Hello!
editIt is always nice to spot a Czech editor here (so one doesn't feel completely alone :)
I see you worked a lot on several Czech writers (on Czech Wiki) and these are either not covered or poorly covered on en: - if you feel for it and find a time, please feel free to add/update some articles.
Because of small number of people dealing with Czech topics and because vandals have better places to play conflicts or wars are almost unheard in this corner. Pavel Vozenilek 06:24, 19 February 2006 (UTC)
- Hi Daniel! Thank you for correcting which-that mistake on Petr Zelenka page, it is great news that we have a Wikipedian with en-5 interested in Czech culture in the team :-) I am looking forward for your visits on other stubs I created, it will be like a free English grammar lesson for me :-)) Sucháč JanSuchy 19:50, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
- Ahoj Dane, welcome back from the Wikibreak. Yesterday, I transformed clumsy English text about Prague Conservatory from prgcons.cz into an even clumsier article. I would appreciate if you could translate it to English some day. The more you reformulate it the better ;-) S úctou JanSuchy 12:51, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
- Ahoj! Ok, I'll take a look at it as soon as possible. Have a nice day! Daniel Šebesta (talk • contribs) 13:13, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
Now it looks perfect, thanks. Try to avoid Josef Vejvoda article I added today :-)) Oops, we passed the 1.3 mio mark. The number of articles added in August might be again almost twice the size of cs-wiki. I surrended and after adding two articles, one category and several book cover images here I also added two articles to cs-wiki today. Eh, yesterday. JanSuchy 22:08, 6 August 2006 (UTC)
- No problem! I think when I read the article again later, I'll find some more things that could be improved. But I don't think I'll avoid the Josef Vejvoda article; I'll take a look at it soon. ;) Yea, the Czech Wikipedia grows slowly, that's true, but you should consider how many more users and contributors the English version has... Good night for now! Daniel Šebesta (talk • contribs) 22:43, 6 August 2006 (UTC)
Ahoj Dane, thanks for proofreading Jiří Gruša. I translated the text from Czech sources, I am glad there were not as many mistakes as I expected. Could you please have a look at Jan Potměšil page some day? I am afraid people redirected from Notable users section on wheelchair page, might be confused by my dialect :-))) "Worldwide view needed" template was hanging there, so I added him and Schäuble. Second wish - how would you translate the following titles to English: Území bílých králů/Das Geheimnis der weißen Hirsche (I'm sure whether Territory or Mystery would be better for the English title and where to put the), Hovory o štěstí mezi čtyřma očima, Příběhy obyčejného šílenství (I have seen Tales of Common Insanity on divadlo.cz website) and Povídejme si, děti. Many thanks, Sushi JanSuchy 20:11, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
- Ahoj Sushi! :) I'll take a look at Jan Potměšil as soon as possible.
- As for the titles:
- Your translation Territory of the White Kings sounds fine. However, I might prefer The Territory of White Kings (the articles used the other way around). The only online source I could find uses a translation of the German title, The Territory of White Deer [1]. I don't know how widely the series is known under a specific name abroad, so it's difficult for me to decide which title should be used as the main one.
- For Hovory o štěstí mezi čtyřma očima, I might write Face-to-face Talks about Happiness, but I'm not sure whether I'd be able to attract any audience by that title. :)
- For Příběhy obyčejného šílenství, IMDb gives Wrong Side Up [2] as the international title.
- For Povídejme si, děti, I'd simply say Let's Talk, Children, or less formally Let's Talk, Kids.
- Daniel Šebesta (talk • contribs) 12:27, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
- Hi Dan, thanks for your reply. In the past, I did not care about the titles so much. However, I have just read Kundera's lamentation regarding French translation of Kafka in Testaments Betrayed so I decided to ask some expert :-))
- I realized White King is some detergent, so I am going to use The Territory of White Deer.
- Regarding the clumsy title of Hovory - I e-mailed the author. Maybe I'll just use Talks about Happiness
- Příběhy: I would like to make an article about the original play, not about the film (actually I haven't seen it). I'll start with Tales of Common Insanity and later move the page if necessary. Or The Tales...?
