wikibooks. And font, , also. I can provide more information if needed.. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 18:41, 25 May 2024 (UTC)
- ShakespeareFan00, sure, but I'm going to be busy for a while, so I'm not sure how much I can commit to this. — Qwerfjkltalk 23:27, 26 May 2024 (UTC)
Question from Coaches 101 (09:33, 15 May 2024)
How do I create an article called Quarantine Ring the alarm challenge, I am new to this and I want to get it right. Its a song issued by Tyrese Gibson, and I want to know what is the best practices to write this article? --Coaches 101 (talk) 09:33, 15 May 2024 (UTC)
- Coaches 101, Welcome! Creating a new article from scratch is extremely challenging, and new editors are strongly recommended to spend a few months learning how Wikipedia works, by making improvements to some of our existing seven million articles before trying it. When you do decide to have a go at a new article, you are highly encouraged to read WP:Your first article. If you haven't already also check out WP:TUTORIAL; it's a lot of fun! Happy editing! — Qwerfjkltalk 14:14, 15 May 2024 (UTC)
- I created an article here: would this violate Wikipedia standards?
- User:Coaches 101/sandbox - Wikipedia Coaches 101 (talk) 09:41, 16 May 2024 (UTC)
- Coaches 101, that looks too promotional for Wikipedia. I'd also encourage you to support statements with references, especially ones that are reliable and independant of the subject. — Qwerfjkltalk 14:59, 16 May 2024 (UTC)
- How can the footnotes be added on as references? What are reliable sources, if editors will still think the information is promotional? Coaches 101 (talk) 10:03, 20 May 2024 (UTC)
- Coaches 101, reliable sources should be independant of the subject. See Help:Referencing for beginners. — Qwerfjkltalk 16:21, 20 May 2024 (UTC)
- After carefully reading your Reference, this article was updated to fit the needs. How can this be published? User:Coaches 101/sandbox - Wikipedia Coaches 101 (talk) 07:17, 27 May 2024 (UTC)
