Hi, as per the above discussion, I think you meant to promote alt1 hook? Bungle (talk • contribs) 17:40, 31 October 2022 (UTC)
- Actually, I liked ALT0 better for the quirky slot. -- RoySmith (talk) 17:43, 31 October 2022 (UTC)
- That's a shame, especially as the nominator didn't object, and I and another editor preferred an alternate hook. Can I appeal? Bungle (talk • contribs) 17:47, 31 October 2022 (UTC)
- WP:DYKNN N9 says, "A funny or quirky hook in the last (bottom) slot rounds out an update nicely", so that's what I was looking for. The first hook met that, the other hook didn't. Both hooks were approved, so I picked the one that fit what I needed. -- RoySmith (talk) 18:00, 31 October 2022 (UTC)
- I guess my point is that, I feel the alt hook would have likely generated somewhat more interest and thus more traffic. It is the one I'd have independently suggested if a DYK wasn't raised before I had a chance (not that it's of any fault of Onegreatjoke, who was just making a proposal). I'd have hoped, given two editors expressed preference for an alt, that you may have reconsidered though. Bungle (talk • contribs) 18:30, 31 October 2022 (UTC)

Cadbury Family - Sockpuppet
Hello - I'm afraid I have no other means of contacting you.
Re Cadbury Family edits, this is an ongoing issue. The account MikeWoodall7553 & Williamdouglass7553 have been blocked by Wikipedia as they (both accounts are ran by the same female) are harassing Tobi-Jayne Cadbury, a descendant of the family. I have been re-instating her and her husbands details, as has Tk4y06 & IgDom. We request this investigation is closed as it isn't at all malicious.
Thank you. Markwhite2828 (talk) 14:13, 2 November 2022 (UTC)

Course of action regarding right wing bad faith editor - 3Kingdoms
Hi, i'm new to the world of participating on wikipedia so i'm sorry if this is not the right course of action. I request help in reporting the user 3Kingdoms. The user has been banned multiple times before for wrongful edits to the benefit of the users political rightwing bias. His behaviour has not approved and i suggest a permanent ban.
I haven't had a look at editing histories before on wikipedia. While searching for the book "The road to unfreedom" i entered the wikipedia article and found mentions of negative reviews that seemed somewhat suspect. I had to further google these on my own to uncover the narratives of the authors behind them. Afterwards i checked the wikipedia edit history and was greeted by edits removing text that mentions author bias (admittedly i have a hard time finding sources depicting Sophie Pinkham as "pro Russia" so that edit i am not concerned with). https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=The_Road_to_Unfreedom&diff=prev&oldid=1119118699
Checking the profile of 3Kingdoms revealed further attempts of edits displaying a right wing bias, this being the first: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Blue_Lives_Matter&diff=prev&oldid=1119319333 .
I cannot see, especially based on past actions, that this user is editing in good faith. This seems to me a clear attempt to make small changes to obstruct information that is hurtful to a politically right wing cause. I think these changes dangerous and analogous to attempted propaganda.
Link to edits causing a previous ban: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Black_genocide&type=revision&diff=1041036745&oldid=1038583390
I'm not "good enough" at wikipedia to know if i'm doing this the right way. I hope i can find help from you. 2001:4643:B658:0:20AE:ADFE:A473:2368 (talk) 14:59, 2 November 2022 (UTC)

Noticing your edits in Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Zhomron/Archive, I should mention that when the account was created, I suspected it was a sock for Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/BedrockPerson/Archive . Roy, thanks for your review of the Marmaduke Johnson DYK nomination, but when you edited out "colonial America" from the hook it made it very unclear. Johnson was the first printer in all of colonial America to operate a private press. Before Johnson there was only one press in all the colonies, located in Cambridge, and it was a state run press under the dictates of royal authority. The hook as it reads now doesn't make this clear and gives the impression that Johnson was merely the first printer to run his own press in Boston only, which is almost a boring statement. Franklin V, 1980, on page 303 specifically says "He established the first printing press in the colonies." Is it too late to re-include "colonial America" into the hook? I edited the article more clearly on that point and added the citation. -- Gwillhickers (talk) 18:55, 3 November 2022 (UTC)
- I thought if it was Boston in 1647, the colonial america part could be assumed, but no big deal. I've put it back. But I still got rid of "ever" :-) -- RoySmith (talk) 19:01, 3 November 2022 (UTC)
- That's fine. Once again, many thanks!! -- Gwillhickers (talk) 19:06, 3 November 2022 (UTC)