- O.K. Let's Talk, Children is my favourite book. I especially like the part about a grubby boy with potatoes growing in his ears :-)
- One more wish: Kdyby prase mělo křídla - If the Pig Could Fly or If the Pig Had Wings? Thx. JanSuchy 20:36, 26 August 2006 (UTC) p.s. have you seen my new Babel? :-)
- Hi Dan, thanks for your reply. In the past, I did not care about the titles so much. However, I have just read Kundera's lamentation regarding French translation of Kafka in Testaments Betrayed so I decided to ask some expert :-))
- Hi Sushi! I'd prefer The Tales of Common Insanity (with the article). As for the pig, both of them sound equally fine to me; it's only up to you which one you like better. Have a good evening! Daniel Šebesta (talk • contribs) 20:44, 26 August 2006 (UTC)
- Btw, I like your new Babel! It's funny in many places! But I think I'm going to keep my current Babels. :) Daniel Šebesta (talk • contribs) 20:50, 26 August 2006 (UTC)
Diacritics for sorting keys of categories
editIt is better NOT to use diacritics for sorting key of categories. It sometimes results in quite funny arrangement of items, very unexpected for both Czech and English reader. Pavel Vozenilek 22:28, 20 February 2006 (UTC)
- OK, thanks for the advice. Apart from that, to respond to your previous posting, I'm glad I'm not the only Czech person on the English Wikipedia. :-) I'll make every effort to add or expand some articles on Czech topics, mainly on literature or language. By the way, are the sorting keys of any use? Wouldn't it actually work even without them? (Not sure, just asking...) --Sebesta 22:50, 20 February 2006 (UTC)
- Je nás tady pět a půl.
- By default name of article is used as sorting key, including possible diacritics. When the name doesn't have diacritics I do not specify the key explicitly. Pavel Vozenilek 22:51, 20 February 2006 (UTC)
- I've added redirects for the names w/o diacriticsm, like Petr Bezruc. It is for people not able to use proper diacritics. Thanks for these names. Pavel Vozenilek 00:06, 24 February 2006 (UTC)
- Thank you for adding that. I should have thought of it myself... Next time, I won't forget. However, they are just stubs now. Hope to have some more time to expand the articles. --Sebesta 14:14, 24 February 2006 (UTC)
Just FYI
edit[3]: the text was added by heavy promoter of this compuser (possibly Peros himself). It is always useful to check history to estimate whether the contribtion is valid or mere spam. Pavel Vozenilek 19:34, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
- Oh, thanks for the information. I have to admit that I didn't really read the whole text of the contribution. I just corrected the "typos." --Sebesta 20:21, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
Page moves
editHi Sebesta. If you move a page, e.g. for capitalisation, it's best to use the move function rather than do a cut and paste move, a) so the original author can always be traced b) so it leaves a redirect behind at the original page. --Sam Blanning (formerly Malthusian) (talk) 12:01, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
- Hi Samuel! Yes, I know about the move function. And I also used it. I didn't copy and pase the text. But with the article Famous People Connected with Prague it somehow didn't work properly. But I still suggest deleting the wrong spelling. --Sebesta 12:39, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
Misspellings are quite frequently redirected to the right one. Usually the logic is "well if someone made this mistake, someone else might". --Sam Blanning (formerly Malthusian) (talk) 13:18, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, I agree with you about that. But if it's only capitalization? If I search for "jan frantisek beckovsky" (uncapitalized), I am automatically redirected to the article Jan František Beckovský. That's why I suggested a deletion. --Sebesta 13:22, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
I think whether a misspelling or miscapitalisation is redirected or not purely depends on whether anyone's made the effort. Certainly I don't see any reason to delete a redirect once it's there. --Sam Blanning (formerly Malthusian) (talk) 13:27, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
- Ok. I still do consider this redirect redundant and useless, but it's certainly not a big problem. We can let it be there. --Sebesta 13:32, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
Signature
editHi Sebesta, the way to modify how your signature looks when you hit the signature button or when you type ~~~~ is to click on "my preferences" and then modify what it says in the box labeled "Nickname". Be sure to click the box saying "Raw signature" too. Hit Save and you're done. If you want to make sure it works right, you can try it out at the Wikipedia:Sandbox, or create your own sandbox at User:Sebesta/Sandbox. Angr (talk • contribs) 05:30, 8 April 2006 (UTC)
- Hi Angr! Thanks for the advice. I've successfully modified it now. The new signature isn't very original though. :) I'll probably change it some time later again. Thanks again! Sebesta (talk • contribs) 07:06, 8 April 2006 (UTC)
Dashes on the anniversary pages
editIn my current setup, there is no visible difference for me between your and my version of Portal:Germany/Anniversaries/April/April 11. Since this question is relevant for the other ~80 other such pages (see Portal:Germany/Anniversaries for a list of those I have created already), could you explain what you are doing and why and whether I should do that for the other anniversary pages? Thank you, Kusma (討論) 18:13, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
- What I did was changing hyphens into (en) dashes. The difference is explained e.g. here. It might seem to be a minor difference, but to be typographically correct, (en) dashes (–) should be used in that case, not hyphens (-). It would be nice to have this corrected on the other relevant pages. Btw, you surely have the en dash sign in the character map below your edit window. Daniel Šebesta (talk • contribs) 18:20, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
- While you are probably technically correct, this is a rather minor point. I won't fix this on the pages that exist already (but I won't stop anybody who has a bot to do this). I'll try to remember on new pages (although I hate to use characters that I can't type). So "–" is the correct one? As it looks exactly the same as "-" and the insert box doesn't say anything about it, it's hard to tell. Kusma (討論) 19:08, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, "–" is the correct one. It's twice as long as "-", but still they look very similar, and most people are not able (or willing) to distinguish them, not even many professionals in publishing houses. Hence it's a very frequent "mistake." I consider it a real mistake myself (I've been a proofreader for quite a long time, that might me the reason), so I correct it wherever I can (if I have the time, of course). I'm also glad when I can "teach" others how to use these correctly. So if you remember and have time to insert it from the box, it will be perfect. :) Daniel Šebesta (talk • contribs) 19:32, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
- Okay, with my other browser I see a difference. I'm not quite certain yet what looks best. One advantage of hyphens over dashes is that hyphens are used on the day pages like May 11 that I copy a lot of info from (if you want to get those changed, try at the Wikipedia:WikiProject Days of the year) and so I have to change less things when creating one of the annoversary pages for the Germany portal. German writers listed as Czech writers
editThough I may be mistaken, I was under the impression Norbert Fried wrote exclusively in German. Antidote
- No, no. He was born in South Bohemia and died in Prague. He traveled quite a lot, worked at the embassy in Mexico, etc., that's true, but he was Czech and wrote his works in Czech. Btw, his name is spelled Norbert Frýd, not Fried. Daniel Šebesta (talk • contribs) 21:54, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
I assumed Fryd was only the Czechified spelling. Anyway, I noticed you reverted my change on list of Czech writers to the list from the German wikipedia. I went ahead and put the German list on the talk page. I figure that the only way to get most of those articles made is to go full-speed ahead and bring all the red-links into a list (for now). After most of the articles have been made (however long that takes), I suggest the list be deleted as the category is pretty much sufficient. Anyway, I'm currently working on Czech composers, but as soon as I feel tired-out in that section, I'll come here and start making author articles. It's hard to do it alone though, so hopefully you'll be in the mood for some article-making too. I see your name is Daniel - is that common in Czechia now? I guess they got tired of using "Jan", "Josef", and "Vaclav" :P Antidote
- Yes, I reverted the German list, which is now pretty good I think, but not useable on the English Wikipedia. Anyway, I've been working on creating Czech writer stubs for some time now. See my user page (Created articles) about that. But I would certainly welcome your help, if you're interested in the topic. You could use "my" articles as a template, so that we can keep one style of the stubs. However, I disagree that the list should be deleted afterwords. It can be useful. There're also quite a lot of featured lists on Wikipedia. IMHO a list of writers can hardly be promoted to the featured level, but it can still be well done.