Sockpuppet
Hi Roy, sorry to bother you, I just wanted to tell you that your recent block of Special:Contributions/82.21.49.1, who admitted to being a sock puppet of User:Annamargarita0, has now expired, and is now making the same edits and is restoring edits made my socks, which makes me think that it’s Anna again. Please can you re-block them? Thanks. Blanchey (talk) 14:52, 5 November 2022 (UTC)
- @Blanchey Could you open an SPI report, please? -- RoySmith (talk) 14:56, 5 November 2022 (UTC)
Hi RoySmith,
I noticed you recently closed an SPI case by just protecting a few pages and not blocking IP addresses. Since the sockpuppet continues to edit Wikipedia, how is that helpful? The sock is now editing under a new IP (98.116.91.124 (talk · contribs · WHOIS)), which should be blocked as well as the others. The issue was not about specific articles that are being edited, but about allowing a known sock to continue freely editing. United States Man (talk) 17:18, 5 November 2022 (UTC)
- They're obviously hopping around from one IP to another, so I don't see how blocking any particular IP is going to help. That's why I tried attacking the problem from the other side, i.e. page protection. -- RoySmith (talk) 17:55, 5 November 2022 (UTC)
- Yeah but unless you semi-protect every page in WP:Weather that is ultimately ineffective. Thus, that will allow a sockpuppet to edit Wikipedia at will and make a mockery of the whole SPI process. Or, you could do the proper SPI checkuser and block each IP address each time a new case is opened at SPI. That will eventually put an end to this. United States Man (talk) 18:41, 5 November 2022 (UTC)
- I will take another look. I can't promise anything; dealing with IP editing is complicated for a bunch of reasons, both technical and policy. -- RoySmith (talk) 20:28, 5 November 2022 (UTC)
- 47.19.209.230 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) is another active one that has been block during a CU before. United States Man (talk) 20:40, 5 November 2022 (UTC)
- It’s pretty disgusting how I was perceived to have been a sock, there appears to have been only flimsy evidence supporting such a conclusion, and the only evidence seems to be a shared interest in weather on Long Island. Long Island has nearly 3 million people, Y’know. 71.125.36.50 (talk) 16:06, 6 November 2022 (UTC)
- This is the same attitude and behavior shown by previously blocked IP addresses, so the point is being made for me. The main problem with this user (in addition to being banned) is the use of numerous IP addresses to try to dominate discussions in order to build consensus toward their point of view. That is a big problem. The user also seems to stalk my contributions list so they can show up wherever I comment and provide commentary such as the comment above with different IPs. United States Man (talk) 22:12, 6 November 2022 (UTC)

burnout
Per Special:Diff/1120401235, my unasked-for advice: don't do more than you enjoy doing. Other people will step up if they think they need to. Burning out at DYK and then feeling guilty about not working there as regularly as I had been resulted in a 2-month unplanned absence from Wikipedia for me, and I am a nearly-without-fail daily editor. I came back and desysopped to see if it was adminning that was the issue, and a few days later someone asked for people to fill some preps, I didn't feel like it but said I'd come in the next day and do one. Didn't edit for three days. It wasn't adminning. It was feeling like there was a job not enough people were doing, feeling like I was letting the people who were doing it down by not doing it, feeling a bit resentful that so many people weren't helping more, etc. Now I move a prep to queue when I make a nom.
It's better to do less than to burn out. Valereee (talk) 20:13, 7 November 2022 (UTC)

- It is amazing that Blablubbs has already taken care of it. The sock was already is other kinds of trouble. Thank you and Blablubbs. Chaipau (talk) 23:11, 9 November 2022 (UTC)
Why on earth have you blocked my IP address?
I have done absolutely nothing wrong except be a) be a brand new user, who is still trying to learn the website and b) fix blatant obvious vandalism. The vandalism in question is linked here - it was on the Oldham page. User contributions for 2A02:C7E:5761:B900:2543:76F2:AC8C:9CAF - Wikipedia
I was sat downstairs, watching the Oldham game, using my phone to update the stats on the team page (as you'll see if you scroll through the edit history on Oldham). Then somebody put in a disruptive edit, so I specified my reason for reverting it.
Now you've decided to block a brand new user's IP address for trying to help the website, when I see widespread vandalism going on elsewhere??? PeachyBum07 (talk) 04:22, 10 November 2022 (UTC)