- Daniel is a common Czech name. It's been among the 10 most frequent names given to newly born (male) children for some time. The name is not entirely new in Czech, though. Compare Daniel Adam z Veleslavína (1546 – 1599). Daniel Šebesta (talk • contribs) 08:07, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

editHello Daniel. Thank you for your notice. I am from the Czech Republic, but I don't contribute to Czech Wikipedia. However you can leave me a message at any time if you want. Veselé Velikonoce! -- Darwinek 08:25, 14 April 2006 (UTC)
Ahoj. Přeji hodně zdaru a taktéž pěkné Velikonoce. Blahma 14:16, 14 April 2006 (UTC)
Howto get more users to discuss
editIs there any way to get more user to discuss something? I deleted some information on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expulsion_of_Germans_after_World_War_II as I found that the information it contained was not only unsourced, but also not verifiable by googling the terms. However, one user reverted my edit and claimed that I am pushing my POV. I feel that I should somehow attract more (and preferably not only czech) users to participate in the discussion. Is there any way to do that? Thx ackoz 18:31, 14 April 2006 (UTC)
- I could recommend for example the talk page of the German-speaking Wikipedians' notice board. There might be some users interested in the topic. You could ask them to join the corresponding discussion. Daniel Šebesta (talk • contribs) 18:37, 14 April 2006 (UTC)
Regarding your request about the table, well, there -is- one - at Berlin state election, 2001 (note the additional comma!) already. It seems the original creator of the article sans comma didn't bother to check the Elections in Germany list first. I've made the article a redirect to the original article, since it contained no additional information that wasn't in the other article already. --Doco 18:22, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
Prokop Sedivy
editHi Antidote! I've just edited the article about Prokop Šedivý that you recently created. Could you please give a source saying that he wrote The Czech Amazons (1792)? I have consulted several Czech sources but haven't found this work in any of them. Anyway, he wasn't that famous. I've never heard about him at school and many lexicons of Czech literature don't mention him either. Daniel Šebesta (talk • contribs) 10:19, 17 April 2006 (UTC)
- Greetings Sebesta. The only English source I could find stating his authorship of The Czech Amazons is here: [4]. Anyway, if you feel he is unimportant, I suppose you can change the article around. I only made the article because I was familiar with one of his works. Antidote 19:47, 17 April 2006 (UTC)
Hi! Thanks for the source. I wouldn't say he was unimportant. I guess Czechs were particularly proud of his plays during the National Revival era, when there were very few plays and books in Czech. But from today's point of view, his position is the Czech literature is much lower. That's why I changed your sentence in the article into "a significant playwright (...) of the National Revival era," which is undoubtedly true. Anyway, thanks for the new article! If you don't mind, I'll try to keep up with you and occassionally add and/or correct some information in articles about Czech people, esp. writers. Have a nice evening. wikics
editThank you for informing me about your template wikics. I would like to use it on my user page, but I cannot find the way, how to put it under my Babel chart. I do not want to replace the Babel chart with some Userbox, just to put it underneath. Is it possible? Thanks. Jan.Kamenicek 16:39, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for help. Meanwhile I got the idea to look at the Template:Babel-1, to see how they do it that it always stays on right, and it also worked. But your way looks better and I'll keep it. Thanks once more. Jan.Kamenicek 17:02, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
Please do not revert other users' edits
editYou have reverted an edit at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style to correct the spelling of "meter." Please do not revert other users' edits in the future. Maior1 17:43, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
- Hi! I regret to have to inform you that I will revert your and others' edits as long as they are useless and considering the British/American spelling. British spelling is accepted on the English-language Wikipedia. I myself prefer American spelling, but I cannot make others use it and I am not expected to change all spellings to the American version. Therefore, please do not make edits changing from British to American spelling or vice versa. They are most likely to be reverted by me or other editors. Thank you. Daniel Šebesta (talk • contribs) 18:24, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
Then why do you have any greater right to revert it from American to British? That is very hypocritical. Should have just left it as the American standard. Maior1 00:58, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
- I reverted it to keep the original spelling that you had had no right to change, and I'm going to make this revert again if you change the spelling variant somewhere. Daniel Šebesta (talk • contribs) 04:55, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

Enquiry
editHi Sebesta, is it fair to give publishing details of self written works atthe userpage? Does not it become commercial? Titles are alright. But publishers names, is that essential to put? User:Rimibchatterjee is doing so. Chandronandan 09:35, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
- Hi! I consider it absolutely okay, mainly for two reasons.
- It is important to know what publisher published the books, whether it was e.g. OUP or an only locally significant publishing house.
- Stating the name of the publisher gives the information more credibility. You can easily go and find the books online. (Giving the ISBN would be even more appropriate.)
- Furthermore, his user page doesn't give a positive review of the books, nor promotes them in any way; it's only a list. Thus, I can't see any commercial usage. On the contrary, it's interesting and relevant information about the user, because you can find out more about his fields of expertise. Daniel Šebesta (talk • contribs) 09:45, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
"RVV"
editYou might want to be a bit more careful in using that in edit summaries. According to Wikipedia:Vandalism vandalism is: any addition, deletion, or change to content, made in a deliberate attempt to compromise the integrity of the encyclopedia. You used "RVV" as an edit summary for the following edit summary where an IP changed "centers" to "centres". [5] Centre is just the British way of spelling center so I don't think that the IP was engaging in actual vandalism. Just be a bit more careful in using that in an edit summary for future purposes, thank you and happy editting.--Jersey Devil 22:00, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
- Hi! I used "rvv" intentionally, because in my opinion needless changing of spelling to promote British or American variants is vandalism; I consider it a change to content made in a deliberate attempt to compromise the integrity of the encyclopedia, to use the same words. It's by no means a useful edit. Daniel Šebesta (talk • contribs) 22:11, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