"Fourth of nine"
(from Template:Did you know nominations/Jack Smith (lawyer)) Template:Did you know nominations/Arellano Chiefs basketball is a nomination of nine articles, so if someone reviews it in full, they get nine QPQ credits. The nomination for Smith was the fourth time that nomination was invoked for a QPQ, out of nine total times it can be used. Your message
Hi, RoySmith. You mentioned me in this edit. I think I understand your point, but I am a bit surprised that anyone taking the hook forward would include any words that had been struck through! Moonraker (talk) 13:10, 18 November 2022 (UTC)
- There's a semi-automated process most people use to promote hooks. You tell it which hook you want, and it grabs it verbatim. It's not smart enough to know to leave off stuck-out words. -- RoySmith (talk) 13:55, 18 November 2022 (UTC)
- I enabled that feature for a little while, but the problem is that once it omits the struck parts from its consideration, it also edits the nompage to remove the strikethrough from there, too. Not a terribly difficult fix, I just haven't gotten around to that bulletproof, so it's disabled for now. theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (she/her) 04:04, 21 November 2022 (UTC)

The million rules of DYK
Hello Roy, regarding this edit, we try to always keep one prep clear so that we can shuffle things around if that's needed. Or at least, keep one lead hook and one non-lead hook clear in the last prep. What just happened is that I pulled a lead hook from a queue and needed to replace it with a lead hook from a prep. And in that prep, it's best to replace it with the code that displays to everyone that the picture and the lead hook is missing. But if there isn't an empty slot anywhere, I have to go scrambling around to find that code from somewhere. I suspect for PSHAW to work, the prep set needs to have that code. Long story short, always keep one lead hook and one non-lead hook clear in the last prep. Schwede66 23:13, 23 November 2022 (UTC)
- OK, thanks. I did not know that. -- RoySmith (talk) 23:41, 23 November 2022 (UTC)
Query
Hi Roy. Not sure if you saw my ping at Wikipedia talk:Arbitration Committee Elections December 2022/Candidates/Tamzin. If you're not going to post the chat log, would you object to my doing so? I don't think it's fair to the voters to have only your characterization of the discussion to go off of, so the alternative would be me quoting my end and paraphrasing your end. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she|they|xe) 21:15, 24 November 2022 (UTC)
DYK for Cranksgiving
On 25 November 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Cranksgiving, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Cranksgiving has been described as "part bike ride, part food drive, part scavenger hunt"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Cranksgiving. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Cranksgiving), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

- I think the bot does what it's supposed to do. My question is why we would redirect a talk to a user page which I think you did, which leads to it. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:24, 26 November 2022 (UTC)

Recent changes
- A new preference, “Enable limited width mode”, has been added to the Vector 2022 skin. The preference is also available as a toggle on every page if your monitor is 1600 pixels or wider. It allows for increasing the width of the page for logged-out and logged-in users. [14]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 29 November. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 30 November. It will be on all wikis from 1 December (calendar).
- Some wikis will be in read-only for a few minutes because of a switch of their main database. It will be performed on 29 November at 07:00 UTC (targeted wikis) and on 1 December at 07:00 UTC (targeted wikis).
- Mathematical formulas shown in SVG image format will no longer have PNG fall-backs for browsers that don't support them. This is part of work to modernise the generation system. Showing only PNG versions was the default option until in February 2018. [15][16][17]
- On some wikis that use flagged revisions, a new checkbox will be added to Special:Contributions that enables you to see only the pending changes by a user. [18]
Future changes
- How media is structured in the parser's HTML output will change early next week at group1 wikis (but not Wikimedia Commons or Meta-Wiki). This change improves the accessibility of content, and makes it easier to write related CSS. You may need to update your site-CSS, or userscripts and gadgets. There are details on what code to check, how to update the code, and where to report any related problems. [19]

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2022 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}}
to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:26, 29 November 2022 (UTC)
18 April 2022 Sockpuppet investigations on Diego Grez-Cañete
I was thoroughly disappointed by your decision to close down the Sockpuppet investigations on Diego Grez-Cañete in July. You wrote: "I see I declined this 3 months ago and nothing has happened since then. The archives also show a many-year pattern of reports that don't pan out.", you declined initially the CheckUser which is not the same as declining the investigation. In face of the large amount of evidence gathered in the investigation, I fail to see how "a many-year pattern of reports that don't pan out"? Can you exactly explain why they don't "pan out" to you? Sietecolores (talk) 22:49, 24 November 2022 (UTC)
- @Sietecolores Which SPI are we talking about? This is obviously somehow related to User:Diego Grez-Cañete, but that user has vanished and I can't find any SPI that looks like it might be the one you're concerned about. -- RoySmith (talk) 20:40, 25 November 2022 (UTC)
- This is the link Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Diego Grez-Cañete/Archive.
- I repeat the issue of concern:
- You wrote: "I see I declined this 3 months ago and nothing has happened since then. - That was back in April, so I don't remember any details from the time. But, looking at the case again, I see a lot of accounts that were reported and found not to be socks. The one account I see that was blocked (Beechosthegodmode1 was found to be a sock of somebody else. There's probably not a lot of value in trying to dig any further into the history, but if you know of any currently active accounts which you believe are socks, please open a new report. WP:GOODSPI has some suggestions on how to file an effective report. -- RoySmith (talk) 15:20, 27 November 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you for the advise. I will raise the issue again. Some will say the issue has already been addressed, but the rationale you provided is not clear at all on why things "don't pan out". The evidence gathered was quite large and the likelihood of a false positive was very low. Sietecolores (talk) 10:10, 30 November 2022 (UTC)
Administrators' newsletter – December 2022
News and updates for administrators from the past month (November 2022).
- Consensus has been found in an RfC to automatically place RfAs on hold after one week.
- The article creation at scale RfC has been closed.
- An RfC on the banners for the December 2022 fundraising campaign has been closed.
- A new preference named "Enable limited width mode" has been added to the Vector 2022 skin. The preference is also shown as a toggle on every page if your monitor is 1600 pixels or wider. When disabled it removes the whitespace added by Vector 2022 on the left and right of the page content. Disabling this preference has the same effect as enabling the wide-vector-2022 gadget. (T319449)
- Eligible users are invited to vote on candidates for the Arbitration Committee until 23:59 December 12, 2022 (UTC). Candidate statements can be seen here.
- The proposed decision for the 2021-22 review of the discretionary sanctions system is open.
- The arbitration case Reversal and reinstatement of Athaenara's block has been closed.
- The arbitration case Stephen has been opened and the proposed decision is expected 1 December 2022.
- A motion has modified the procedures for contacting an admin facing Level 2 desysop.
- Tech tip: A single IPv6 connection usually has access to a "subnet" of 18 quintillion IPs. Add
/64
to the end of an IP in Special:Contributions to see all of a subnet's edits, and consider blocking the whole subnet rather than an IP that may change within a minute.

Recent changes
- The Wikisources use a tool called ProofreadPage. ProofreadPage uses OpenSeadragon which is an open source tool. The OpenSeadragon JavaScript API has been significantly re-written to support dynamically loading images. The functionality provided by the older version of the API should still work but it is no longer supported. User scripts and gadgets should migrate over to the newer version of the API. The functionality provided by the newer version of the API is documented on MediaWiki. [20][21]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 6 December. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 7 December. It will be on all wikis from 8 December (calendar).

DYK for Kopka River
Hi RoySmith. Thanks for promoting my DYK for Kopka River. Since you approved both hooks ALT2a and ALT3, do you mind using ALT3 instead? If it is all the same to you, you can just swap it at Template:Did you know/Preparation area 5. No particular reason, just my preference, a bit more "hookey". Thanks. -- P 1 9 9 ✉ 17:32, 6 December 2022 (UTC)
- @P199 Thanks for your note. I agree with theleekycauldron on this one; we don't need to put somebody's unfortunate and accidental death on the front page. Let me suggest that you start a thread on WT:DYK with your request. If somebody wants to swap the hook, I won't object, but I'd rather not do it myself. -- RoySmith (talk) 17:53, 6 December 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for the explanation. It isn't a strong request and I totally understand the reservation. I won't pursue it further. Thanks anyway. -- P 1 9 9 ✉ 18:01, 6 December 2022 (UTC)
DYK for Arthur O. Austin
On 7 December 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Arthur O. Austin, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Arthur O. Austin built the most powerful outdoor high-voltage laboratory in the world? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Arthur O. Austin. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Arthur O. Austin), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
RoySmith, your review here was responded to, but unfortunately you weren't pinged at the time. Can you please return as soon as possible to continue the review? Many thanks! BlueMoonset (talk) 02:08, 9 December 2022 (UTC)
- Done, thanks for the reminder. -- RoySmith (talk) 02:15, 9 December 2022 (UTC)
Peace Dove
Peace is a state of balance and understanding in yourself and between others, where respect is gained by the acceptance of differences, tolerance persists, conflicts are resolved through dialog, peoples rights are respected and their voices are heard, and everyone is at their highest point of serenity without social tension.
